Common courses include introduction to social work; human behavior and the environment; strategic planning for nonprofit organizations; couple and family therapy; and social work services for older adults.

Program Length

Online MSW programs usually take two years to complete, but bachelor of social work graduates with advanced standing can finish in one year. Other factors affecting the length of an MSW include number of transferable credits, credit for work or military experience,full- or part-time enrollment, and self-paced study or accelerated learning.

Field Placement

Field placements are a key component of an online MSW program. They provide the setting for students to gain hands-on experience under supervision with an organization, agency, or facility.

Online learners typically complete their field placements at a work site near their homes. The number of required hours corresponds to your state licensing board’s requirement, but totals at least 900 hours.

Prepare for Licensure

CSWE-accredited online MSW programs offer curriculums that adhere to state licensure requirements , preparing students to become licensed masters social workers or licensed clinical social workers. These programs also prepare graduates to pass the licensing examinations administered by the Association of Social Work Boards .

Accreditation ensures that online MSW programs include generalist and specialized practice competencies, and comply with equity and social justice guidelines, including the code of ethics created and maintained by the NASW.

What Can You Do With an MSW?

Online MSW program graduates can focus on generalist or clinical social work. They can also select from specialty areas that include children and families, healthcare, mental health, substance abuse, school social work, and policy and advocacy.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% increase in social worker jobs from 2021-2031. The agency projects a slightly higher increase of 11% for healthcare, mental health, and substance misuse social workers.

Careers With a Master’s in Social Work Degree

Licensed clinical social worker (lcsw).

LCSWs provide psychological counseling and therapy to individuals, families, and groups. They also assist patients with daily challenges like finding jobs, housing, and social services. LCSWs often work in clinics, hospitals, private practice, and rehabilitation centers.

Hospice Social Worker

Hospice social workers focus on palliative care for patients in their final stage of life. They work on healthcare teams and offer diagnostic assessments. They also help families make care decisions and funeral arrangements, assist with insurance claims and access to community resources, such as Meals on Wheels.

Substance Misuse Counselor

These social workers work in community clinics, government agencies, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers, helping patients overcome drug and alcohol addictions. They lead group and family counseling sessions, conduct one-on-one evaluations, and formulate personalized recovery plans. Substance misuse counselors may also lead support groups and collaborate with other healthcare providers.

Social Worker

Social workers provide non-clinical services, such as facilitating support groups and connecting patients with healthcare or mental healthcare providers. They also refer patients to social services, such as child welfare, domestic violence support, food stamps, job training, and legal resources.

Bereavement Coordinator

These professionals help terminally ill patients and their families and caregivers. They serve as guides through the grieving process and help with finding hospice care, making funeral arrangements, and arranging follow-up counseling for loved ones. Bereavement coordinators often work for healthcare organizations.

According to May 2023 Payscale data , MSW degree holders earn an average annual salary of $59,000. LCSWs make close to $63,000, medical social workers earn more than $60,000, and school social workers bring in just over $50,000.

Experience level also influences how much social workers earn . Mid-career (5-9 years) social workers earn 6% more than those beginning their careers. While experienced (10-19 years) social workers make 24% more in average salary.

Skills that can help social workers earn higher wages include home health/home care (40%), policy analysis (25%), and hospice care (11%). Social workers can also pursue salary increases through supervisory positions, advanced degrees, and location.

Why pursue an msw.

While some states license bachelor of social work graduates, many states only license those with an MSW. Not all states require licensure to practice, but an MSW is required for licensed clinical social workers and licensed master social workers. MSWs also provide a gateway to doctoral social work programs.

Is an online MSW worth it?

Online MSW programs accredited by the CSWE offer the same academic quality and professional preparation as on-campus programs. The only difference is that students attend class via distance learning. Online and on-campus students must complete field placements in person. Online students can potentially save money on commuting, parking, housing, and tuition.

What degree do most social workers need?

Baylor’s Master of Social Work (MSW) is unique among MSW online degree programs in that we prepare students to serve both individuals and communities with compassion and care, from one-on-one clinical practice to large, complex social justice issues. Our online students are supported by a community of peers and faculty that fosters meaningful group discussions with their cohort. With a Baylor MSW in hand, students are fully prepared with the right understanding, empathy, and clinical skills to go into the world and make a difference.

The Garland School of Social Work recognizes diverse expressions of faith and seeks to honor the role of spirituality as part of what holistically shapes a person, their family and community. Perhaps you are interested in social work because of the way your faith has motivated you or others? As part of Baylor’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program, students learn about the influence of these beliefs and values in the profession. We call this our 10th competency, adding to the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) required nine.

Our approach to practicum education also sets us apart. Our dedicated practicum team partners with online MSW students to secure internship placements on their behalf. You will work closely with our placement managers who will conduct outreach to identify and qualify your internship assignment. Baylor Online MSW Program Options 

Each program option will prepare you to graduate as a culturally responsive and competent social work professional who is ready to pursue licensure and promote meaningful change in the lives of vulnerable populations worldwide. 

Standard Program MSW students are students who hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. During this 58-credit hour program, students begin coursework by engaging in generalist coursework for the first 29 hours of the program. Students then move on to the specialized curriculum, choosing either the clinical or community practice specialization for the final 29 hours. Advanced Standing MSW students begin their advanced coursework by choosing either a clinical or community specialization. This program is a 30-credit program for students with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited college or university within the last five years. Choose a Specialization

Clinical Practice Specialization prepares students to evaluate and apply practice theories and methods of intervention as mental health professionals with individuals, families and groups in a variety of settings.

