Computer Science Ph.D. Program

The Cornell Ph.D. program in computer science is consistently ranked among the top six departments in the country, with world-class research covering all of computer science. Our computer science program is distinguished by the excellence of the faculty, by a long tradition of pioneering research, and by the breadth of its Ph.D. program. Faculty and Ph.D. students are located both in Ithaca and in New York City at the Cornell Tech campus . The Field of Computer Science also includes faculty members from other departments (Electrical Engineering, Information Science, Applied Math, Mathematics, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Computational Biology, and Architecture) who can supervise a student's Ph.D. thesis research in computer science.

Over the past years we've increased our strength in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer graphics, systems, security, machine learning, and digital libraries, while maintaining our depth in traditional areas such as theory, programming languages and scientific computing.  You can find out more about our research here . 

The department provides an exceptionally open and friendly atmosphere that encourages the sharing of ideas across all areas. 

Cornell is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. This beautiful area provides many opportunities for recreational activities such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, both downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, rock climbing, hiking, camping, and brewery/cider/wine-tasting. In fact, Cornell offers courses in all of these activities.

The Cornell Tech campus in New York City is located on Roosevelt Island.  Cornell Tech  is a graduate school conceived and implemented expressly to integrate the study of technology with business, law, and design. There are now over a half-dozen masters programs on offer as well as doctoral studies.

Ph.D. Program Structure

Each year, about 30-40 new Ph.D. students join the department. During the first two semesters, students become familiar with the faculty members and their areas of research by taking graduate courses, attending research seminars, and participating in research projects. By the end of the first year, each student selects a specific area and forms a committee based on the student's research interests. This “Special Committee” of three or more faculty members will guide the student through to a Ph.D. dissertation. Ph.D. students that decide to work with a faculty member based at Cornell Tech typically move to New York City after a year in Ithaca.

The Field believes that certain areas are so fundamental to Computer Science that all students should be competent in them. Ph.D. candidates are expected to demonstrate competency in four areas of computer science at the high undergraduate level: theory, programming languages, systems, and artificial intelligence.

Each student then focuses on a specific topic of research and begins a preliminary investigation of that topic. The initial results are presented during a comprehensive oral evaluation, which is administered by the members of the student's Special Committee. The objective of this examination, usually taken in the third year, is to evaluate a student's ability to undertake original research at the Ph.D. level.

The final oral examination, a public defense of the dissertation, is taken before the Special Committee.

To encourage students to explore areas other than Computer Science, the department requires that students complete an outside minor. Cornell offers almost 90 fields from which a minor can be chosen. Some students elect to minor in related fields such as Applied Mathematics, Information Science, Electrical Engineering, or Operations Research. Others use this opportunity to pursue interests as diverse as Music, Theater, Psychology, Women's Studies, Philosophy, and Finance.

The computer science Ph.D. program complies with the requirements of the Cornell Graduate School , which include requirements on residency, minimum grades, examinations, and dissertation.

The Department also administers a very small 2-year Master of Science program (with thesis). Students in this program serve as teaching assistants and receive full tuition plus a stipend for their services.

The PhD degree is intended primarily for students who desire a career in research, advanced development, or teaching. A broad Computer Science, Engineering, Science background, intensive study, and research experience in a specialized area are the necessary requisites.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is conferred on candidates who have demonstrated to the satisfaction of our Department in the following areas:

• high attainment in a particular field of knowledge, and
• the ability to do independent investigation and present the results of such research.

They must satisfy the general requirements for advanced degrees, and the program requirements specified by our Department.

On average, the program is completed in five to six years, depending on the student’s research and progress.

Annual reviews only apply to PhD students in their second year or later; yearly meetings are held for all PhD students.

World University Rankings 2022 by subject: computer science

The computer science subject table uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the  Times Higher Education  World University Rankings 2022, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the discipline.

This year’s table includes 891 universities, up from 827 last year.

The University of Oxford leads the table for the fourth consecutive year, while Princeton University joins the top 10 after climbing one place to 10th.

