This is the first on the list of no essay scholarships in Canada. In 2021, The Sallie Mae Foundation launched scholarship programs to further promote diversity in higher education for under-resourced and underrepresented students and those from historically underserved communities. Working in partnership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund, they are awarding $3 million in scholarships over the next three years to help students achieve their dream of post-secondary education.

2.       Be Bold Scholarship

Bold.org, who is the creator of this scholarship, believes that the world will be shaped by the bold—the fighters, the risk-takers, the earnest overachievers who won’t take no for an answer—the ones who know that a mountain has climbed a step at a time. The Be Bold No Essay Scholarship has no concern for your academic achievements but focuses on students with “boldest profile. Their “boldest profile,” has nothing to do with how good you are or whether you’re well accomplished but rather on three qualities that are;  Earnestness,  Determination, and Making a move. The $25,000 “Be Bold” Scholarship is a no-essay scholarship that will be awarded to the applicant with the boldest profile. Students at any education level, state, field of study, and GPA will be considered.

3.       Niche Scholarship

This scholarship gives you the privilege of winning an award without the burden of writing a lengthy essay. The scholarship is provided by Niche, a company that provides rankings, report cards, and reviews of colleges in the US. The scholarship is available for both high school and college students, as well as any student looking to attend college or graduate school in the next year. 7.       CIBC Youth Accelerator Scholarship

Valued at $50,000, The CIBC Youth Accelerator scholarship opportunity is currently open to Black youth in Grade 10 or 11 who are involved with a BGC Club. 9.       Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Award

The Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Awards program was established by members of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA) to provide monetary assistance to deserving students who wish to further their education in the automotive field. It is on the list of no essay scholarships in Canada. The Scholarship Awards were designed to:

• Promote professionalism within the automotive aftermarket,
• Create awareness of the aftermarket industry and attract new people to the industry
• Advance the state of knowledge within the industry.

12.   TD Scholarships for Community Leadership

Since 1995, TD has awarded millions in TD Scholarships for Community Leadership to recognize students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community leadership. TD Scholarships for Community Leadership recipients receive up to $70,000 for tuition and living expenses as well as opportunities for paid summer employment, peer networking, and mentorship. Applicants must be in their final year of high school, have an average of 75% or above, and have demonstrated community leadership.

13.   ATCO Indigenous Education Awards Program

The ATCO Indigenous Education Awards Program is another no essay scholarship. There are four different awards available:

• Merit Awards ($750) – for students completing Grades 9 – 12
• Bursaries ($1200) – for students enrolled in trade/community technical college diploma or certificate program
• Scholarship ($1800) – for students enrolled in degree or graduate programs
• Bridging Awards ($1000) – for  students registered in an upgrading program (Adult Basic Education) or University Preparation program

There is a maximum of one award per applicant per student year. Students may re-apply each year if they wish to be considered for another award. You can apply for one of our Indigenous Education Awards if you:

• Are a Canadian Indigenous person;
• Are enrolled full-time in junior/senior high school (including upgrading) or an accredited post-secondary institution or training/certificate program;
•  Are not a child of an ATCO employee.

14.   Terry Fox Humanitarian Scholarship

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award provides university scholarships to students who exemplify the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox by volunteering and giving back to their communities. This award recognizes the legacy of Terry Fox by awarding scholarships worth almost $30,000 to students who exemplify the selflessness and courage of its namesake. The application process requires applicants to submit an online application. Afterward, the scholarship committee will review each application and make a shortlist. Shortlisted applicants are invited to a panel interview with former Terry Fox scholars after which the committee makes final decisions. To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, in good academic standing at a Canadian secondary school. Students must be involved in voluntary humanitarian activities.

15.   Canadian Wildlife Federation Scholarships

Provided by the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), the Orville Erickson Memorial Scholarships are awarded once per year to post-secondary students in the field of conservation. The scholarship is financed entirely by private-sector donations in memory of Orville Erickson, a prominent Canadian conservationist and past CWF president. The scholarship amount varies every year and for each applicant, but the award ranges between $500 to $4,000. The deadline for applications is May 25 of each year. Tips for students applying to no essay scholarships

Look for competitions rather than randomized drawings.

No essay scholarships are alluring because they do away with the pressure that comes with writing an essay for your application. Between your other academic responsibilities, extracurriculars, and other commitments, these essays can present a big roadblock for applicants.

