Unlike our previous EssayPro review , this time, we’ll ask them to write an academic assignment from scratch instead of editing a paper we already had.

We ordered a 4-page nursing essay to be delivered in five days where their professional writer would have to describe the microorganism “Bacillus Anthracis” and explain several factors related to it.

Overall, we can say it started on the right track. Placing our order was very easy, but as we progressed in our journey, we started finding more and more aspects that we didn’t like. And by the end, we got a paper with many problems and a discovery that we didn’t see coming.

Ordering Process

To show how EssayPro’s ordering process works, we divided it into two parts:

To place our order, we had to complete their pricing calculator with all the basic information:

• Assignment type
• Number of pages/word

After that, we had to create an account to log into their portal. You can sign up with your email, Facebook, or Google account.

Once there, we had to include all the missing details, such as:

• Assignment topic and subject
• Number of required sources
• Citation format
• Paper instructions

Finally, we attached the assignment requirements with its additional instructions and grading rubric. This way, our assigned essay writer could have a better guide on how to complete our order.

Then, we simply placed our request and moved to the next section: choosing the writer.

But overall, this first part, where we had to fill in all the important information regarding our assignment, felt super easy, intuitive, and fast. The form asks for all the essential details (such as the styling format and the number of sources required) and lets you include anything you need.

Bids From Writers

Now is when the ordering process gets a bit more overwhelming.

EssayPro works with a bidding service. Meaning, that while you get a starting price when you fill in their pricing calculator, but then you can get different offers from their catalog of professional essay writers.

At first we found this reasonable, as you have to chance to pay a bit more for a writer you feel can be a better fit for your college assignment.

However, we quickly found two problems.

1) We received too many bids from writers way faster

In over 90 seconds, we got 41 different offers. That’s like two writers’ bids per second!

And it wasn’t like they were automatically sent just to give us a wide range of prices. Each bid came along with a message from that writer, telling us things like:

• "I have already read our instructions and am familiarized with your topic"
• "Please give me a chance to complete this assignment for you"
• "I guarantee professionalism, plagiarism-free paper, and timely work"

Most of them were very general and didn’t refer to anything in particular about our order.

However, after the first 90 seconds, we received a few more messages that at least mentioned that they knew about our chosen microorganism or that they were R.N. and therefore were a great fit.

Besides the pricing (which we’ll talk about in a bit), another factor that helps you choose the writer is the description each one has. Here, you’ll find a short bio about them and a list of all the topics these experienced writers are good at.

While many of these descriptions were detailed and included client reviews, a success rate, and many promising facts about the professionals, we didn’t find a way to verify their credentials. These profiles don’t have a link that takes you to LinkedIn or somewhere that corroborates that “expert writer” experience.

And because you don’t even get the writer’s full name (they only tell you the first letter of the surname) , you can’t look them up on Google or social media.

For us, getting so many bids (over 40!) in less than two minutes feels completely overwhelming and fake , especially if we consider that most of the messages we received with the offers were automated and weren’t written toward us.

And even those messages that did address a detail related to our order then had a few sentences that seemed quickly copy-pasted into the chat.

This was our first indicator that EssayPro sees our order as a number to be completed instead of a student asking for real help with one assignment.

So, even though the ordering process started with an easy-to-follow form, it later overwhelmed us with too many different options in just a few minutes. 

That’s why we are grading them a 6/10.

Now, to better explain the second problem with the bidding system, we need to talk about EssayPro’s prices.

EssayPro Prices

Pricing for each essay service for students who are at college start at:

• Editing Service: $5.7 per page
• Rewriting Service: $.7.98 per page
• Academic Writing Service:
• Easy Projects (Essay, review, case study): $11.4 per page
• Medium Projects (Research papers, thesis, term paper):$12.35 per page
• Hard Projects (Lab reports, admission essay): +$13.3 per page

Still, it’s worth mentioning that if it’s your first order, with every additional page you add, you get a 5% discount. This means that if you need a 7-page paper, you’ll get a 30% discount!

In our case, we got 15% of f. Instead of $36, we had a minimum price of $32.30.

But if these look like affordable prices, then what’s the problem we mentioned during the writers’ selection part? Well…

2) Almost all offers were more expensive than our initial price

From the 41 writers’ bids we received, only five maintained the cost we got in the initial calculator. The rest had more expensive fees, most with average prices between $40 and $50, and one of them even asked for $72!

Yes, that’s more than double our starting minimum price.

For us, the fact that EssayPro first presents its services with a minimal price, only to later offer you options that are mostly more expensive than it is a huge downside. Even if these don’t stop being accessible prices, we feel like they are making us think that we need to pay more to receive a top-quality paper.

This is because these alternatives with higher prices come from “experienced writers” who supposedly have more knowledge in the field our essay is about. And the extra dollar could be worth it; if only they gave us a way to verify that their credentials and background are real.

And how does EssayPro's payment work?

Instead of directly sending the money to the writer, you have to make a deposit in your account. 

You can release the payment once the assignment was completed and you feel happy with the final result. This way, you know for sure that the paper meets your quality standards and that the assigned professional will do their best to deliver it.

And the biggest advantage they have in comparison to other professional writing services is that they don’t have additional costs . While other companies charge extra for key essay elements like plagiarism reports, outlines, and revisions, all of these are included in your order in case you need them.

One point in their favor.

Still, we didn’t like how our original cost didn’t look like the real price EssayPro wanted us to pay. So, we are giving them a 6.

Experience With The Writer

With all of the different bids offered, we now had to pick one.

Because we wanted to stick with the minimum price EssayPro originally presented to us, we only had five options to choose from.

In the end, we chose Kelly D., a biologist with a background in fields like biomedical sciences, health sciences, and chemistry . She also had completed more than 1,000 orders, a high satisfaction rate, and an overall rating of 4.9.

Once we hired her, she sent us a message thanking us.

Our communication with her was adequate and timely. EssayPro has an integrated chat window in their portal, where you can get in touch with your writer whenever you need.

In our case, we greeted Kelly and told her that she could let us know whether she had questions about the instructions and that we were happy to help her. A few seconds later, she reached out back to thank us and confirm she would tell us if needed.

Initially, we felt great about having a real person writing genuine messages instead of copy-pasting sentences.

Sadly, when she delivered our paper, she addressed us as “dear client” and that she had completed the assignment. Another automated message.

Still, aside from this detail, we felt that our experience with Kelly was satisfactory . We had the opportunity to get in touch with her if needed, as much as she could ask us any questions regarding the instructions.

This is why we are giving them an 8.

Essay Quality

Now, let’s see in-depth one of the most important sections of our EssayPro Review: the overall quality of our paper.

Just like we did in our former essay service reviews, we asked Chiqui, our in-house Editor in Chief, to review the essay we got in detail and tell us if it was up to their standards or was the product of an average-quality service.

And unfortunately, the final result is closer to this second option.

Clarity and Comprehension

The first big mistake we noticed is that our writer didn’t include the name of our chosen microorganism in the introductio n and simply refers to “Bacillus Anthrasis” as “it.” Our bacteria was first mentioned in the second paragraph.

This is a basic error that no experienced writer should make.

Regarding the overall structure of the essay, it was acceptable and well-organized, with almost no grammatical errors . Kelly followed the guidelines we sent without much trouble, unless for a tiny detail. 

She forgot to write one entire section that was worth 10 points.

Both the instructions and the guideline included a prompt about “Infectious Disease Information.” Still, this heading was nowhere to be found in our essay . Looks like our writer didn’t read the requirements in-depth.

By far, this was the biggest mistake we received in our order.

Because we got two errors that could have been easily avoided, we are giving them a 5 in comprehension.

APA Formatting

But bad news don’ts top there.