There are also some eye-catching improvements for the US just outside the top 10: UCLA rises five places to 11th, Caltech rises 12 places to 13th and Washington rises five places to 16th, largely because of improvements in their teaching and research scores.

Australia has a new number one university for computer science: the University of Melbourne, which ranks 51st overall.

Three institutions rank in the top 100 in their debut year; Institut Polytechnique de Paris is 48th, Université Paris-Saclay is 76th and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan is joint 88th.

Philosophy + CS undergraduate Max Fan awarded National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Max Fan, a junior Philosophy + CS major, has recently been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship   which will provide three years of financial support for his graduate studies. Fan will graduate this May and begin his PhD at Cornell University in the fall.  

While at the University of Illinois, and during a summer internship at NASA in 2023, Fan proposed and developed a new temporal logic semantics, a topic he first encountered in a class taught by philosophy professor Kohei Kishida.  

Temporal logic is a system of rules for representing and reasoning about propositions that change over time. In computer science, and at NASA, it’s used to specify when safety conditions should be triggered and to determine when a system is behaving nominally.  

“They don’t like bugs, and they don’t like things going wrong,” Fan said. “And so, the idea is you have all these requirements for how your rocket or how your satellite ought to behave. So, if your satellite does this, it should then do this, and these logics have a temporal nature.”  

For example, a temporal property might say “after the parachute deploys then the machine should decelerate.” Once the temporal property is specified, it is important to monitor the system to verify if it is behaving as expected. When a property is violated, the error should be handled as quickly as possible. 

Fan soon recognized that the standard temporal logic semantics that most people in computer science work with were not sufficient for NASA’s purposes. His coursework in philosophy helped him realize he could develop his own semantics that better captured the problem he was trying to solve.  

“My philosophical training allowed me to think outside the box and develop a different way that didn’t rely on the standard approaches,” he said. “I think there’s a reason why no one else thought of this before because people generally take the standard temporal logic semantics and do other things with it. But they don’t think about changing the actual ground rules.” 

He proposed a non-standard temporal logic semantics that will work better to solve NASA’s and other computer science problems. He has a paper in progress that he is hoping to submit to a conference soon.  

Fan also regularly seeks out perspectives on logic from researchers working in fields outside his major. He organizes a weekly lunch for those working on logic in computer science that also attracts professors and students in philosophy, electrical and computer engineering, and math. 

“The idea is that people who are interested in logic or logic adjacent come and talk about research and what people are working on,” he said. “It’s quite nice to see everyone and to hear about a different perspective. The math department has a certain kind of flavor of the research, which is a little different than the philosophy department, which is different than the flavor in the CS department.” 

Fan’s research interests include the intersection of computer science and philosophy, epistemology, and logic and truth, which is why he decided to major in philosophy + CS . In addition to professor Kishida, he also cites philosophy professor Jonathan Livengood, and computer science professor Talia Ringer as mentors during his time at the university.  

The NSF fellowship is not the first accolade he has received for his work. In his sophomore year, he received a Barry M. Goldwater scholarship for his potential to contribute to the advancement of research in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. A fellow philosophy junior, Sylvia E, was also recently honored with a Goldwater Scholarship.   

His favorite courses have been the graduate seminars he has participated in, including the philosophy of logic graduate seminar, which he took twice, and the conceptual engineering seminar taught by philosophy professor Kevin Scharp. 

“I think all the courses [in philosophy] are actually very well taught. Like some departments are hit and miss. But every course here has been a hit. …The quality of instruction is quite high,” he said.

Dean's award 2024 – civil engineering and mathematics graduate anna babchanik found a formula for success through community.

Solving equations and exploring dams may not sound like fun activities for some, but they bring Anna Babchanik a world of joy.

As early as grade school, she knew she wanted a career where she could utilize her love for mathematics.

“I was doing math problems for fun when I didn't even need to,” she said. “My homework was done, and I didn't need to study for exams. I was just solving problems in my spare time.”

Babchanik, who graduated cum laude from Sac State in December as a double-major with bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Mathematics, is this year’s Dean’s Award recipient from the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS). Deans’ Awards are given at Commencement to the top graduating student from each of Sac State’s seven academic colleges.

