Most students have experienced looking at their word count and thinking about how to reach the maximum limit without using filler content. This guide tackles that problem head-on with practical solutions and insights.

We’ll introduce you to plenty of useful techniques so you can increase your word count effortlessly and without compromising your essay’s quality.

How To Make Your Essay Longer With In-Depth Research

One of the first approaches you can use to make your essay longer is to research your points. Remember these pointers:

  • Conduct meticulous and thorough research on your essay’s topic to find new and overlooked information and insights.
  • Make sure you use insights that strengthen your argument further, and not just information to use as filler and is irrelevant.

Dig a little deeper, and you’ll surely find something you might have overlooked and can add to your paper.

Ways To Make Your Essay Longer With Elaboration

Another way to make your essay longer is to elaborate more. This means you should explore the points you argue in greater detail. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Break down your arguments : Detail each of your arguments and break them down into sub-points. For example, if you’re writing about sustainable energies, you can elaborate on the different types of sustainable energy sources that exist.
  • The power of descriptive language : By using descriptive language, you can lengthen your essay because you’re painting a more vivid picture of your topic. You’re adding more detail and nuance.
  • Use real-world examples : These can help add substance, and they will strengthen the validity of your argument.
  • Add background information : When adding new arguments to a topic, you can easily provide background information on whatever it is you want to add. This will help make your essay longer but can also add context, which will help the reader understand your point better.
  • Use anecdotes : If done right and added in the right places, sharing personal stories can make your essay better.

Using Counter Arguments In Your Essay

You can make an essay longer by using counterarguments. This strategy not only elongates your word count, it has the potential to increase your essay’s quality and persuasiveness.

Consider the following:

  • Find popular counter-views: Find common counterarguments against your thesis statement. If you know them, you’ll be better equipped to deconstruct and counter them to a larger paper's word count.
  • Show the strength of your view : Properly, you can introduce the strength of your perspective through the counterargument. For example, use strong evidence to oppose the view and then show why your stance deserves to be considered.

Using Quotations and Analysis

If you’re looking for other ways how to make a paper longer, you can use quotes. Quotations and further analysis is a great strategy to add more content to your essay. So, how exactly can you achieve this? Check these pointers out:

  • Choose relevant quotes : Of course, you’ll have to select quotations and transition words that are related to your topic. You want quotes that capture the core ideas of your argument. If you’re writing about the environment, you’d want to quote an expert environmentalist and so on.
  • Give analysis on your quotes : When you’ve presented a quotation, try providing analysis on it. Discuss its meaning and implications, and demonstrate why it backs up your claims.

A Blueprint For A Longer Essay

Seek Writing Help

Finding writing assistance from professionals can be an easy and effective strategy to make your essay longer. For example, you can send a “ do my essay ” request on Studyfy to get in touch with a professional writer at any time. Here are some tips to remember when seeking help.

  • Look for credibility : Be sure you’re getting writing help from reputable people. Take a look at their customer feedback and reputation to make sure they deliver what they promise.
  • Be clear with what you need : Make sure they know that you want a longer essay. Be clear with your instructions.
  • Guidance, not plagiarism : Use professional help for assistance, professional insights, and inspiration. You should use their work as a reference and foundation to build your writing and reach that desired word count.
  • Make use of expert feedback : Make sure you use the feedback that is given to you and practice it.

If you don’t have much time or energy, turning to writing professionals can be a great deal of help at desperate times of trying to fill out the minimum page count.

Using Complex Sentence Structures and Richer Vocabulary to Up Your Required Word Count

Another strategy you can use if you’re keen on knowing how to make your essays longer is enriching your essay with vocabulary and complex sentence structures. What does this mean? Check out these tips:

  • Employ varied language and use synonyms : You can avoid repeating your words by using synonyms to convey similar phrases and meanings. This will add length and keep your audience engaged. With that, try utilizing transition words, transitional phrases and relevant quotations to reach supporting evidence.
  • Use complex sentences : By using complex sentences and clauses in your writing, you can add more nuance to your writing and you can convey more insights. Vary your sentences from short to more detailed and lengthy. Balance this out with easy readability. Make sure that your essay is still easy to understand, regardless of a more nuanced writing style.