While the APA formatting was mostly accurate, it was outdated as it included styling features like a running head and a heading in the introduction, which are no longer required according to the latest version of APA.

Also, the headings were aligned to the left and in bold when they should have been centered without any format. Some even had a period, which sub-headings like these shouldn’t have.

Then, our writer repeated the title of the paper on the first page , when that’s not necessary when you already have a title page.

Still, these were simple mistakes that Kelly should have been aware of. But there were two bigger problems with the APA formatting.

First of all , the paragraphs didn’t have the required indentation that every essay must have. 

But most importantly, our not-so-experienced writer forgot to include the in-text citations from two different sources . While the articles written by Mallozzi and Tuipulotu are listed in the bibliography, they aren’t cited in the text.

This is a huge mistake since crediting your source is critical to avoid plagiarism.

And it’s not like our writer included these references to meet the required minimum. The paper we got clearly has information from multiple sources , and we are sure that these two articles correctly written in the reference list were used in the essay.

However, we can’t know for sure which parts of the text are using information from the sources.

With all that said, we are giving EssayPro a 5 in APA formatting.

Considering the issue we’ve just described, it’s a mistake that has to do with a plagiarism issue as well.

After running it in our plagiarism checker, we didn’t find any duplicated content. Meaning, that our paper was 100% original.

But because we know that two sources from the reference list aren’t properly credited in the text, our writer is committing unwanted plagiarism.

That’s why we are giving them a 6.

How about the guarantees EssayPro offers? Do they have any money-back guarantee?

Well, they have a   refund policy and are transparent with how these work:

In short, they aren’t responsible if you get to use their low-quality paper and get a bad grade. What’s the point of investing your money if they don’t guarantee that you’ll get at least a decent note?

Recently, we reviewed PapersOwl, another academic paper-writing service that, in our opinion, looked too similar to EduBirdie.

In our research, we found that they were indeed part of the same company, which had four different essay-writing services with different names and layouts but shared the same ordering process and writers’ database.

After that experience, we’ve been super careful in checking that other “top-quality services” were who they claim and not just one sub-company owned by a larger service.

Since EssayPro is such a reputable writing service with many years in the market, we imagined that this wouldn’t be the case for them.

We were wrong.

We found that the services EssayHub and WritePaper have the same process and workflow as EssayPro. We know this because they have identical:

We took our favorite hair model’s profile and replaced its URL from “essaypro.com” to “ essayhub.com ” and “ writepaper.com “, only maintaining his writer ID.

Just like we were expecting, Thomas S. has the exact same profile on each website. Same (fake) photo, reviews, and ratings.

But contrary to PapersOwl and EduBirdie, who weren’t trying to hide the fact that they belonged to the same company, as it was mentioned in their Terms of Service, EssayPro , EssayHub , and WritePaper don’t say anything related to their shared database in their terms.

This is because there is nothing illegal about this . It’s just a strategy to reach more clients who are looking for multiple alternatives when looking for a reliable service to trust.

Once again, EssayPro is not a scam but is not a legit service either . 

They aren’t clear on what is the actual workflow behind their process and demonstrate that they are more interested in receiving more orders from different sites rather than truly helping the student making the request.

Hi guys! Today, I’m going to share a story of a lifetime – my experience with a popular essay writing service called EssayPro.

Usually, I would find a way to blitz through my essay, but once I got another important task to work on, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do the paper justice. So, I pulled out my laptop and decided to search for last-minute essay writing solutions.

I found several options but still decided to go with this catchy name — EssayPro. Who wouldn’t want essay specialists to work on their paper, right?

So, here is my detailed EssayPro review based on my experience with this writing service. Let’s get down to brass tacks.

EssayPro is an academic paper writing service operated by a Ukrainian company Devellux that promises to connect “talented specialist writers” with students in need of urgent academic assistance. Notably, the company’s physical address displayed on their website is Dover, Delaware, but it is actually a Ukrainian-held business. The platform provides essay writing services globally but focuses primarily on the US, UK, UAE, Australian, and Canadian audiences.

The company claims to have worked with over 200k students during its 10+ years of existence. Based on the data I saw on their site, they have over 400 Essaypro writers on standby.

The company also states to have completed over 900 000 academic papers in 2020 alone. For context, that’s six essays per day for every writer (about 2470 orders over 365 days for 400 writers). That’s one heck of a completion rate! Most people would struggle with such a workload.

When it comes to the best essay writing service reviews , another standout feature is their unique bidding system, which serves as their business model. This aspect initially caught my attention, although I must confess I didn’t have the time to thoroughly examine the Terms and Conditions of the service at first. Nevertheless, it’s reassuring to note that both the ‘Terms and Conditions’ and ‘Privacy and Refund Policy’ pages are readily accessible.

My Experience with EssayPro

I was assigned a pretty urgent discussion post in which I was supposed to answer a question based on some readings. It was clearly stated in the prompt that there was a correct answer which was to be derived from class discussions and readings. So I decided to let professionals handle this task, hoping I would get a decent quality level and timely delivery.   

Unfortunately, the way communication turned out was nothing like the picture that I painted in my head. First off, my writer has completely ignored the paper instructions, even though they were detailed enough. Instead, he posed a hardly understandable question, and when I asked for clarifications, he simply chose the best way to complete the assignment without my input. Besides, my writer couldn’t even write in English properly. 

Secondly, users have zero knowledge of their paper’s status. I wanted to see the order’s status change to Revision or something, but instead, I just wrote to them in a chat, and that’s it. No updates and notifications seen on the horizon. 

In terms of quality, it was quite visible that the writer conducted some research for the paper. However, I discovered that he mixed up MLA and APA formatting guidelines for in-text citations. Plus, nobody was interested in the number of sources. The writer decided to insert one source intuitively, although there were three to be added. 

Moreover, I was shocked to discover that the writer left a URL to their local folder on the Works Cited page. To me, that is not appropriate. 

The grammar and text structure were just merely acceptable. It was pretty evident that some writers are not native English speakers. At least the person that worked on my paper definitely wasn’t. Since I paid close to 60$ for this 3-page paper, I had to place two revisions to get the optimal quality level. 

On top of that, I received my paper later than expected, after my deadline was due. And to completely spoil the day, the writer sent me a wrong paper that was supposed to be someone else’s. How cool is that?

When I complained about this blunder, I got the following response:

All EssayPro reviews on the Internet indicate that the company provides only one major communication channel – the chat box, which is true as I discovered. Customers can also intuitively understand how to use their profiles, which is a plus for user experience. Also, you can discuss order details with the writer before they start working on the paper.

But here’s the catch: you’ll need to play hide and seek before reaching out to the writer; one can easily assume that the right window is meant for direct communication with the writer, but not a bot and support staff. While in fact, it’s vice versa.

Even chatting with customer support is a challenge here. First, you need to hit “Help Center,” send a message in a chat window, go through a blockade of annoying AI-generated messages, then wait for several minutes to get a response, and only after that get a real human being to chat with you. 

When I finally got in touch with the customer support specialist to clarify some order details, I was expecting to get responses right away. To my surprise, I waited three minutes to get the answer to a simple question. What seems to be like no big deal at first turned into a slippery slope of impatience (I got further messages with delays too).

If anything else is more important than quality for customers using the best essay writing services, it is the rules of personal information disclosure. Once I inquired customer support about this sensitive matter, they sort of tried to get away with the answer and kept on asking me about my order details. This puts the company in a position of pure money-makers who don’t pay much attention to users’ privacy. Yet, after my second attempt to find out the truth, they responded to me with a relieving message.

Order form/usability at EssayPro

As the chat box is the only communication channel provided by this service, I had to place my order there. I provided the prompt, and the support agent asked me about my academic level and deadline, but nobody inquired about my discipline or the number of sources to be used. 

