English Language Centre / Study Zone / Level 330 — Lower Intermediate / Grammar Topics / Modals of Polite Request: Would you, Could you, Will you, Can you

Modals of Polite Request: Would you, Could you, Will you, Can you

Introduction.

These four questions are made with modal verbs :

  • Would you... ?
  • Could you... ?
  • Will you... ?
  • Can you... ?

Modal verbs are helping/auxiliary verbs that express ideas like ability , permission , and asking for assistance . Many modal verbs have more than one meaning. They are always followed by the simple form of a verb.

For example:

Could you help me for a minute, please?

This shows that the speaker is asking for help politely.

To ask questions in a very polite way, use: Would you/ Could you (please) + simple verb + ...?

Would you please email that document to me? I need it ASAP*.

Could you explain that again, please? I didn’t understand.

*ASAP = a s s oon a s p ossible

To ask questions in a polite but more casual way , say: Will you/ Can you (please) + simple verb + ...?

Will you please answer the phone? I’m working.

Can you hold my books for me? My hands are full.

We do not use the word “may” in a polite question when “you” is the subject.

The word “please” makes the request more polite and less direct. Canadians use “please” often and visitors are expected to ask for help politely, using “please.”

Possible positive answers to the questions above:

Yes. Yes certainly.
Certainly.
Yes, of course.
Of course.
I’d be happy to.
I’d be glad to.
My pleasure.

Informally , we can say:

Sure. Okay. Uh-huh. (means yes)

To answer negatively , we say:

No. Sorry. No, I’m sorry. I can’t. Sorry, I can’t.  I’m busy right now. I’d like to, but I can’t. I’d love to, but I’m busy right now.

When you are sure that you understand the lesson, you can continue with the exercise.

Some conditions:

  • We know that the person asked is able to do it.
  • We don't know if the person asked is able to do it.

As waiwai993 answered, Can/May/Will have different meanings. However asking someone if they can help you usually implies that you would like their help, and it gives the person an opportunity to decline without being rude. Maybe they are able to help in theory, but can't right now because they are too busy. In that case they can say that they can't help. If they simply don't want to help they can just decline without a reason. So I would always use "Can you help me with this" or "Could you help me with this" unless I needed a more specific case (such as I KNOW that they CAN, but I am forcing to answer whether they WILL or not, or I know that they are ABLE, but maybe their mother won't let them*).

* Note: I think it's very unusual to use "May you help me" and would probably never say that under any circumstances, unless I was trying to be ironic.

Mr. Shiny and New 安宇's user avatar

I would actually offer a couple additional options:

Under condition 1 (that you know that the person is able to help, but you're unsure if they will):

Would you help me with this?

Under condition 2 (you're unsure if that person is able to help):

Could you help me with this?

These are similar in meaning to will and can respectively, but are a more polite way of asking. I would especially recommend these if you're in more formal setting, talking to strangers, etc.

Can you help me with this?

Technically, this asks if it is physically possible for the other person to help. However, it is commonly used to mean "Will you help me with this?"

May you help me with this?

This is equivalent to "Are you permitted to help me with this?"

Will you help me with this?

This is the one you probably want—it basically asks whether or not the other person is going to help.

  • 4 "May you help me with this?" sounds very strange to my (British English) ears. –  Steve Melnikoff Commented Nov 11, 2010 at 12:56
  • 1 same to my American English ears. Someone when asking me to do something said "May you upload the files now?" just sounds strange. but it's true, if I was working for a secret government base and I needed permission, then that could make sense. –  Claudiu Commented Nov 11, 2010 at 15:43
  • 3 Yes: "May" contrasts with "Can" in the first person, and generations of children have been told off for saying "Can I" when grown-ups held that they should have been saying "May I". But in the second person, "May you" is very unusual. –  Colin Fine Commented Nov 11, 2010 at 18:08
  • 3 @Colin Interestingly, it also contrasts with "Can" in the third person. E.g. "May Johnny come out to play?" vs. "Can Johnny come out to play". But I agree, in second person it's just odd. –  Dusty Commented Nov 11, 2010 at 23:00
  • 2 You're right, and of course this is where "may you" often comes from: children have it drummed into them that they shouldn't say "can", so they avoid saying "can you". –  Colin Fine Commented Nov 12, 2010 at 13:06

As for me, I sometimes feel a bit shy talking to people, so I prefer polite variants like:

Can you please help me with...?
Can I ask you for help with...?

Or you can just say:

I need your help.

I don't have much experience in communication with English-speakers, but I think those variants can be used in different situations.

May implies that you are asking for permission. Can implies that you are questioning somebody's ability. Will implies that you are seeking an answer about the future.