Taking Advantage of Examples and Case Studies when Essay Writing

If you want more words to make your essay longer, then using examples and case studies and integrating them into your essay is a great strategy to reach your word count goal.

These can strengthen your argument since they provide tangible evidence. They don’t solely make your essay longer. Here’s what you need to remember:

  • Select relevant examples and case studies : You should, of course, use examples that back up your arguments. Make sure they are recent examples as well. Imagine yourself writing on technology. If you’re using an example, you should use one from recent years.
  • Go into detail when demonstrating case studies : When you use a case study, you should go into detail and include the context, process, and outcomes. You will add length to your essay, but you will also simultaneously make it more nuanced and strengthen your points.

Using Visual Elements

If done effectively, you can make your writing more engaging. Still confused? Don’t forget you can pay for essay services on Studyfy right now for an extra hand. So, what can you use?

You can use graphs, charts, and even image s to strengthen your essay and make it longer. For example, when you’re finishing up a scientific essay, you can use graphs to showcase statistics and data.

Writing Detailed Intros and Conclusions

Since your introduction and conclusion are decisive elements in your essay, you can make do by increasing their length without compromising their strength and quality. Do keep these tips in mind:

  • For the introduction : Provide more context so that you can present your thesis in a stronger light. Write hints about what you’ll discuss in your body text.
  • For the conclusion : To make your conclusion longer, you can elaborate on the arguments you’ve developed over the body. You should present a “developed” and concluding version of those arguments. Reflect on what you’ve written without introducing new information. You can create a detailed and persuasive call to action to invite readers to explore the topic more.

Development

Make sure your sections are well organized, and every argument is fully developed. If they’re not, this might explain why you’re not reaching your word count limit. Need extra help? Don’t forget to take advantage of Studyfy’s custom writing service right now. Elaborate a point completely. Be meticulous and diligent with the development of your points.

How to Make an Essay Longer the Smart Way

Meeting an essay’s required page or word count can sometimes be a struggle, especially if you’re juggling multiple papers or exams. In a pinch, students often rely on tricks like increasing margin size or making their font slightly bigger. Though these tricks do increase page length, there are easier (and smarter) ways to write a longer, high-quality essay. Making a paper meet minimum word or page counts doesn’t have to be an agonizing process—you can add length while also adding clarity and depth.

Here are 10 tips on how you can write a longer and a smarter essay, even if the deadline is fast approaching:

Tip #1: Look Back at Your Prompt/Rubric/etc.

If you’ve been provided a comprehensive prompt or rubric for an essay, read it, and read it again. Think about the following:

  • Did you answer all of the questions in the prompt?
  • Did you provide supporting evidence to back up whatever claims you made?
  • Did you leave out any information that might increase the reader’s understanding of your argument?
  • Did you meet all requirements (besides length) for the paper?

If the answer isn’t a decisive “yes” to every question on this list, go back and revise.

Tip #2: Go Back Through Your Introduction and Conclusion

Often times, ideas evolve while writing a paper. If the first thing you wrote was the introduction, go back and reread the first paragraph. You might decide that you left out key information that aids the reader in understanding your argument. When looking back on the conclusion, make sure you’ve both summarized the main points within the essay and provided your reader with a solution to consider. If you don’t feel you’ve done this, go back through and revise the paper.

Tip #3: Have Someone Proofread Your Essay

Even if you’re short on time ask a friend, sibling, or parent to read through your paper, specifically noting any points they find confusing. Then, go back and revise the parts that were unclear, adding in more information to provide readers with further clarity. You have a more comprehensive understanding of what you’re writing about than your reader, so having someone else look over your paper can be a helpful way to ensure that you haven’t missed any important details.