Nevertheless, I felt relieved once the support cropped my instructions. I logged in and checked on that to make sure all is fine:

But I also felt like a supervisor trying to monitor the support agent’s work just to sleep better, knowing that I got what I needed. They canceled the initial order and placed a new one with full instructions. 

I left my email in the profile and waited for any sign of life from EssayPro to ensure I could stay tuned on the important order updates, but nothing showed up. So, I decided to visit my dashboard and contact the support staff. As it turned out, the paper was already waiting for me on my dashboard. So, why not send a notification? The company only sent me their promo ad. Thanks, but I need my paper!

I think EssayPro should focus more on making the customer journey comfy instead of just promoting their services.

The client cabinet appears to have been developed in haste – that’s what any EssayPro review will tell you, including this one. For example, when you enter the “Chats” section, you see a list of chats with your writer, but you cannot access your conversations with support. For the latter to happen, you need to go to a separate tab, which is not very convenient.

In essence, I could not even figure out how to pay for the order without assistance.

The overall EssayPro cost is in the “above average” bracket when it comes to pricing. The flat fee for any paper is $12 , even though the site says “Essay Writing Service at $7/page” upon Google search. This discrepancy in prices is also mentioned in most EssayPro reviews.

I couldn’t find a pricing table, but they have a price calculator right on the homepage. Essentially, the cost of ordering a paper depends on the following factors:

• Number of pages (words)
• Academic level
• Additional instructions

As I mentioned earlier, EssayPro has a bidding business model. You need to choose among hundreds of offers before landing on a decent writer. However, writers offering relatively low prices usually lack expertise and deliver subpar quality. I got into this trap by opting for such a writer, and the price I paid was a half-baked order. Frankly, I’d rather pay a fixed cost that would be close or even identical to the money I forked out here.

While preparing my Essay Pro review, I decided to take the opportunity to get some discounts that might give me some advantages. By lucky chance, Essay Pro provides an initial discount of 25% on orders of more than one page, but I haven’t found any EssayPro promo code on their website.

However, I became curious and I decided to check the real price by using the online form on the main page after I received my article. I found that the price I paid was higher than the total amount they had put on the site.

Before placing my order at EssayPro, I saw moderate prices on their website and was pretty sure I would pay no more than that. But eventually, I had to pay a much higher sum thanks to their bidding system. And even though my final paper was satisfactory in terms of quality, the struggle I had to go through to get my paper done the way it should have been was not worth it moneywise.

The first confusing thing I noticed about revision requests is the way customer support processes them. I was asked to write in chat in case I have any complaints, but that’s quite an unprofessional approach to handling things. I’d better prefer to have my request left on the customer dashboard with live updates on my order status. Yet, it is what it is. 

Overall, I had to place two revisions since the writer didn’t get my instructions in the first place. Luckily, users can place as many revisions as they want until they are content with the quality. 

EssayPro has a refund policy that takes effect when the customer is displeased with the paper’s final quality. Here are the scenarios when you can apply for a refund:

• Disputed claims
• Duplicate orders
• Plagiarized content

Sounds good, but the trick is that they require users to leave up to 30% to the writer for the work done in case of refund. To me, this sounds unfair because I obviously expect all my money back for their fiasco, not just 70%.

It should be mentioned that Essay Pro guarantees to process refund requests within 48 hours, and their dispute resolution team will review your application. However, there is no guarantee that your request will be considered and a money back guarantee will be satisfied in the desired period.

On the subject of plagiarism, the work I ordered for my Essay Pro review was more than 90% unique. However, I did notice overt attempts at rephrasing which, to my surprise, did not meet the return criteria, as Turnitin showed a high level of uniqueness. I couldn’t argue with the algorithms, so I had to make my own final revisions. It disappointed me a bit as I paid for the essay writing but still had to make some amendments by myself.

If talking about service confidentiality, Essay Pro guarantees complete anonymity and security of your personal information. I was assured that my personal data would not be disclosed, and all I had to do was provide an email address. However, when I initially asked the support team about the privacy terms, they ignored this question. So the question is ‘Is Essay Pro good enough for ordering your paper here?’

On the company’s website, you’ll find mostly positive feedback, which is no surprise at all since most services feature only positive comments. But I was shocked when I found out that I couldn’t leave a testimonial on the EssayPro Reviews page. So, I visited other independent review platforms like Trustpilot and Sitejabber. 

I discovered that EssayPro reviews on these sites were mixed: some clients praised the service, while others complained about gross incompetence. The main concerns had to do with paper quality and plagiarism issues.

Most EssayPro reviews express dismay when it comes to the company’s ‘active’ social media presence. Their Facebook account features just five posts that date back to 2019, while the Instagram account has 9 posts and 35 followers in total. For now, it seems like they don’t really bother about brand promotion through social media platforms.  

I also tried to find essaypro Reddit reviews here because Reddit people aren’t afraid of telling the truth or showing where you made a mistake. Unfortunately, EssayPro doesn’t have a community on the platform.

To sum up this EssayPro review and somehow justify my decision making process, I will say that I chose this service at random to meet my deadline. But on any other day, I wouldn’t recommend their services to anybody. Is Essaypro Legal? Yes, they do everything above board. Does Essaypro work as a fully-functional service? Not really. They are like a chair without one leg: basic internal processes are set, but one essential element is missing: excellent quality paired with timely delivery and care for customers.

I definitely don’t recommend using this service if you don’t want to waste your money! I always think about my college assignments in advance, so I ordered my coursework from EssayPro with a 20-day deadline. The assigned writer hasn’t contacted me at all. Maybe that’s why the paper was far away from the requirements I mentioned in the ordering form. I didn’t ask for the revision because I had no time for it. So thanks to EssayPro, I got a C for this paper and just wasted money for nothing.

I have no idea how EssayPro has been working for 10+ years and has such awful services. Essay Pro sports a website that is relatively well-organized with links for explanations of its services, about the company, FAQ, how to order, reviews, and a blog. Navigation is easy. But is Essay Pro legit? In preparing our review of the company, we used all of the content on the website, posted reviews, pricing, quality of customer support services, comments and feedback that some of our site users submitted, and any other information we could find on the web regarding product quality. The following is the result of all that we have found.

The company serves only students, but students at all grade levels. This means that products range from a basic high school essay all the way up to Ph.D. dissertations, and everything in between that. It also offers homework help in any subject, college admissions essays, and editing, proofreading, and re-writing services. In this respect, then, it can be considered certainly a full-service agency.

The EssayPro.com business model is not unique but is one that is used by a minority of writing services in the industry. When students decide to place an order, they complete a detailed form of the type of product or service they need, leave their email address, and wait for bids to arrive. They then have the opportunity to “interview” each candidate via a messaging platform. Once they have selected a writer and agreed upon a price for the project, the student places the fee on account with the company to be released once the task is completed to satisfaction.

So, you do not have to pay until you receive the finished essay. However, you have to create an account and perform an EssayPro login, after which you will have to put money into your account before you’re able to place an order. Once the order is approved and you received it, the money is released and given to the writer.

There is a link titled “Our Team” on the home page. This will take students to the full list of available writers, complete with photos and a brief profile. The profiles include how many pieces the writer has completed, in what subject areas s/he writes, and some customer reviews. 

No information is provided about academic background and experience. It is the responsibility of the student to ask about this during the “interview” process. And this could get a bit time-consuming for the customer.

To gauge the quality of products and writers` expertise, we have had to rely on what customers have had to say about their experiences. The reviews are mixed.

• Some state that they were disappointed in the final product and had to request several revisions. This pushed them up against deadlines they were facing for submitting their pieces to instructors.
• Some were satisfied with their products and said they would probably use the same writer in the future.
• Some expressed concerns about the quality of resources used in research, especially at the college level. They wanted more original, primary source materials, as opposed to secondary ones.

