Independence day is a festival when we celebrate our martyrs and their struggles of a long span of 200 years. India was a British colony for 2 centuries. In this period, the nation underwent a lot of events which made our freedom fighters anxious for a better future. That we are witnessing today. The events being, the massacre at Jalianwala Bagh, the faulty land settlement systems only benefiting the Crown, racial discrimination, and endless such plights. We have come so far that we have started taking it for granted, forgetting the true meaning of the day.

This day shan’t be just a day when we gather to raise the flag and eat sweets. One must keep in mind that the flag that we raise is our head, that we shall never let anyone down. The flag is also the heads that were beheaded in the time stretch. We shall not let them down either. No bite of the delicious sweet should be taken without thinking of those nights when our leaders fought empty stomachs. Us as citizens of this country should always keep the past, present and future glory alive in every moment of this day. We shall promise to keep the head of our farmers, soldiers, doctors, industrialists, and government bodies high. And we shall promise this till perpetuity.

Happy independence to everyone who has gathered here to celebrate this auspicious festival of independent India. I am thankful for having your attention and with this, I would like to begin my speech.

I am here to speak about the importance of this very day. Like every Indian knows we got independence in 1947 on the 15th of August but not many know it’s importance. As an independent citizen of the Republic of India, I would like to throw some light on the issue that is important to be addressed in the beaming light of our independence under the roof of our Tiranga.

The British raj had made the lives of natives of the subcontinent dreadful. The developments that took place under them were in no sense beneficial to a common peasant. A peasant was the backbone of the economy, as the state was encompassed with agricultural activities. There was a lot of racial discrimination. Many more graver issues like these garnered a feeling of nationalism. This was a great start on a land where people were losing the battle against the unjust.

The independence that we are taking for granted never came to us served on a plate. As time passed the nationalist feelings amongst us also strengthened. Our glorious past made us realize our worth. At this moment there was a strong uprising against the Raj. The economic drain due to commercial plantation and replacement of Indian handicrafts with machines resulted in a nation that was finally awakening. These agitations helped India recoup some say in the government doing.

Also, the censorship from the vernacular press introduction of local self-government slowly made it into the milieu. In 1892 India reached a great millstone with Indian Council Acts which increased the political level of the INC. We swiftly moved towards something great when India finally was breaking the British Raj by hailing satyagraha, swadeshi boycotts, strikes, and mass non-cooperation movement.

With all these events Mahatma Gandhi became a household name in whom people’s faith was residing. And these events made the Indian congress unfurl the Tiranga on the 26th of January 1930 when India celebrated its first independence, called Purna Swaraj. In 1947 India reached a final negotiation and the transfer of authority was finally shifting from the crown to the Indian subcontinent. It has been a long journey and we turned our lowest points into our strength by learning from that period.

India has seen the worst. Now it is our duty to make our motherland proud. This can be achieved only if we are honest towards our duties and respect everyone. Let us absorb what Gandhi Ji said:

“Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?”

I am thankful to my teachers to not just teach us the lesson about Indian independence but also teach us patriotism and love for the nation. I have also learned that as responsible citizens, we all must respect our past. Instead of shifting blames in the wake of hatred we should instead learn to fight against the odds. With this, I will give pause to my words and would want to leave you with a question. Are we all justly serving our nation? India of our dreams should be reaching the heights of honor. Every citizen of India deserves a prosperous life, and we through education can help the nation sprung in all its glory.

As we all know that Independence day is an auspicious occasion for all of us. India’s Independence Day is the most important day to all the Indian citizens and has been mentioned forever in the history.

It is the day when we got freedom from the British rule after many years of hard struggle by the great freedom fighters of India. We celebrate independence day every year on 15 th of August to remember the first day of freedom of India as well as remember all the sacrifices of the great leaders who have sacrificed their lives in getting freedom for India.

India got independence on 15 th of August in 1947 from the British rule. After independence we got our all the fundamental rights in our own Nation, our Motherland. History of slave India reveals everything that how our ancestors and forefathers had worked hard and suffered all the brutal behavior of Britishers.

Hon’ble Guests of Honor, Senior Managers, Managers, other Staff Members and My Dear Friends – Warm Greetings to all of you!

I am feeling extremely glad to have been standing in front of you and hosting this invigorating day on the eve of Independence Day. We as Indians very well realize the importance of Independence Day and should be filled with utmost pride to have finally won back our freedom from the shackles of British rule. It gives me a sense of immense joy which is indescribable in words when I see our national flag soaring in the wind high up.