Tip #4: Use Quotations

Chances are, you have already used quotes in your paper. Quotations are a great way to enhance your argument while also driving up a paper’s word count, but don’t add quotes just for the sake of doing so. If you’re short on words, read through your source materials again to see if you’ve missed any valuable quotes. You can also do a little more research to see if there are any other sources you can add to provide the reader with more evidence toward your argument. Longer quotes aren’t necessarily better, but if you’re really in a bind, you might want to lengthen some of the quotes that are already included.

Tip #5: Review Your Outline

Did you make an outline to plan the essay when you first started? Go back through that initial outline and make sure you’ve hit all of your intended points. It’s possible that you’ve left out an important piece of your argument that would both increase page count and make for a better essay.

Tip #6: Include More Transitional Phrases

Graders often look for traditional words linking sentences to each other, like “therefore,” “even though”, and “on the other hand.” Read through your essay and make sure the sentences flow smoothly into each other. If they don’t, go back and add in transitional phrases like the ones listed above. Your writing will be easier to read, and you’ll get closer to the minimum page requirement in the process.

Tip #7: Read Your Paper Out Loud

This might sound like a silly tip, but when you read your paper out loud, you become increasingly aware of any grammatical or syntactical issues. When you rephrase sentences to fix these, you might end up increasing the paper length a bit. In the process of reading out loud, you also might realize that you didn’t include sufficient details within a particular paragraph. If that’s the case, go back in and add more to increase length.

Tip #8: Take a Break From Your Essay

You’ve probably been staring at your computer screen for hours, hoping words will magically pop into your head. Take a break. Eat a snack, go for a walk, or talk to a friend on the phone. You’ll come back to the essay with a fresh perspective after some time away, and you might have new ideas after you’ve had time away from your paper.

Tip #9: Ask Your Instructor for Help

Most teachers, teaching assistants, and professors are willing to look over papers for students before the final submission date. If there is still time, ask if you can make an appointment to go over your paper or head over to office hours. Your instructor might offer tips on how to better answer the prompt, and this in turn may also increase the word count of the paper.

Tip #10: Use multiple examples to back up your argument

If you’ve only used one source or anecdote to explain a given point, find a second source to provide additional evidence for the reader. This method will help drive up a paper’s word count while also providing further support for your argument.

Although hitting a minimum page count can sometimes be challenging, you can do it the smart way by increasing the information you provide to the reader—there’s no reason to resort to tricks like increasing line spacing or font size. If you’re really in a bind at the last minute, you might want to break up some of your paragraphs. This increases length while also making text more manageable for a reader. But after going through the tips on this list, your paper should be adequate in length without you having to even consider spacing.

Wanna see how essay extender generator works in practice? Let's try it together. Imagine you're writing an argumentative essay on "Should all internships be paid?" We'll use our tool to add some words to a body paragraph and then develop an effective introduction.

All internships should be paid for the simple fact that interns are providing valuable work and skills to the company. It is unfair to expect young workers, who are often already struggling with student debt, to work for free. Interns are not just shadowing or observing; they actively contribute to the company's operations and success. By not compensating them, companies are perpetuating a cycle of unpaid labor and exploiting the enthusiasm and eagerness of young workers. Furthermore, paying interns shows that their time and contributions are valued, allowing them to gain practical experience without financial strain.

All internships should be paid for the simple fact that interns are providing valuable work and skills to the company. It is unfair to expect young workers, who are often already struggling with student debt, to work for free. Interns are not just shadowing or observing; they actively contribute to the company's operations and success. For example, a student who is completing an unpaid internship at a marketing firm may be responsible for creating social media content, conducting market research, and assisting with client meetings. These tasks require time, effort, and skills, and the intern should be compensated for their contributions. By not compensating them, companies are perpetuating a cycle of unpaid labor and exploiting the enthusiasm and eagerness of young workers. Moreover, unpaid internships often come with hidden costs that can be a significant burden for students. For instance, a student interning in a different city may have to cover transportation, housing, and other expenses on top of working for free. Furthermore, paying interns shows that their time and contributions are valued, allowing them to gain practical experience without financial strain. Companies should recognize the contributions interns bring to their organization and compensate them accordingly for their hard work.