We checked several reviews on different sites such as Reddit. The EssayPro Reddit opinions were mixed, and we could not just overlook the negative ones. Some people received poorly written papers, while others complained about how the customer service doesn’t help in any way. Some other clients were charged multiple times for their orders. Therefore, there were multiple bad experiences with this platform.

Here is our conclusion in the area of quality and expertise: Customer satisfaction is wholly based upon the writer they select, and that puts a lot of onus on students who may not be the best judges of writer quality through an “interview” process. The company itself does not get involved in this selection process at all. 

While EssayPro.com is a legal and reliable service, students must understand that they have a lot of responsibility in this process.

Essay Pro prices fall within the average range, with the minimum being $11 per page. Again, the final price for an order is whatever the customer and writer agree upon.

The company accepts all major bank cards in payment, and customers should have no concerns about security. The company uses an SSL-certified third-party processor for payments – a safe method, to be sure.

There are no discounts on this business model. Again, the price is totally a result of what customers and writers agree upon.

So, don’t have any expectations to use any Essay Pro promo code, because it will not be possible. As you can expect, we were very disappointed to see this. Students who need a longer essay done for them will have to pay a higher price, and a promo code would come in handy with a discount. But considering this business system, it makes sense that no such discounts apply.

This is a bit of an issue. There are six customer support reps profiled on the EssayPro.com website. Contact information, though, is a bit obscure and will take some digging. There is no phone number or live chat feature, and urgent issues may not always be handled urgently. We would suggest that the company set up better contact methods.

In terms of being reliable, this company does deliver an ordered product, although the quality is somewhat mixed. The issues we have are the same we have with any writing service that uses this business model.

We also looked at the guarantee policy and noticed that it is not that different compared to the policies of other such sites. Refunds can be obtained, but only in certain situations. If the paper is delivered late, or if there has been no writer assigned or two payments were made, you can get a full refund. Also, if you cancel the order after the writer has been confirmed, you can still get a refund.

Another situation when you can get an EssayPro refund is when the paper you received was plagiarized. If you can prove the plagiarism, then you can get a refund.

• There is not a lot of screening for accepting writers. Writers simply register on the site, state the topic areas and types of writing/editing, etc. they do, and that’s about it. If the company thoroughly vetted writing candidates, there would not be such a variance in product quality.
• Students are often rather desperate and need immediate help. In this situation, they are not likely to take a lot of time holding discussions with bidders. They will often look at prices first and take a writer they can afford, hoping for the best.

For these two reasons alone, we would assign a rating of 3, on a scale of 1-5.

I had one very good reviewer that did exactly what I needed and the other one that did not even hit close to what I needed.

Quick, but lacked quality They got the work done quickly and I appreciate the effort, but there were typos and grammatical errors throughout the paper. I paid $90 and expected a submission ready piece. Instead, I spent an hour revising, double checking and deleting some of what had been written. Some of the information had nothing to do with my topic. I was truly disappointed with the quality. Be careful if they write for you. Make sure you read through it carefully and confirm sources.

That was the most stressful experience with writing services I had ever had! They hardly did the half of the page quantity I needed and wanted me to pay extra since the topic was too complicated (according to them). But hey, don't they charge ONLY for the page count?

They respond fast and the customer support agent is super friendly, yay for the customer support! Unfortunately, there is a huge trouble with their delivery. I received a draft and by draft I mean the work in progress file, with writer's notes, some sources (s)he used etc. Of course, it had no structure and I could barely understand what was going on in the text. Later I was notified that the writer had lost the finished file and had to do the job again. And since other order kept coming, the writer took about a week after the deadline to deliver me the proper paper.

Poor quality and too much hustle and bustle. Not recommended.

"Any topic can be handled". Not very likely! I knew that the topic of my paper was a difficult one and there was quite a little information that you could use. And when they agreed to work on it they said everything would be done on time without any troubles. Then my order was delayed. Awful service that cannot perform competitive writing with any kind of a paper. I wish I had not used them!

Probably the "best" service I know. They do not know what deadlines are! They do not know the types of papers they are working with (MLA? APA? to them they are the same). Prices are high. Awful customer support. Why would anyone use it at all?

The new iPad Pro went on sale last month and won praise from many quarters—you can read my review here . But there was a secret extra that passed reviewers by, because Apple hasn’t mentioned it, and which has now been discovered: the indicators which show when the microphone or camera are in use are now better than ever.

You’ll know those indicators: a yellow light which gleams from the display when the microphone is active, and a green one to tell you your camera is on. They’re useful as reminders and the idea is that if you see them appear when you’re not using the microphone or camera, that something’s gone wrong, perhaps meaning your device has been hacked. Now, they’ve been improved.

According to that software sleuth Guilherme Rambo, the way these lights are activated has now changed. Rambo, writing on Mastodon , says: “Fun fact about the M4 iPad Pro: it’s the first device to support and use Apple's new Secure Indicator Light (SIL) mechanism. When using the microphone or camera, the corresponding indicator dot is effectively rendered in hardware (using the display), making it a lot less likely that any malware or user space app would be able to access those sensors without the user’s knowledge.”

The key words here are “rendered in hardware,” and this is all down to the M4 processor, which is exclusive to the iPad Pro. Note that Rambo also points out that the lights are “using the display,” in other words, they’re not separate LEDs but images displayed on screen.

The M4 chip includes what’s called a secure enclave which was discovered a couple of weeks ago, but now we know that one of the purposes of the enclave is an extra level of protection for the user, so that malicious apps are unable to circumvent them, as reported in 9to5Mac : “Currently the new iPad Pro is the only device to contain this new security protocol, but it will almost certainly make its way to the iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 chip and to M4 Mac models later this year.”

Until those products appear, the iPad Pro with M4 processor has this extra level of consumer protection to itself.

To be clear, the way this is done on other Apple devices is still safe, but who doesn’t want even more peace of mind when it comes to a device’s camera and microphone use?

Columbia Law Review Refused to Take Down Article on Palestine, So Its Board of Directors Nuked the Whole Website

The students who edit the journal sought out the article by a Palestinian scholar who was censored by Harvard Law Review last year.

Last November, the Harvard Law Review made the unprecedented decision to kill a fully edited essay prior to publication. The author, human rights lawyer Rabea Eghbariah, was to be the first Palestinian legal scholar published in the prestigious journal. 

As The Intercept reported at the time, Eghbariah’s essay — an argument for establishing “Nakba,” the expulsion, dispossession, and oppression of Palestinians, as a formal legal concept that widens its scope — faced extraordinary editorial scrutiny and eventual censorship. 

When the Harvard publication spiked his article, editors from another Ivy League law school reached out to Eghbariah. Students from the Columbia Law Review solicited a new article from the scholar and, upon receiving it, decided to edit it and prepare it for publication.

Harvard Law Review Editors Vote to Kill Article About Genocide in Gaza

Now, eight months into Israel’s onslaught against Gaza, Eghbariah’s work has once again been stifled — this time by the Columbia Law Review’s board of directors, a group of law school professors and prominent alumni that oversee the students running the review. 

Eghbariah’s paper for the Columbia Law Review, or CLR, was published on its website in the early hours of Monday morning. The journal’s board of directors responded by pulling the entire website offline. The homepage on Monday morning read “Website under maintenance.” 

According to Eghbariah, he worked with editors at the Columbia Law Review for over five months on the 100-plus-page text.

“The attempts to silence legal scholarship on the Nakba by subjecting it to an unusual and discriminatory process are not only reflective of a pervasive and alarming Palestine exception to academic freedom,” Eghbariah told The Intercept, “but are also a testament to a deplorable culture of Nakba denialism.”