However, you should bear in mind that you are not the only student with this idea. Many applicants are attracted to opportunities that are easy to apply to, and since many no essay scholarships are essentially scholarship sweepstakes, that means you have a very low chance of actually winning.

This is not to say that you should not apply to these opportunities, but that you should seek out scholarship opportunities that assess some materials submitted by applicants. Whether this is a video submission, a portfolio, or a photograph you took, it can help your chances greatly.

Be wary of scholarship scams

No essay scholarships are very popular with students because they typically don’t take much time to apply to. Unfortunately, this makes them all the more popular with scammers. 

Before applying to any scholarship, and especially no essay scholarships, ensure that you are not giving away any personal information that could be used to steal your identity. SGI Canada specifies that students must also have received a minimum 70% GPA in their last year of study.

9. Gil Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship for Indigenous Peoples

In order for you to be eligible for this scholarship, you need to be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Journalism and identify as Indigenous.

1. bemo diversity advocacy scholarship.

The BeMo Diversity Advocacy scholarship aims to get students thinking about how they can advocate for more diversity within their school, community or society at large. The scholarship is intended primarily for pre-med and pre-residency students who want to get the best preparation possible to help them get into their preferred medical school or residency program.

Eligibility Requirements  

This scholarship is for pre-med students and pre-residency graduates only. Students and graduates who are longer than 12 months away from applying to their program are not eligible. All applicants must be within the 12-month period of applying to their preferred school or program to be eligible for this prize.

Prize/Award Amount

This scholarship awards the winning applicant $10,000 worth of BeMo consulting services for pre-med students or pre-residency graduates.

Offered by: McMaster University

This bursary is aimed at engineering students entering their second, third or final year of studies at McMaster University, in the School of Engineering. Students do not need to apply, but must demonstrate excellence in various areas, including academics, extracurriculars for college and GPA. Students must be enrolled in any of the following bachelor degree programs offered by the School of Engineering:

• Computer Science
• Engineering
• Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences

Eligibility Requirements

The Liburdi grant is an entrance scholarship so all students who meet general scholarship requirements are eligible. If a student meets the general requirements, they are eligible for any of the entrance scholarships offered by the School of Engineering, not only the Liburdi award. The Liburdi or any engineering entrance scholarship is awarded to students who:

• Attain and maintain a grade average of 90% or higher
• Demonstrate leadership qualities
• Participate in extracurricular activities
• Submit college recommendation letters

If admitted students meet the eligibility requirements, they will be awarded a total prize of $40,000 or $10,000 per each year of the four-year degree. 

Offered by: University of Northern British Columbia

This memorial award is offered only to female varsity basketball players enrolled full-time within any area of study at the University of Northern British Columbia. The scholarship is awarded to any player nominated by the coach of the team, so players cannot nominate themselves.

Aside from being on women’s varsity basketball team and being enrolled full-time at UNBC, the award stipulates that eligible recipients achieve and maintain a GPA of 2.67 to be eligible for the prize.

The bursary awards a single prize of $500 to the eligible winner.

4. Genevieve Mallon Hazelton Bursary in Arts & Social Sciences

Offered by: Carleton University

This memorial prize was bequeathed by the late Barclay Taylor Hazelton, in honor of his first wife, to Carleton University, which is one of the many universities in Ontario that offer free scholarships in Canada. This prize is aimed specifically at undergraduate students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at the university and either entering their first or second year.

Aside from the requirement that recipients are enrolled in any Bachelor of Arts program at Carleton, they must also meet other requirements to be eligible, which include:

• Being a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person in Canada
• Demonstrate financial need
• Be legal residents of Ontario according to OSAP requirements

There is no specific application for the award, but students must complete the general undergraduate bursary application form online for all bursaries offered by the school.

The prize amount is unknown.

5. Alexander David McKenzie Scholarship

Offered by: York University Osgoode Hall Law School

This scholarship is aimed at graduates from the York University Osgoode Hall Law School in honor of one of its original graduates, Alexander David McKenzie. The award is given only to graduates of the JD program; the other degree programs offered at Osgoode are not eligible. Graduates must meet certain eligibility requirements but do not need to apply for the scholarship separately.

