1.1 Defining Politics: Who Gets What, When, Where, How, and Why?

Politics has existed as long as humans have faced scarcity, have had different beliefs and preferences, and have had to resolve these differences while allocating scarce resources. It will continue to exist so long as these human conditions persist—that is, forever. Politics are fundamental to the human condition.

Politics means different things to different people. Politics , and related terms like political and politician , can have both positive and negative connotations. The Greek philosopher Aristotle argued that humans were “political animals” in that only by engaging in politics could humans reach their highest potential. 5 Yet often, the terms political and politician can be used in disparaging ways to refer to individuals using trickery or manipulation to obtain or preserve their status or authority. More formally, a politician is someone running for elective office or serving in it or as a person who is using the skills of a politician in other social interaction. A political actor is anyone who is engaged in political activity. Politics involves all the actions of government and all the people who work for, serve, or challenge it.

This book takes the broadest view, adopting the guidance of political scientist Harold Lasswell , who defined politics as “who gets what, when, how.” 6 Politics exists wherever people interact with one another to make decisions that affect them collectively. Politics exists within families. When parents decide where the family will live: politics. The family (who) gets a place to live (what) at the point of decision (when) based on the parents’ choice (how). When your school decides what tuition to charge: politics. When the government imposes taxes or funds education: politics. Most generally, politics is any interaction among individuals, groups, or institutions that seek to arrive at a decision about how to make a collective choice, or to solve some collective problem. Every political event is different. The mass protests in Hong Kong in 2020, inspired by those seeking to protect their political rights, were not exactly the same as the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States or the climate change actions animated by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg . Yet as varied as political situations can be, there are commonalities across these events and over all political activities. Whenever you seek to understand a political event—whether an election in Tanzania, a protest in Estonia, or a public health program in Indonesia—it is useful to focus on the following:

What are the most important rules ? What is the reality of the existing event or environment? What choices do the participants make? Political outcomes—for example, which candidate wins an election—are based on the interaction of these rules, realities, and choices.

The importance of rules in politics or in life cannot be overstated. In virtually every human endeavor, the most successful individuals are likely to have a keen knowledge of the rules and how to use (or break) the rules to the advantage of their cause. Ignorance of the rules makes accomplishing your goals more difficult.

Rules can be highly precise or open to interpretation. In chess, for example, the rules are completely known to all players: each piece can move in certain directions but in no other ones. Each player takes a turn; that’s the rule. Although chess is highly complex, each player’s options at any given time are known. Chess champions—in fact, all champions—know how to use the rules to their advantage.

College campuses have their own sets of formal and informal rules, and not all of them are as precise as those in chess. The de jure rules are the rules as they are written, the formal rules. The de facto rules are the ones actually practiced or enforced, the informal rules. For example: a sign might state that the ( de jure ) speed limit is 55 miles per hour, but if police do not give tickets to drivers unless they are driving 65 miles per hour, then that is the de facto rule. To thrive at college, it is useful to understand not only the formal rules but also the informal rules, which have been called “the hidden curriculum.” 8

The rules in any political environment affect who has power and how they can use it. Consider the rules that determine who can vote and how. These rules can be permissive or strict, making voting either easier or harder to do. The harder it is to vote, the fewer people will actually cast their ballots and vice versa. Voting rules influence who shows up to vote. Politicians who believe they have a better chance of success under permissive voting rules are likely to advocate for such rules, while politicians who believe they are more likely to prevail under restrictive voting rules will advocate for them instead.

Rules might appear to be neutral—that is, they may seem fair and not designed to favor one group over another—but this is not entirely true. Until recently, to become a pilot in the US Air Force, a person had to be no shorter than 5 feet 4 inches and no taller than 6 feet 5 inches: the short and the tall were excluded from this opportunity. The rule might be in place for a good reason—in this case, to ensure that pilots can fit properly into their seats—but rules like these allocate opportunities and resources to some while withholding them from others. Because this rule excluded over 40 percent of American women from becoming pilots, it has been modified. 9

Rules are everywhere in politics. Your family has rules—even if the main rule is “no rules”—as does your school. Rules, such as Robert’s Rules of Order , 10 govern legislatures, and the criminal justice system, the tax system, and the national immigration systems are all based, at least in principle, on rules.

