How We Bear Witness: Writing Oklahoma in Fiction and Creative Nonfiction

Class Details

This course will be an Intensive writing workshop focused on creating fiction and creative nonfiction that reflects the students’ engagement with Oklahoma as subject and source. Students will read and discuss works by Oklahoma writers such as Joy Harjo, Brandon Hobson, and Constance Squires, and will develop new works of their own to be shared in a supportive writing workshop format. Coursework will include instruction in the craft of fiction and creative nonfiction as well as exploration of Oklahoma-based fiction and nonfiction.

Rilla Askew - The Oklahoma Scholar-Leadership Enrichment Program

Rilla Askew

Rilla Askew is the author of four novels, a book of stories, and a collection of creative nonfiction, as well as plays, articles, and essays. Her first novel, The Mercy Seat was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Dublin IMPAC Prize, and received the Oklahoma Book Award and the Western Heritage Award in 1998. Her novel about the Tulsa Race Massacre, Fire in Beulah, received the American Book Award, the Myers Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights, and was selected as the centennial book for Oklahoma’s One Book One State program. Her novel Harpsong, published by the University of Oklahoma Press, received seven literary awards including the Oklahoma Book Award, the WILLA Award from Women Writing the West, the Violet Crown Award from the Writers League of Texas, and the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Her novel Kind of Kin, the story of a fractured family and small-town community at the vortex of Oklahoma’s immigration laws, was a finalist for the Spur Award from Western Writers of America, longlisted for the Dublin IMPAC Prize, and selected for Amarillo Reads in 2017. Askew’s collection of essays on race and place, Most American: Notes from a Wounded Place, was longlisted for the PEN/America Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay in 2018. She teaches creative writing at the University of Oklahoma.

Requirements to Remain in Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication

After direct admission, all incoming Freshman or transfer students must meet the following requirements to remain in Gaylord College:

  • Pass the Gaylord College Entrance Exams – Language Skills Test and Academic Integrity Test
  • Complete  JMC 1013  (Introduction to Media) with a grade of C or better;
  • Maintain a minimum combined retention grade point average of 2.50 on all work attempted, as well as a 2.50 on all major work.
  • Transfer Students must have a 2.50 combined retention grade point average to gain admission into the college.

Major Requirements

A maximum of 50 hours of Journalism and Mass Communication may be counted in the 120 hours required for graduation. No student will be awarded a BA in Journalism degree without completing at least 70 semester credit hours outside the College.

A grade of C or better is required in all Journalism and Mass Communication courses.

Attendance : Students who do not attend a JMC class or lab on the first day of classes may be dropped from the class or lab. Transfer Work: Students may transfer in a maximum of 12 credit hours of journalism and mass communication coursework prior to full admission to the Gaylord College. Once fully admitted to the college, students may petition the faculty to have an additional three (3) credit hours from an outside ACEJMC institution applied to their University of Oklahoma degree. A maximum of fifteen (15) credit hours of JMC transfer coursework may be applied to a degree. Individual Studies (e.g., courses titled “Independent Study”): A maximum of 12 total semester hours may be counted toward graduation. Senior Institution Hours: A minimum of 60 semester hours applied toward graduation must be earned at senior (4-year) institutions. Residency:

  • A minimum of 30 semester hours acceptable toward graduation must be earned in residence at OU, including at least 15 of the last 30 hours applied toward the degree.
  • At least 15 semester hours of upper-division major work must be completed in residence at OU.
  • OU correspondence courses are not considered resident credit.
  • Credits earned via examination are neither resident nor nonresident credit.

Application for Graduation: Students must apply for graduation during the term in which they complete their degree requirements in order to graduate in that term. Application forms are available in the Student Services Center, 2533 Gaylord Hall. The deadline for completion of all coursework to graduate in a particular term is the last day of classes in that term.

Summer 2024 Appointments

The Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday for summer hours beginning on Monday, June 3 and closing on Thursday, July 25 from 10:00am to 3:00pm in Wagner Hall, Room 280. Remote appointments are also available. We will be closed for appointments from Friday, May 10 until Monday, June 3, 2024.

Camp Jumpstart

When : Monday, August 4 through Wednesday, August 7, 2024

Who : graduate writers beginning the thesis/dissertation

Where : The Writing Center, Wagner Hall, Room 280, Norman Campus

Cost : free to OU students

Camp Jumpstart is a year-long program that begins with this multi-day writing camp for graduate students in the beginning stages of their thesis or dissertation writing process. This camp includes dedicated writing time, opportunities for feedback, and presentations on setting SMART goals, understanding the thesis or dissertation as a genre, managing writing anxiety, effective task management, program management systems, and effective library searches.

The rest of Camp Jumpstart includes coordinated appointments in the fall along with writing retreats for participants each semester. This program aims to provide structured support during the early phases of thesis/dissertation work.

Registration required. Check back over the summer for a registration link.

Write Start

When : Wednesdays & Thursdays, from June 5 - July 25, 2024

Who : all writers

Are you looking to set aside time each week to work on a writing project? Then join us weekly for Write Start. We'll provide the space and you bring your project to work on independently.

Note: No consultants will be available during Write Start, so if you're looking for feedback, take advantage of an appointment instead.

James Joyce Quarterly

The James Joyce Quarterly has proudly reigned as the premier journal for international Joyce studies for over 50 years. Each issue hosts an extensive range of critical and theoretical work dedicated to James Joyce's life, writing, and reception.