I am sure you can relate with my emotions. Needless to say, Independence Day is celebrated on 15 th of August every year and it is in the year 1947 that India emerged as a free nation. Since this is a day of great historical importance for all the Indians, national holiday is being declared in India and all of us celebrate Independence Day with great warmth and show.

This is just a brief about Independence Day, but does anyone here know about the period of British Raj? Well, let me share with you all that it was between 1858 until 1947 that the Britishers colonized our Indian subcontinent. This time period is called the British Raj period.

Now, it becomes even more interesting to know how the British colonial rule began in our country. When the East India Company arrived in India, they were stripped of the goods and land of Indian citizens by conspiracy and Queen Victoria making it all the property of the monarchy.

The East India Company was founded in 1600 under Royal Charter during the monarchical reign of Elizabeth I. Though apparently its chief aim was to trade, it eventually became an indomitable force of colonization controlling the most part of our Indian subcontinent. The people living in the Indian subcontinent during that time became the subjects of the British colonial rule under Queen Victoria and subsequently other monarchs who came after her.

I am sure we all can gauge that gaining independence under such challenging situation was not an easy task, but required long and persistent efforts. One of the most prominent personalities who chiefly contributed towards gaining independence was Mahatma Gandhi or what we usually address him as Bapu .

What makes him even a greater personality is the fact that he achieved independence by not following the path of violence or bloodshed, but through his policy of non-violence wherein he did not oppose the rule of Britishers through armed fighting rather he with his followers started the non-violence campaign which comprised hunger strikes and civil disobedience. Their concerted efforts ultimately brought an end to the British Raj in our country. British rule was given an official garb under the name of “British administration of India” and under that garb Indians had to undergo a lot of pain and trauma.

We should salute those heroic spirits and pay our homage to them by remembering their brave deeds and sacrifice for our mother land and never forget that it is because of their efforts that we stand today and breathe in an Independent India.

But the seeds of self-governance in our country were laid down much before India won its independence. In the 19 th century, several Indian councilors were appointed on various advisory roles. They were hired for the advisory support of the British viceroys who continued to rule across the major parts of India. In the year 1892, a law known as the Indian Councils Act came into being with a view to empower these councilors as well as other Indian officials. But they remained under the higher British authority and had to put up with the prejudices of the white men to be able to reach the pinnacle of success in their jobs.

It was somewhat in the midnight between 14 th August and daytime of 15 th August 1947 that the treaty of Indian sovereignty was signed. This was a time when George VI was ruling as the king in Britain and Clement Attlee was their prime minister. In India Jawaharlal Nehru became the prime minister of independent India and Britain renounced his rule over India. The Britishers no longer had anything to do with the Indian affairs.

Even though we do not bear witness to those times, but we can understand very well the intensity of that crucial time when our country actually gained independence. We cannot help but feel proud of it. However, the declaration of freedom came in written in the year 1929, which is much earlier. This declaration happened along with the great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi and other known figures, who hoisted the Indian Flag.

It was indeed a big moment for all the Indians. The day of declaration of Indian independence is called as Purna Swaraj . It is quite significant to understand that even though India gained independence in the year 1947, it was only in the 1950s that India’s official constitution as an independent nation came into effect. The period in between was a transition phase in the form of 3 intervening years.

So how can we Indians let go off this momentous day in normalcy and not celebrate this historic day with great pomp and show. So on this day of great historical importance, our prime minister visits Red Fort and hoists the Indian National Flag or our Tricolor (Tiranga). Post that the national anthem is being sung. It is then followed by a stirring speech delivered by our prime minister to the people of its country. Now, the 73rd Independence Day will be celebrated on August 15 th , 2018. The whole sight looks so spectacular and mesmerizing that we can’t help but remain in awe while witnessing the whole ceremony.

In the end, all that can be said is freedom is priceless and our soldiers are so brave that they are continuously fighting on borders in order to protect our country from any militant or terrorist group. So we should never fail to value this freedom and preserve it wholeheartedly.

At the same time, CM’s of states hoist National Flag and attend parades prepared by the people and appreciate them. Many government and non-government institutions also hoist flags in their offices. Schools, and colleges decorate their classrooms, and halls with drawings of freedom fighters, writing poems, and decorating walls with balloons and art. Students also prepare parades, dance performances, choruses, and speeches. Not only in India but also in foreign countries Indians celebrate the day by distributing sweets and by singing the National Anthem. At borders, soldiers hoist the National Flag, sing, and dance to patriotic songs. They feel proud because citizens trust them and easily sleep at home.