Website Takedown

Seven editors who had worked on the article told The Intercept that, over the weekend, members of the board of directors pressured the law review’s leadership to delay and even rescind publication. Most of the CLR editors spoke to The Intercept on the condition of anonymity, fearing the backlash that others have faced for speaking out for Palestine.

Numerous editors stressed that the editorial input had been extensive, and that the text was more widely circulated among a greater number of people than is the case prior to the publication for most CLR articles.

After a back-and-forth with the board and fellow editors, the members of CLR responsible for the Eghbariah article said they feared that the draft had been leaked and decided to preempt outside pressure by publishing the issue online in the early morning hours of June 3. After the editors declined a board of directors request to take down the articles, the board pulled the plug on the entire website.

The CLR board of directors told The Intercept in a statement that there were concerns about “deviation from the Review’s usual processes” and said it had taken the website down to give all CLR members the chance to read the article and that the decision was not a final decision on publication. 

“I don’t suspect that they would have asserted this kind of control had the piece been about Tibet, Kashmir, Puerto Rico, or other contested political sites.”

“We spoke to certain members of the student leadership to ask that they delay publication for a few days so that, at a minimum, the manuscript could be shared with all student editors, to provide them with a chance to read it and respond,” the board said. “Nevertheless, we learned this morning that the manuscript had been made public. In order to provide time for the Law Review to determine how to proceed, we have temporarily suspended its website.”

The apparent intervention by the board of directors surprised some Columbia Law School faculty. 

“I don’t suspect that they would have asserted this kind of control had the piece been about Tibet, Kashmir, Puerto Rico, or other contested political sites,” Katherine Franke, a professor, told The Intercept.

“When Columbia Law Professor Herbert Weschler published his important article questioning the underlying justification for Brown v. Board of Education in 1959 it was regarded by many as blasphemous, but is now regarded as canonical. This is what legal scholarship should do at its best, challenge us to think hard about hard things, even when it is uncomfortable doing so.” 

“Completely Unprecedented”

The article significantly expands on Eghbariah’s argument for Nakba as its own legal concept in international law. The scholarship is aimed at creating a legal framework for the Nakba similar to genocide and apartheid, which were concretized as crimes in response to specific atrocities carried out by Nazi Germany and white minority-ruled South Africa, respectively. 

“The piece fills a conspicuous gap in legal literature with doctrinal, historical, and moral clarity,” said Margaret Hassel, Columbia Law Review’s previous editor in chief until last February. “I am tremendously proud of the work, care, and thought that Eghbariah and the Review’s editors have poured into the piece.”

The Columbia Law Review is a separate nonprofit from Columbia University, but the editors are Columbia Law students and its oversight includes law school faculty. The board of directors consists of established faculty members and eminent alumni of the law school. Among the most well-known of the board members are Columbia Law School Dean Gillian Lester; Columbia law professor Gillian Metzger, who also serves in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel; and Department of Justice senior counsel Lewis Yelin.

Board interventions in editorial content are, the editors said, extremely rare. (The board of directors did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how often it gets involved in editorial processes.)

All of the law review editors who spoke to The Intercept said that Eghbariah’s text went through an extensive editorial process, with extra caution taken due to concerns over potential backlash. 

“I was just sick to my stomach and disgusted that, once again, this was happening, seven months later after Harvard had just gone through that debacle,” said Erika Lopez, a CLR editor and its diversity, equity, and inclusion chair.

Members of CLR’s production team told The Intercept that the board of directors reached out in recent days, pressuring editors to delay the publication of Eghbariah’s piece. According to the students, Metzger and former Assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General Ginger Anders, another alumnus, called Sunday requesting that the piece first be reviewed by the 100-plus members of CLR. The board members told editors they had been made aware that the paper had not gone through appropriate procedures.

The students who spoke with The Intercept said that in their time at CLR, they had never received a request from the board to distribute the text of an article to the entire membership of the review — nor had they heard of the board being aware of an article’s text before publication.

A procedure was in place, said the CLR staffers, and it was followed. 

“What we were doing had precedent in processes used in the past,” said Jamie Jenkins, a CLR editor who helped shepherd the piece toward publication. “Distributing the piece to the entirety of law review was completely unprecedented.”

No Palestinians

Lopez initially proposed soliciting a piece on Palestine in the context of human rights law in October.

“I remember searching Columbia Law Review’s website in October, and there’s only one other mention of the word Palestine in the entire online existence,” said Lopez — in a footnote from 2015. As would have been the case with the Harvard Law Review, Eghbariah is the first Palestinian scholar to publish in the Columbia Law Review. 

“Every single piece that we publish goes through an incredibly, incredibly rigorous publication process.”

A large majority of the administrative board — the student editors in charge of the publication process — took part in a vote, and voted unanimously 23-0 to create a committee for pursuing a piece on Israel–Palestine. A smaller, voluntary committee of 11 editors proceeded to select and then shepherd Eghbariah’s piece. While editors are typically selected and assigned pieces at random, the process in this case allowed for volunteer-based involvement, given the fraught nature of the subject matter. Some 30 members of the review ended up working on the piece throughout its production, editors said.

“Every single piece that we publish goes through an incredibly, incredibly rigorous publication process. We just have high publication standards,” said Jenkins, who noted the piece was given even more scrutiny because of the fraught subject matter. “So there was some additional work put into it, but in general, it was the same steps of production.”

The editors involved were concerned about leaks, they said, which could have put the editorial process at risk. Drafts of the piece were, for example, only available on a drive shared between the opt-in committee directly working on it, rather than all editors.

Once notified that the issue would be posted online, Metzger and Anders urged the students to not just delay publication, but also to send Eghbariah’s essay — though not the other six slated articles — to the rest of the law review. Editorial leadership initially heeded their demand, choosing to delay publishing of the May issue until June 7, and sending the entire masthead a draft of Eghbariah’s essay. 

Shortly thereafter, editorial leaders followed up again with the board, notifying the directors there was reason to believe the piece had indeed been leaked beyond CLR members. Editors told The Intercept that members of the law review had reached out to inform them that they had been speaking with professors and mentors about the article. Several said they had been told to resign as editors. A former member of the board of directors also reached out to a member of the production team requesting that his name be removed from the masthead.

In response to word of these leaks, the editors working on the piece decided to proceed with publication on June 3, at roughly 2:30 a.m.

Following the piece’s publication, the directors reached out to the editors again, according to a CLR editor, requesting the entire May edition to be taken down. Editorial leadership refused. Shortly thereafter, the entire CLR website was down — and remains that way as this article went to publication.

Rashid Khalidi , the celebrated Palestinian American professor of history at Columbia, who is on Eghbariah’s dissertation committee for his doctorate from Harvard Law School, said that Eghbariah “provides an entirely original and very intelligent analysis of a bunch of aspects of the legal system in Israel, which I think should be welcomed by any open-minded person in the legal profession.”

Both Eghbariah and numerous editors at the review remain committed to the importance of the legal scholarship in question. The author, who has tried landmark Palestinian civil rights cases before the Israeli Supreme Court, noted that in its current case charging Israel with genocide at the International Court of Justice, South Africa’s legal team referred to the Palestinian “ ongoing Nakba ” as the context for the current genocide case. 

“What we need to do is to acknowledge the Nakba as its own independent framework that intersects and overlaps with genocide and apartheid,” Eghbariah told The Intercept, while adding that the Nakba also “stands as a distinct framework that can be understood as its own crime with a distinctive historical analytical foundation structure and purpose.”

On Monday, Dr. Anthony Fauci returned to the halls of Congress and testified before the House subcommittee investigating the Covid-19 pandemic. He was questioned about several topics related to the government’s handling of Covid-19, including how the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which he directed until retiring in 2022, supported risky virus work at a Chinese institute whose research may have caused the pandemic.

