How a Break From Alcohol Affects Your Health and Fitness Goals

L ike many Americans, I embraced my first Dry January this year and consumed no alcohol for 31 days. My main motivation: curiosity.

I eat healthy and exercise regularly, but allow myself a glass (or two) of wine with dinner. Would skipping my nightly tipple noticeably affect how I felt or boost my fitness during or after the month?

I asked experts to explain how alcohol affects our health and fitness and whether one month of abstinence could move the needle on our fitness efforts.

They all agreed that it depends on how much and how frequently you drank before. Some say you might see small gains in performance, while others say the boost in your overall health outweighs the boost you’ll see in your fitness.

Alcohol harms workouts

If you’ve been hitting the gym but haven’t seen any gains, alcohol could be to blame. People who exercise more tend to drink more, according to a study by the Cooper Institute in Dallas published in 2022. But exercise doesn’t cancel out the effects of alcohol.

“Alcohol cancels out the effects of exercise,” says Stella Volpe, department head of human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech.

Alcohol travels through your bloodstream to every organ and tissue in your body, causing dehydration and slowing your body’s ability to heal itself. It also impairs protein synthesis and reduces insulin, which stimulates muscle growth, Volpe says. Ingesting alcohol immediately after training or competition can reduce the rate of muscle protein synthesis, or how we build muscle mass, by 37%, research shows. So you may want to skip that postrace beer.

“Or at least wait an hour and be sure you are also hydrating,” Volpe says.

Chris Travers, an exercise physiologist with the Cleveland Clinic, notes that alcohol has been shown to decrease the secretion of human growth hormone, which can suppress the growth and repair of muscles.

I didn’t see any noticeable difference in my strength in January. However my WHOOP fitness tracker showed that my resting heart rate was slightly lower and my heart rate variability had nearly doubled after just one week without alcohol, an indication that my body was more rested and recovered.

This makes sense, because alcohol affects our heart rate. WHOOP compared users who did Dry January with those who didn’t and found that those who went dry saw a similar pattern.

Dropping drinking=dropping pounds

If someone drops the alcohol and concentrates on good nutrition and exercise, they could lose up to 5 pounds in one month, says Dr. Brian Shapiro, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic.

“When people drop a few pounds, they often see their exercise performance improve,” he adds.

Weight loss is one of the most noticeable results of going dry, particularly if you were drinking heavily, he says.

At seven calories a gram, alcohol is the second-highest calorie-containing substance we consume, after fat. (Mocktails can also be high in calories.) Few people actually measure their pours. That means you’re likely consuming more than one standard drink: 12 fluid ounces of regular beer, 5 fluid ounces of wine, or 1.5 fluid ounces of a distilled spirit.

Alcohol can also mess with our metabolism, says Meridan Zerner, a sport and performance dietitian at Cooper Clinic. Typically, the body prioritizes metabolizing alcohol for energy over other substances, which can delay the breakdown of fat and lead to weight gain.

Less boozing, more snoozing

Quality sleep is key to the recovery the body needs to reap the benefits of your workout efforts.

A University of Sussex study published in 2019 found that 71% of those who embarked on Dry January reported better sleep, while 67% said they were more energetic.

Although alcohol helps you fall asleep faster, it impairs the quality of your sleep, Zerner says. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means consumption before bed will likely cause you to wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.

Staying asleep and achieving the restorative depth of sleep the body needs are more beneficial than falling asleep quickly, she says.

Marianne McGriff typically has a glass of wine or cocktail before dinner nightly. The 75-year-old retiree from Zionsville, Ind., started the year dry and added exercise to the mix.

“I’m sleeping eight to nine hours uninterrupted and have so much more energy,” she says.

What about after January?

A one-month break from alcohol can lead to improvements in insulin resistance, blood pressure and body weight, according to studies from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Your liver, which filters toxins like alcohol from the blood, will also thank you.

Shapiro notes that new exercisers often see the biggest benefit from cutting out alcohol because they feel more energized, which makes working out more enjoyable.

Plenty of people who take a break from drinking start up again. A break is certainly better than not stopping at all, health specialists say. Volpe recommends moderation and says one of the biggest takeaways from a month without drinking is that it allows people to check in with their habits and think about why they reach for a drink in the first place.

A 2023 analysis of more than 40 years of research concluded that even moderate alcohol consumption can lead to health problems. In light of the new findings, the World Health Organization issued a statement saying abstaining is the healthiest option.

Dry January didn’t make me decide to give up alcohol, but I also plan to cut back. My month without it made me realize drinking wine with dinner had become a habit, just like my morning workout or coffee.

Did I miss it? Only when I was out with friends celebrating a special occasion or when I was at a nice restaurant with fantastic wine. I plan to try to make alcohol a treat, just like dessert, and incorporate more dry spells throughout the year—especially if I’m training for an athletic event.