Even today also, we have many soldiers who leave their luxurious life to protect our nation and us. For the sake of their country, they decide to join the army whether it’s Armed Forces, Navy, BSF, Commandos or Para-armed forces. Without informing their loved one they go to missions with no idea whether they will come back alive or wrapped in National Flag. Many wars took place whether it was the Kargil War, India- China War, violating the rules of the Line of Control (LOC), URI attacks, Pulwama attack but every time our forces prove their enemy that now they are not going to compromise or give any type of mercy.

On the tantalizing morning of this holy day, with patriotic fervour and pride, on 15th August, each Indian fills his heart with immense respect and love for his motherland. Being the sons of India, each year on this day, one unfolds the hues of saffron, pure white, and divine green with salutes and tribute. Past back it was on this day in 1947, that Indian independence, along with its government, came into being. On this very day, the Indian Independence Act was finally declared in this Nation. Unrolling the Indian Tricolour in the nation‘s capital, our leaders made beautiful memories with vibrant radiating love for the nation.

The independence that is freedom is that of a state in which its inhabitants or population or some portion thereof, excise self-government and sovereignty over the society. It is the sort of self-determination that focuses on exercising its power over the population, definite territory, self-ruling government, and trying to be self-reliant. In short, it will be a self-sufficient state with affairs that will be settled by themselves and without any interference.

Reminiscent of this pious day, India declared itself to be independent in all respects and was freed from the shackles of British imperialism. A struggle of about 200 years, with submission, begging for mercy, and hope – a hope to live each day like a free bird, hope to win through all the battles, and finally, a hope to visualize the dawn of a rising sun in the nation has led India to learn how to fight back for every situation which comes across to stop her. If you try to estimate the strength of India and its women, you get to see that it equals living with the pain of dipping a tea bag in a cup of hot tea.

[ SIGNIFICANCE OF INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE]

The history of India and its independence is an epic in the freedom fight and a challenge to destiny. With the beginning of a new era, each year India tries to unfold itself with vibrant hues of pomp, progress, and perseverance. Diving deep into the reels of India’s history, we get to see how our freedom fighters and the sons of India fought for winning the battle and envisioned rising India to be an independent nation.

Their invaluable sacrifices led us to live today in a civilized state with each night sleeping comfortably on our bed. It is an inspiration to all our youth to have the courage and religiously celebrate the pride of being born in this country. The echoes of the patriotic songs make the ambience of this day remould India a unique identity.

With the unfurling of the tricolour, Bharat Mata is secured from the clutches of the East India Company and the British rule and what remains is our unity – ultimate strength with diversity. Being a nation with different cultures and inspired by the footprints of great men, like Babu and Netaji, India seems to rule and understand every situation it thinks to handle itself with appropriate methods of being an extremist or an assertive one. The elixir of equality and justice, which our leaders have spread across the country, seems to be the biggest phenomenon that India could ever face.

[ INSPIRATION TO THE YOUTH ]

As the youth of the nation, it is our prime responsibility to sacrifice ourselves in contributing to our mother India. On this very day, we should pay a heartfelt tribute to the millions of martyrs of Mother India. The brave souls and the valiant soldiers, armed forces, and our police, as well as our security forces who have engaged their life in contributing to and safeguarding our mother nation, should be rewarded for their rigorous reparations.

Securing its full autonomy from the colonialists, this day captures Immense significance in the core of the Indian citizens living in any corner of this world. Holding it to be a national holiday, this day seems to have an ambience of hoisting the national flag at all institutions as well as in our homes, the exhibition of the various art forms representing the tricolour, arrangement of various cultural programs as a tribute along with the synchronizing memories of the partition of India.

Past back on 15 August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our former prime minister of India, unfurled the tri-coloured flag in New Delhi, the capital of India, at the Lahori Gate located in the Red Fort. Not only our freedom fighters but also our father of the nation that is Bapu Ji had fasted in Calcutta and was living a life of a perfect saint with the promotion of khadi and devoted his time to prayers and revolting against hatred.

Once upon a time, India was termed to be Spiceland, the place to be famous for its spices and masalas. With abundant resources and minerals, India was once termed to be the most attractive country in the world. When the British arrived and present India in their shackles, they began to misuse all the resources and started to collect all these valuable materials back to their country. Not only did they manipulate the rules but also started to force ownership on India and its policies. They work according to their whims and fancies and started implementing the divide-and-rule policy which shattered India into two parts.

