Attendance : Students who do not attend a JMC class or lab on the first day of classes may be dropped from the class or lab. Transfer Work: Students may transfer in a maximum of 12 credit hours of journalism and mass communication coursework prior to full admission to the Gaylord College. Once fully admitted to the college, students may petition the faculty to have an additional three (3) credit hours from an outside ACEJMC institution applied to their University of Oklahoma degree. A maximum of fifteen (15) credit hours of JMC transfer coursework may be applied to a degree. Individual Studies (e.g., courses titled “Independent Study”): A maximum of 12 total semester hours may be counted toward graduation. Senior Institution Hours: A minimum of 60 semester hours applied toward graduation must be earned at senior (4-year) institutions. Residency:
Application for Graduation: Students must apply for graduation during the term in which they complete their degree requirements in order to graduate in that term. Application forms are available in the Student Services Center, 2533 Gaylord Hall. The deadline for completion of all coursework to graduate in a particular term is the last day of classes in that term.

USAO’s creative writing minor comprises 21 credit hours in literature, theory and various genres of writing. The program allows students to study the history and technique of both fiction and poetry, as well as writing for stage and screen.
The OU Writing Center is a pedagogical service that supports OU undergraduate and graduate students as well as members of the Norman/OKC community. The primary goal of our services is to help writers learn something they can use in the future.

The Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday for summer hours beginning on Monday, June 3 and closing on Thursday, July 25 from 10:00am to 3:00pm in Wagner Hall, Room 280. Remote appointments are also available. We will be closed for appointments from Friday, May 10 until Monday, June 3, 2024.

Camp Jumpstart is a year-long program that begins with this multi-day writing camp for graduate students in the beginning stages of their thesis or dissertation writing process. This camp includes dedicated writing time, opportunities for feedback, and presentations on setting SMART goals, understanding the thesis or dissertation as a genre, managing writing anxiety, effective task management, program management systems, and effective library searches.
The rest of Camp Jumpstart includes coordinated appointments in the fall along with writing retreats for participants each semester. This program aims to provide structured support during the early phases of thesis/dissertation work.

Are you looking to set aside time each week to work on a writing project? Then join us weekly for Write Start. We'll provide the space and you bring your project to work on independently.
Note: No consultants will be available during Write Start, so if you're looking for feedback, take advantage of an appointment instead.