If you've spent any time in airports, you know it comes with a lot of sitting and waiting. And that's no fun. So health and fitness expert Beth Oliver joined us to share an easy way to work in a workout while you're waiting for your flight.

Roller Bag Workout

Whether you are a frequent flier travelling from meeting to meeting or someone setting off on your dream vacation, you’ll probably find yourself at some point spending time in airports and wondering why you feel so crummy. And, of course, the regular culprits are at play here. Too much sitting, not enough sleep, water or movement. And while some folks aren’t shy about throwing out a few burpees in the airport, most of us (especially if we are in business attire) could use a less obtrusive way to sneak in some feel good movement in-between flights. Best case scenario, start by walking as much as you can. Walk to your gate, double check that nothing has changed and that you know what time boarding begins. Then do some quick math to figure out how much time you can dedicate to your workout. Start by just walking, aim for ten minutes of constant movement. Then look for a little space near your gate. You’ll be using your roller bag with the handle up for some support, but it also doubles as a little space barrier between you and other people. These exercises will get fluid moving through your body, but you won’t have to worry about how dirty the floor or chairs might be. Start with your roller bag on the left side of your body, holding lightly on the extended handle.

Do at least 10 of each and then repeat on the other side.

Best workout app by far

I love this app! I'm out of shape and I often get dizzy when I do any kind of standing exercise so this is perfect for me! It's extremely quick and easy, with options for longer or more strenuous workouts if you want. There are a lot of features you can modify and I'm constantly finding new workouts, stretching techniques and yoga, all sitting or laying down so anyone can do them and get results! I do the day by day chair exercises (less than 10 minutes) the app suggests but usually I do multiple sets. When I've done exercise by myself in the past I haven't seen much results & usually get discouraged and quit, but I love how the app tells you exactly what to do, but gives you options to personalize your workout. I was in a TERRIBLE car accident and was severely injured, so most workouts I've tried have been painful, but this app let's you specify what injuries you've had and modifies your workout plan to help you get results without any pain! INCREDIBLE app!

Suddenly I’m back to 3 minute routines

I picked a chair exercise plan. It is more stretching than anything else. But I thought it would get to be more exercise as the days went by. Today I did the 20th day of my plan for chair exercises. But when I went into the app, it came up as day 1 of a mat exercise plan. I went in and changed back to chair exercises, hoping I’d get back to where I was. In order to move leave this screen, I had to agree to change the days from my old plan (mat exercises, which I never did) to day one of my “new” plan. Nevertheless, the app then took me to day 20 of the the chair exercises plan I have been following. But when I finished, the app set me up for day 2 for tomorrow’s plan and I am back to a 3 minute exercise routine. I don’t feel this app is improving my overall fitness and I wish I could get my money back. The 7 day trial is worthless and doesn’t really let you know how the app works…although after 20 days, I’m not sure how the app works as I didn’t choose mat exercises. Update: From 3 stars to 4. The customer service provided the the staff of this app is excellent. They let me know that an update was due. After the update, I was still at day 2, but by the next day, I was back at day 21. I still have concerns as to whether this app will actually improve my overall fitness. But they are responsive.

Inspira ends non-medical fitness programs at Cumberland, Salem sites

VINELAND — A decision at Inspira Health Network to leave the physical fitness business to area YMCAs and private companies is sending about 2,500 South Jerseyans looking for someplace new for their workouts this summer.

Inspira Fitness Connection, a separate operation from Inspira therapy programs, operates from a free-standing facility on West Sherman Avenue in Vineland. It also operates on smaller scales within Inspira hospitals in Bridgeton and in Elmer.

A spokeswoman for Inspira said Fitness Connection clients were told last week the gyms will close on June 30. Customers who paid for time past that date are getting refunds, while Inspira also is in contact with the Vineland YMCA and others about taking Inspira clients.

Vice President Kathleen Scullin Marinelli said Thursday Inspira wanted to notify clients well ahead of the closing and assure them of refunds. There is no impact on any medically prescribed physical therapy programs.

“Some people have very strong feelings about it,” she said. “And we’ve been a part of their lives through thick and thin, and raising kids, and then retirement.”

Scullin Marinelli said what’s behind the decision to get out of fitness business is that space for regular medical programs is tight and getting tighter. Inspira is growing in patient numbers and services, she said.

Scullin Marinelli said Inspira will not be selling the Fitness Connection building in Vineland. Its Sports Rehab Care operation operates from a section of the building. Inspira views the building as the future site for other as yet undetermined medical programs.

“We have a study underway right now to evaluate the building requirements,” Scullin Marinelli said. “The (Vineland) building’s been there more than two decades. So, we need to evaluate the building requirements and some of the … needs that we identify in our Community Health Needs Assessment.”