Graduates who meet the following requirements will be considered by the scholarship committee for the prize:

• Graduate within the top ten percent of the class (A- or greater)
• Be active within the sphere of Ontario politics

The school does not have any other requirements and any graduate of the school, regardless of residency or citizenship status will be considered.

Graduates who meet the eligibility requirements will be awarded a single $5000 prize.

Offered by: McGill University

This award is named for McGill University alumnus Henrietta Kostman, who bequeathed the funds to create this scholarship in honor of her late husband Harry. The prize is awarded to any undergraduate student in good academic standing who is enrolled full-time in a Faculty of Arts program at McGill University.

The only two requirements that undergraduates need to be considered are:

• Being enrolled full-time a Faculty of Arts program
• Achieve and maintain good academic standing

Maintaining good academic standing is important as the prize is renewable. Students who maintain a satisfactory academic grade during their studies are eligible to have the award renewed for every successive year. However, students from either Nova Scotia or British Columbia will be given preference.

The scholarship pays out an award of $5000 each year to a single qualifying student.

7. Mandell Pinder LLP Indigenous Law Scholar Award

Offered by: University of Victoria, Faculty of Law

This award is given to any undergraduate or graduate First Nations member who is either entering or continuing their studies in the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria. Eligible candidates must demonstrate excellence in several areas (from volunteering to community service and academics to graduate work), but also exemplify qualities such as resilience, determination, and compassion.

Students do not need to apply for this scholarship, but they will be chosen based on the factors listed above but also things such as:

• Academic excellence
• Community service
• Overcoming obstacles or barriers
• Financial need

Mandell Pinder LLP, the private consulting firm which sponsors the prize, awards deserving students (the number of scholarships available changes every year) $5000.

8. Stetson Scholarship in Engineering

Offered by: University of Alberta

The Stetson Scholarship in Agriculture and Engineering are aimed at incoming undergraduate students into the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. The scholarship is awarded to incoming students who demonstrate financial need. Applicants' residency is also another consideration as one of the eligibility requirements states that applicants must have Alberta residency.

The only requirements for this no application scholarship are that potential winners must:

• Be continuing studies at the Faculty of Engineering
• Entering their third or fourth year
• Must have lived in Alberta for at least five years

9. A L Cochrane Scholarship

This scholarship is open to incoming students at the University of Toronto, St. George campus, enrolled in any type of program (bachelor’s, diploma, certificate, associate, etc.). It awards up to $5000 for each year of their four-year program for students who self-identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or People of Color).

This is an entrance scholarship for students admitted to Victoria College at the U of T, St. George Campus who identify as Black, Indigenous or Person of Color. There are few other eligibility requirements other than students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must also maintain good academic standing to be eligible, while students from Northern Ontario will be shown preference.

The award pays out $5000 annually over four years.

This grant was endowed by John D. and Dominic J. Rosart of Burlington in recognition of incoming high school students who have achieved the highest academic average from their high school graduating class and demonstrate financial need, as defined by the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Eligible students must be entering either the Faculty of Health Sciences or the School of Earth, Environment and Society.

There is no separate application needed for this bursary award. Eligible students will be chosen based on their academic standing, their preferred choice of program and whether they demonstrate financial need. But, as the prize is renewable, winning students must maintain an average of 9.5 for their Fall/Winter classes.

The grant awards prizes of up to $5000 for individual students, which may be renewed for up to four years.

11. George A. Gray O.A.C. '51 Varsity Scholarships

Offered by: University of Guelph

This scholarship is named in honor of George A. Gray, an offensive lineman who played at the University of Guelph and is aimed at varsity athletes who are also enrolled full-time at the university. While this scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need, applicants must demonstrate other qualities to be eligible for this scholarship.

Eligible scholars must submit a Financial Need Assessment Form with the university and indicate they want to be considered for the scholarship. Along with the form, applicants must submit letters and documentation outlining their leadership and volunteer activities. While any student athlete can apply, preference will be given to students who play football. Students must also have an academic average of 70% or higher.

The scholarship awards two prizes of $4500 each to two students every year. Past winners of the scholarship remain eligible to apply and receive the award in subsequent years.

12. William & Nona Heaslip Scholarship

This scholarship is aimed at incoming high school students who have achieved a final academic average of 70% or higher, which they must maintain throughout the duration of their studies, if they are awarded the scholarship. Students do not have to apply directly to the scholarship program, as it is an internal scholarship, but they must submit a Financial Need Assessment Form to be considered.