Internships have become a common way for students to gain practical experience and valuable skills in their chosen field. However, the issue of whether these internships should be paid or not has sparked a debate. While some argue that unpaid internships provide valuable learning opportunities, others believe that all internships should be paid to ensure fair treatment of young workers. In this essay, we will explore why all internships should be paid, including the value that interns bring to organizations and the hidden costs of unpaid internships.

Check out these helpful tips to work on your academic writing skills and extend an essay manually.

  • Expand your arguments . Instead of simply stating your point, provide more detailed examples to support your ideas.
  • Use transitional phrases . Transition phrases such as "in addition," "furthermore," and "moreover" can help you connect your ideas and add more depth to your essay.
  • Include relevant statistics and data . Adding statistics and data from reliable sources can boost the credibility of your essay and help you expand your arguments.
  • Incorporate quotes . Including quotes from experts or authoritative individuals adds depth and weight to your essay.
  • Provide background information . If you feel that certain concepts need more explanation, you can provide background information to help the reader better understand your points.

Remember, when expanding on your arguments, it is essential to do so smartly. This means providing detailed explanations and relevant examples that add length to your essay and strengthen your points.

How to make an Essay Longer – 21 Easy Tips!

Just about all the advice on the first page of google about how to make a paper longer sucks. No, really. The tricks they suggest suck so bad I can’t believe how bad it sucks.

Most advice on how to make your essay longer tells you to do gimmicky things that will lose you marks.

how to make an essay longer

How do I know? Because I read it. And I (yes, I’m a professor) would instantly see through all those things.

Let me tell you: if you’re wasting time turning “15” into “fifteen” to get an extra 6 characters into your essay , increasing font size, or sticking fluffy adjectives into sentences to make your essay longer and increase word count, you’re stuffing up. You’re flushing marks down the drain.

So, here’s what you SHOULD do to make your essay longer.

How to Make an Essay Longer

1. make sure you included everything.

I can’t tell you how many of my students submit assignments and forget to include important points! Go back to your writing prompt . That’s the thing that you’re going to be graded on.

Go and check out exactly what your teacher asked you to write about. Did you write about every point they suggested?

2. Make Every Paragraph at least 4 Sentences

Scan over each paragraph. Do you have any paragraphs that are less than 4 sentences long? This is your low-hanging fruit for making your paper longer. You need to make these paragraphs longer and your page count will naturally increase.

The best paragraphs should be 4 – 7 sentences long .

If you’ve got a 1, 2 or 3 sentence paragraph, make sure you go back through it. What new points can you include to make your paragraph better? Maybe you can:

  • Add a sentence at the start of the paragraph explaining what the paragraph is about;
  • Add a sentence giving a real-life example of the points you’re trying to make
  • Add a sentence giving an explanation of your points.

Or, you can try adding points explaining:

  • Why the thing is true;
  • Where the thing happened;
  • How the thing happened;
  • When the thing happened.

3. Define your Terms

Have you written a paragraph defining your key terms? If you’re writing an essay on modernism, write a paragraph defining modernism. If your essay is about education , write a paragraph giving a brief history of education. This will make your paper better – and longer!

You should have a paragraph or two right after your introduction defining and explaining what your topic is!

Now, if you are going to provide a definition for a term in college or university level writing , you need to read this article . In it, I show you how to write a full paragraph that defines a term in the right way using a research paper, not a dictionary!.

4. Get new Ideas from your Class Handouts

Below are the class handouts that you should go back through to add new ideas. They’re your most important sources. Go through all these sources and try to take down and more key points you can add:

  • Handouts or worksheets in class?
  • Readings or articles that they asked you to read?
  • Lecture slides?

6. Get new Ideas from Friends

You will have many classmates working on the same essay as you. What ideas have your friends come up with? See if you can find out. You want it to seem like you’re working to help each other out. You don’t want to be a sponge, taking from them and not giving back. Help each other out so you both get better marks. I recommend being strategic about this:

  • Offer to look over each others’ work and give suggestions;
  • Trade key points in bullet point format;
  • Brainstorm together to create a master list of key ideas.