[ FINAL MESSAGE AND TRIBUTE TO THE MATRYS ]

Parades are organized each year to pay tribute to all freedom fighters and to Armed Forces who each day protect us and secure us from antagonists. Therefore, it is on the 15th of August each year when we remember that being the citizens of India it is our prime responsibility to uphold the virtues of a nation, stand for a nation, be for the nation, and be of the nation. The youth who are the pillars to uphold the virtues of tolerance, love, peace should have a fellow feeling amongst the people and should have a warmblood to fight for our country. Each one of us should be inspired to look for Swadeshi outfits and cater to the fraternity and freedom of speech that our country has given us the right to. The fundamental rights of India and its directive principles have always inspired us to be proud to be Indian.

Freedom is the most loving aspect of this era. It is something which we pine for. On this Auspicious day of Independence, we all the sons of mother India fight to win because we don’t have runner-ups on the battlefield. Let’s salute the martyrs who have let her flag flow high in the saffron and prosperous green hues.

We can never forget the sacrifices of Lala Lajpat Rai, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, Khudiram Bose, Sukhdev Thapar, Vallabhbhai Patel, Mangal Pandey, Tatya Tope, Ram Prasad Bismil, Udham Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and many more who lost their lives just fighting for a better future.

We are incredibly grateful that our forebears battled to free us from British rule. They have contributed to our tremendous growth in the areas of technology, education, sports, and finance. This day has been observed as a separate holiday ever since. Numerous programs are dedicated in honour of the solemn occasion of the day during our Indian warriors' Red Fort-like march past, and schoolchildren fire 21 gunshots to signal the start of events and cultural performances. The Independence Day celebration also includes kite flying, which fills the sky with a variety of kites in all sizes, shapes, and colours. Later, starting in 1974, all of the various chief ministers unfurl the national flag.

The anniversary of the division of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan is another contemporary relevance of Independence Day. We are known for having the biggest democracy in the world. The UK Parliament approved the Indian Independence Act of 1947 on this day, granting the Indian country legislative authority.

Hello Everyone, I am here to present a welcome speech for Independence Day. Today it’s our 72 nd Independence Day and we should feel proud to be a part of an Independent nation that has freedom of speech, freedom to live life in our own way. We do not have to follow anybody’s slavery. But this was not the case 72 years ago when we were a slave to the British Government. India has been ruled by Britishers for almost 200 years and after a continuous struggle by our freedom fighters, we achieved independence on 15 th august 1947. On this day, the national flag was hoisted on red fort Delhi by Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then we are celebrating Independence Day in every government department, school, and college. This is a day of pride and joy for every citizen of the country.

How we achieved Independence

India was once called “Sone ki chidiya” which means that we had abundant resources. Our land was productive, we have ample of minerals and rocks. We were home to the largest spice market. We also have a productive human workforce. This made the British government capture our country and use it for our own benefits.

They conspired against us through the “Divide and Rule policy” and slowly gained control over the country. The people of our country being illiterate and ignorant were easily deceived by Britishers and they gained control of our kingdoms. We became cheap slaves to the British government and thus they ruled us for many years.

Later on, some eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Bhagat Singh and many more realized that we should fight for our rights. Later on, many freedom struggles took place and everybody participated in it. After years of fight, struggles, and hard work we finally gained freedom on 15 th August 1947 and became a free and independent nation.

Value of Independence

Being independent means freedom to speech and freedom to fundamental rights to each and every citizen of the country. Independence is important to lead a life of freedom. In the absence of independence, we would become a slave. All the people should value the independence which we have achieved and should never forget our freedom fighters.

Independence and Responsibility of Citizens

The citizens of an independent nation also hold responsibility towards it. All the citizens of the country should realize their responsibility to build a nation of pride. Today is Teacher’s Day, which is a celebration of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday. He was one of the best teachers our nation has ever had. He was also India’s second president. Dr. Radhakrishnan told that it would be a great honor for him if they didn’t celebrate his birthday on September 5 but instead made it Teachers’ Day. This really shows how much he cared about teaching and how much he wanted to honor all teachers.