Rules and institutions are closely related. The institution of marriage or the institution of the family, for example, are the sets of rules (rights, roles, and responsibilities) by which those within the marriage or family live. Alternatively, institutions can be organizations, which are groups of people working together for a common purpose whose actions are governed by rules.

Perhaps the most important set of rules for any institution or organization is its constitution . The constitution affirms the most basic legal principles of a country or a state. These principles typically include the structure of the government, its duties, and the rights of the people. Constitutions can be quite general or extremely detailed. The Constitution of Monaco has fewer than 4,000 words, while the Constitution of India has nearly 150,000 words. 11 Unlike the United States, some countries, including Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, do not have a single document they call the constitution but instead rely on other written and even unwritten sources. In most countries the constitution is called just that—the constitution—although Germany, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and a few other countries call their constitutions the basic law. 12

What Is a Constitution?

Constitutions define the relationship between people and their government. They give powers to and place limits upon the government and serve as the basis for any other laws or government activities.

Constitutions are perhaps the most important set of rules in a country because, after all, they are just pieces of paper. The true importance of a country’s constitution depends on the politics of that country. In the United States, the Constitution is venerated almost as if it were a religious document. Most of the biggest conflicts throughout US history have involved disputes over what the Constitution requires, allows, or prohibits. When the US Supreme Court rules that a political action is unconstitutional, the violator—whether it be the president, the Congress, or any other group or individual in society—is expected to comply with the ruling and stop the action. 13 But this is not always the case everywhere. Politicians in any country may be tempted to ignore their constitutions, especially when it comes to the rights they ostensibly guarantee, and whether those politicians prevail depends on whether other political actors are willing and able to uphold the constitution.

Because rules affect the allocation of power and other scarce resources, political actors spend substantial time and effort fighting over them. In general, political actors seek to establish rules that benefit them and their allies.

Rules guide and constrain behavior, but the reality on the ground at any specific time also impacts political outcomes. Reality —facts—is not a matter of opinion, although people can dispute the nature of reality. Something is a fact , for example, when there is compelling evidence that an event has happened or a condition exists. The sun rises in the East: reality. The United Nations is an international organization: fact (reality). 14 Has the United Nations made the world a better place? That is a matter of opinion, although those who say “yes” or “no” can provide facts that support their views about reality. 15

How candidates can raise and spend money on their electoral campaigns may be limited by campaign finance laws, but if one candidate raises twice as much money as the other candidate, that is an important fact. If one candidate is the incumbent —a politician already serving in office and running for reelection—and the other is not, that is an important fact. These are important facts because whether or not a candidate is an incumbent and how much campaign money they raise may affect their chances of winning the election. In US elections, for example, incumbents generally have a better chance of being elected (although the strength of this relationship has varied over time), while the impact of fundraising on electoral success is open to question. 16

In chess, the rules are constant, never changing during the game. The reality changes as play proceeds—at any moment each player has a specific number of pieces in particular places on the board. What happens then depends on the choices the players make. This is as true for politics as for any other game. A key difference between chess and politics is that, in politics, the players themselves can change the rules of the game while they are playing.

Politics can be thought of as having the characteristics of a game. The players—anyone involved in political action—make strategic choices, given the rules and the current conditions, in an attempt to “win” the game by obtaining their goals.

Rules provide constraints and opportunities. Reality presents resources and challenges. The choices participants make in the face of rules and reality determine political outcomes. Choice exists whenever political actors face options, which they always do. If there are two candidates in an election for a single position, the voter has to choose between them, not being able to vote for both. Even if there is only one candidate, the voter still has an option: to vote for the candidate or to abstain.

In a democracy , the winning candidate wins because more voters chose to vote, and vote for that candidate, than for other options. The very definition of democracy is that it is a form of government in which the people have the ability to choose their leaders or, in some cases, the policies that they will adopt. 17

Political outcomes are always contingent; they cannot be predicted with certainty in advance. That does not mean, however, that outcomes are completely unpredictable. By accounting for the rules, how human behavior works, and existing realities, it is possible to reasonably predict what is likely to happen and explain what does happen.

political science , the systematic study of governance by the application of empirical and generally scientific methods of analysis. As traditionally defined and studied, political science examines the state and its organs and institutions. The contemporary discipline , however, is considerably broader than this, encompassing studies of all the societal, cultural, and psychological factors that mutually influence the operation of government and the body politic .