– Can you lift this? – May we go to the mall? – Will you call me?

coleopterist's user avatar

  • 1 This is true in the contexts you exemplify, but in OP's context the auxiliaries can and will are taken as polite variants, equivalent to "please" –  StoneyB on hiatus Commented Nov 23, 2012 at 21:48

Why not ask etymology for some help here?

The word can comes from Proto-Germanic kunnan

to be mentally able, to have learnt

Can is about ability , skills, knowing how to do things, whereas the word may comes from Proto-Germanic root mag- , infinitive maganan , from Proto-Indo-European magh-

to be able, have power

May is about power , the position a person is in to grant or refuse another person permission to do something, says the Online Etymology dictionary.

Can I go to the bathroom?

– etymologically – is not really appropriate for asking permission as it means something like Do you think I know how to go to the bathroom? , which might sound rude , even! On the other hand,

May I go to the bathroom?

– etymologically again – means something like Would your highness allow me to go to the bathroom? and, in the classless world we live in (?) we are not really ready to your-highness anyone if we can avoid it! Well, little children cannot really avoid it for a question of stature and status, but, when you have grown up, using may is felt as humiliating , as if you were kneeling in front of someone.

Could I go to the bathroom?

represents a middle ground between rudeness and self-humiliation , which can satisfy both the speaker and the listener!

Using the modal auxiliary can in the conditional, 'unrealising' the present, making it hypothetical, dampens the shock. I am asking about objective conditions (do you think I know how to) but using the conditional instead of the present puts more emphasis on the listener, on their ability to assess the situation, which is a tacit acknowledgement of their authority.

  • Why not ask etymology for some help here? Because it would be a fallacy: logicallyfallacious.com/tools/lp/Bo/LogicalFallacies/67/… –  user184130 Commented Aug 17, 2018 at 23:21
  • @184130: how come you are not a registered user? Interesting anyway… –  user58319 Commented Sep 22, 2018 at 17:43
  • I don't think it is fallacious: these links to the original meanings of the words,'can' and 'may', tenuous as they might have become, are still with us today! –  user58319 Commented Sep 22, 2018 at 18:30
  • I realise the orginal post is about asking for help, and not asking permission! So my answer is only partly relevant –  user58319 Commented Sep 22, 2018 at 18:37

How To Ask for Help Politely and Professionally

We get it—asking for help can be daunting for some. But because it’s almost certain that there will come a time when you need assistance, you should know how to request it. In this blog post, we’ll dive into some useful tips and phrases that’ll make asking for help a total breeze.

White text over green background reads "Other Ways To Ask for Help."

Table of Contents

Tips on asking for help.

Nine Ways To Ask for Help Politely and Professionally

  • If you have a moment, I’d appreciate your help.
  • If you don’t mind, I could use your help…
  • Would you mind helping me?
  • If it’s not too much trouble, would you mind lending me a hand?
  • Can I trouble you for…?
  • If you’re available, I’d be grateful for your assistance.
  • Would you kindly do me a favor and…?
  • May I seek your guidance with…?
  • I really need some assistance. Would you mind helping me?

Everyone needs help sometimes; that’s why you shouldn’t feel bad asking for it. However, we understand that some people find it difficult to request assistance. This is especially true if you’re an English language learner and aren’t familiar with common phrases used to ask for help.

But fear not! Below, we’re going to give you helpful tips and will also review polite and professional phrases you can use in the workplace.

Let’s get to it!

Graphic shows list of tips on how to ask for help.

Asking for help will seem incredibly difficult if you believe that you’re the only one who needs it. This is simply not the case. Everyone, at one point or another, will ask for guidance, advice, or any other type of assistance. Requesting help is a part of life. The sooner you realize this, the easier it will be for you to ask for it.

You can create an environment where everyone is willing to help if you are helpful yourself. You don’t have to wait for someone to explicitly request it. Instead, you can be proactive and ask your colleagues if there’s anything you can do for them.

If someone does ask for help, do everything in your power to assist them. If you’re not open to being helpful, others around you won’t be open to helping you either.

This one might seem obvious, but it’s worth stating: Whenever you’re asking for something, you should use words like please and thank you . It’s good manners, and avoiding doing so may make what you’re asking for sound like a demand rather than a request.

It wouldn’t make sense to ask a new hire for something that only someone in upper management can help you with. Don’t ask someone to do a task that is beyond their scope of expertise or ability. Also, this should go without saying, but don’t ask someone to do something that is wrong, illegal, or could get them in trouble in any way.

Similarly, asking for some guidance on a report you have to turn in soon is one thing, but asking someone to complete the entire report for you is another. Don’t take advantage of someone’s kindness.