8. Get new Ideas from Blogs

There are websites online about just about every topic that you can possibly imagine. That includes the topic you’re writing your essay on!

Let me ask you a question: Why would you waste your time trying to add padding to old sentences to increase your word count when you can write new ones that will win more marks?

It’s really so simple – google your essay topic or question and see what comes up. What have other people said on the topic? What ideas can you grab from others and use for yourself? You can also get new ideas from Google Scholar, which can provide you with a free to access research paper that will give you ideas as well.

12. Use the Keep Writing Website

Keep Writing is a website where you can write your essay. But, it won’t let you delete anything. So you have to just keep on typing. This means you can just write ideas that roll off the top of your head. I gave this website a go to write this article you’re reading right now and it really did help me just write in a way that flowed nicely and added to my page count quickly. I must admit, after using the website, I copied the text and did some edits. But by that point I had a ton of words in there – more than enough – and I could shorten the essay by deleting the words that weren’t so good. I ended up having the opposite problem – too many words!

13. Include one new Example in Each Paragraph

Another thing you can do is go through each and every paragraph and add one more example and some supporting evidence. Even if you’ve included one example in each paragraph, that’s okay. You can still add more examples. In fact, teachers love to see examples and supporting evidence.

Good examples are what separates good and bad students.

Teachers love to see examples because you can only give examples if you understand the topic. So, when we see examples we go “Yes! You Got It! You understand it!”

16. Don’t add Pointless Words!

‘Padding’ is what we call it when you stick extra words in a sentence just to increase your word count. I’ve taken a sentence from earlier in this post and I’m going to show you the sentence as it is, then show it to you with padding.

Here’s the original:

“You’re going to need some new points to add to your essay. You should not try to make your sentences you’ve already written longer. You shouldn’t be trying to add in fluffy new words or saying things in a longer way.”

Here’s the padding:

“You’re going to need some new points to actually add to your essay , which actually is quite significant . You should not actually try to generally make your sentences you’ve already written longer , generally contrary to popular belief . You shouldn’t be trying to generally add in fluffy new words or saying things in a longer way , which is fairly significant. ”

Your teacher is going to read this and think “This student is a terrible writer.” And you’ll lose a ton of marks.

17. Don’t Change the Formatting

Increasing the line spacing, font size or character spacing will just make your paper worse. You should have ONE space between each word. Your line spacing should either be 2.0 or 1.5 spacing. That’s it. Those are your options. Stick to normal margins in Microsoft Word You should use font size 12. If you artificially change any of this, your teacher will see through it and grade you down .

Final Thoughts

Making an essay longer needs to be done in a way that will get you marks. I can’t believe that there are websites ranking high on google that recommend tricks like “make the space between lines bigger” and “increase your margins”.

If a student did that in my class, I’d fail them instantly. There are smarter and better ways to do it – whether you’re writing a grade 7 essay or dissertation chapter! Do it the right way and you’ll grow your marks and be on the way to success.

You are writing a paper and the deadline is approaching, but you are nowhere near the page limit. Many students find themselves in this position. Luckily for you, you can lengthen your paper by using a few tricks. Increasing the font size, adding a lengthy header, and manipulating the spacing between lines are just a few strategies you can use to make your essay appear longer. However, be aware that breaking your teacher’s guidelines may result in a lower grade.

Playing with the Font

Step 1 Choose a slightly larger font.

  • Don’t pick a very large font like Arial Black or Lucida Handwriting. Your teacher will notice that you are trying to make your essay longer by choosing a larger font.

Step 2 Adjust the font size.

Manipulating Spacing and Margins

Step 1 Increase the spacing between lines.

  • If the increase is too noticeable, then try 1.15 or 1.1 instead.
  • Because all documents are left justified, avoid increasing the left margin. Adjusting the left margin will produce a noticeable change that your teacher will detect.

Step 3 Increase the bottom margin by a quarter.

Adjusting the Header and Footer

Step 1 Lengthen your header.

Expanding the Content

Step 1 Spell out numbers less than ten.

  • Additionally, if you are quoting or paraphrasing research or literature, make sure to cite it properly. Citations can add extra length to a paper as well.