We all know that the word “teacher” is hard to describe. It’s not easy to be a teacher, because they have to teach students all day without sitting down, figuring out their strengths and weaknesses, and then work on them in the right way. Teachers don’t just shape the lives of the students they teach, but also the lives of the whole generation. Teaching is more than just a good job. It’s also one of the greatest contributions to mankind. A teacher is an intellectual and spiritual guide, and they help their students so that they can spread their wings and fly. Mr. Mayor; Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

We stand today in the shadow of history.

We gather here in the very Cradle of Liberty.

It is an honor and a pleasure to be the speaker of the day – an honor because of the long and distinguished list of noted orators who have preceded me on this platform, a pleasure because one of that honored list who stood here fifty years ago, and who is with us here today, is my grandfather.

It has been the custom for the speaker of the day to link his thoughts across the years to certain classic ideals of the early American tradition. I shall do the same. I propose today to discuss certain elements of the American character which have made this nation great. It is well for us to recall them today, for this is a day of recollection and a day of hope.

A nation's character, like that of an individual, is elusive. It is produced partly by things we have done and partly by what has been done to us. It is the result of physical factors, intellectual factors, spiritual factors.

It is well for us to consider our American character, for in peace, as in war, we will survive or fail according to its measure.

Religious Element

Our deep religious sense is the first element of the American character which I would discuss this morning.

The informing spirit of the American character has always been a deep religious sense.

Throughout the years, down to the present, a devotion to fundamental religious principles has characterized American thought and action.

Our government was founded on the essential religious idea of integrity of the individual. It was this religious sense which inspired the authors of the Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights."

Our earliest legislation was inspired by this deep religious sense:

"Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion."

Our first leader, Washington, was inspired by this deep religious sense:

"Of all of the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports."

Lincoln was inspired by this deep religious sense:

"That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth."

Our late, lamented President was inspired by this deep religious sense:

"We shall win this war, and in victory we shall seek not vengeance, but the establishment of an international order in which the spirit of Christ shall rule the hearts of men and nations."

Thus we see that this nation has ever been inspired by essential religious ideas. The doctrine of slavery which challenged these ideas within our own country was destroyed.

Recently, the philosophy of racism, which threatened to overwhelm them by attacks from abroad, was also met and destroyed.

Today these basic religious ideas are challenged by atheism and materialism: at home in the cynical philosophy of many of our intellectuals, abroad in the doctrine of collectivism, which sets up the twin pillars of atheism and materialism as the official philosophical establishment of the State.

Inspired by a deeply religious sense, this country, which has ever been devoted to the dignity of man, which has ever fostered the growth of the human spirit, has always met and hurled back the challenge of those deathly philosophies of hate and despair. We have defeated them in the past; we will always defeat them.

How well, then, has de Tocqueville said: "You may talk of the people and their majesty, but where there is no respect for God can there be much for man? You may talk of the supremacy of the ballot, respect for order, denounce riot, secession – unless religion is the first link, all is vain."

Idealistic Element

Another element in the American character that I would bring to your attention this morning is the idealism of our native people – stemming from the strong religious beliefs of the first colonists, developed as they worked the land.

This idealism, this fixed regard for principle, has been an element of the American character from the birth of this nation to the present day.

In recent years, the existence of this element in the American character has been challenged by those who seek to give an economic interpretation to American history. They seek to destroy our faith in our past so that they may guide our future. These cynics are wrong, for, while there may be some truth in their interpretation, it does remain a fact, and a most important one, that the motivating force of the American people has been their belief that they have always stood at the barricades by the side of God.

In Revolutionary times, the cry "No taxation without representation" was not an economic complaint. Rather, it was directly traceable to the eminently fair and just principle that no sovereign power has the right to govern without the consent of the governed. Anything short of that was tyranny. It was against this tyranny that the colonists "fired the shot heard 'round the world."

This belief in principle was expressed most impressively by George Washington at the Constitutional Convention in 1783. "It is probable that no plan we propose will be adopted. Perhaps another dreadful conflict is to be sustained. If, to please the people, we offer what we ourselves disapprove, how can we afterwards defend our work? Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair, the event is in the hands of God."

This idealism, this conviction that our eyes had seen the glory of the Lord – that right was right and wrong was wrong – finally led to the ultimate clash at Bull Run and the long red years of the war between the States.

Again, the cynics may apply the economic interpretation to this conflict: the industrial North against the agricultural South; the struggle of the two economies. Say what they will, it is an undeniable fact that the Northern Army of Virginia and the Army of the Potomac were inspired by devotion to principle: on the one hand, the right of secession; on the other, the belief that the "Union must be preserved."