Scullin Marinelli said reviews also are happening with the Bridgeton and Elmer buildings.

“In terms of this other space, the community fitness space?” she said. “In our estimation, we have community partners in the fitness business that have much longer hours of operation and less expensive memberships.”

Vineland YMCA representatives will be at the Vineland facility Monday morning to meet with clients. “They have a great deal of programming for our senior citizen clients,” she said.

“Where possible, we’re working with our community partners to offer membership discounts to our clients,” Scullin Marinelli added.

Fitness Connection has a small number of full-time and per diem employees. They are being advised to consider applying for open positions in other departments within Inspira, she said.

Feeling pain under your left breast can be especially worrying. After all, important organs and structures sit on that side of the body, like your heart, left lung, stomach, spleen, esophagus, ribs, and more. So, what happens if suddenly, you feel pain in that area? Is it necessarily a cause for concern?

First, don’t panic. It’s important to consider different factors before jumping to conclusions, says WH advisor Samantha Nazareth, MD. For example, how old are you? What you were doing when the pain began? What is your pain severity? You should also consider what your medical history entails, what medications you’re on, and if you have any other symptoms along with the pain, Dr. Nazareth says.

In some cases, pain under your left breast could be totally harmless, but other times, it might signal an underlying medical issue. Here are 10 possible reasons you might be experiencing pain under your left breast, according to doctors—and when to seek help.

What causes pain under your left breast?

1. muscle soreness.

Experiencing slight physical discomfort is normal after an intense workout—it just means you committed (perhaps a little too hard). If you feel pain under your left breast after a chest-activating workout, like a bench or dumbbell press, there's a good chance your muscles are sore . The area might be tender to the touch, and the pain might feel dull, tight, or achy for a few days, Dr. Nazareth says.

Soreness should go away within a few days to weeks. Resting and applying hot or cold therapy to the area can help, Dr. Nazareth says. Put crushed ice in a bag or use a hot compress or heating pad and leave it on the affected area for up to 20 minutes for two days after the injury, and repeat every two hours if you need extra relief. An over-the-counter cream or gel with pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects can also help, Dr. Nazareth says. Capsaicin, salicylate cream, or gel—which can be used three to four times a day—might do the trick.

2. Acid Reflux

You know that super uncomfortable squeezing or burning sensation in your left and center chest? That’s acid reflux , and it happens when acid flows from the stomach back into the esophagus, or food pipe, Dr. Nazareth says. Acid reflux can make you feel nauseous, develop a cough, or experience a sour or bitter taste in your mouth. It typically occurs after meals, when you’re stressed, and can feel exacerbated when you're lying down. It can last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours, Dr. Nazareth adds.

Taking an over-the-counter antacid can help you resolve the issue. Diet changes can also help—like not eating three hours before bedtime and avoiding foods that can make reflux worse—like coffee or caffeinated foods, spicy foods, chocolate, alcohol, peppermint, and fatty foods. Quitting smoking also helps with reflux, says Jayne Morgan, MD, a cardiologist and the clinical director of the Covid Task Force at the Piedmont Healthcare Corporation.

3. Costochondritis

Costochondritis occurs when you have inflammation in the cartilage that joins your ribs to the breastbone (an area is known as the costochondral joint). The pain, which usually affects the lower ribcage, might feel dull and gnawing, and it’ll become more intense if you touch the area, take a deep breath, or cough. It may start on the left side of your chest and spread slowly throughout the rest, per Cleveland Clinic .

It’s not totally clear why some people develop this condition, however, “for some, it might be caused by trauma, heavy lifting, hard exercise, or an illness,” Dr. Nazareth says. The pain typically settles on its own, but if you have costochondritis, you should avoid lifting or pushing heavy things for a few weeks. In the meantime, you can do some stretches to relieve the pain, like the doorway stretch and sphinx pose, and you can also use a heating pad on the area.

4. Tietze Syndrome

This condition is often confused with costochondritis because it's also identified by inflammation in the costochondral joint. They share almost identical symptoms, but the pain caused by Tietze syndrome is usually felt closer to the shoulder and affects the upper ribcage, per Cleveland Clinic . You'll also notice chest swelling, which is absent in costochondritis.

Depending on which ribs are affected, you might experience pain when you move or twist your upper body or feel uncomfortable when sitting or lying down in certain positions. Coughing, sneezing, and vomiting may also be more painful than usual. No one really knows what causes this condition—some believe it's due to small traumas in the chest like straining during exercises, a respiratory infection, or coughing fits, Dr. Morgan says. Tietze syndrome can be treated with rest and OTC anti-inflammatory medications, and it’ll usually resolve fully in one to two weeks, she adds.

