Education and Poverty in the Philippines: A Modern Dilemma
By:Karla Acosta
Introduction: ‘Education is the most potent weapon that you can use for changing the world,’ said Nelson Mandela. The link between education and poverty has presented a delicate and serious challenge for the Philippines, which is characterised by its rich cultural history and warmth of hospitality. We look into the intricate relationship between learning and poverty in the Philippines with this position paper, which gives a glimpse at today’s issues that demand attention and solutions.
Background Information: There is a deep historical link between education and poverty in the Philippines. Even during the colonial era, education was often limited to the elite, leaving the majority of the population in poverty without access to schooling. The Philippines attempted to improve its educational system after independence in the late 20th century, but remained plagued by problems.
Poverty and education are inextricably linked. Not every person without an education lives in extreme poverty, but most adults living in poverty missed out on a basic education. Poor people stop going to school because they have to work, which leaves them without the literacy and numeracy skills needed to improve their situation. With little income and few options, their children are also more likely to leave school, perpetuating a cycle of poverty that spans generations. This is unfortunate, because the most important way that education affects poverty is that it can help to end it.
My Position: I firmly believe that education is a fundamental right and privilege that should be accessible to all, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. It deeply concerns me that many Filipino youths are unable to pursue an education due to poverty or are compelled to drop out of school to work at an early age.
Argument: Education is one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against poverty and inequality. It provides individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and capabilities to secure better job opportunities and break the cycle of poverty. Education is an indispensable tool that equips individuals with the ability to make informed decisions regarding their lives, including health and financial well-being, which would ultimately help eradicate poverty in the Philippines. Access to quality education is essential to break the cycle of poverty and to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. However, in the Philippines, poverty and education are intertwined issues. The lack of access to quality education perpetuates poverty, and poverty further limits access to education. This modern dilemma calls for urgent attention and action.
Evidence: The Philippines has been struggling with high poverty rates for decades. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the poverty incidence rate was at 23.3% in 2018. This indicates that almost a quarter of the population lives below the poverty threshold. Furthermore, The World Bank shows that, in 2018, only 81% of the population had primary education, while only 63% completed secondary education. This low education rate can be one of the factors causing poverty in the country. Numerous studies reveal that education has a significant impact on poverty reduction. According to the UNESCO report, an extra year of schooling improves an individual’s earning power by 10%, thus increasing wealth creation. The same report also shows that individuals with secondary education are less likely to fall below the poverty line. The Philippines has one of the highest rates of poverty in Southeast Asia, with around 16.6% of the population living below the poverty line. Poverty affects every aspect of life in the Philippines, including education.
Counterargument: Some argue that the lack of resources in the Philippines is the primary cause of poverty and that education is a less critical factor. While it may be true that economic growth and wealth creation are crucial in reducing poverty, education plays a vital role in empowering individuals to contribute positively to society. Education helps bridge the gap between the underprivileged and wealthy classes, providing opportunities that would otherwise be unattainable.
Solutions and Recommendations: Improving access to education and promoting its importance are critical aspects of reducing poverty. The government needs to prioritize education in its national budget to improve its quality and access, especially in poor communities. Developing programs that help young children and their parents understand the benefits of education can significantly increase attendance rates. Community efforts must also be considered to supplement government programs, including scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance to students who cannot afford education.
Additionally, the government could partner with private institutions and NGOs to provide better learning facilities, resources, and teacher training. Such partnerships can further improve the education system’s reach and quality.
Conclusion: In conclusion, education must be given the attention and resources it deserves as it is an essential tool in reducing poverty. The government, private sectors, and the community must come together to provide better access to education, increase educational opportunities, and provide incentives that encourage educational attainment. These efforts must continue to break the cycle of poverty and help ensure a better future for the Filipino people.
