Soapmaking was documented on clay tablets in ancient Babylon in approximately 2800 BC. The Egyptians bathed regularly and Eber’s Papyrus dated about 1500 BC described combining animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form soap-like material for treating skin diseases and for washing. The name soap supposedly came from Roman legend. Burnt animal sacrifices were made on Mount Sapo and the mixture of melted animal tallow and burnt ashes made their way to the banks of the Tiber River. This thick mixture applied to clothing enhanced the removal of dirt from laundry. The Romans were known for their famous baths and Galen the physician recommended soap both for medicinal and general bathing purposes. After the decline of Rome, poor hygiene and unsanitary living conditions contributed to the plagues of the Middle Ages. Gradually, soapmaker’s guilds appeared, with Italy, Spain, France and England becoming centers of soap manufacture. King James granted a monopoly to a soapmaker in England in 1622 for $100 000 a year (The Soap and Detergent Association, 1981). From that time forward, the desire for and use of soap has increased tremendously into modern times. As recently as 1989, riots broke out in the Soviet Union over the lack of soap and toilet paper.

Soaps and detergents are used frequently in our daily life. There is a significant difference between them where the soaps are produced from the natural products while the detergents are synthetic or man-made. The objectives of the experiment is to prepare soap and compare its properties to that of a synthetics detergent. The soap is prepared by heating the mixture of mineral oil, ethanol and sodium hydroxide until they become paste-like mixture before being cooled off in ice bath for 15 minutes and filtered using vacuum filtration apparatus. The filtered soap is then stored in vacuum chamber for one week to ensure the water is fully removed from the soap. The synthetics detergent used in the experiment is Dynamo. The pH of the soap and detergent is 11 and 8, respectively. Emulsification occurs only on the distilled water sample and not on detergent solution and soap solution sample. Soap produce precipitate if in contact with acidic water or hardness in water such as Ca2+, Mg2+ and Fe3+ ion as in the experiment but not the case for detergent. The hydrochloric acid needed to change the pH of the soap solutions to 3 is 10 drops of HCl while for detergent solution is 2 drops of HCl. Relative cleanliness for detergent solution, soap solution and detergent without dilution with distilled water are the most clean, clean and slightly clean, respectively. Detergent solution is more effective compared to soap solution. The objectives are successfully obtained, therefore the experiment is successfully done.

Total Fatty Matter (TFM) is one of the most important characteristics describing the quality of soaps. Higher TFM ensures that soaps are least harmful to the skin and do not cause dryness; in "bathing" bars. Less TFM means very harmful soap, that soap will grasp all the moisture present in the skin making it dry. The various total fatty matters of the soaps were determined according to how it is use in our everyday life. The bathing soaps with identical codes; BS001, BS002, BS003, BS004 and BS005 was determine to have 25.5925%, 35.2745%, 45.9120%, 88.3055% and 30.2067% total fatty matter respectively, comparing with the accepted standards only the soaps with identical code BS004 meet the minimum accepted standard and hence can be classified as grade three (3) soaps. The laundry soaps with identical codes; LS001, LS002, LS003, LS004 and LS005 total fatty matter content were 27.2939%, 30.0590%, 44.7193%, 32.9100% and 35.7595% respectively. The total fatty matter for the medicated soaps with identical codes; MS001, MS002, MS003, MS004 and MS005 were 56.1656%, 45.3020%, 45.4963%, 50.2323% and 43.5830% respectively and the total fatty matter of the toilet soaps with identical codes; TS001, TS002, TS003, TS004 and TS005 were 67.6253%, 72.9206%, 58.2573%, 42.4820% and 40.4052% respectively. From the result obtained from the analysis, it can be concluded that most of the soaps analyzed did not meet the standard and can therefore be classified as sub-standard soaps.

Soaps and detergents are widely used in our society. Soaps are the product of the reaction between a fat and sodium hydroxide: fat + 3NaOH → glycerine + 3 soap Soap is produced industrially in four basic steps. This article lists different steps because in the industrial processes described each of these is done over several process steps, but in principle it could be done in the three steps outlined here. Step 1-Saponification A mixture of tallow (animal fat) and coconut oil is mixed with sodium hydroxide and heated. The soap produced is the salt of a long chain carboxylic acid.