Although political science borrows heavily from the other social sciences , it is distinguished from them by its focus on power —defined as the ability of one political actor to get another actor to do what it wants—at the international, national, and local levels. Political science is generally used in the singular, but in French and Spanish the plural ( sciences politiques and ciencias políticas , respectively) is used, perhaps a reflection of the discipline’s eclectic nature. Although political science overlaps considerably with political philosophy , the two fields are distinct. Political philosophy is concerned primarily with political ideas and values, such as rights, justice , freedom, and political obligation (whether people should or should not obey political authority); it is normative in its approach (i.e., it is concerned with what ought to be rather than with what is) and rationalistic in its method. In contrast, political science studies institutions and behaviour, favours the descriptive over the normative, and develops theories or draws conclusions based on empirical observations, which are expressed in quantitative terms where possible.

Although political science, like all modern sciences, involves empirical investigation, it generally does not produce precise measurements and predictions. This has led some scholars to question whether the discipline can be accurately described as a science. However, if the term science applies to any body of systematically organized knowledge based on facts ascertained by empirical methods and described by as much measurement as the material allows, then political science is a science, like the other social disciplines . In the 1960s the American historian of science Thomas S. Kuhn argued that political science was “pre-paradigmatic,” not yet having developed basic research paradigms , such as the periodic table that defines chemistry . It is likely that political science never will develop a single, universal paradigm or theory, and attempts to do so have seldom lasted more than a generation, making political science a discipline of many trends but few classics.

Modern university departments of political science (alternatively called government or politics at some institutions) are often divided into several fields, each of which contains various subfields.

• Domestic politics is generally the most common field of study; its subfields include public opinion , elections , national government , and state, local, or regional government.
• Comparative politics focuses on politics within countries (often grouped into world regions) and analyzes similarities and differences between countries.
• International relations considers the political relationships and interactions between countries, including the causes of war , the formation of foreign policy , international political economy , and the structures that increase or decrease the policy options available to governments. International relations is organized as a separate department in some universities.
• Political theory includes classical political philosophy and contemporary theoretical perspectives (e.g., constructivism, critical theory, and postmodernism).
• Public administration studies the role of the bureaucracy . It is the field most oriented toward practical applications within political science and is often organized as a separate department that prepares students for careers in the civil service .
• Public law studies constitutions , legal systems, civil rights , and criminal justice (now increasingly its own discipline).
• Public policy examines the passage and implementation of all types of government policies, particularly those related to civil rights, defense, health, education , economic growth , urban renewal , regional development, and environmental protection.

What is Political Science ?

Political Science scholars are primarily interested in understanding the role of power, material and other interests and political institutions in society.

• Why do we have certain political institutions  – say a bicameral legislature – and not others? What impact do they have on our politics and policy?
• What political factors explain the variations in levels of economic development within our country?
• How does the media affect politics?
• Why are we so far from achieving proportionate representation that gives voice to women, people of color?
• Should religion be taught in schools?
• Are presidential or parliamentary systems better in efficient policymaking? Is efficiency important or is equity?
• Why is it easier to change policies in some issue areas and not in others?

Political science is an exciting and complex field of study, focused on examining how power is distributed within societies, both domestically and internationally. It takes a deep dive into how political systems (governments) operate and impact society at large and provides analytical tools to anticipate the outcomes of various types of government policy. Political scientists study history and culture to gain a deeper understanding of politics, economics, law, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. From this interdisciplinary approach, they develop knowledge and theories to explain current global issues such as migration, poverty alleviation, and resource scarcity.

Policy Analyst

A policy analyst researches and analyzes public policies, legislation, and procedures to understand their impact on organizations, industries, communities, and individuals. They use their expertise in economics, political science, international relations, law, or other related fields to understand the implications of policy decisions. Policy analysts specialize in examining data and making recommendations for changes to existing policies or the implementation of new ones based on their research. They use a variety of tools including analytics software and databases to synthesize their findings before creating presentations that summarize their conclusions for stakeholders. Policy analysts may focus on a particular field, such as healthcare, education, national security, or the economy. As policy analysts work towards finding the best strategies, they must stay informed of current events and consider the potential effects their conclusions may have on people, businesses, and communities.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not classify policy analysts as a separate occupation from political scientists, who they estimate to make a median salary of $122,510 per year. However, according to GlassDoor.com , policy analysts make an average base salary of $69,689, with PayScale providing an even more conservative estimate of $62,689 per year.