Community Practice Specialization prepares students to apply practice theories and methods of intervention with public and/or nonprofit organizations, communities, congregations and religiously affiliated agencies.

The fall cohort begins September 3, 2024, and the deadline to apply is  July 22, for the full- and part-time track options. NO GRE required.

The MSW online program is designed for recent graduates and professionals who want to serve and empower vulnerable populations and take an inclusive approach to helping clients. 

Applicants, regardless of track, also must have completed coursework in their bachelor’s program. We take a holistic approach to the admissions process and carefully review each individual application. Below are characteristics of a competitive applicant:  

• A 3.0 GPA or higher; however, GPA is considered along with all other application materials
• Effective written communication and critical thinking skills demonstrated through your essay(s)
• High-quality letters of recommendation, written by academic and professional references who can speak directly about your preparation for graduate school
• GRE scores are not required for admission

Your admissions counselor is available to give you a tour of the program, guide you through the application process, and answer any questions you may have. They can help you with financial aid, choosing a program track, and gathering application materials.  

Standard Online MSW Program Advanced Standing Online MSW Program

The Online MSW program upholds the same high level of collaboration and engagement available to on-campus students. Courses are delivered in the synchronous classroom format via Zoom. You will meet together each week with your instructor and classmates. Classes meet Tuesday - Thursday, from 3-9 p.m. (CST), and class times range from 90-120 mins. for each class you are enrolled in.

At Baylor, you'll find rigorous, immersive curriculum that you'll experience together with your cohort in our Zoom classroom alongside our diverse, world-class faculty.

The MSW online program starts three times per year — fall, spring and summer. The program accepts and reviews applications year-round on a rolling basis. Master of Social Work online

The online Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares students to effect positive change at the individual, community or macro level through weekly online classes and an innovative virtual and in-person fieldwork approach.

Alumni of our online MSW program are making a difference worldwide across a range of fields, including mental health, family counseling, and military and community advocacy. The online MSW program is available both full-time and part-time. You can earn your MSW online in 12 months through our accelerated Advanced Standing track if you have a bachelor’s in social work.

Program Overview

Traditional Program: 48 Units If you hold an undergraduate degree that is not in social work, you will complete the traditional MSW program. The program can be taken full-time or part-time.

Advanced Standing: 24 Units If you hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution, you may be eligible for the advanced standing program, which can also be completed full-time or part-time.

The Master of Social Work curriculum explores emerging needs in the field to prepare a new kind of social worker who can meet the demands of 21st-century society. The online MSW program at USC features a rigorous curriculum that is the same as that of the on-campus program. Courses are delivered online, taught by our award-winning faculty and designed to enable you to focus on the population that interests you most.

The MSW curriculum explores content relevant to today’s employers, expanding on the program’s historic strengths while emphasizing early intervention, prevention and wellness, leadership and effective collaboration, core competencies (evidence-based practices, evidence-informed interventions), and implications of new findings in neuroscience.

Practicum Education

The online MSW program prepares you with crucial hands-on experience to tackle today’s social work challenges. You will spend more than 1,000 hours completing practicum education.

• Virtual Practicum: Online group sessions that provide a clinical simulation with an actor portraying a client. Guided by an experienced professor and only required in the traditional MSW program.
• Community-Based Practicum Placement: Hands-on, in-person training with real clients under the guidance of a supervisory practitioner.

You will work with a coordinator to choose a placement site that’s right for you.

Licensure and Credentialing

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at USC is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and designed to help meet the eligibility requirements for the  California Board of Behavioral Sciences  (BBS) and  Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination to obtain licensure. The MSW program provides a pathway to licensure, but does not satisfy all requirements for licensure upon completion of the program.

Requirements for licensure, including levels of licensure, vary by state and students should review the  USC Licensure and Certifications  site for state-specific MSW course requirements and restrictions. Students interested in pursuing licensure should also contact the licensing board for the state in which they hope to become licensed to determine specific requirements for licensure, including any requirements that are beyond the scope of the MSW program.

Program Tracks

Students may select one of five optional tracks that introduce them to practice with a particular client population, setting or system. Tracks consist of six units of integrative practice and three units of integrative assessment and evaluation which can be completed within the existing 48-unit curriculum.

Adult Mental Health and Wellness The Adult Mental Health and Wellness curriculum explores human behavioral theory. Students will consider the role of neuroscience as it relates to the mind-brain-body system as well as family, culture and community.

Children, Youth and Families The Children, Youth and Families curriculum prepares social workers who can advocate for children and youth in the social environments in which they live and create service programs that support families of diverse backgrounds.

Social Change and Innovation The Social Change and Innovation curriculum focuses on social change and innovation in a global context. Students will explore evidence-based research in either business or community development by choosing classes that focus on either area of study.

School and Educational Settings

The School and Educational Settings curriculum is an opportunity to operate at all three levels of practice and address the needs of individual students, school communities and leadership.

Military Populations and Settings

The Military Populations and Settings curriculum explores evidence-based practices to helping those who have dedicated their lives to protecting ours.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of USC’s online Master of Social Work program will have completed the requisite education to prepare for a career as a clinical social worker. Graduates are responsible to research licensure requirements in the state they wish to practice. Graduates may pursue roles in a variety of settings and functions, including working with individuals, groups and families.