In 1917, this element of the American character was stimulated by the slogans "War to End War" and "A War to Save Democracy," and again the American people had as their leader a man, Woodrow Wilson, whose idealism was the traditional idealism of America. To such a degree was this true that he was able to say, "Some people call me an idealist. Well, that is the way I know I am an American. America is the only idealistic nation in the world."

It is perhaps true that the American intervention in 1917 might have been more effective if the case for American intervention had been represented on less moralistic terms. As it was, the American people eventually came to look upon themselves as giving food and guns to a general cause in which all other people had material ends and in which they alone had moral ends.

The idealism with which we had entered the battle made the subsequent disillusionment all the more bitter and revealed a dangerous facet to this element of the American character, for this bitterness, a direct result of our inflated hopes, brought a radical change in our foreign policy and a resulting withdrawal from Europe. We failed to make the adjustment between what we had hoped to win and what we actually could win. Our idealism was too strong. We would not compromise.

And thus we brought to our shoulders much of the burden of the responsibility for World War II – a burden which we would not then acknowledge but for which we have paid full price in recent years on distant shores, on faraway fields and valleys and hills, on pieces of foreign soil which will be forever ours.

It was perhaps because of this failure that the second world war never did become a crusade as did the first.

Our idealism had become tarnished, but extraordinary efforts were made to evoke it, and it is indubitably true that the great majority of Americans had strong convictions as to which side spoke for the right before our entry into the war.

It is now in the postwar world that this idealism – this devotion to principle--this belief in the natural law – this deep religious conviction that this is truly God's country and we are truly God's people – will meet its greatest trial.

Our American idealism finds itself faced by the old-world doctrine of power politics. It is meeting with successive rebuffs, and all this may result in a new and even more bitter disillusionment, in another ignominious retreat from our world destiny.

But, if we remain faithful to the American tradition, our idealism will be a steadfast thing, a constant flame, a torch held aloft for the guidance of other nations.

It will take great faith.

Our idealism, the second element of the American character, is being severely tested. Now, only time will tell whether this element of the American character will be true to its historic tradition.

Patriotic Element

The third element of the American character that I would bring to your attention this morning is the great patriotic instinct of our people.

From our pioneer days, perhaps because we were a people who developed from a beachhead on a tremendous continent, this American patriotism has always had as its core a strange and almost mystical love of the land.

Early in our history we acquired, as James Truslow Adams has pointed out, "a sense of unlimited energy face to face with unlimited resources."

Land, land, land, stretching with incredible richness across half a world. Its sheer vastness has made it a challenge to the American spirit. The endless land stretching to, the western sun caught the imagination of men who founded this nation and awakened the patriotic spirit that has become a characteristic of the American people.

In the words of America's poet, Walt Whitman, we note this deep sense of the land:

"Land of the pastoral plains, the grass-field of the world, land of those sweet-air'd interminable plateaus! Land of the herd, the garden, the healthy house of adobe! Land where the northwest Columbia winds, and where the southwest Colorado winds! Land of the eastern Chesapeake! Land of the Delaware! Land of Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan! Land of the Old Thirteen! Massachusetts land! Land of Vermont and Connecticut! Land of the ocean shores! Land of sierras and peaks! Land of boatmen and sailors! Fishermen's land!"

This preoccupation with the land records itself in the catalogue of the colonists' grievances against George III. It has always been reflected in the highest moments of our patriotism, for, throughout the years, in the early days here at home and in recent years abroad, Americans have been ever ready to defend this native land.

From the birth of the nation to the present day, from the Heights of Dorchester to the broad meadows of Virginia, from Bunker Hill to the batteries of Saratoga, from Bergen's Neck, where Wayne and Maylan's troops achieved such martial wonders, to Yorktown, where Britain's troops surrendered, Americans have heroically embraced the soldier's alternative of victory or the grave. American patriotism was shown at the Halls of Montezuma. It was shown with Meade at Gettysburg, with Sheridan at Winchester, with Phil Carney at Fair Oaks, with Longstreet in the Wilderness, and it was shown by the flower of the Virginia Army when Pickett charged at Gettysburg. It was shown by Captain Rowan, who plunged into the jungles of Cuba and delivered the famous message to Garcia, symbol now of tenacity and determination. It was shown by those who jumped with Gavin, by those who stormed the bloody beaches at Salerno with Commando Kelly; it was shown by the First Division at Omaha Beach, by the Second Ranger Battalion as it crossed the Purple Heart Valley, by the 101st as it stood at Bastogne; it was shown at the Bulge, at the Rhine, and at victory.