Step 5 Ensure that each paragraph has a topic and a concluding sentence.

  • Expand your introductory paragraph with an attention-getting statement to hook the reader in.

Step 6 Be as descriptive as possible.

  • However, try to avoid being descriptive when it is unnecessary since this may cause your paper to appear embellished or sound verbose.

Step 7 Draw out your conclusion.

To make an essay appear longer than it is, pick a font that's slightly larger than Times New Roman, like Arial, Courier New, or Cambria. If you're required to use 12-point font, try increase the font to 12.1 or 12.2 to gain some extra length without the font looking noticeably larger. Then, press on Control and the F key at the same time to activate the find and replace function, and replace all of the commas and periods with 14-point font. If the essay still isn't long enough, increase the line spacing by 0.1 or 0.2 and make the right margin 0.1-0.2 inches larger. 21 Helpful and Easy Tips to Make an Essay Longer

Bookman Old Style > Times New Roman.

21 tricks to make an essay longer

When you're writing a school paper after researching and typing for what feels like ages, but you still haven't reached your teacher's required page count, it's normal to feel frustrated. Maybe you get a little creative and play Microsoft Word gymnastics with different fonts and spacing, or become super expressive with your descriptions. There's also a chance you missed something on the assignment rubric, or overlooked the opportunity to include more quotes from trusted sources. You might even be able to load up on a few more examples for your argument, easily boosting the word count with additional research. Still a couple pages behind the limit? Don't worry. Below, we have over 20 tips to help you hit that page requirement.

1. Make sure you included everything on the rubric. If you forgot a whole section focusing on the counter argument, that could be the reason why your paper is a couple pages shorter than needed.

2. Load up on transitional phrases. Your paper isn't long enough, therefore it may be necessary to add some transitional phrases because they take up space. On the other hand , this could make your paper really wordy, however , it may be necessary. See what I did there?

3. Spell out your numbers. There are four editorial styles — AP, APA, MLA, and Chicago. Each one has a different rule for spelling out numbers, which can work out in your favor. For instance, in APA, you write out all numbers under 10. So a one-character "7" becomes a five-character "seven." In MLA, you spell out all numbers at the beginning of a sentence, and all simple numbers (those that are one or two words). Make sure to check the assignment rubric to see what style your paper should be written in!

4. Ditch the contractions. Honestly, you probably should not even be using contractions in a formal essay, so if you are filling up your paper with "don't," "won't," and "can't," switch them out for "do not," "will not," and "cannot."

5. Use numerous examples. Make sure to do extensive research on your essay topic and come up with at least 2-3 examples for every argument presented. One example might seem like enough, but adding a couple more points improves your paper and boosts its word count.

6. Add quotes. Including quotes, whether they be from a book, news article, or trusted source, helps strengthen and validate the point you're making in a paper. But you can't just drop a quotation without context. Introducing, writing out, and properly unpacking a quote can add value — and length — to your essay.

7. Start getting really descriptive about everything. How illustrative can you get about the evolution of electricity, you ask? Well, the answer is: Very. The howling wind gushed passed Benjamin Franklin at 30 miles per hour on that cold, rainy night, pulling the string of his kite taught as it fought to stay in the sky and sent his grey hair flying up in the sky like silvery wisps.

8. Try to make your header longer. If possible, of course. Some teachers clearly state what information needs to be included in the header. But if there's no guideline, add what you can within reason — I'm not sure your teacher is going to appreciate your TikTok or Insta handle listed on the page.

9. Have someone proofread. Getting another pair of eyes to read your paper might reveal some areas in need of work. Maybe you need to elaborate a bit more on a certain argument, or include a quote to strengthen an example.

10. Revisit your introduction paragraph. Sometimes, an introduction is easiest to write after the paper has been written. Having already presented and thoroughly discussed the argument in the essay's body paragraphs, you have a more concrete understanding of what direction the paper takes. There might be some information or ideas you can add into the intro, to better set up the paper's points.