Market Research Analyst

A market research analyst plays a vital role in the success of a business by evaluating the demand and overall effectiveness of products, services, and strategies. They assess market conditions to pinpoint trends and estimate sales opportunities more accurately. To do this, a market research analyst studies demographics and gathers data from customer surveys, interviews, or focus groups. They then assemble this data into reports that show which products and services are performing well or need improvement. Finally, they provide insights for business decisions based on their findings. If you’re looking for a career where you can shape the trajectory of businesses with sound research and analysis skills, being a market research analyst may be the ideal fit for you.

According to the BLS , market research analysts earn a median salary of $63,920 as of 2021, with a projected job outlook of 19%, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Public Relations Specialist

Public relations specialists help create and maintain a positive image for their company or client. They are responsible for creating goodwill that attracts interest in their organization or clients and helps maintain their reputation. A public relations specialist’s job is to help convey stories about the company or organization’s mission, services, products, and more through different communication platforms. Public relations specialists may create press releases, pitch articles to media outlets, manage media interviews, research trending topics that could be relevant to their clients, update websites and social media channels with relevant stories, work with external influencers and advocates to promote the company’s brand story on a larger scale, build relationships with local and national stakeholders – the list goes on. These activities are bundled into one uniquely impressive job: creating positive interactions between companies or organizations and their target audiences.

The BLS estimates a median annual salary of $62,800 for public relations specialists, with an 8% projected job growth (faster than average).

Campaign Staffer

A campaign staffer is an individual who works with a political campaign, usually for a specific candidate. Their job is to ensure that all aspects of the campaign run smoothly throughout the entire process, which can start months to years in advance. They may be responsible for any number of tasks, including:

• Recruitment
• Media outreach
• Policy research
• Researching opponents or policies
• Fundraising
• Setting up events or rallies
• Talking to potential voters
• Operational support

Campaign staffers can have many different roles which require an assortment of skills: communication prowess, problem-solving ability, administrative efficacy, and an ability to thrive under pressure. In short, they are critical players in ensuring a campaign runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. It’s also essential to remain adaptive and flexible as the political landscape changes quickly due to external events or shifts in polling numbers. Political scientists face increasing demands to demonstrate the relevance of their research beyond the academy (the so-called ‘impact agenda’).  Matthew Flinders argues that this should be seen less a threat to the discipline’s autonomy than an opportunity to rise to public responsibilities that have always accompanied a political science career.

The ‘ noble science of politics ’ has changed a great deal through the 20th and 21st centuries. It has also rather (in)famously been ‘ a discipline divided ’, with tensions between warring factions and sub-fields too often dominating discussions, to the detriment of complementarity and pluralism. The ‘tragedy of political science’ is that it has spent too much time and energy fighting internal schisms and too little nurturing its position within the broader social context.

This assertion might be challenged by some as a generalisation, yet the lively debates in the past two decades, prompted by books on the relevance of political science and making political science matter , suggest that the problem still persists.

We are still waiting for ‘punk political science’ to explode onto the scene

The ‘ raucous rebellion ’ in political science occasioned by the Perestroikan movement never actually seemed that raucous, and appeared more concerned with increasing methodological pluralism within the discipline than forging a new political science for the twenty-first century . We are still waiting for ‘ punk political science ’ to explode onto the scene.

Managing the expectations gap

The future of political science is arguably subject to an increasing ‘ expectations gap ’ between what political scientists are expected to deliver and what they can realistically supply given the resources at their disposal. Managing this ‘gap’ is the most pressing concern facing political science; and a central element of this concern is the emergence of an ‘ impact agenda ’ whereby scholars are increasingly expected to demonstrate the social value, policy relevance and practical significance of their research. With the UK and Australia as early adopters, the emergence of an impact agenda in higher education is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon .

Put simply, the impact agenda raises fundamental questions about the public responsibility of political scientists as intellectuals which go far beyond the moral foundation of public engagement and beyond even ‘ a political science of the public sphere ’. They are questions, moreover, that have received little attention.

Following the flock?

One exception is Richard Watermeyer’s work on Competitive Accountability in Academic Life , which argues that ‘Too focused on looking in, academics have arguably become desensitized to societal injustices and abuses of power their knowledge might otherwise detect and defeat.’ His anger against the impact agenda appears almost boundless: ‘academics’ compliance is won where their objection to tyrannical governance is neutered by the moral packaging of the instrument of their regulation and containment’. Those who engage with the ‘impact agenda’ are therefore little more than sheep, disciplinary members of ‘compliant flocks’ —

Such poseurs are viewed not only with suspicion and distaste as self-serving opportunists but as individuals who are parasitical and harmful to the kinds of relationships assiduously built up and cultivated over many a year by those with (presumably) more honest, selfless and benevolent intentions.

Yet Watermeyer possibly falls into a trap of his own making in seeing the impact agenda through a decidedly short-term, instrumental lens. He is an intellectual hedgehog with one ‘big idea’ (neoliberalism is to blame for everything) and resorts to procrustean practices in order to make his view of reality fit. This is, of course, an argument that takes inspiration from the writing of Sir Isaiah Berlin, and in many ways what Watermeyer seems to lack is exactly what Berlin called a broader ‘ sense of reality ’, or a connective tissue between scholarship and society.

The responsibility of intellectuals

Political science cannot adopt a victim mentality which sees the rise of the ‘impact agenda’ as synonymous with co-option, control and conformity. The disciplinary dangers of allowing such simple calculations to emerge as a ‘ self-evident truth ’ could be devastating. It risks failing to demonstrate the intellectual vibrancy and breadth of those social and political scientists who promoted impact and relevance long before the introduction of research assessment processes.

Political science cannot adopt a victim mentality

This is reflected in the work of intellectual foxes like C. Wright Mills’ Sociological Imagination (1959), Bernard Crick’s ‘ Rallying Cry to the Academic Professors of Politics ’ (1964) and Noam Chomsky’s 1967 essay on ‘ The Responsibility of Intellectuals ’. It is through this latter work that a deeper understanding of the intellectual risks of control, co-option and conformity is to be gleaned, with Chomsky’s distinction between value-orientated intellectuals and technocratic and policy-orientated intellectuals. The former are concerned with the realm of ideas, challenging dominant ideological frameworks and placing contemporary issues in a historical context (they are the ‘wild men in the wings’); the latter focus their energies on refining and tinkering with the existing system and could therefore be trusted as ‘responsible men.’

Reclaiming our academic agency

The risk, as Watermeyer underlines , is that the impact agenda creates a pressure on political science towards technocratic and policy-orientated scholarship where the impact of such endeavours is likely to be far more demonstrable through audit processes.

The deeper risk, however, is that by blaming the likelihood of ‘reflexive conformism’ on the introduction of performance management systems, we appear to deny our own collective and individual agency as academics. That is, the capacity of political science to push back against bureaucratic conformity and to demonstrate the intellectual vitality and professional ambition of our discipline. Academics don’t have to be ‘responsible’ men or women. Stop blaming the system. Be a ‘wild man or woman in the wings’; political science, of all disciplines, should know that the bleating of sheep only ever tended to attract wolves.

The rise of the impact agenda and the increasing shift towards government-directed research funding undoubtedly brings challenges but it also brings opportunities to play a more positive, strategic and ultimately political role. This role is about shaping not only society but, instead of just accepting them, shaping the externally imposed expectations placed upon the discipline, too. It may be time for political science to return to its ‘noble’ origins.

What might it mean to say that some part of everyday life is a political issue? When something is described as a political issue, or question or problem, a few things are typically implied: that the issue is not some natural phenomenon but is shaped by political choices, that some harm might come from treating the issue as a non-political one, and that those who are concerned with politics, particularly those who broadly share the political commitments the speaker holds, ought to care more about the issue.