Again, when someone does take the time to help you, make sure you express gratitude. This ensures that the person feels valued and that they will be more willing to help you in the future if needed.

1. If you have a moment, I’d appreciate your help.

This option is especially polite because it expresses that you need someone’s help, but only if they have the time to assist you.

I’m having a hard time making sense of this report, so if you have a moment, I’d appreciate your help .

2. If you don’t mind, I could use your help…

PSA: Mind is often used as a noun, but it also functions as a verb that means “to have an objection to.” So, essentially, this alternative is expressing that you desire assistance, but only if the recipient is willing and has no objection to providing it.

If you don’t mind, I could use your help installing the new software.

3. Would you mind helping me?

Again, this polite phrase of asking for help uses the verb mind.

The response to a question like this can get a bit confusing. If you’re willing to help, the correct answer would be, “No, I don’t mind helping you,” which means, “No, I don’t object to helping you.”

Many people answer by saying “Of course,” which can be interpreted as either “Of course, I’ll help you” or “Of course, I mind.”

Would you mind helping me? I’m rearranging my office, and the desk is rather heavy.

4. If it’s not too much trouble, could you please lend me a hand?

To lend someone a hand is an idiom that means “to help.” It’s incredibly common and appropriate to use in both casual and formal situations.

If it’s not too much trouble, could you please lend me a hand ? I translated this document into German, but I want to be certain there are no spelling or grammatical errors.

5. Can I trouble you for…?

The verb trouble is synonymous with bother. However, when used in this sense, it’s not to be taken too literally. You’re not causing a significant disturbance by asking for help, as the recipient is free to say, “no.”

Hey Derrick! Can I trouble you for some help with unloading the truck?

6. If you’re available, I’d be grateful for your assistance.

This alternative puts the recipient's priorities first. It indicates that you need their help, but only if they have the time to provide it.

If you’re available, I’d be grateful for your assistance in setting up for the presentation.

7. Would you kindly do me a favor and…?

Tip number three of the list above suggests using courteous words, and this phrase does just that by using the word kindly, which is synonymous with please.

Would you kindly do me a favor and speak to Juliette about the requested changes?

8. May I seek your guidance with…?

May is often considered the more formal way of saying can . And guidance refers to “information or advice aimed at resolving a challenge or difficulty,” making this phrase a formal alternative to saying, “can you help me?”

May I seek your guidance in choosing a new laptop? The one I’ve been using just broke today.

9. I really need some assistance. Would you mind helping me?

Compared to the rest of the phrases, this option expresses a sense of urgency by stating that you really need some help. However, even after the urgent plea, the request remains polite and professional.

I really need some assistance. Would you mind helping me ? I’m late to pick up my daughter, but really need this report dropped off at Max’s desk in a few minutes. Can you do that for me?

Thank you very much for your letter which arrived a few days ago. It was lovely to hear from you. I'm sorry, I have not written for you so along time because I studied hard to pass the final exam. However, I had the agreat weekend more than every time I went to live concerts last night with my friends. Now, I am writing to tell you how wonderful the concert is.

Nó đó có thể có thể đánh dấu trong đó với nhiều người và miracle of piano sound. As you know, my pianist is Yiruma and in last concert I could not believe that he appeared in my eyes and gave me a big hug after his performance. I also listen to soothing music which is played by him and other professional musicians. Only when i hear his song from the stage i feel anythings around i seem to disappear and i can fly with many stars on the sky to forget all my fears which i suffered before.

That is amazing.

Let's come back to our live concert. It is so cool and until now I can not forget my feeling about it. Do you often go live concerts? What kind of music do you like listening to? Who is your singer?

Indirect questions are a way of being polite. They are very, very common in English, especially when you're talking to someone you don't know. 'Yes / No' Questions. To make an indirect 'yes / no' question, we use 'if' and the word order of a normal positive sentence. This is the same as for reported 'yes / no' questions.

To ask questions in a polite but more casual way , say: Will you/ Can you (please) + simple verb + ...? For example: Will you please answer the phone? I'm working. Can you hold my books for me? My hands are full. We do not use the word "may" in a polite question when "you" is the subject. For example:

  12. "Can/may/will you help me with this?"

Yes: "May" contrasts with "Can" in the first person, and generations of children have been told off for saying "Can I" when grown-ups held that they should have been saying "May I". But in the second person, "May you" is very unusual. @Colin Interestingly, it also contrasts with "Can" in the third person. E.g.

  13. Nine Ways To Ask for Help Politely and Professionally

    3. Use words like "please" and "thank you.". This one might seem obvious, but it's worth stating: Whenever you're asking for something, you should use words like please and thank you.