For more than four years, reflexive partisan politics have derailed the search for the truth about a catastrophe that has touched us all. It has been estimated that at least 25 million people around the world have died because of Covid-19, with over a million of those deaths in the United States.

Although how the pandemic started has been hotly debated, a growing volume of evidence — gleaned from public records released under the Freedom of Information Act, digital sleuthing through online databases, scientific papers analyzing the virus and its spread, and leaks from within the U.S. government — suggests that the pandemic most likely occurred because a virus escaped from a research lab in Wuhan, China. If so, it would be the most costly accident in the history of science.

Here’s what we now know:

1 The SARS-like virus that caused the pandemic emerged in Wuhan, the city where the world’s foremost research lab for SARS-like viruses is located.

• At the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a team of scientists had been hunting for SARS-like viruses for over a decade, led by Shi Zhengli.
• Their research showed that the viruses most similar to SARS‑CoV‑2, the virus that caused the pandemic, circulate in bats that live r oughly 1,000 miles away from Wuhan. Scientists from Dr. Shi’s team traveled repeatedly to Yunnan province to collect these viruses and had expanded their search to Southeast Asia. Bats in other parts of China have not been found to carry viruses that are as closely related to SARS-CoV-2.

• Even at hot spots where these viruses exist naturally near the cave bats of southwestern China and Southeast Asia, the scientists argued, as recently as 2019 , that bat coronavirus spillover into humans is rare .
• When the Covid-19 outbreak was detected, Dr. Shi initially wondered if the novel coronavirus had come from her laboratory , saying she had never expected such an outbreak to occur in Wuhan.
• The SARS‑CoV‑2 virus is exceptionally contagious and can jump from species to species like wildfire . Yet it left no known trace of infection at its source or anywhere along what would have been a thousand-mile journey before emerging in Wuhan.

2 The year before the outbreak, the Wuhan institute, working with U.S. partners, had proposed creating viruses with SARS‑CoV‑2’s defining feature.

• Dr. Shi’s group was fascinated by how coronaviruses jump from species to species. To find viruses, they took samples from bats and other animals , as well as from sick people living near animals carrying these viruses or associated with the wildlife trade. Much of this work was conducted in partnership with the EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based scientific organization that, since 2002, has been awarded over $80 million in federal funding to research the risks of emerging infectious diseases.
• The laboratory pursued risky research that resulted in viruses becoming more infectious : Coronaviruses were grown from samples from infected animals and genetically reconstructed and recombined to create new viruses unknown in nature. These new viruses were passed through cells from bats, pigs, primates and humans and were used to infect civets and humanized mice (mice modified with human genes). In essence, this process forced these viruses to adapt to new host species, and the viruses with mutations that allowed them to thrive emerged as victors.
• By 2019, Dr. Shi’s group had published a database describing more than 22,000 collected wildlife samples. But external access was shut off in the fall of 2019, and the database was not shared with American collaborators even after the pandemic started , when such a rich virus collection would have been most useful in tracking the origin of SARS‑CoV‑2. It remains unclear whether the Wuhan institute possessed a precursor of the pandemic virus.
• In 2021, The Intercept published a leaked 2018 grant proposal for a research project named Defuse , which had been written as a collaboration between EcoHealth, the Wuhan institute and Ralph Baric at the University of North Carolina, who had been on the cutting edge of coronavirus research for years. The proposal described plans to create viruses strikingly similar to SARS‑CoV‑2.
• Coronaviruses bear their name because their surface is studded with protein spikes, like a spiky crown, which they use to enter animal cells. T he Defuse project proposed to search for and create SARS-like viruses carrying spikes with a unique feature: a furin cleavage site — the same feature that enhances SARS‑CoV‑2’s infectiousness in humans, making it capable of causing a pandemic. Defuse was never funded by the United States . However, in his testimony on Monday, Dr. Fauci explained that the Wuhan institute would not need to rely on U.S. funding to pursue research independently.

• While it’s possible that the furin cleavage site could have evolved naturally (as seen in some distantly related coronaviruses), out of the hundreds of SARS-like viruses cataloged by scientists, SARS‑CoV‑2 is the only one known to possess a furin cleavage site in its spike. And the genetic data suggest that the virus had only recently gained the furin cleavage site before it started the pandemic.
• Ultimately, a never-before-seen SARS-like virus with a newly introduced furin cleavage site, matching the description in the Wuhan institute’s Defuse proposal, caused an outbreak in Wuhan less than two years after the proposal was drafted.
• When the Wuhan scientists published their seminal paper about Covid-19 as the pandemic roared to life in 2020, they did not mention the virus’s furin cleavage site — a feature they should have been on the lookout for, according to their own grant proposal, and a feature quickly recognized by other scientists.
• Worse still, as the pandemic raged, their American collaborators failed to publicly reveal the existence of the Defuse proposal. The president of EcoHealth, Peter Daszak, recently admitted to Congress that he doesn’t know about virus samples collected by the Wuhan institute after 2015 and never asked the lab’s scientists if they had started the work described in Defuse. In May, citing failures in EcoHealth’s monitoring of risky experiments conducted at the Wuhan lab, the Biden administration suspended all federal funding for the organization and Dr. Daszak, and initiated proceedings to bar them from receiving future grants. In his testimony on Monday, Dr. Fauci said that he supported the decision to suspend and bar EcoHealth.
• Separately, Dr. Baric described the competitive dynamic between his research group and the institute when he told Congress that the Wuhan scientists would probably not have shared their most interesting newly discovered viruses with him . Documents and email correspondence between the institute and Dr. Baric are still being withheld from the public while their release is fiercely contested in litigation.
• In the end, American partners very likely knew of only a fraction of the research done in Wuhan. According to U.S. intelligence sources, some of the institute’s virus research was classified or conducted with or on behalf of the Chinese military . In the congressional hearing on Monday, Dr. Fauci repeatedly acknowledged the lack of visibility into experiments conducted at the Wuhan institute, saying, “None of us can know everything that’s going on in China, or in Wuhan, or what have you. And that’s the reason why — I say today, and I’ve said at the T.I.,” referring to his transcribed interview with the subcommittee, “I keep an open mind as to what the origin is.”

• Labs working with live viruses generally operate at one of four biosafety levels (known in ascending order of stringency as BSL-1, 2, 3 and 4) that describe the work practices that are considered sufficiently safe depending on the characteristics of each pathogen. The Wuhan institute’s scientists worked with SARS-like viruses under inappropriately low biosafety conditions .

• In one experiment, Dr. Shi’s group genetically engineered an unexpectedly deadly SARS-like virus (not closely related to SARS‑CoV‑2) that exhibited a 10,000-fold increase in the quantity of virus in the lungs and brains of humanized mice . Wuhan institute scientists handled these live viruses at low biosafet y levels , including BSL-2.
• Even the much more stringent containment at BSL-3 cannot fully prevent SARS‑CoV‑2 from escaping . Two years into the pandemic, the virus infected a scientist in a BSL-3 laboratory in Taiwan, which was, at the time, a zero-Covid country. The scientist had been vaccinated and was tested only after losing the sense of smell. By then, more than 100 close contacts had been exposed. Human error is a source of exposure even at the highest biosafety levels , and the risks are much greater for scientists working with infectious pathogens at low biosafety.
• An early draft of the Defuse proposal stated that the Wuhan lab would do their virus work at BSL-2 to make it “highly cost-effective.” Dr. Baric added a note to the draft highlighting the importance of using BSL-3 to contain SARS-like viruses that could infect human cells, writing that “U.S. researchers will likely freak out.” Years later, after SARS‑CoV‑2 had killed millions, Dr. Baric wrote to Dr. Daszak : “I have no doubt that they followed state determined rules and did the work under BSL-2. Yes China has the right to set their own policy. You believe this was appropriate containment if you want but don’t expect me to believe it. Moreover, don’t insult my intelligence by trying to feed me this load of BS.”
• SARS‑CoV‑2 is a stealthy virus that transmits effectively through the air, causes a range of symptoms similar to those of other common respiratory diseases and can be spread by infected people before symptoms even appear. If the virus had escaped from a BSL-2 laboratory in 2019, the leak most likely would have gone undetected until too late.
• One alarming detail — leaked to The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by current and former U.S. government officials — is that scientists on Dr. Shi’s team fell ill with Covid-like symptoms in the fall of 2019 . One of the scientists had been named in the Defuse proposal as the person in charge of virus discovery work. The scientists denied having been sick .

