Navigation menu![]() Master Scientific IllustrationIn this international study programme you will learn to make accurate visualizations of topics from the clinical, medical and biological domain. You will get the skills to use a wide range of traditional and digital visualization techniques. It is unique in Europe!
![]() About the educationOne image tells more than a thousand words . It is not surprising that in biomedical sciences traditionally illustrations are created to enable communication between scientist and author, teacher and student, or physician and patient. Art and science come together in scientific illustration. Best of two top universitiesThe Master Scientific Illustration is an international study programme in which you will meet students from European countries and beyond. It is a cooperation between Zuyd University of Applied Science and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University. Language This study programme is in English. The lecturers also speak Dutch and German. Study load Normally you will study and work at the university for about 20 hours a week. In addition you will have to study at home for about 20 hours a week. Duration Full-time for the duration of two academic years from September till July. Location Scientific Illustration has it's residence at the attic of a beautiful restored former mansion in the city centre of Maastricht. In addition you will quite often have lectures or workshops at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University. Cookies are required for this element.Zuyd uses third-party content for some elements on its site. This requires cookies. More information? Read our cookie-statement . A small team of dedicated professionals, who all have their own specialism, like scientific and medical illustration, anatomy, software, facial reconstruction etc., will train you. Input from their work experience and their involvement in issues from the professional practice keep the programme up-to-date, educationally justified and closely connected to this professional practice. They all regularly publish imagery, contribute to congresses and take part in the debate about the profession of scientific and medical illustration. External professional experts contribute as guest speakers in lectures, workshops and in the final graduation projects. ![]() ”Anatomy in both men and animal is, in my opinion, the most beautiful art ever made. It is a privilege to be able to study and visualize it.” ![]() "As a biologist and clinical anatomist I will always oblige myself to emphasize the importance of clear and functional illustrations in science. What better circumstances than to work in this field and to teach and interact with talented students in scientific illustration?” ![]() "Having enjoyed multidisplinary training and experience,I feel privileged to educate prospective medical artists with a holistic view.” ![]() "To create convincing medical illustrations, I think you equally need your eyes, your brain and your hands. This institution tries to equally train your way to perceive nature, the skills to convey the essence of a problem and the technical skills to visualize its (sometimes unexpected) inner beauty." Tuition feesThe tuition fees for this master differ from the usual institutional tuition fees because this is a non-funded study programme. The fees are based on the actual costs.
Education and Examination RegulationsThe education and examination regulations provide all the information you will need about the content of the study programme, the academic support provided, and the way in which examinations are organized.
Study structureThe study programme consists of three themes:
Each of the themes consists of three to five components and each component involves one or more assignments, which deal with various aspects of scientific illustration and in which various traditional visualization techniques are practised and applied. The assignments are graded in terms of complexity, leading up to the level required for professional practice. Read more about the study programme (pdf). ![]() Training in technical skillsYour training has a strong emphasis on the application of conventional imaging techniques in conjunction with photography, video and computer techniques for accurate two-dimensional display of three-dimensional structures. Additional training in digital three-dimensional reconstruction and modelling is given in workshops. You acquire a broad theoretical basis as well as practical experience in working with medical techniques such as dissection, processing of microscopic and macroscopic serial sections and working with medical imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). ![]() Becoming a scientific storytellerTo be able to create a scientifically correct image, you must not only be a good craftsman, but also an outstanding 'storyteller' and communicator. You must be capable of communicating with specialists from different scientific fields, understanding the scientific problem and then be able to convert it into visualization for a specific target audience. Creating images for patient education requires a different approach than creating images for a group of medical specialists. For this reason you will not only be trained in anatomy and medical nomenclature but you’ll also be guided in the field of communication. Furthermore, by means of practical assignments (including illustrating a surgical procedure) you will build up experience in making abstractions and schematisations of the reality to create an image that tells the scientific story in the best possible way. Final examination and graduation The programme ends with a final examination, consisting of two components:
In addition, you exhibit your work in a graduation exhibition and you compose a portfolio of your representative artworks you produced during the programme. The publication and the portfolio serve as masterpiece that helps you to find work in a professional practice. Related degrees
Search termElverding conference 2023: enhancing sustainable business and corporate regulation in the eu. The Elverding Conference 2023 on ‘Enhancing sustainable business and corporate regulation in the EU’ took place on 26 October 2023. At the conference, presenters outlined how effective ownership strategies could be used to promote business sustainability and how directors’ duties could be aligned with the social role of corporations. ![]()
The context for the conference was that the European Commission has adopted a range of regulatory initiatives in support of the EU’s green transition such as the Taxonomy Regulation, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and Regulation on Sustainability-related Financial Disclosures (SFDR). The aim was to discuss what shareholders and managers could do to promote this transition. Effective and sustainable approaches to active ownershipThe first conference session focused on effective and sustainable approaches to active ownership and discussed how investors can effectively convey their long-term expectations on sustainability to companies. It included presentations from Prof. Sofie Cools (KU Leuven and Radboud University) and Prof. Rob Bauer (Maastricht University). A key insight from Prof. Cools was that there are notable differences between jurisdictions in terms of shareholder rights to submit proposals on sustainability-related matters, and that strategy is often a competence of the board rather than of the shareholders. These factors limit the potential role of shareholders in pushing for business sustainability. Prof. Bauer’s presentation showed that divestment from unsustainable companies does not seem to have a real-world impact, that investor engagement with companies on sustainability only succeeds in 20 percent of cases, and that this engagement is more likely to be successful when it is collaborative, intensive, and encompasses multiple activities. Directors’ duties and social role of corporationsThe second conference session turned to directors’ duties and the social role of corporations. It consisted of presentations from Prof. Paul Davies (Oxford University) and Prof. Jaap Winter (VU Amsterdam). Prof. Davies argued that changes in corporate purpose – such as those envisioned by Prof. Colin Meyer in his book Prosperity – are by themselves insufficient to lead to a sustainable transformation of business activities. He indicated that more structural changes would be required to enable these kinds of sustainable purpose, and suggested that it might be better to invest social and political capital on other, more effective projects. Prof. Winter, for his part, highlighted that companies, as members of society, need to consider the effects of their actions on other members. He suggested that this may require the re-imagining of corporations as human constructs, an increase in the group of stakeholders to whom the corporation has a duty of care, and a shift in company decision-making so that values, intentions, and convictions are integrated into choices and decisions. ![]() Panel discussionThe conference closed with a panel discussion featuring members from the business and investor community (Annelien van Meer (Sustainability Manager of a.s.r), Rients Abma (Executive Director of Eumedion), and Simon Rawson (Director of Corporate Engagement and Deputy CEO of ShareAction). Van Meer emphasised the importance of thoughtful communication, the role of leadership, and the importance of language. Abma noted a strong stance in favour of sustainability in the institutional investor community and warned of the risk that shareholder proposals may infringe on legitimate areas of the board’s competence. Lastly, Rawson highlighted the importance of exploring different pathways to expose companies to the perspectives, preferences, and interests of shareholders. They got tips on making presentations from former NFL champions Lou Alexander ’12, Derrell Smith ’10 and Roland Williams ’97. They learned storytelling from sports broadcasters Andrew Siciliano ’96 and Cameron Lynch ’21 and entertainment producers Kip Konweiser ’85 and Doug Robinson ’85. They heard about the power of marketing from We Are Social head Rebecca Coleman ’00 and discovered the keys to pitching a TV show idea and giving a great TED talk. Those were among many lessons packed into CRS 360, Communication Strategies in Sports. The College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) offered the new, three-credit Maymester course