For individuals interested in careers in social work and human services, online Master of Social Work (MSW) programs offer the opportunity to earn their master’s in social work without having to commute to a college campus on a weekly basis or relocate for students who do not live in community distance to a campus-based program. In addition, online MSW programs enhance accessibility to program specializations that might not otherwise be available to students living in certain regions of the United States.

There are over 320 schools that offer CSWE-accredited MSW programs available in the United States, offering specializations in areas such as Clinical Social Work, Advanced Generalist Social Work, Child and Family Social Work, Community Practice and Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Social Change, Adult Mental Health, and many more. However, these programs are rather unevenly distributed throughout the country, and are generally concentrated in more metropolitan areas, with a few exceptions. For example, while California has 27 schools that have CSWE-accredited MSW programs, Nebraska and Rhode Island only have one each (there are eight states that only have one school that offers an MSW program). Accessibility of Online MSW Programs

The following map illustrates the location of all CSWE-accredited, campus-based MSW programs in the United States, along with a 20-mile radius around each school’s main campus. Before schools started offering online master’s in social work programs, students who lived outside the areas represented by the blue circles had to either commute long-distances to campus or relocate in order to attend a graduate social work program. Now, online MSW programs provide students with a third option to earn their degree, which includes completing their didactic courses online and their field education requirements in person at a local practicum site.

Instruction Methods for Online MSW Programs

MasterofSocialWork.com defines an online program as one that requires two or fewer visits to campus annually. Typically, online MSW programs use advanced learning management systems (LMS), which are software applications that allow students to take classes, complete assignments, consult instructors, and discuss course concepts with classmates within one cohesive academic platform. These systems typically support both synchronous and asynchronous instruction, which are the two main types of instruction methods used in online programs.

• Asynchronous instruction is defined as any instructional content or academic assignment that students can view or complete on their own time. Examples of asynchronous instruction include pre-recorded lectures, course readings, self-paced interactive learning modules, and discussions forums that students can contribute to on a weekly basis as their schedule permits.
• Synchronous instruction is defined as any course content or assignment that students must attend or complete in real-time. Examples of synchronous instruction include live video lectures, live online “breakout room” discussions, examinations that all online students must log in to complete simultaneously, and class presentations that students host live for their instructors and peers.

Technology Requirements for Online MSW Programs

Online MSW programs typically require that students have a working computer that has video and audio capabilities, as well as a strong and consistent internet connection. With the advent of advanced learning management systems, most online MSW programs support mobile capabilities, meaning that students can complete course modules, attend online lectures, complete assignments, and even contribute to chat discussions using a tablet or mobile smartphone.

When students enroll in an online MSW program, they typically create a student account within their program’s LMS that then allows them to access all program content, including lectures, assignments, and means of contacting instructors and classmates through one portal. LMSs are typically based in the cloud, which means that students do not have to install any specialized software in order to access their online MSW program’s course content and assignments. Common learning management systems used by online MSW programs include, but are not limited to, Zoom, Canvas, Blackboard, and Adobe Connect. Below is a brief description of these learning management systems.

• Zoom features high definition video for lectures, video breakout rooms for real-time discussions, and multi-device compatibility so that students can join class sessions from their computer, tablet or phone. It also supports synchronous and asynchronous assignment collaborations, such as digital white-boarding and real-time co-annotating. Zoom also enables lecture recording and transcription for students’ asynchronous review.
• Canvas is an open-API learning management system, which allows educators to integrate learning tools and features of their own into the platform, thereby customizing it for their specific students’ needs. Canvas has also partnered with numerous education partners that have allowed them access to interactive learning technologies and tools that instructors can use for their courses.
• Blackboard is an open-API learning management system that features real-time, high-definition video lectures, compatibility across multiple devices, and collaborative learning features. This educational platform enables synchronous and asynchronous student chat and virtual discussion rooms, interactive learning modules, and a media library where instructors can post videos and other content for students.
• Adobe Connect is a web conferencing and online education platform that incorporates video and audio features, screen-sharing, discussion forums, and document sharing to allow for collaborative learning experiences both in synchronous and asynchronous formats. This platform also enables quizzes, simulations, and breakout rooms to be incorporated into students’ learning experience.

In addition, many online MSW programs also offer remote faculty and staff support in the forms of online office hours, online tutoring/career counseling, and field education support. Students who are interested in online MSW programs should keep in mind that all CSWE-accredited MSW programs, regardless of course delivery format (campus, hybrid, or online) require students to complete their field education in-person at an approved regional site. Campus Visit Requirements for Online MSW Programs

Some online MSW programs require students to attend one or more campus intensives each year, during which they complete in-person learning activities and/or assessments, meet their instructors and classmates, and/or receive training for their field education experience. Campus visits are used to enhance the online learning experience and can be a valuable addition to an online program. Some students benefit greatly from these intensives, especially students who value in-person interactions with instructors and fellow classmates.

However, in general, students are expected to cover the costs of traveling to attend these campus intensives, and therefore prospective students should take these costs into account when deciding which online MSW program to attend. In addition, they do require travel and time away from personal and professional obligations (most campus intensive sessions last two to five days), which may not be ideal for some students. Therefore, students should weigh the benefits of these sessions with the added costs and time commitments before choosing a program that requires campus visits.