11. Make your spacing larger. Your teacher probably won't be able to tell the difference between double spacing and 2.5 spacing. *fingers crossed*

12 . While you're at it, expand the spacing between the characters. Yes, I'm talking between each and every letter.

13. Raise the font size from 12pt to 12.5pt. Nobody has to know!

14. Make all periods and commas 14pt. It sounds tedious, but simply command-f and search for the period, that way you can change all of them at once.

15. Put extra space around your (super long and bolded) title. It needs some space to shine and breathe, obvs.

16. Change the font. You can't get too crazy or else your teacher will call you out, so you stick with something super similar to Times New Roman, but slightly bigger, like Bookman Old Style. However some teachers specify a certain font in the paper's assignment requirements — in the case, don't try to switch things up.

17. Reverse outline. After you've finished penning your essay, read it through and write an outline on what you have written so far. This strategy can reveal some paragraphs in need of further development. If you notice one super long paragraph, try breaking the ideas down into separate paragraphs. This might bump the page count up a bit, and give you the opportunity to include a few more transition sentences.

18. Make your margins bigger. You have to be careful about the left and right margins, and the top can be tricky. But the bottom margin, you can practically make it as big as you want. And then you can...

19. Add a fancy footer with page numbers. Obviously (hopefully), your teacher will appreciate your attention to detail and presentation.

20. Add a header with the title of your paper to every single page. Just in case your teacher forgets what your paper is about. You only want to help.

21. Make a separate cover page. Technically, the rubric didn't say it couldn't count as page one.

How To Make A TikTok 60 Seconds & Longer

' src=

It only takes a few moments to get to the top of the TikTok charts , just a few moments of video time can explode in popularity and make you the next big viral meme .

One of the best features of TikTok is its pretty robust set of video editing tools.

The tools can be used to cut and splice videos however you want.

The most successful videos tend to fall right in the 15-second mark.

But, you have a lot of flexibility besides that.

Finding the right video length is the key to getting a lot of attention on your channel.

Depending on what you do on your page, longer or shorter videos may be a better choice.

How to Make a 60 Second TikTok Video

The default setting of TikTok is to record for 15 seconds.

That used to be the maximum limit, but TikTok recently changed things.

Now you can make videos up to 60 seconds long.

That is a lot longer than Snapchat and Instagram videos.

There are 3 main ways you can make a Tik Tok 60 seconds long.

1. Swipe Near The Bottom

Here is how to change the length of your video

  • First, make sure you have the most recent TikTok update (v.16.5.1)
  • Hit the  + button on the main toolbar
  • Swipe the bar on the bottom from ’15’ to ’60’

You can then start recording by pressing the red circle.

Now your TikTok video will record for a maximum of 60 seconds.

Obviously, you can record for less time than this.

tik tok change time

This method just changes the limit from 15 to 60 seconds, you can press the record button again to stop recording at whatever time you want.

2. Use the Stopwatch Icon

The previous method is not your only option.

You can also define exactly how long the video records for, right down to the tenth of a second.

  • Press the  + button to create a video.
  • On the right-hand column, press the stopwatch icon
  • Drag the bar to the appropriate video time
  • Press  Start countdown once you have the time set

tik tok video length 2

This method allows you to set exactly how long you want to record.

The recording time slider is really useful if you want an exact video length and don’t want to worry about pressing the ‘Record” button again to stop the video.

tik tok video length 3

3. Upload a Longer Video

There is one other method to make a TikTok 60 seconds or longer.

With this method, you upload a video you shot on an app other than TikTok.

This particular method is unique because you can actually upload videos  longer than 60 seconds.

The previous 2 methods had 60-second maximum limits.

Here is how to upload a video to TikTok:

  • Press the  + button on the dashboard to create a new video
  • Click ‘Upload’ next to the ‘Record’ button

You will then be prompted to select a video.

Highlight the video that you want and click the red ‘Next’ button in the bottom right corner.

You can actually select multiple videos and splice them together in the next part.

tik tok video length 5

You will then be able to cut the video to the desired length.

This feature uses the same slider mechanisms as the previous method.

Once you have the right length set, hit the red ