Designing With Intention

Lydia T. Blanco: Tell us about your journey to and within the fashion industry.

Irving: I've always enjoyed fashion as an observer of fashion. I joined as a stylist and worked my way up. I graduated from Temple University with a degree in business and accounting, but I knew that was not my path. However, I wanted to expand my fashion knowledge; so I went on to the Fashion Institute of Technology. I wanted to study the industry and learn more about the fashion business. That pivot made room for my ultimate goal to create a lane for myself that incorporated both business and creativity that was dying to come out.

Blanco: What was it like breaking into the fashion industry - and how do you stay at the top of your craft as someone who has had multiple ventures within your industry?

Irving: It wasn't easy in the beginning. Having a brother in the league sometimes felt like I was experiencing a double-edged sword because some people didn’t take me as seriously as other stylists within the industry. I had to do my due diligence to form relationships and put the hours into my craft. There are a lot of details that go into building a look that I learned to respect and have admiration for. I was blessed to meet so many people willing to sit down and talk to me so that I could learn from them. That's the beauty of community and finding good-hearted people with different perspectives.

I stay on top of my game by practicing it as much as possible, whether by building looks, sketching, or traveling to meet new people and find inspiration.

The Mind Less Capsule Collection

Blanco: After establishing multiple fashion brands, what inspired the formation and launch of Mind Less?

Irving: Mind Less is a brand on which my brother and I have collaborated. The inspiration draws from how we both lead our lives. We need to lead from a space of clarity. Through Mind Less, we can create from a blank canvas, make the visions and ideas that come to life, and tell these different stories using our lives as inspiration.

Blanco: How long did it take to go from ideation to production - and then to the market?

Irving: It took about a year and a half. I'm a very intentional person, and I don't like to put anything out there without being detailed. Figuring out the name was the first part. My brother and I met, took out a poster board, and just wrote down words. It was such a beautiful and fun process. That's the main reason why I love collaborating with Kyrie. We've done this since we were kids. So, to do this in adulthood and respect each other's craft, we should value what we bring to the table as we do business and bring designs to life.

Blanco: How did you come up with the designs for Mind Less?

Irving: People are constantly on the go - and we wanted to pull from that as inspiration to create clothing to support that lifestyle. Our collections are all about the details and simplicity. We're intentional about where we draw inspiration from our roots and different styles across different cultures.

Blanco: Sometimes in business, there is a counter-narrative that often discourages people from going into business with family. However, there is also the other side, where families experience success. How has being in business with your brother helped you grow and shape yourself as a businesswoman?

Irving: As an observer of what my brother has gone through within his industry, I respect him tremendously. He is very empowering and speaks affirming words to me. We lean on each other for support and trust. As siblings and business partners, that trust and respect shape us and what we produce. His mission in life is to empower those around him. His support allows me to express myself and create freely.

Blanco: What have you learned about managing a team as you produce your visions?

Irving: It’s all about trust. Things don’t always work out with everyone all the time. Leaning into each other's strengths, honoring them, and finding people passionate about their work is essential. You can see it come across in our visuals and our quality of work. That's what helps move the business forward.

Blanco: What have you learned about yourself through looking within, as a businesswoman along this journey, and creating the Mind Less brand?

Irving: I learned about the beauty of time and connection - and leaning into yourself to see your capabilities. I have a deeper understanding of how precious time is from creating this collection while simultaneously preparing for the life-changing experience of becoming a mom.

Blanco: I am often impressed by how motherhood springs women into another level of knowledge of self and attention to detail. As a new mother who gave birth to a newborn and a business, what advice can you give women on a similar pursuit?

Irving: Take your time. There's no rush to come back. If you would like to honor your time to be a new mom and enjoy that, you should do that. Being a mother and in business is the best of two worlds in many different aspects. You become a new mom and this new woman. So, embrace that new woman that you become. Lean into her and trust yourself. Give yourself grace and time to embrace these new qualities you've developed.

The creative director of Natuzzi Italia is invigorating the brand’s DNA one project at a time.

PJ Natuzzi has always gone against the grain.

“My father used to call me ‘Bastian Contrario,’ which means that I was stimulated by doing the opposite of what people were asking me to do,” he admits. The forward-thinking son has since channeled this contrarian tendency in his role as Creative Director of Natuzzi Italia, the family’s furniture company. “Over time, I developed that into a natural attraction towards change, being an ‘element of disruption,’ people say.”

Disrupt he did when his tenure began in 2020: Natuzzi has driven the brand’s shift from furniture maker to Mediterranean lifestyle purveyor, expanding the Natuzzi Italia umbrella while maintaining a commitment to its roots as a family brand founded in the coastal city of Taranto. The transition wasn’t without its roadblocks, yet the upstart remained firm on his outlook. "I believe in looking at the environment around you and trying to improve it," he says. "Not feeling scared of making a change happen is something that I have in my DNA. I think my father had it, too."

As the company celebrates over six decades of excellence in luxury furnishings, this focus on legacy and longevity is precisely what’s pushed Natuzzi toward collaboration: Months into his tenure, he established the Circle Harmony Project to invite designers to guest spot with Natuzzi Italia, thus “mixing DNA,” as he sees it. Counting Andrea Steidl, Simone Bonanni, and Sabine Marcelis as previous collaborators, Natuzzi Italia released its latest Circle of Harmony creation—the Memoria sofa —just in time for New York Design Week.

Created with industrial designer Karim Rashid, who has originated everything from cosmetics to interiors to packaging,  the elliptical shape and smooth contours recall an elongated infinity symbol. It’s a striking silhouette, at once entirely Rashid’s calling card and wholly Natuzzi Italia’s relaxed elegance.

Collaborations like this are what give Natuzzi energy—he approaches every project with the emotions it will evoke top of mind. “I wonder how it is to work with some brands that are very stiff,” he observes. Health, too, is another concern on his agenda: Natuzzi Italia’s Comfortness collection uses micro-mobility technology to adjust the way people sit. “Healthy aging is something we're all keen on, and one of the major antagonists of healthy aging is sitting still. The micro-mobility feature is designed not to sit still.” It’s this sort of conscious innovation that is driving the creative director’s many projects—and driving traffic. 

“Every new collection, people come to me and ask, ‘So, who's the new designer? What's the next story?’” He’s already looking for his next collaborative partner, a process which he describes as a “hunt.” He’s headed to design weeks, fashion weeks, art fairs—wherever he may find a new strand of Natuzzi DNA. He laughs before concluding, “You don't know what you can find in the woods, right?”

World University of Design's Students Champion Sustainable Fashion at Delhi Times Fashion Week

New Delhi [India], May 31: In a vibrant celebration giving platform to creatives and sustainability, twenty-two talented students from the School of Fashion at World University of Design dazzled audiences at the Delhi Times Fashion Week recently. Held at the prestigious venue, The Grand Vasant Kunj, the event featured renowned designers and fashion labels including the iconic Narendra Kumar from Mumbai. The central theme of WUD’s showcase, “Sustainability in Fashion,” set the stage for a stunning presentation of upcycled secondhand garments. Embracing this ethos, students infused bold, contrasting colors and creative geometric shapes into their designs. Tasked with minimizing waste, they utilized at least 97 per cent of the chosen garment’s materials, aligning with the imperative for sustainable practices in the face of global challenges.

The result was a collection that captivated audiences and demonstrated the students’ keen sense of contemporary style. Attendees marveled at the innovative concept & the wear ability of finished garments, and applauded the students’ commitment to sustainable yet fashionable attire. Feedback from industry experts and fashion influencers was overwhelmingly positive.

Looking at the overwhelming response, Dr Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, World University of Design (WUD) commented, “I am thrilled to see the participation of 22 of our talented pre-final fashion students in Delhi Times Fashion Week. The showcased collection not only epitomizes creativity but also champions the cause of sustainability. At WUD, we believe in pushing the boundaries of fashion while advocating for responsible practices. Sustainability is an enduring trend. I am sure this initiative by WUD will inspire all fashion institutions to move towards sustainability in the coming days. Our presence here, amidst notable professional designers is inspiring.”

The event concluded with resounding applause, marking the students’ exceptional achievement under the guidance of Professor Devender Singh Kharb and his team. Speaking on the success of the event, Prof. Kharb highlighted the School of Fashion’s reputation for forward-thinking design and sustainability initiatives.

“We were thrilled to present the work of our third-year students. The School of Fashion at WUD has established itself as a pioneering design program, renowned for its focus on sustainability, cutting-edge technologies, and entrepreneurial spirit. Unlike traditional practices seen in other institutions, WUD prioritizes showcasing the innovative creations of our penultimate year students. The event concluded with enthusiastic applause, marking the students’ exceptional achievement. They not only met but exceeded expectations, leaving an indelible mark on the Delhi Times Fashion Week.