Curriculum Structure for Online MSW Programs

Online MSW programs are held to the same rigorous standards as their campus-based counterparts. Schools of social work generally have their online MSW programs parallel their campus-based MSW programs in terms of course content, curriculum structure, and specializations (though some programs may not offer all of their specializations in both delivery formats). In general, MSW programs are between 60 and 70 course credits, which students complete over two years of full-time study or three or more years of part-time study (depending on how many classes students take per term).

A traditional, full-time MSW program is comprised of foundational coursework (including a foundational field practicum) during the first year, and a specialized year during which students take concentration coursework and electives to build the specific skill sets they wish to apply to their job post-graduation. Below is a breakdown of how the course credits in an online MSW program may be divided:

• 21-24 course credits of foundational curriculum : During their foundational year students of online MSW programs typically cover topics such as human behavior in the social environment, human psychology, social welfare institutions, social work research, and foundational social work methods. They also complete a field practicum that gives them the opportunity to apply the concepts they learn in their classes to real work with clients in a professional setting. In addition, some programs may include classes in their core curriculum on issues that are central to social work practice, such as diversity and social justice, and cultural competence when working with different population groups.
• 18-21 course credits of specialization coursework : During students’ specialization coursework (sometimes referred to as their concentration coursework), they take more advanced classes that connect to their desired area of practice or research. For example, a student who specializes in Child and Family Social Work will generally take classes that train him or her to work with children, adolescents, and their families. On the other hand, a student who specializes in macro-level community development may take courses in program design and evaluation, family services, and/or social justice policy.
• 9-12 course credits of electives : Electives give students an opportunity to take classes in an interest that is outside of their chosen specialization but which is still relevant to their academic interests and career goals. For example, a social work student who specializes in Adult Mental Health and Wellness may want to take an elective in military social work, or medical social work in order to enhance his or her work with adult clients in these contexts.
• 12-16 course credits for field education : The course credits for field education are divided between two field practicums that students complete during their foundational and specialized years. Students’ first field practicum teaches them fundamental skills in social work practice and research, while their second year’s practicum is completed in a setting that is relevant to their desired area of work upon graduating.

Online MSW Program Specializations

During their first year, students also determine their specialization and discuss their choice with their academic advisor(s). Their selected specialization will dictate the classes they take in their second year and the site of their second year’s field practicum. Below are examples of online MSW program specializations that students may encounter:

• Clinical Social Work Practice : In this specialization, students learn the key principles and methods of clinical work with individual clients and small groups, including assessments and diagnoses, establishment of the client/therapist relationship, and modalities such as dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy.
• Adult Mental Health and Well-Being : In this specialization, students focus specifically on the clinical treatment of adults and the support of their well-being from early adulthood into old age. Classes that students may take in this concentration include evidence-based practice, clinical interventions, religion and faith in therapy, group psychotherapy, substance abuse, grief and loss, and geriatric social work.
• Child, Adolescent, and Family Social Work : This specialization prepares students to work with children and adolescents who are experiencing mental, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges. Students of this specialization also learn how to support children’s families and design interventions for students experiencing social, financial, or health-related hardships. Courses in this specialization may include human psychology across the lifespan, social work practice for families, school social work, and youth substance abuse.
• Substance Abuse and Addictions : This specialization prepares students to use clinical social work methods to help clients cope with and resolve addictions that are negatively impacting their well-being. Courses within this specialization may focus on harm reduction techniques, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, and trauma, anxiety, and depression’s connection to substance abuse.
• Community Practice and Administration : This macro-level social work specialization is for students who want to enact larger-scale social change through program development and leadership. Students learn how to design, implement, and evaluate programs that seek to address community-wide social challenges or injustices. Classes in this concentration may include program design, social work policy and advocacy, grant writing, outcomes assessments, program management and administration, and community mobilization.
• Social Change Leadership and Innovation : This macro-level social work specialization prepares students to enact change at the organizational and community levels using a combination of social work methods and entrepreneurial strategy. Students in this specialization may take classes in non-profit leadership and management, community mobilization, public affairs, corporate social responsibility, social work research, and program design and funding.
• Advanced Generalist Social Work : The advanced generalist specialization is intended for the social work student who wishes to study both micro and macro-level social work principles and methods. In general, students complete classes in both direct practice (clinical) social work and community leadership and social change. Students in this concentration often have more flexibility as to the courses they can choose once they complete their foundational coursework; classes that comprise an advanced generalist program may include social work practice with family systems, social policy advocacy and analysis, diagnosis and assessment, diversity and human rights, and clinical social work methods.

Full-Time Versus Part-Time Online MSW Programs

Many online MSW programs offer students both full-time and part-time curriculum options, due to the fact that many social work students may need to maintain jobs while they pursue their degree. While the number of course credits taken per term varies between programs and the type of academic calendar they use (e.g. semester system vs. quarter system vs. shorter four-, five-, or eight-week terms), in general, being enrolled full-time means taking 9-12 course credits on the quarter system, or 15-17 credits on the semester system. The number of credits required for full-time enrollment can also vary if the program has year-round enrollment with students also taking classes during the summer.

For part-time programs, students may take anywhere from 3 to 9 course credits per quarter, or 6-12 per semester. While a full-time program of study may take 24 months to complete, a part-time program may take 36 months or longer. Field Education in Online MSW Programs

An important consideration for students interested in an online MSW program is the fact that all such programs require students to complete their field education in person at a qualifying social work-related setting. In general, MSW programs require students to complete between 900 and 1200 hours of field practicum (the number of hours may differ depending on the program and students’ specialization). For traditional MSW programs, students complete a foundational field practicum in their first year, and a specialized practicum in their second year.