How about rest? Rest often appears to us as the most natural part of the day, and as such, a universal and historically unvarying experience. But rest has also in recent times become an object of social concern and a source of personal anxiety, and increasing attention is paid to the conditions that shape it. There are recurring panics about the inadequacy of our current patterns of rest, to do with amount and quality: will the blue light emanating from your phone stop you sleeping? Will staying too long at work make your children hate you? Will stress make you bald?

But these panicked discussions usually stop at a rather superficial level. First, they tend to run together leisure and rest and rest and sleep. Leisure and sleep can induce feelings of restfulness but I want to argue for the existence of rest as a distinct activity – or rather, a distinct form of in activity, one characterised by an open-endedness or indeterminacy. This vision of rest is similar to Richard Seymour’s description of activity that would stand against the data-hungry, profit-driven social industry in his critique of social media, The Twittering Machine (2019): “[W]hat if we were not in the know? What if our reveries were not productive? What if, in deliberate abdication of our smartphones, we strolled in the park with nothing but a notepad?”

Second, the problem of rest is formulated as a problem of individual choices or attitudes. After the shock of encountering the efficiency-maximising, hyperproductive practices of the modern workplace’s most dedicated denizens, it is common for people to remind themselves, or to remind others, that they are “worth more than their productivity”. But are we? Of course, we can say that people ought to have worth that does not depend on their outward busyness, but the reality is that contemporary society strongly attaches worth to productivity – materially, through wage compensation and ideologically, through the background belief that your social standing is first and foremost the product of your effort.

Such public discussion of the merits of rest can even function as disavowals, with modern-day Stakhanovites proudly confessing that they find it hard to rest because of the strength of their commitments to work. They are champions of purposeful rest, edging past the competition when it comes to tasteful beach retreats or mindfulness seminars. A little rest can be permitted, as a treat, but only for the benefit of future productivity – only instrumentally. Bill Gates, for example, meditates to improve his concentration for the rest of his work. It is not enough to say that we are worth more than our productivity: to defend restful activity for individuals, we must more thoroughly politicise it.

What would it mean to more thoroughly politicise rest? What kind of slogans would a movement for better rest have? How might we take action to create better inaction? To begin, we should identify the harms of current patterns of rest. The first of these is the uneven distribution of rest in terms of quantity: some people have more time off than others. This comes down to, among other things, how much they need to work. Rest also depends on whether you are expected to carry out caring responsibilities. Neoliberalism has led to a bifurcation of job quality, while cuts to public services have put extra pressure on the household, with significant repercussions for the distribution of non-working time.

The second problem with prevailing patterns of rest is the varying and generally deteriorating quality of rest time. Anyone who has felt the stomach-churning butterflies-practically-in-your-throat “Sunday Scaries” – the dread-filled anticipation of the return to work the following day – can tell you that the quality of rest is determined by what comes next. Precarious work extends the compromised rest that this anxiety brings into more and more of the week as workers are expected to be ready to work in line with demand, rather than keeping regular hours: 37 per cent of all UK workers are given less than a week’s notice of shift patterns and 7 per cent of working adults are told less than 24 hours in advance. How we work shapes how we rest.

Another particularly cruel interruption or even outright denial of rest comes in the form of the punitive regime of benefits sanctions, intensified under government austerity programmes, and a culture of disbelief towards the sick and disabled. Resting is viewed with suspicion. Statutory sick pay in the UK sits well below the minimum wage. This suspicion of the resting, the sick, the idling, the unproductive is not entirely new. In his account of the rise of work-discipline based around clock time, EP Thompson examines the history of moralistic outrage at the industrial labour force merely passing the time idling rather than putting it to “proper” use.

The Tory MP authors of Britannia Unchained , a free-market fundamentalist screed on how Britain can remain globally competitive, might allege that “[o]nce they enter the workplace, the British are among the worst idlers in the world”, but the reality is that more and more workers are not only subjected to the demands of productivity at work but at home too. The philosopher Cressida J Heyes argues that work and life, previously separated – albeit never fully – under the demarcated time regime of Fordism, have been “reconflated” through labour flexibilisation and communications technologies. This causes all kinds of temporal stresses rendering rest shameful and guilt-ridden. This is true of both the 9-to-5 office worker checking emails at home and the bar worker ensuring they’re the first to respond to a spare shift on the group chat.