Wherever freedom has been in danger, Americans with a deep sense of patriotism have ever been willing to stand at Armageddon and strike a blow for liberty and the Lord.

Individualistic Element

The American character has been not only religious, idealistic, and patriotic, but because of these it has been essentially individual.

The right of the individual against the State has ever been one of our most cherished political principles.

The American Constitution has set down for all men to see the essentially Christian and American principle that there are certain rights held by every man which no government and no majority, however powerful, can deny.

Conceived in Grecian thought, strengthened by Christian morality, and stamped indelibly into American political philosophy, the right of the individual against the State is the keystone of our Constitution. Each man is free.

He is free in thought.

He is free in expression.

He is free in worship.

To us, who have been reared in the American tradition, these rights have become part of our very being. They have become so much a part of our being that most of us are prone to feel that they are rights universally recognized and universally exercised. But the sad fact is that this is not true. They were dearly won for us only a few short centuries ago and they were dearly preserved for us in the days just past. And there are large sections of the world today where these rights are denied as a matter of philosophy and as a matter of government.

We cannot assume that the struggle is ended. It is never-ending.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. It was the price yesterday. It is the price today, and it will ever be the price.

The characteristics of the American people have ever been a deep sense of religion, a deep sense of idealism, a deep sense of patriotism, and a deep sense of individualism.

Let us not blink the fact that the days which lie ahead of us are bitter ones.

May God grant that, at some distant date, on this day, and on this platform, the orator may be able to say that these are still the great qualities of the American character and that they have prevailed.

Labour has abandoned plans to bring back the pensions lifetime allowance (LTA), blaming the Tories "botched" handling of the policy.

The LTA put a cap of £1.07m on how much people could save, or benefit from investment growth, in their pensions before tax charges kicked in.

The limit was scrapped by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt last year - in a move branded a "tax cut for the rich" by Labour at the time.

Ms Reeves pledged to reinstate the cap, but has now U-turned on the £800m proposal, with allies telling the Financial Times it would add uncertainty for savers and be complex to reintroduce.

Insiders said the money it was due to raise was never allocated, so "there will be no black hole" as a result.

A Labour source confirmed to Sky News that the cap would not be reintroduced, blaming the Tories for their handling of the policy.

They said: “The Conservatives have botched their policy of abolishing the lifetime allowance, with thousands of people approaching retirement being left in limbo because of errors in legislation. "

The source claimed this had led to "the extraordinary situation where the current government advised some savers to delay retirement until after the election".

"Labour's priority is to bring stability and certainty back to the economy. That is why it will fall to a Labour government, if successful at the election, to sort out this mess and we are determined to do so.”

Sir Keir Starmer said he wants to "change the whole approach" to how students are charged for university, amid speculation he is considering a graduate tax.

The Labour leader has come under pressure to make the system fairer after rowing back on his pledge to abolish tuition fees last year.

Asked about rumours of some sort of graduate tax, the Labour leader told The Guardian: “The way the system works at the moment doesn’t work for students. It doesn’t work for universities.

"I think we should change the whole approach, and obviously we’re working on what that would look like, and there is a range of options.

"We will be looking at a fairer way overall, for students and actually for universities.”

Tuition fees rose to over £9,000 per year under the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government.

Last year Sir Keir dropped his leadership pledge to abolish the fees, blaming the Tories' handling of the economy.

Labour said at the time it would set out another solution "in the near future", with shadow education secretary Bridget Philipson saying she would like to lower monthly loan repayments.

It is not clear if more detailed plans will be unveiled in the party's manifesto, expected to be launched next week.

Reports have previously suggested that members of Sir Keir's shadow cabinet are in favour of a graduate tax.

The general idea behind this is that graduates would pay for their tuition through a special tax on their income, rather than paying back the fees through a loan with high interest rates.

Reaction to Richard Holden's interview has already started trickling in.

One Tory candidate told our deputy political editor Sam Coates that the MP was a "disgrace to the Conservative Party".

"He's put himself over candidates. He's shown complete disdain for party members," they said.

They added that it's becoming a "running joke" among candidates that Basildon and Billericay - the constituency Mr Holden is standing in - will turn into a Labour seat.

"The only reason this fool won't be associated with this disastrous election is because nobody believes anyone thinks he is competent, capable or trusted enough to be involved in the day-to-day decision-making of this campaign," they said.