During the terms in which they are enrolled in field education, online MSW students are expected to devote between 16 and 20 hours per week to their practicums (however, for part-time students the weekly number of hours may be lower, depending on their program of study and their advisor’s approval). Students complete the majority of their field placement hours Monday through Friday during normal business hours when their field instructor is present. It is typically not common for students to be able to complete their hours on the weekend or at night, therefore, students who are working part-time while completing their MSW should take this into consideration and also notify their employers regarding their field education commitments.

MSW programs vary in terms of how they handle the matching of students to their field practicums: while some programs match students to practicum sites and supervisors in their region of residence, others require students to locate their own practicums while providing support as needed. Faculty Mentorship and Student Support in Online MSW Programs

As mentioned previously, online MSW programs utilize learning management systems to not only deliver course content, but also facilitate interactions between students and program faculty. Outside of class discussions and asynchronous or synchronous instruction, students can typically contact their professors by email with questions they have about course concepts. Depending on the program and their course instructor, students may also be able to chat with their professors via phone or video chat, and/or attend live supplemental discussion sections or office hours through their program’s LMS.

In addition to faculty mentorship, students of online MSW programs also generally have several sources of support, including academic advisors whom students can consult online, field education directors who can help students in their identification of ideal practicum sites, and tutoring and career counseling services. They typically also have access to library databases and librarian assistance, offices of financial aid, and other important campus resources.

Admissions Requirements for Online MSW Programs

Admissions requirements for online MSW programs are as rigorous as those of their campus-based counterparts. In general, online MSW programs require applicants to submit the following:

• A personal statement explaining the student’s personal and professional goals as they relate to social work, his or her experiences in the field, and how the online MSW program will help them realize their career aspirations.
• Transcripts of all undergraduate (and if applicable graduate) work. Some online MSW programs require students to have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Two to three letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources.
• A professional resume that shows a track record of interest in the social work field, human services, community well-being, social justice, or related areas.

Prospective students should note that online MSW admissions are selective and typically competitive, which means even students who meet the admission requirements are not guaranteed to be accepted into the program.

It is important for students who are considering out-of-state online MSW programs to understand that online programs must receive authorization from states to enroll online students who live in those states. As a result, while the majority of online MSW programs are authorized to accept students from any state in the United States, not all online MSW programs may accept students from all 50 states. Students who are interested in an online program should check with the admissions office of the program that interests them for the most up-to-date information regarding state authorizations.

Students interested in pursuing licensure in clinical social work post-graduation, should understand that social work licensing requirements vary by state and that state specific licensing boards determine those requirements independent of other states. Therefore, students considering an out-of-state program should review licensing requirements for their state of residence and speak with a program advisor to determine if the program’s curriculum will meet those requirements. It is possible that students may have to take specific electives or complete their education hours in specific settings to meet licensing requirements.

The Online MSW Program at Boston University School of Social Work offers an innovative part-time format with majors in Clinical Practice or Macro Practice and 3 track options, ensuring that each student’s graduate program is tailored to their academic and professional experience. Clinical Practice majors may also choose to minor in Macro Practice.

Students fulfill the requirements for the MSW degree by:

• Taking required and elective courses in a convenient online format, that includes both self-paced learning and a live component.
• Attending weekly required Live Classroom sessions.
• Completing 1 or 2 field internships (depending upon track) within or near their geographic areas.

The curriculum at BUSSW emphasizes diversity, ethics, populations-at-risk, and social and economic justice, which is integrated throughout foundation and advanced MSW courses.

Online Program Structure

The part-time Online MSW Program can typically be completed in 6–9 consecutive semesters, depending on the track. Courses are taken sequentially, most lasting for 7 weeks.

3 Options To Complete The MSW Degree:

• Traditional Track: Consists of 65 credits which can be completed in 3 years over 9 semesters (fall, spring, and summer). Students take foundation and advanced courses online, attend weekly required Live Classroom sessions held Sunday or Monday nights, and complete 2 field internships for a total of 1,200 hours in the field.
• Human Service Experience Track (HSE) : Open to applicants with a minimum of 2 years of full-time supervised human services experience. Consists of 65 credits which can be completed in 3 years over the course of 9 semesters (fall, spring, and summer). Students take foundation and advanced courses online, attend weekly required Live Classroom sessions held Sunday or Monday nights, and complete a single 1,000-hour field internship.
• Advanced Standing Track :  Open to applicants with an undergraduate social work degree from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The undergraduate social work degree must have been earned within 6 years of entry into the program. Consists of 43 credits (or 40 credits if the student passes the Research 1 Waiver Exam) which can be completed over 6 consecutive semesters (no additional transfer credits will be accepted toward the MSW degree). Students enroll in courses online, attend weekly required Live Classroom sessions held Sunday or Monday nights, and complete a single advanced 1,000-hour field internship .

Please note : If a student would like to change tracks, this must be done during the application phase and prior to the application deadline. Unfortunately, students cannot transfer to another campus (ex: Charles River Campus to Online Campus) to change tracks once they are enrolled in the program.

Field Education

Our Field Education team has extensive experience placing students in the geographic areas in which they live, throughout the U.S.

Field internship support for online students is done through a collaborative effort that ensures each student’s learning needs are met. Those who are currently working in the social work field may be able to complete one of their two internships at their place of employment, however, the internship must differ significantly from the student’s current position, with supervision provided by a different, qualified supervisor. Once a student is enrolled, our dedicated team works individually with each student to evaluate the most appropriate field placement options.