Aside from the two stated requirements, eligible applicants for this program must also:

• Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
• Have completed between 4 and 6 credits of any program
• Have a 70% average or higher

The scholarship awards two winning students a renewable prize of $15,000 each.

13. Ellen and Petrus Berg Family Bar None Award

The Bar None Endowment Fund is a scholarship fund started by graduates of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, to help future students enrolled in these programs pay for university. The Ellen and Petrus Berg Family awards students enrolled in any ALES program including the following programs:

• Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
• Bachelor of Science in Agricultural/Food Business Management
• Bachelor of Science in Animal Health
• Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Sciences

Students must be enrolled full-time in any of the above-mentioned degree programs, but also meet a few other eligibility requirements, such as:

• Achieving a 3.0 GPA for a total of 24 credits for one semester
• Have resided in Alberta for the last five years
• Participate or be involved in some volunteer or community service organization

The award gives out prizes in the amount of $4,750 every year to eligible students. Students who have already won a Bar None scholarship must wait until the next year to apply again for the scholarship.

Offered by: Nipissing University

This particular award is offered by Nipissing University, which is one of the universities in Ontario that is located in Northern Ontario, such as the Northern Ontario School of Medicine . The award is given to students enrolled in the undergraduate business administration program and helps pay for their education if they demonstrate financial need but other qualities as well.

The only eligibility requirements for this award are that students must be:

• Enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Business Administration program
• Distinguished academic record

Applicants must either also be entering or continuing their studies in the Business Administration program.

This scholarship awards a single $4,675 prize to a winning student.

15. Aron Avraham Tanny Scholarship in Cinema Studies

Offered by: University of Toronto

This scholarship is awarded to returning students (3 rd or 4 th year) enrolled in the Cinema Studies program at U of T and is based on financial need and academic excellence within the Cinema Studies program. Students do not have to apply for this scholarship, but must meet certain eligibility requirements to be awarded the single prize.

Aside from being enrolled full-time in the Cinema Studies program at U of T, eligible applicants must:

• Reside in Ontario

If students in Ontario are currently receiving financial aid via the Ontario Student Assistance Program, this fulfills all three of the requirements, as applying for OSAP is a regular part of how to get into university in Ontario.

The A ron Avraham Tanny Scholarship in Cinema Studies awards winning students a single prize of between $3,500 - $4,500 depending on the availability of funds.

16. Equine Foundation of Canada/George F. Wade Memorial Scholarship

Offered by: University of Prince Edward Island

This prize is automatically given to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students enrolled full-time at the University of Prince Edward Island who are specializing in equine studies. There is no application for this scholarship and students who demonstrate financial need as well as have distinguished themselves academically will be considered.

The $3500 scholarship is awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Winners will be determined by both the Equine Foundation of Canada and the University of Prince Edward Island scholarship committee. Students do not have to submit any additional information or supporting documentation to apply for the program.

The prize amount is a single scholarship totaling $3500.

Free scholarships in Canada are any scholarships that do not require separate applications, essays and other documents for applicants to be considered. Free scholarships in Canada are also given to those who demonstrate financial need and do not have the resources to hire Canadian university admissions consultants .

• Be an underclassman or graduating high school senior.

• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

To apply for the award, students must submit two letters of recommendation, one official transcript from their respective institution, and one copy of their FAFSA Student Aid Report before the annual March 1 deadline.

College grants are awesome for avoiding student loan debt, but all the paperwork involved? That gets exhausting. Student life is busy—sometimes you just want to apply with a short form and be on your way, no fuss.

So in this post, I’m sharing over 100 no-essay college scholarship opportunities available this year, from student contests that ANYONE can win to awards for specific degree paths, including grants for college-bound high school students and graduate-level studies.

No, all scholarships do not require essays. Writing a paper is easily the most time-consuming part of applying for scholarships. Thankfully, there are college scholarships with no essay required.

Some will have you submit a short video in lieu of a writing piece. Others will have you submit your info for a chance to win, with the winners being selected at random.

The second type of scholarships are also referred to as scholarship sweepstakes and lottery scholarships. These applications are short and sweet, which is why they’re a favorite among students.

Are No Essay Scholarships Legit?

YES, no essay scholarships are legit and a real way to get free money for college tuition. They basically work like sweepstakes/raffle. Winners are chosen at random, commonly on an annual or quarterly basis.