The harms and petty cruelties of how we are permitted, and how we permit ourselves, to rest are the products of existing relationships of power in our society. The amount of time we have to ourselves and the quality of that time are conditioned by the power and status we hold. Challenging this requires fundamental changes in those relations of power, but it also means demanding decent rest as well as decent work, creating durable sites of sociability and community beyond our workplaces; not just more free time but better free time.

Rest takes you out of the temporality of everyday life; it can rub against the grain of reality. It is this reality-bending reorientation to the world that Virginia Woolf had in mind when she described how, on becoming ill and forced to rest, “[w]e cease to be soldiers in the army of the upright; we become deserters … irresponsible and disinterested and able, perhaps for the first time for years, to look round”. Poor rest is the product of a deeply unequal and exploitative economic regime, and better rest is a good in itself. Perhaps focusing on inaction could push us to action.

Paul Ginsborg taught at Cambridge before becoming professor of contemporary European history at the University of Florence. He has become vigorously involved in Italian civic affairs, especially in reaction to Silvio Berlusconi, and his critical biography of Berlusconi reached the top of the Italian non-fiction bestseller charts. He is also the author of A History of Contemporary Italy and Italy and Its Discontents.

Importance of politics

We do not really think of politics in our normal, daily lives. However, come election season, and we can barely talk about anything else; the closer the election, the more we have to discuss. However, there are many who fail to understand all the hullaballoo about politics; after all, we do see the corruption in the system and the helplessness of the people portrayed in the media each day, and we cannot help but think that politics is the root of all evil.

There are also many who do not really have a very clear idea of the political situation in their region, and may or may not comment on the situation without being fully informed about it. Whatever the case, there seems to be a unanimous agreement that political awareness is necessary. In this article, we will discuss why it is so.

Affects every aspect of our lives

Political awareness is essential because it is extremely important for us to know about what is happening around us. Not only that, it is also important to have a fully informed opinion on what is happening around us. Politics is not something far removed from our lives; political leaders make decisions that affect our lives directly. Being politically aware helps you have a say in the decisions the government will make, and even in the formation of the government that will govern your nation.

Promotes better citizenship

Being politically aware enables you to be a better citizen. If you are aware of the political situation in your country and you do not like it, you can take an active part in changing it by becoming a part of the political system and fighting the corruption. Besides, being politically aware, you will be abreast of the new laws that are being put in effect, and this will make you a law-abiding, responsible citizen. If the law feels unfair, a politically educated person will be in a position to stand up against it by taking steps within legal boundaries.

Brings about change

It is important to be politically aware in order to have a better government. It would be impossible for a country to function smoothly if a political system was not in place to run it. Without politics, there would be no leaders, and without leaders, the country would definitely descend into totalitarianism or else anarchy. It is important for both the leaders and the people to be politically aware for the country to function smoothly. Without political awareness, there would not be any instrument of change, neither in the political system nor in the society at large. It is important to be politically aware to be able to voice opinions that matter and that have the propensity to bring about significant and required change to the system.

Helps to make the right choice

In any governmental system, it is necessary for the people to be politically aware for their own good. In a democracy , you need to go to the polling booths armed with facts and ample political awareness. And this awareness is not just about which candidate is making the maximum promises, but also about how many of the said promises are likely to come true. This will require you to be really aware of the political history and general information about your nation. If you don’t have all the facts, you will most likely end up making the wrong choice. In a totalitarian government, being politically aware will enable you to see what is wrong with the system, and take steps to overthrow said system or at least make it better.

Goes beyond the government

Irrespective of the time we live in, politics remains relevant because it is the principal determinant of what governance is. And that is not just limited to the role that the government plays in our lives; it extends to the way we manage, or govern, our lives and the world that we live in. It is impossible and quite imprudent to live with no other concern than ourselves, because everything that happens around us directly or indirectly affects our own lives. Ignoring this fundamental fact can be disastrous.

In the current climate, it is easy to see why many people turn their faces away from politics. The media is filled with a bunch of negative campaigning; you would especially be tired of the mud-slinging that the various political parties take part in. But it is important to understand that this is the very reason you should be interested in politics; if you don’t look beyond the sensational campaigns, you will easily be misled about what is actually good for your country, and in extension, for yourself.