Please note that students are expected to complete the majority of their field internships during weekday business hours.  Some agencies require or are able to offer limited evening and/or weekend hours.

As a student enrolled in the Online MSW Program, you’ll receive the same support available to students in the On-Campus Program. Our online classes are small, with no more than 15 students per group. BU faculty members interact with their students using a user-friendly web-based learning portal. Class content incorporates online lectures, simulations, videos, audio, interactive animations, discussion boards, and weekly Live Classroom sessions.

Members of BUSSW are readily available and committed to providing our online students with a high-quality educational experience.

Online students at BUSSW access their courses through the Boston University Online Campus portal . Coursework can be accessed online anytime, day or night. Students also enroll in weekly, required Live Classroom sessions that are held for 1 to 1.5 hours a week on Sunday and Monday evenings. Students register for these sessions in advance. Eligibility

Applicants living within the 50 states at the time the program begins are eligible to enroll in the Online MSW Program. Those living in U.S. Territories, countries outside of the U.S., and military bases outside of the 50 states are ineligible.

Boston University allows students to enroll in online programs regardless of immigration status. However, online students are not eligible for F-1 immigration sponsorship through Boston University, and the ISSO does not require an admissions file for online students.

Master of Social Work Degree Program Details and Requirements

While UNC Charlotte’s MSW program does not require a background or undergraduate degree in social work (except for the Advanced Standing option), applicants who have experience in the human services field are favored.

Our MSW program is competitive, and not all applicants who meet the admissions criteria will be accepted. Applications are reviewed by the MSW Admissions Committee and are scored using an MSW Application Rating Rubric. Those applicants with the highest ratings are selected until all seats are filled. The waiting list is rank-ordered and offers of admission are made on a space-available basis. Applicants are notified no later than May 1.

Graduates of the MSW program may pursue state licensure or certification through the state board where the applicant intends to practice social work.

Minimum Admissions Criteria

• Applicants with below 3.0 GPA can still apply; however, the program is competitive. Those with undergraduate GPAs below 3.0 that are offered admission is rare and usually have other compelling evidence (e.g., - GPAs very
• close to 3.0, extensive work experience, earned master’s degree or graduate certificate in a related area with a 3.0 or higher).
• Three recommendations
• For non-native English language speakers: A minimum score of 83 on the Internet-based TOEFL or a minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required for admissions consideration.
• Describe why you want to become a master’s level social worker.
• Discuss how the MSW program at UNC Charlotte will help you achieve your career goals.

Advanced Standing Eligibility

Applicants ​are ​eligible ​to ​apply ​for Advanced ​Standing if ​they ​meet the minimum admissions criteria and​ one​ of ​the ​following​:

• In the final year of study from a social work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE)
• Earned BSW within the past 7 years from a social work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE)

Students complete 39 graduate credit hours, which includes 33 credit hours in the classroom and 6 credits in an approved field placement.

Our Integrative Social Work specialization is created for people like you who cannot wait to change the world. Our MSW provides an Advanced Generalist education with a specialization in Integrative Social Work practice. Integrative Social Work is the intentional use of a person in environment perspective that offers a comprehensive understanding of a client across all practice domains to implement the most effective intervention. It brings historical, cultural, and political perspectives and a critical understanding of difference and oppression to bear in understanding the person and environment, social problems, interventions, and possibilities for social justice-oriented action.

MSW coursework's designed to be accessible and customizable to meet students with varied interests and needs. Students may take courses full-time or part-time, fully in-person on campus in LA or completely online. Hybrid options (first year in person in LA or San Diego) and second-year online also are available. 

Foundational courses in assessment and clinical practice, theory, research, social policy, self-care and wellness, professional values, and ethics in complex decision-making. Specialized courses can be customized along tracks such as courses focused on military, adult health and wellness, children, youth and families, and schools and military. Students may also choose not to identify a track and take courses across tracks. Hands-on practicum education allows students to apply skills learned in class. Students may also choose to enhance their degree with additional specialized education with University certificates.  Certificates are offered within the School of Social Work and across programs at the University. 

This intensive program includes 1,200 hours of hands-on practicum education to practice and apply the skills you learn in class. After you complete this program, you will be prepared to find meaningful work that makes a difference.

Licensure and Credentialing

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at USC is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and designed to help meet the eligibility requirements for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) and Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination to obtain licensure. The MSW program provides a pathway to licensure, but does not satisfy all requirements for licensure upon completion of the program.

Requirements for licensure, including levels of licensure, vary by state and students should review the USC Licensure and Certifications site for state-specific MSW course requirements and restrictions. Students interested in pursuing licensure should also contact the licensing board for the state in which they hope to become licensed to determine specific requirements for licensure, including any requirements that are beyond the scope of the MSW program.

USC Housing Services offers a wide variety of housing options for graduate students, from residence halls to apartments. Most MSW students do not live in university housing since the Los Angeles area has numerous interesting communities in which to live, many within a reasonable commuting distance from USC. If you decide to apply for housing, we recommend that you meet the Priority Deadline for the MSW program so that you can receive your admission decision as early as possible — housing applications may only be submitted once you have been admitted to USC.