Born in Sacramento, Babchanik is one of nine children. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Ukraine in the late 1990s following the fall of the Soviet Union. The nine siblings – six of whom have Sac State degrees in STEM fields – were raised with emphasis on their Slavic heritage, including a heavy focus on language, family and faith.

“I think the way I grew up helped me build my independence and determination for my passions,” Babchanik said. “The way I was raised definitely influenced the way I see the world and the people in it, and the way I treat people with respect and kindness and empathy.”

Babchanik originally planned to pursue medicine, but quickly realized she most enjoyed the math aspects. After some heavy nudging from her brother, she switched majors from Biochemistry to Civil Engineering and added Mathematics as a second major.

While participating in the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure program at UC Davis, she fell in love with geotechnical engineering, a sub-field of Civil Engineering dealing with the behavior of earthly materials, such as soil. Her research focused on examining erosion and cracking of land that can lead to dam failures and structural issues.

“I think dams or embankments are the most interesting geotechnical structure,” she said. “They’re carefully designed and critical in providing flood control, hydroelectric power and irrigation for agricultural purposes, among other things.”

Babchanik has also served as an instructional assistant in undergraduate courses, sharpened her skills in the University of Southern California Viterbi Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, interned at the Department of Water Resources in the Division of Safety of Dams, contributed to publications and presented research at multiple events.

In addition to participating in several clubs and professional affiliations, she received several scholarships and awards and made the ECS Dean’s Honor List multiple times. At Sac State, she co-organized the Change Makers Series and served as president of the Math Club.

“Beyond her academic achievements, Anna has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving her community and inspiring future generations of civil engineers,” said Kevan Shafizadeh, ECS dean. “Through her volunteer work, mentorship and participation in outreach events, she has sought to share her experiences and encourages others to pursue their academic and professional aspirations in STEM.”

Cultural expectations initially caused her family to push back against Babchanik’s switch from medicine to engineering, but support from professors and fellow Civil Engineering students helped her persevere. Through her accomplishments, she earned the support of her family.

“I just came to realize the importance that community had for me, and having that support system,” she said. “My peers and professors were very encouraging and supportive in (that) no matter how rigorous something got, they were always there, and they also celebrated my achievements with me.”

Ultimately, her passion for helping others drives her success.

“As a woman in traditionally male-dominated fields, I see and understand the value of inclusivity, and I recognize barriers and challenges that underrepresented students are going through,” said Babchanik, who will begin a master’s program at Stanford University focusing on mechanics and computation. She wants to be the first in her family to earn a doctorate.

Amherst College, a private school in Amherst, Massachusetts, is known for its rigorous academic climate. Because Amherst is a member of the Five Colleges consortium, students can also take courses at Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College and the University of Massachusetts—Amherst.

Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University is a public school tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Students at Appalachian have many programs, sports, and clubs to choose from, including the Appalachian Popular Programming Society, which plans campus events. 

Arizona State University

Arizona State University’s Tempe campus offers more than 200 research-based programs in the arts, business, engineering and more. The campus is located just outside of Phoenix, in the suburb of Tempe, Arizona.

Auburn University

Auburn, Alabama, has been ranked one of the best places to live, and life at Auburn University can be similarly enjoyable for students. Football is a particularly big attraction in the fall, as fans support the Auburn Tigers with the help of school mascot Aubie the Tiger. The Tiger sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference, and the influx of football fans makes Auburn the fifth-largest city in the state on game days. Pep rallies are held in the downtown Toomer's Corner, and the area is covered in toilet paper by fans after every big victory. There are more than 500 student organizations on campus, and about 6,000 students are involved in the school's Greek system. Auburn freshmen ease into the college transition through Camp War Eagle, a two-day, overnight summer orientation program. Transition help continues on Hey Day, an annual effort to get students to wear name tags and say hello to one another. Freshmen do not have to live on campus; in fact, a dorm room isn't even guaranteed. Because of space restraints, first-year students are awarded on-campus living assignments on a first-come, first-served basis.