• In December 2019, Chinese investigators assumed the outbreak had started at a centrally located market frequented by thousands of visitors daily. This bias in their search for early cases meant that cases unlinked to or located far away from the market would very likely have been missed. To make things worse, the Chinese authorities blocked the reporting of early cases not linked to the market and, claiming biosafety precautions, ordered the destruction of patient samples on January 3, 2020, making it nearly impossible to see the complete picture of the earliest Covid-19 cases. Information about dozens of early cases from November and December 2019 remains inaccessible.
• A pair of papers published in Science in 2022 made the best case for SARS‑CoV‑2 having emerged naturally from human-animal contact at the Wuhan market by focusing on a map of the early cases and asserting that the virus had jumped from animals into humans twice at the market in 2019. More recently, the two papers have been countered by other virologists and scientists who convincingly demonstrate that the available market evidence does not distinguish between a human superspreader event and a natural spillover at the market.
• Furthermore, the existing genetic and early case data show that all known Covid-19 cases probably stem from a single introduction of SARS‑CoV‑2 into people, and the outbreak at the Wuhan market probably happened after the virus had already been circulating in humans.

The viruses that infected people linked to the market were most likely not the earliest form of the virus that started the pandemic.

• Not a single infected animal has ever been confirmed at the market or in its supply chain. Without good evidence that the pandemic started at the Huanan Seafood Market, the fact that the virus emerged in Wuhan points squarely at its unique SARS-like virus laboratory.

• Despite the intense search trained on the animal trade and people linked to the market, investigators have not reported finding any animals infected with SARS‑CoV‑2 that had not been infected by humans. Yet, infected animal sources and other connective pieces of evidence were found for the earlier SARS and MERS outbreaks as quickly as within a few days, despite the less advanced viral forensic technologies of two decades ago.
• Even though Wuhan is the home base of virus hunters with world-leading expertise in tracking novel SARS-like viruses, investigators have either failed to collect or report key evidence that would be expected if Covid-19 emerged from the wildlife trade . For example, investigators have not determined that the earliest known cases had exposure to intermediate host animals before falling ill. No antibody evidence shows that animal traders in Wuhan are regularly exposed to SARS-like viruses, as would be expected in such situations.
• With today’s technology, scientists can detect how respiratory viruses — including SARS, MERS and the flu — circulate in animals while making repeated attempts to jump across species . Thankfully, these variants usually fail to transmit well after crossing over to a new species and tend to die off after a small number of infections. In contrast, virologists and other scientists agree that SARS‑CoV‑2 required little to no adaptation to spread rapidly in humans and other animals . The virus appears to have succeeded in causing a pandemic upon its only detected jump into humans.

The pandemic could have been caused by any of hundreds of virus species, at any of tens of thousands of wildlife markets, in any of thousands of cities, and in any year. But it was a SARS-like coronavirus with a unique furin cleavage site that emerged in Wuhan, less than two years after scientists, sometimes working under inadequate biosafety conditions, proposed collecting and creating viruses of that same design.

While several natural spillover scenarios remain plausible, and we still don’t know enough about the full extent of virus research conducted at the Wuhan institute by Dr. Shi’s team and other researchers, a laboratory accident is the most parsimonious explanation of how the pandemic began.

Given what we now know, investigators should follow their strongest leads and subpoena all exchanges between the Wuhan scientists and their international partners, including unpublished research proposals, manuscripts, data and commercial orders. In particular, exchanges from 2018 and 2019 — the critical two years before the emergence of Covid-19 — are very likely to be illuminating (and require no cooperation from the Chinese government to acquire), yet they remain beyond the public’s view more than four years after the pandemic began.

Whether the pandemic started on a lab bench or in a market stall, it is undeniable that U.S. federal funding helped to build an unprecedented collection of SARS-like viruses at the Wuhan institute, as well as contributing to research that enhanced them . Advocates and funders of the institute’s research, including Dr. Fauci, should cooperate with the investigation to help identify and close the loopholes that allowed such dangerous work to occur. The world must not continue to bear the intolerable risks of research with the potential to cause pandemics .

A successful investigation of the pandemic’s root cause would have the power to break a decades-long scientific impasse on pathogen research safety, determining how governments will spend billions of dollars to prevent future pandemics. A credible investigation would also deter future acts of negligence and deceit by demonstrating that it is indeed possible to be held accountable for causing a viral pandemic. Last but not least, people of all nations need to see their leaders — and especially, their scientists — heading the charge to find out what caused this world-shaking event. Restoring public trust in science and government leadership requires it.

A thorough investigation by the U.S. government could unearth more evidence while spurring whistleblowers to find their courage and seek their moment of opportunity. It would also show the world that U.S. leaders and scientists are not afraid of what the truth behind the pandemic may be.

A charming look at a reader’s many moods

Elisa Gabbert’s essays in “Any Person Is the Only Self” are brimming with pleasure and curiosity about a life with books.

Tell people you read and write for a living, and they picture a ghostly creature, an idea only incidentally appended to a body. What they often fail to understand is that the life of the mind is also a physical life — a life spent lugging irksomely heavy volumes around on the Metro and annotating their margins with a cramping hand. The poet, essayist and New York Times poetry columnist Elisa Gabbert is rare in grasping that reading is, in addition to a mental exercise, a movement performed in a particular place.

“If I remember anything about a book, I also remember where I read it — what room, what chair,” she writes in her charming new essay collection, “ Any Person Is the Only Self .” Writing, too, proves spatial: “I think essays, like buildings, need structure and mood. The first paragraph should function as a foyer or an antechamber, bringing you into the mood.”

The 16 delightfully digressive pieces in this collection are all moods that involve books in one way or another. But they are not just about the content of books, although they are about that, too: They are primarily about the acts of reading and writing, which are as much social and corporeal as cerebral.

In the first essay — the foyer — Gabbert writes about the shelf of newly returned books at her local library. “The books on that shelf weren’t being marketed to me,” she writes. “They weren’t omnipresent in my social media feeds. They were very often old and very often ugly. I came to think of that shelf as an escape from hype.” The haphazard selections on the shelf were also evidence of other people — the sort of invisible but palpable community of readers that she came to miss so sharply during the pandemic.

In another essay, she learns of a previously unpublished story by one of her favorite authors, Sylvia Plath, who makes frequent appearances throughout this book. Fearing that the story will disappoint her, Gabbert puts off reading it. As she waits, she grows “apprehensive, even frightened.”

There are writers who attempt to excise themselves from their writing, to foster an illusion of objectivity; thankfully, Gabbert is not one of them. On the contrary, her writing is full of intimacies, and her book is a work of embodied and experiential criticism, a record of its author’s shifting relationships with the literature that defines her life. In one piece, she rereads and reappraises books she first read as a teenager; in another, she and her friends form a “Stupid Classics Book Club,” to tackle “all the corny stuff from the canon that we really should have read in school but never had.”