The Master of Social Work (Advanced Practice Leadership) degree program is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career based around improving society. Our online M.S.W. degree program is built on a liberal arts perspective. Two fully online tracks are available:

Mission Statement

The Tuskegee University's  College of Arts and Sciences Department of Social Work's online Master's of Social Work (MSW) program’s mission is to prepare students for advanced generalist practice with traumatized children, families, communities of color, immigrant communities, and other vulnerable populations. It will provide students with a well-rounded knowledge base from which to enter professional practice and field work experiences that prepares them to work with specialized client populations in diverse settings.

The program’s vision is for the next generation of social workers to diligently fight for social and environmental justice for vulnerable communities in Alabama and across the nation. This new generation of social workers will also be more aware of global social problems and global social work opportunities. It will also be the most diverse generation of advanced social work professionals produced. The new cohort will be recognized for their outstanding leadership, practice skills, ethics, and knowledge of research and technology. 

We believe, as the University’s founding principal, Booker T. Washington did, that, “Education is not what a person is able to hold in his head, so much as it is .... skill of hand, and strength of mind and heart; and we help you in these ways.”

The Tuskegee University Department of Social Work online MSW program is in pre-candidancy for additonal accreditation as a professional program by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) . The CSWE is a nonprofit national association representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952, this partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies, and private citizens is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation(CHEA) as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in this country.  

Memberships

The Department of Social Work at Tuskegee University is a member of the  International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) , which is the worldwide association of schools of social work, other tertiary-level social work educational programs, and social work educators. The IASSW promotes the development of social work education throughout the world, develops standards to enhance the quality of social work education, encourages international exchange, provides forums for sharing social work research and scholarship, and promotes human rights and social development through policy and advocacy activities. 

Tuskegee University Department of Social Work is a member of the Southeastern Telehealth Resource Center  that serves as a focal point for advancing the effective use of TeleHealth and support access to TeleHealth services in rural and underserved communities in the southeastern region of the United States. We have extensive TeleHealth experience and can provide services, resources and tools to both developing and operating programs. The Center's role is complementary to the activities of the telemedicine programs in the Southeast in that the SETRC provides the basis for widespread application of educational and clinical support services and technical advances that have been studied as well as validated at the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth (GPT) and its partner sites.

The Department of Social Work is a member of Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) , whose mission is to ensure that new and current health professionals are proficient in the competencies essential for patient-centered, community- and population-oriented, interprofessional, collaborative practice. To view IPECs strategic framework,  click here.

Students have the opportunity to join Phi Alpha Honor Society for social work, National Association of Social Work , National Association of Black Social Workers , and other Student Organizaitons , and the National Pan-hellenic Associations.

The goals of the Department of Social Work online masters clincial program at Tuskegee University are listed below and are a derivation of its mission:

• Educate students to become ethical, empathetic, and culturally competent professionals prepared to work with diverse individuals and communities
• Integrate cutting edge technology into the curriculum thereby furthering students’ comfort with technology
• Prepare students to deliver tele mental health services and integrate new technologies into their practice and advocacy work
• Prepare students to understand the effects of trauma on clients and work with traumatized populations using the latest evidence-based trauma interventions.
• Prepare student for social work practice in global settings, to understand global social policy and practice problems, and recognize the many opportunities to make change abroad.
• Provide a range of research and field study opportunities that further students’ knowledge  of global social work practice, disparities in health outcomes, effective work with children and families, work in healthcare settings, and practice with diverse people, families, and communities.

Tuskegee University has several partnerships with Schools of Law for a dual degree in law, J.D., LLM, along with a Law Ready program for undergraduate students to provide accelerated matriculation through law school at the graduate school level. The partnership with the School of Public Health offers a dual degree for the masters in Public Health upon matriculation of the masters of social work program. Interdisciplinary study is available with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agricultural and Nutrition Sciences at the University. National Student Exchange Program- Tuskegee University National Student Exchange (TUNSE) Program works with NSE member schools to provide opportunities for students to engage in off-campus experiential learning through community work and place-based educational programs. Acadeum Course Sharing Program-   Tuskegee University (TU) has partnered with Acadeum , a College Consortium that has a network of accredited colleges and universities that share online course offerings. Courses taken through Acadeum are considered institutional credit and impact the student's GPA and graduation requirements in the same way a TU course does. The course will appear on the student's TU transcript as a TU course. Students in the graduate program may customize their learning path experience by requesting to take an acadeum course for elective courses desired but not offered in the program or for additional credit hours for customization of their learning path. 

Signature Pedagogy of Social Work Education -- The Practicum & Internship Experience

Tuskegee University is located in Tuskegee, Alabama which is 40 miles east of the Alabama State Capital in Montgomery, Alabama. Although the University is located in a rural setting, the Social Work program has been designed to provide students with Advance Generalist and Clinical Practice opportunities. Students not only have the opportunity to perform their Practicum & Internship placements in Tuskegee, but partnerships have been developed with Social Services agencies domestic, abroad, and virtually from which they intern. Students get an opportunity to apply the Advanced Generalist and Clinical Practice skills in a host of settings to include but not limited to those such as Clinics, Hospitals, including the VA Hospitals, Schools, Nursing Homes, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Centers, Department of Corrections, Department of Family and Children Services, Federal and State Agencies, International and Local Community Organizations and Data Analysis. In these area of Practice, students use Advanced Generalist Social Work skills such as Engagement, Assessment, Evaluation and Termination. Recognizing that the context of practice is dynamic and  students provide direct practice at the Micro and Mezzo level notably, Individuals and Family or Groups. Students recognize that the Social Worker through their knowledge base as well as their years of experience will use their skill sets to obtain necessary resources from the Community. Social Workers will also use these resources to enhance their client's capacity for social functioning and create societal conditions that are favorable to their goals. This is the profession of Social Work.