Back to the interview with former defence secretary Liam Fox now.

During the sit down with Ali Fortescue, he was asked about Nigel Farage's comments about Rishi Sunak.

The Reform UK leader said the prime minister didn't understand the UK's history and culture, and he has been accused of emphasising Mr Sunak's immigrant heritage.

Mr Fox told the Politics Hub that he was "disappointed" with Mr Farage's comments.

"It's disappointing and it's dangerous. It brings an element into our politics which we should not have in British politics," he said.

"I hope that Nigel Farage will reflect on it - because I think he's a decent person. And I think he owes the prime minister and the country an apology."

Labour's shadow environment secretary Steve Reed is next to appear on the show.

He starts by reiterating that his party has no plan to increase personal taxes, including income tax, VAT and national insurance.

"People are currently paying the highest rates of personal taxation for 70 years since the end of the Second World War, and we have a cost of living crisis. People simply can't afford to pay anymore," he says.

"Labour's been crystal clear about all the way through this. We have proposals to inject funding into public services where that is required, and we have identified specific tax loopholes that we will close in order to bring that funding in."

He says this includes changes to the nom-dom tax status and the VAT break on private school fees.

"There will be no increase in the taxes that working people are paying," he adds.

He is pushed on whether tax thresholds will change.

"There is no plan and there's no need to change those because everything in our manifesto... is fully costed," he replies.

Now to the world's second-biggest election.

Millions of people have taken part in elections to the European Parliament and the votes are being counted.

Full results are expected later this evening, with seven major parties vying for seats.

Here's their current share in parliament:

The Europeans People’s Party currently holds almost 25%.
Followed by the Socialist and Democrats at just shy of 20%.
Renew Europe has 14%.
With 'The Conservative and Reformists' and The Greens taking up around 10% of seats each.
Identity and Democracy and The Left follow at nearly 7% and 5%.

Correspondent for Greece and Cyprus at the Financial Times, Eleni Varvitsioti, tells the Politics Hub that the balance of power is expected to shift on major issues like mass migration, and energy politics.

"We will see a shift to the right as I understand in the policies that will be taken in the next five years in the European Parliament," she adds.

She explains that the question is whether the right-leaning parties are going to be able to cooperate.

Next up in the studio is one of the original three Brexiteers - Sir Liam Fox.

The former defence secretary came to Rishi Sunak's defence as Ali asked him why the prime minister has decided not to talk to journalists this weekend.

He says Mr Sunak has been out campaigning and he will do more interviews as the election draws closer, adding that this is "not a cartoon election".

He also argues that people have moved on from the PM's D-Day mistake, but it's the media that is still talking about it.

"Out in the country, people are still talking about the issues that matter most to them," he says.

"The reason I wanted to come on here tonight was to say the real issue around defence is not around D-Day celebrations. It's around the fact that Vladimir Putin this week is threatening to give ballistic missiles to some of our country's enemies," he adds.

He says the election needs to focus on the "big issues", including the fact that "we are in a crisis".

"These are the serious issues. This is not a cartoon election, it is a real dangerous world we live in and the public want us to deal with the real issues," he adds.

Election veteran, our chief political correspondent Jon Craig , is first up on the Politics Hub.

He tells Ali that Rishi Sunak's recent gaffes are more than mistakes we have seen from politicians in the past, because they are the result of "bad planning and bad judgement".

"This is just terrible judgement by the prime minister," he says.

"I suppose there are questions about why David Cameron didn't say to Rishi, no don't go," he adds, referring to the PM's mistake in leaving D-Day commemorations early.

Earlier today, he also spoke to the Conservative Party Chair Richard Holden.

The MP has been confirmed as the party's candidate in Basildon and Billericay, in Essex, having represented North West Durham since 2019.

Local Conservatives raised the possibility of challenging his selection, after he was the only person shortlisted for the seat by the party.

Jon asked him about the decision, saying it was "anti- democratic" but he refused to give a straight answer about the situation.

"I've already answered these questions when I did a Channel 4 interview last week," Mr Holden said.

The show begins with the breaking news that centrist minister Benny Gantz has resigned from the Israeli war cabinet.

Addressing the nation, he said the decision was "complex and painful".

He also called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to set an election date.

His decision means the only centrist power in the embattled leader's far-right coalition has been withdrawn.

It comes after Mr Gantz presented Mr Netanyahu with an 8 June deadline to come up with a clear post-war strategy for Gaza.