5. Pleurisy

If you feel sharp, stabbing chest or shoulder pain when breathing in deeply, there’s a chance it could be a result of pleurisy, which is inflammation of the lining of your lungs (pleura). This occurs when inflammation in your lungs moves into the pleurae and causes them to swell up and rub against each other, per Cleveland Clinic . The pain can accompany a viral infection or result from a chest injury or pneumonia, in which case you would also have a fever and cough, Dr. Nazareth says.

If you have untreated pneumonia, there’s a chance that bacteria from an infection can enter the bloodstream and affect your other organs, so see a doctor ASAP. If the pleurisy is caused by a virus, it might take a couple of days for the pain to go away. But if it’s bacterial pneumonia, the pain will most likely persist until it’s treated, Dr. Nazareth says.

6. Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia—a rarer cause of pain under your left breast—is when your upper stomach bulges through the diaphragm, which separates your abdomen and chest, per Mayo Clinic . The painful sensation might feel like a pulling or tearing from the diaphragm right below the left breast, Dr. Nazareth says.

You might feel this pain when you have increased intra-abdominal pressure, like when lifting weights, groceries, or other heavy objects. It usually lasts as long as you’re doing the movement that is causing the pain. Small hiatal hernias won't cause any other symptoms, but larger ones could come with heartburn, acid reflux, shortness of breath, feeling full soon after you eat, vomiting blood, and black stools. Talk to your doc if you think you have a hiatal hernia because it generally requires surgical repair, Dr. Morgan says.

7. Pericarditis

Pericarditis is inflammation of the outer lining of the heart, also called the pericardium, Dr. Morgan says. When the swollen and irritated layers of the pericardium rub against each other, chest pain occurs. The duration varies depending on which of the four types of pericarditis you have, and symptoms can include a cough, fatigue , leg swelling, low-grade fever, a racing heart, shortness of breath while lying down, and swelling in your stomach.

Symptoms of pericarditis can overlap with those of other heart and lung conditions, so always consult your doctor if you notice sudden chest pain.

8. Pulmonary Embolism

A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot in the lung. It's most common in people who have had a recent surgery, have been on bed rest or sitting for a long time, like on a flight, or have been pregnant, Dr. Nazareth says. The type of pain varies, but it’s usually sharp and stabbing, and comes on suddenly, she says, adding that it gets worse with deep breaths.

The pain might be accompanied by dizziness, fast breathing, shortness of breath, a fast heart rate, coughing (maybe even coughing up blood), and anxiety. A pulmonary embolism can also cause a blood clot in the leg, making it swollen, red, and painful. This disease is potentially life-threatening, so you should book an appointment with your doctor right away if you suspect you have PE.

Angina refers to “pain in the chest or behind the left breast caused by blocked arteries,” Dr. Morgan says. “Angina could be a warning sign of a heart attack.” It generally affects those who have a blockage in their coronary arteries, which are responsible for transporting oxygen to the heart.

You may experience burning, squeezing, dull pain, tightness and pressure, shortness of breath, nausea, and pain going up your left arm, jaw, or back. Physical exertion can cause angina, but it can also stick around even after you cease activity. Regardless of how long it lasts, seek medical attention immediately if you think your discomfort is angina-related, given that it could signal a heart attack.

10. Heart Attack

Pain under your left breast doesn't necessarily mean you're having a heart attack, but in some severe cases, it may. If you feel what you would describe as "new" chest pain, involving pressure or discomfort that worsens with activity, there’s a concern that it could be a heart attack, Dr. Nazareth says. You may also feel the same aching in your shoulder, arms, back, neck, and jaw.

Heart attack symptoms can also include trouble breathing and feeling nauseous, sweaty, or lightheaded. The pain may last for more than a few minutes or go away and return, per the CDC . These signs should prompt you to call 911.

When To See A Doctor

If your symptoms aren't very severe (think: mild discomfort or occasional twinges of pain), schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider within a few days to a week, Dr. Nazareth says. But if your pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or radiating pain to the arm, jaw, or back, seek medical attention ASAP. “If the pain is sudden and severe or persists for more than a few minutes, call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency room immediately,” Dr. Nazareth says.

During the appointment, you can expect a medical history questionnaire and a thorough physical examination. “Your physician may ask questions about the nature and duration of the pain, any exacerbating or alleviating factors, associated symptoms, medical history (including any history of heart disease, gastrointestinal issues, or musculoskeletal problems), medications, and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress levels,” Dr. Nazareth says.

Depending on the results of the clinical assessment, your doctor may also order diagnostic tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to assess heart function, imagine studies such as a chest X-ray, an ultrasound with a mammogram, or blood tests to check for markers of inflammation, infection, or cardiac enzymes, according to Dr. Nazareth. You may be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and management.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