While there are many trustworthy sources who have no essay scholarship contests:

All that glitters is not gold.

Use your best judgment before sharing your personal information. Be aware of scholarship scams because unfortunately, they exist too. Some offers are just a trick to collect emails so they can spam you.

How to Spot Scholarships Scams?

How can you tell when a non essay scholarship is really just a ploy for information?

Often times, certain things about the application will seem off. Knowing the warning signs can make it easier to differentiate a scam from a legitimate scholarship.

Here are some things to look out for:

1. Do not pay to pass go.

If a scholarship requires you to pay a fee, just close the tab and move on.  Never pay to apply for a scholarship or any type of student aid.

2. The cake is a LIE.

I can GUARANTEE that if a scholarship claims to be “guaranteed”, it’s a scam. Guaranteed college scholarships are always fake.  Don’t trust anyone who makes such assurances. Big promises = big disappointments.

Warning signs like that mean you should walk away from an application. Because it’s definitely not worth the trouble or the ensuing headache.

Just remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And when in doubt, Google it out!

Final thoughts on scholarships with no essay

When it comes to no essay college scholarships…it’s important to keep your expectations in check. These may be the easiest scholarships to apply for, but they aren’t the easiest scholarships to get.

The lower the bar of entry for a scholarship, the more applicants it gets. Or in other words – the easier the application, the more attractive it is. And scholarships with no essay have a POWERFUL allure. As a result, there’s a lot of competition for the award money.

But on the other hand…while your chances of winning are slim, they’re not quite nonexistent. Most winners are selected by completely random drawings.

So, in the infamous words of lottery players everywhere—you can’t win if you don’t play! Someone’s gotta win and it just might be you.

With the rising cost of higher education, it’s important to secure as much financial aid for school as possible. You may not realize it, but you probably already qualify for dozens of scholarships.  You may be a competitor for awards because of your strong GPA, academic area of interest, hobbies, or even because you graduated high school in a particular county.

While there are many scholarships that require you to submit a long list of supporting documentation, not all applications are so taxing. The list below offers information on 20 scholarships that do not require you to write a personal essay or statement of academic goals. 

These no essay scholarships save you time and energy and could result in you garnering hundreds or thousands of dollars in free money for school.

Tips When Applying To These Scholarships

Here are a couple of things to consider while compiling your no essay scholarship applications. Bear in mind that even no essay scholarships will require you to submit at least a few important documents. Be sure that you meet all of the submission requirements for each scholarship, as each one will ask for specific information. If you don’t submit all of the required documents, they may toss out your application. 

Secondly, in addition to searching for scholarship opportunities at the local level and students in your county, state, or region, do not overlook scholarships that offer smaller awards. No matter the size of the scholarship, all of the money you receive means taking on less debt through loans or paying out of pocket.

1. Richard J. Seif Technical Sales and Marketing Scholarship

This $3,000 award is reserved for learners pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business or engineering with a concentration in marketing or sales. Applicants should possess a 2.5 or higher GPA and be U.S. or Canadian citizens. This one is closed for the year but will reopen again in early 2024 so mark your calendars!

2. Honeywell Scholarship

Offered by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), this award is for students in a graduate or undergraduate program preparing for a career in computer science , engineering , or engineering technology. Awards range from $1,000-$15,000. Applicants must identify as women and be enrolled in an ABET-accredited program. 7. Western Digital Scholarship Program

This award is reserved for any undergraduate student who is a biological dependent of a Western Digital employee. Applicants must be enrolled, or plan on enrolling, in a four-year college or university program as a full-time student. Competitive applicants possess a 3.0 or higher GPA. Awards range from $2,000-$5,000. The application opens in January and is usually due at the beginning of April.

8. Cathay Bank Foundation Scholarship Program

The foundation offers up to 20 scholarships of $1,000 to outstanding high school seniors each year. Applicants must reside in California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, or Washington. The need-based award is for learners who plan on attending a four-year program in one of the states previously listed and possess a 3.0 or higher cumulative high school GPA. 9. James R. Bullock Scholarship

Applicants must have plans to attend a degree-granting, accredited college or university in the U.S. Up to 150 scholars are chosen each year for this $20,000 award. Applications will be open from August 1-October 2, 2023 for students who will graduate during the 2023-2024 academic year.