for the first time this year to provide a study-away opportunity for student-athletes whose academic year schedules are defined by little flexibility due to training and game commitments. ![]() Emmy-award-winning entertainment executive Kip Konweiser ’85 (center), provided insights about communicating in sports and sports-events production during a classroom session. (Photo by Anna Proulx) Rachel Dubrofsky , professor and chair of communication and rhetorical studies (CRS), and Anna Proulx , visual and performing arts program director for the University’s Dick Clark Los Angeles Program, worked with Tommy Powell G’20, assistant provost for student-athlete academic development in the Department of Athletics, to devise the experience program. Classes, activities mixThe students experienced class days split between coursework, business site tours, discussions with top sports and broadcasting executives and the creation of presentations. They were taught by Rob Carpenter , renowned award-winning book author, documentary creator and film producer. Students were housed in a Hollywood Hills apartment complex near the SU in LA center . They enjoyed a weekend Dodgers game and a hike to the iconic Hollywood sign, and got to meet with many members of the LA Regional Alumni Council for a roundtable discussion. Another highlight of the course was the tour of Fox Sports, where students visited the set used for several Fox Sports shows organized by alumni Bernie Kim ’01 and Cayden Feifer ’12. Students were able to meet “Speak” show hosts LeSean McCoy, Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor and Skip Bayless. ![]() Many Syracuse University LA Regional Alumni Council members who are prominent in their fields met with the students for a roundtable discussion, including Jordan Pynes ’98, Frank McFarland ’94, Phil Netz ’98, Sean Carey ’89, JaNeika James ’05 and Amelia Goldstein ’19, pictured with the student group. (Photo by Anna Proulx) “This was an incredible opportunity to explore a course in a short amount of time, get a sense of Los Angeles, go on many site visits and meet alumni who are excited to impart their wisdom, who really care about these students’ success and who now are contacts for continued communication,” Proulx says. Life after athleticsShe believes the course’s career-development focus offers a sense of what life could be like after athletics and after Syracuse. “Many of our former players who moved beyond football have gone into careers in entrepreneurship, sales management, investments, NASCAR, athletic design and sports broadcasting. These alumni showed the students that the skills they already have from football are transferable to many different future careers.” Student LeQuint Allen Jr. ’26, a running back on the Syracuse football team and a sociology major in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, says it was “unbelievable” how many people he met during the two weeks he spent in Los Angeles. He says he identified with alumnus Lou Alexander, “whose story is like mine,” and he wants to model the demeanor of alumnus Roland Williams. “I was getting a lot of tips from him, seeing how he handled himself and learning from him, and I felt like I can mirror that.” ![]() Roland Williams ’97, center, a former Superbowl champion, was one of many alumni who spoke with the group of Maymester CRS 360 students. (Photo by Anna Proulx) A good balanceKyle McCord, a CRS major, will graduate this December. The quarterback plans to play football professionally after graduation then envisions a career in either coaching or sports broadcasting. He was impressed by the way the course maximized the Maymester timeframe. “It was a really good balance between school and being able to explore LA. Given how busy our schedules are, carving out two weeks and having a very productive trip, I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’ll 100% be able to put what I learned to use right away.” Marlowe Wax Jr. ’24, G’26, earned a psychology degree in May and is now enrolled in the project management master’s program in the College of Professional Studies. The linebacker says the course allowed him to learn a lot about public speaking and how to control a stage. “I want to go into professional football, and after that, I’d love to do anything in sports. I really appreciate the number of people I met and I love that I have these people to connect to.” ![]() Students David Clement and Yazeed Haynes practiced pitching their origin stories with instructors Rob Carpenter and guest speaker Lou Alexander at the Dick Clark Los Angeles Program. (Photo by Anna Proulx) Powell says the course offered a transformative learning experience. “Our student-athletes gained unparalleled exposure to dynamic instruction and industry leaders, that enriched their academics and broadened their perspectives,” he says. “Few student-athletes have the opportunity to benefit from study abroad or away opportunities. This class aligned with the University’s academic strategic plan and our commitment to prepare students not just in their sport but as global citizens poised to lead in an interconnected world.” More information about VPA’s Los Angeles Semester is available on the school’s study away program website .