Gabbert is a master of mood, not polemic, and accordingly, her writing is not didactic; her essays revolve around images and recollections rather than arguments. In place of the analytic pleasures of a robustly defended thesis, we find the fresh thrills of a poet’s perfected phrases and startling observations. “Parties are about the collective gaze, the ability to be seen from all angles, panoramically,” she writes in an essay about fictional depictions of parties. She describes the photos in a book by Rachael Ray documenting home-cooked meals — one of the volumes on the recently returned shelf — as “poignantly mediocre.” Remarking on a listicle of “Books to Read by Living Women (Instead of These 10 by Dead Men),” Gabbert wonders, “Since when is it poor form to die?”

“Any Person Is the Only Self” is both funny and serious, a winning melee of high and low cultural references, as packed with unexpected treasures as a crowded antique shop. An academic text on architecture, the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, a rare memory disorder whose victims recall every aspect of their autobiographies in excruciatingly minute detail, “Madame Bovary,” YouTube videos about people who work as professional cuddlers, a psychological study about whether it is possible to be sane in an insane asylum — all these feature in Gabbert’s exuberant essays. She is a fiercely democratic thinker, incapable of snobbery and brimming with curiosity.

Perhaps because she is so indefatigably interested, she gravitates toward writers who see literature as a means of doubling life, allowing it to hold twice as much. Plath confessed in her journals that she wrote in an attempt to extend her biography beyond its biological terminus: “My life, I feel, will not be lived until there are books and stories which relive it perpetually in time.” The very act of keeping a diary, then, splits the self in two.

Plath once insisted that bad things could never happen to her and her peers because “we’re different.” Gabbert asks “Different why?” and concludes that everyone is different: “We are we , not them. Any person is the only self.” But that “only” is, perhaps counterintuitively, not constrained or constricted. Walt Whitman famously wrote that his only self comprised “multitudes,” and Gabbert echoes him when she reflects, “If there is no one self, you can never be yourself, only one of your selves.” And indeed, she is loath to elevate any of her many selves over any of the others. When she rereads a book that she loved in her adolescence, she thinks she was right to love it back then. “That self only knew what she knew,” she writes. “That self wasn’t wrong .” Both her past self and her present self have an equal claim to being Elisa Gabbert, who is too fascinated by the world’s manifold riches to confine herself to a single, limited life.

Review: Poco F6 and F6 Pro

With so many excellent midrange smartphones available now, how do you choose? Every year, Xiaomi’s Poco range pushes hardware expectations, and the Poco F6 and F6 Pro are no exception. The Poco F6 Pro (£499) struggles to justify the Pro tag, but the cheaper Poco F6 (£399) is an absolute bargain (even more so if you bagged the early-bird price of £339). You will struggle to find this processing power or display quality elsewhere without paying more.

Xiaomi routinely rebadges affordable phones released in China under its Redmi brand as Poco phones for Europe and the rest of the world, though they are not sold in the United States. Poco quickly built a reputation for value, and the F6 is a strong example of why. It ticks all the boxes with a gorgeous display, zippy performance, capable camera, and fast charging, though the software and battery life let it down some.

The Poco F6 could be the perfect phone for gamers on a budget this year and is almost compromise-free. The Pro is not worth the extra cash, so I’ll focus on the Poco F6 in this review, but I will drill deeper into the differences below.

Identity Crisis

The design is perhaps the least interesting thing about these phones, but it is also the most obvious difference. The Poco F6 is all-plastic, with a flat frame, a gently curved shimmery back that doesn’t show finger smudges, and two huge camera lenses at the top left flanked by a smaller flash. My review unit is a handsome green, but it also comes in black or a beige gold that Xiaomi calls titanium.

The F6 Pro has an aluminum frame and a glass back with a marble effect finish. My review unit is black, but you can also opt for white. The camera module is far bigger, spanning almost the whole top of the F6 Pro, with three medium-sized lenses and a flash in a symmetrical grid of four. The F6 Pro is a touch thicker and heavier than its sibling, and you can tell it is the more expensive of the two, though I preferred the F6. The Poco branding is mercifully subtle. That said, neither design is very exciting.

Both phones have a fingerprint sensor under the screen, and it worked fine for me, usually unlocking the first time. But it is weirdly low compared with other phones, so I kept having to adjust the position of my thumb. Strangely, the F6 has a superior IP64 rating for water resistance and Gorilla Glass Victus to protect the screen, while the F6 Pro is IP54 and has the older Gorilla Glass 5.

These phones are almost identically sized, both boasting a 6.67-inch AMOLED with a 120-Hz refresh rate , though you must activate it in the display settings. The distinction is the resolution, with the F6 Pro at 3,200 x 1,440 pixels and the F6 at 2,712 x 1,220 pixels, and the F6 Pro is supposed to get a bit brighter. Even side-by-side, I couldn’t see much of a difference. Both screens are sharp and bright enough to see outdoors. These are solid phones for movie watching (if you must watch movies on your phone) with stereo speakers and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

Gaming is where it’s really at with the F6 and F6 Pro. With a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, the Poco F6 is quite simply the fastest phone in its price bracket. Whether you’re tearing around the track in Asphalt 9: Legends or slaying baddies in Genshin Impact, the Poco F6 lets you crank the settings up and enjoy smooth gameplay.

While the Poco F6 got warm after a long gaming session, that’s not unusual. But I was a little disappointed by the battery life. Both phones pack a 5,000-mAh battery, which sounds like plenty, but with a lot of gaming or photography, you may have to reach for that charger before bedtime. The F6 comes with a 90-watt charger and USB-C cable and takes around 40 minutes to fully charge. The F6 Pro shaves a few minutes off with a 120-watt charger, but it’s a minor difference. It’s a shame there’s no wireless charging, but that’s still rare in this price bracket.

The entry-level Poco F6 has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. I tested a step-up model with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage (£449). It never felt less than snappy. The Poco F6 Pro comes with 12 GB of RAM as standard and a choice of 256 or 512 GB of storage. There is also a 16-GB and 1-TB Pro model (£599), but only in some markets.

The Poco tagline is “Everything You Need, Nothing You Don't,” but these phones are packed with bloatware. Google apps are tucked away in a folder, with Xiaomi’s Mi apps front and center, and you get a further two folders packed with crappy apps and games. It’s easy to sort out, but I wish the phones came without them.

What’s harder to change is Xiaomi’s HyperOS. This user interface replaces MIUI, and it’s a slight improvement, but it still feels and looks more like Apple’s iOS than Android. Having used Xiaomi phones for a while now, I’m used to it, but I still hate the indecipherable quick settings icons and having to swipe down on the left for notifications or the right for settings. Xiaomi promises a fairly average three Android upgrades and four years of security patches for these phones.

Capable Camera

You can’t expect a top-tier camera in a phone at this price, but I appreciate the approach Xiaomi has taken with the Poco F6. The main shooter, which you will use most of the time, is a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 that captures good photos in various settings. Landscape shots, portraits, and close-ups are decent, provided there is light, but it struggles in the dark or with moving subjects. It is backed up by an 8-megapixel ultrawide and a 20-megapixel front-facing camera, though neither is very good.

The Pro adds a largely useless 2-megapixel macro camera, but the main camera has a larger sensor to make the most of limited light. It also has a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. Photos are slightly sharper on the Pro, but colors are closer to reality on the F6. Both can capture decent 4K video, though only the Pro offers 24 frames per second for that cinematic feel.

While these phones are better across the board than last year’s Poco F5 and F5 Pro ( 6/10, WIRED Review ), and the mid-year refresh Poco X6 and X6 Pro ( 7/10, WIRED Review ), the cheaper F6 has lost one thing: the headphone port. Despite that loss, the Poco F6 is the clear pick this year and the most improved sibling. I don’t think the Pro does enough to justify the extra cost.