Course Descriptions

The Department of Social Work MSW program partners with Universites, campus research centers, and local, state, federal, agencies to conduct behavioral science research and provide community service and outreach. Coming soon the  Community & Organization Development Engagement Research (CODER) Center to serve rural and vulnerable communities, groups, and organizations domestic and international through service and behavioral science research.

Online Distance Education

The Master of Social Work Online Option at CSUSB is called the Pathway Distance Education Program . The Pathway Distance Education Program shares the same mission and content as the on-campus programs offered by the School of Social Work and offers accredited, professional education to students who are unable to attend the main campus at CSUSB or any other 4-year university.

The Pathway Distance Education program offers an online option towards a Master Degree in Social Work (MSW) that can be completed in 3 years.  The 60 semester-unit program costs $650 per unit.  The total cost of the program is $39,000.

Additionally, the Pathway Distance Education Program offers the Title IV-E Public Child Welfare Stipend Program .  

The Pathway Distance Education program is rated highly both nationally and State wide :

• Social Work Guide  rates us as number 2 in California in California and number 5 in the nation.

Delivered Entirely Online

This program incorporates the same high standards and course workload expectations as the on-campus MSW program, but features the convenience of course delivery without the necessity of commuting to campus. Courses are offered online using the Blackboard. Most courses will also meet Monday and/or Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. (CST) via interactive video conferencing.

Additionally, students will complete a practicum/internship: Our agency partners request that you are available on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. You will need to complete approximately 15-16 hours per week over two semesters. If you are already employed in the human service field, it may be possible to complete your internship at your current place of employment if your internship duties and supervisor are different than your employment duties and supervisor.

Online Counseling Degree Programs: A comprehensive guide

From 2019 to 2022, the share of fully online learners more than doubled. 1 The popularity of online programs for all levels of education has significantly increased–those for clinical mental health counseling included. CACREP establishes, upholds, and updates criteria guaranteeing that students obtain a comprehensive, pertinent counselor education. Earning CACREP accreditation signifies that a mental health counseling program's curriculum adheres to professional standards and importantly, meets the prerequisites for state licensure.

Specializations in online counseling degrees

Online counseling programs offer a rich array of specializations, allowing students to tailor their education to their personal interests and career goals . After completing a series of foundational courses on topics like counseling theory , human development , and clinical counseling, focused pathways allow students to hone into the specialized skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen niche.

Bachelor of Social Work

The online BSW program benefits from strong faculty presence and a cohort structure, which naturally fosters peer-support and facilitates the learning process. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the SJC Social Work program through optional virtual meetings and events as well as the  Phi Alpha National Honor Society for Social Work  if eligible.

CSWE Accreditation

Accreditation of a baccalaureate or master’s social work program by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process.  An accredited program has sufficient resources to meet its mission and goals and the Board of Accreditation has verified that it demonstrates compliance with all sections of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

Accreditation applies to all program sites and program delivery methods of an accredited program. Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program.

Students are encouraged to verify  license eligibility in the state(s)  they plan to practice as a social worker.

Required courses for the  Bachelor of Social Work degree include human behavior, policy, research, practice, and field internships, as well as other closely aligned social science content. One course focuses on equipping social work practitioners with skills to assess and serve diverse populations, including those distinguished by race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental ability, age, and national origin.

Students will gain practical experience through two internships, including a full-year placement -- a process that is facilitated with the Field Placement Coordinator. The Field Placement Coordinator will work alongside the student to locate placements that are of interest to them and in a geographical location near the student’s place of residence. The College works with many types of agencies and organizations, including hospital systems, private non-profits, schools, drug rehabs, and other community agencies.

Many students explore declaring a minor in criminal justice, psychology, health administration, business, or theology. BSW students will work one-on-one with an academic advisor to select courses, stay on track, and navigate college resources.

Social Service Profession Minor The Social Service Profession minor is designed to augment majors in the helping profession like sociology, psychology or criminal justice.

“I did a lot of research before deciding on SJC’s online social work program. Of all of the CSWE accredited online programs that I looked into, SJC was the most affordable per credit tuition, didn’t require any on-campus commitments, and was wholly asynchronous. The fact that it is a Catholic based education was the cherry on top.”

Career moves

The social work major is a strong foundation for professional careers in various organizations including Child Welfare, Corrections, Health Care, Policy and Planning, Private Non-Profits, and non-governmental agencies (NGOs). According to the  United States Bureau of Labor Statistics  the profession is growing faster than most and the U.S. Government has loan forgiveness programs to help social workers with some of their  student loans. Individuals with a BSW are prepared for entry-level direct practice within the field. Most states will require licensure. Additional information on professional licensure can be obtained at the Association of Social Work Boards  and through the  State of Maine Board of Social Work Examiners.

What is SARA?

Saint Joseph's College of Maine has been approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements.

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement is an agreement among member states, districts and territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state. SARA is overseen by a National Council and administered by four regional education compacts. Maine’s Acting Education Commissioner, Bill Beardsley says, “SARA facilitates Maine’s interface with education opportunities across the country while bypassing the old case-by-case burdensome course approval system. Maine students benefit and state red tape is minimized with no loss of accountability. It is a state consortium approach we value.”