12. ASHRAE General Scholarship

The ASHRAE General Scholarship award is worth $5,000. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students with a 3.0 or higher GPA at an ABET-accredited institution. Applications must include official academic transcripts and three signed letters of recommendation. Applications are due by December 1, 2023.

13. Tennessee HOPE Scholarship

Funded by the proceeds from the Tennessee State Lottery, this award is for new college freshmen enrolling in one of 16 eligible colleges or universities in the state. The award is for $1,500-$2,250 per semester, depending on whether the student is attending a two- or four-year school. Students with a 3.0 or higher GPA planning to pursue a bachelor’s or associate degree are eligible to apply. Standardized test scores may be required. Applications are due by September 1 each year.

14. Children of Veterans Tuition Grant

Applicants must be biological or adopted 16-26-year-old children of veterans living in Michigan. Their veteran parents must have passed away or become disabled as a result of their military service. Applicants should have a 2.25 or higher GPA and be enrolled at least half-time at a participating institution in Michigan. Full-time students can receive up to $2,800 per academic year. The application deadline varies per year.

15. Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program

Applicants must be Florida residents and a U.S. or eligible citizen to apply. Prospective recipients must have graduated from a Florida high school with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Applications must include documentation of at least 75 hours of community service. Competitive ACT or SAT scores are also required. This award is worth up to $212.71 per credit hour. Applications are due by August 31 after high school graduation.

16. The Scott McClean Love Scholarship

This award is for undergraduate learners with a 2.0 or higher GPA who are children of former U.S. Army personnel. Eligible students have graduated high school, currently attending a college or university, and are 24 years old or younger. Awards range from $500-$2,000 per year. Applications open every January and close in April.

17. Robert W. White, Sr. Scholarship

The Robert W. White, Sr. Scholarship is for full-time students who are juniors or seniors in a four-year welding engineering degree program. Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a 3.2 or higher GPA. This need-based scholarship requires proof of financial need and is renewable for up to two years. The $2,500 award may be used for tuition and fees only. Applications are due by March 1 each year. 

18. Pearl Scholarship

The Pearl Scholarship is for students in Oregon who have lived or remain in foster care and want to attend a public college or university in the state . The award is for those interested in studying health sciences. Applicants should be 26 years old or younger and plan to enroll at least half-time in school. The amount awarded varies per year. Applications are open from November - March for the upcoming academic year. 

19. General Mills Internship and Scholarship

This program is open to graduate students enrolled in a food science program who want to take on a paid summer research and development internship. The scholarship portion of the award is worth $4,800 for one academic year. Prospective recipients should have a 3.0 or higher GPA and must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for fall 2022 to be eligible. Applications are due by September 30. 

20. Scholarship America Dream Award

Applicants for the American Dream Award must be 17 years of age or older with at least one year of college completed. Look At Your School’s Scholarship Offerings

One of the best starting points when seeking scholarships is your current or preferred school. Most post-secondary institutions in Canada offer scholarships for their students based on academic achievement, financial needs, or program of study. 

An advantage of school-offered scholarship programs is lower competition. Compared to nationally or provincially offered scholarships, those provided within your school will typically have fewer applicants, which means you’ll have higher chances of being selected as a recipient.

To help you excel in your scholarship applications, here are some tips I can offer as someone who obtained several scholarships myself. ●      Apply Early :  Cramming is no stranger to many students. However, if you want to win the best scholarships possible, make it a habit to apply early. Many scholarships have time-consuming requirements such as essays, in-person interviews, and tests. If you apply at the last minute, there is a chance you could be rejected by default because there’s not enough time for you to finish all the prerequisites. 

●      Make Applying A Routine:  If you’re serious about winning scholarships, make sending applications a routine, not a one-time thing. Do not focus solely on your dream programs. The more applications you send, the higher your chances of getting financial aid for your studies. 

Set aside a specific amount of time each week to prepare your scholarship applications and make this allocated time non-negotiable.

●      Reach Out To Your School Counselor:  School counsellors tend to be the most knowledgeable about financial aid for students. Reach out to them as early as possible to have a head start in the application process. School counsellors often recommend programs directly, based on your school records and current program. In other cases, they’ll introduce you to a financial aid expert who can walk you through the scholarship opportunities that are best suited for you. 

●      Practice Your Essays:  Many scholarship applications require a self-written essay about your personal life, achievements, or goals. As early and as much as possible, hone your writing skills to have better chances at winning the hearts of the scholarship committee. Online courses are available for essay writing if you want to take formal lessons. There are also beneficial tools like Grammarly to help you know you’re not making any glaring errors in your applications. Alternatively, you can get assistance from your parents or teachers that are willing to review your essays.

●      Consider Small Scholarships:  Most students aim for scholarships that cover the entirety of their tuition fee. While there’s nothing wrong with seeking the big fish, this shouldn’t prevent you from considering smaller scholarship awards offered by your school, community, or companies. The best part about applying for smaller scholarship programs is their easier requirements and less competitive nature. This means you won’t need to prepare for your application extensively, and you have more chances of being chosen as the scholarship recipient. 

●      Tailor Your Applications:  Avoid sending generic scholarship applications and essays. For every program you’re applying for, know the sponsor’s priorities and values, and tailor your submissions to present yourself in a way that fits their description of a worthy student. This strategy helps you stand out and give you more chances of being selected for the scholarship program.

●      Accept Rejections:  When applying for scholarships, learn to accept the rejections that come your way. Not winning one scholarship shouldn’t stop you from applying to other programs that can potentially win you not just one but several offers.

Offered by a law firm that specializes in accident and injury claims, this $500 scholarship can be awarded to the applicant who creates the best 3-minute or less video focused on an annual topic related to distracted driving. High school seniors or currently enrolled college students are eligible. The videos are judged on creativity and persuasiveness.

This online retailer for headsets offers a $1,000 scholarship to an ambitious student who is at least 16 years of age, has maintained a 3.0 GPA and is a legal resident or citizen of the United States. Students must create a video of less than five minutes that showcases who they are, why they are seeking a degree in their field, and other points of interest.

Offered by SuperCollege.com, this scholarship of $1,000 is meant for those who are currently in school or about to start, and is earmarked for a variety of educational expenses. This "Rinse, Recycle, Repeat" scholarship through DoSomething.org focuses on creating bins for bathrooms that help individuals remember to recycle their plastic packaging. Applicants must get creative with their project for the chance to win $5,000. This campaign is open at various times throughout the year.

Offered by a website specializing in scholarships, this $10,000 award starts with a short entry form online. We mean it when we say there is a scholarship out there for everyone. Scholarships and financial awards are awarded at all levels for students of all disciplines and backgrounds. Some may require a formal application, while others can be administered upon automatic consideration. The criteria for scholarships and financial awards vary. Academic achievement is not always mandatory for eligibility. Often, students who participate in school or community activities can win scholarships based largely on their extra curricular involvement. Likewise, students with specific talents, hobbies, ethnic backgrounds or family affiliations can meet award qualifications.

Types of merit scholarships

There are several kinds of merit scholarships that students can win. Here are the most common categories:

When most people think about merit scholarships, they generally think about academic scholarships. These are given to students who have excellent grades and high test scores.

Academic scholarships often have a minimum GPA requirement , but you’ll also often need letters of recommendation and a winning essay. Remember, even with a near perfect transcript you still need to stand out.

Athletic scholarships are generally given from the school itself. However, there are also organizations that award scholarships for sports-inclined students. There may or may not be some athletic achievement requirements, such as being a varsity athlete or going to the state championships. You may also need a reference letter from a coach.

For example, the Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship is given to a student from Iowa who is also a stellar athlete. There are two awards, one for a male athlete and one for a female athlete. The scholarship is worth $1,000.

Artistic scholarships are given to students who display a talent for the arts. To apply for one of these scholarships, you usually have to submit your portfolio or a selection of your work. These scholarships may also require a recommendation letter from a current or previous art teacher.

These artistic scholarships are often only available to certain kinds of artists. For example, the BMI Future Jazz Master Scholarship is given to a college student studying jazz. However, there may also be some general art scholarships.

Demographic-based

A demographic-based merit scholarship is given to a student who is part of a certain group. For example, there are certain merit-based scholarships just for Asian-American students or students who identify as LGBTQIA+ .

For example, the Blacks at Microsoft scholarship is given to an African-American student who is majoring in a STEM field. This merit-based scholarship has both demographic and academic requirements that students must meet to qualify.

What kinds of merit scholarships are there.

You can get a merit scholarship based on your success in athletics, academics or in other areas. There may also be merit scholarships for students from a certain ethnicity, gender or other minority group.

Where can I find merit scholarships?

I didn’t take the SATs or ACT - Can I still apply for a merit scholarship?

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many schools have stopped requiring the SAT or ACT, making it easier for students who don’t test well. Because of this, many students no longer take standardized tests.

Some scholarships have updated their applications to reflect this and no longer require students to submit their SAT or ACT scores. However, this isn’t true for all scholarships. If you don’t want to take these standardized tests, look for scholarships that don’t ask for them or list them as optional.

Do I need a perfect GPA to receive a merit scholarship?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a 4.0 GPA to win a merit scholarship. The exact GPA requirement will vary based on the scholarship, but it usually starts at 3.0.

Some experts say that a minimum 3.5 GPA is necessary to win a merit scholarship. However, the awarding organization may look at other aspects like your extracurricular record, recommendation letters and essay. They may also consider your life circumstances, such as being in the foster care system, losing a parent early on or being an immigrant.

Remember, as long as you meet the basic requirements, you should apply to as many merit scholarships as possible. There’s no point in taking yourself out of the running by not applying.

How can I increase the odds of winning a merit scholarship?

Some schools offer a generous merit aid package - as long as you apply early enough. Many internal scholarships are only given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once you determine which schools you’re interested in, try to submit your application as soon as possible.

Also, many students lose out on scholarships just because they don’t submit everything that is required. For example, if you are supposed to send in two letters of recommendation and you only provide one, your application will likely be denied.

Remember, scholarships often receive hundreds or even thousands of applicants. Not submitting everything is an easy way to get disqualified immediately.

Also, have someone look at your scholarship application before you submit it and correct any typos. These mistakes may make it look like you don’t really care and can hurt your chances.

Do all schools offer merit scholarships?

Some schools do not offer merit-based aid and only provide awards based on demonstrated financial need. For example, Ivy League schools generally only offer need-based aid , even if you have a perfect GPA and get a 2400 on the SATs.

If your family is not eligible for need-based aid but can’t afford the full cost of college tuition, look for schools that offer merit scholarships.

If you are accepted at an Ivy League school and want to attend, focus on applying for all the third-party scholarships you can find. These can help you bridge the financial gap so you don’t end up with hundreds of thousands in student loans.

Are international students eligible for merit scholarships?

Most scholarships are only given to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and other eligible non-citizens. If you’re an international student, getting a merit scholarship will be much tougher.

You may be better off looking for scholarships within your native country and using those to pay for your education abroad. Also, some schools offer discounted tuition to international students. This can also save you money and minimize how much you have to borrow.

Can I renew a merit scholarship?

Some scholarships are only given for one year, whereas others can be renewed for several years. However, to renew a scholarship, you usually have to meet some basic requirements, like maintaining a certain GPA or taking a certain number of credit hours toward your degree.

What Do “Test-Optional” and Similar Policies Mean?

The risk of taking the SAT is fairly low, while the potential reward can be high, as strong scores can improve your chances of admission and help you qualify for more institutional aid. I spent the last week talking with university officials, teachers and high school seniors about the dreaded college admissions essay.

I cover education technology at The Times. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, which can manufacture school essays and other texts, might reshape the college application process.

I was particularly interested to learn whether admissions officials were rejiggering their essay questions — or even reconsidering personal essays altogether.

Amid a deluge of high school transcripts and teacher recommendations, admissions officers often use students’ writing samples to identify applicants with unique voices, experiences, ideas and potential. How might that change now that many students are using A.I. chatbots to brainstorm topics, generate rough drafts and hone their essays?

To find out, I contacted admissions officials at more than a dozen large state universities, Ivy League schools and small private colleges, including Juan Espinoza , the director of undergraduate admissions at Virginia Tech.

Right now, he told me, many universities are still trying to figure out how the A.I. technologies work and what they mean for the admissions process.

CNTA awards scholarships to essay contest winners

Eight high school students representing six schools across the area have been awarded a scholarship from Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness for outstanding essays on a nuclear topic. The scholarship awards ranged from $500 to $1,000. Each student picked a topic ranging from a comparison of greenhouse gases to nuclear power, use of isotopes in medical procedures and diagnostics, or nuclear technology on Mars.
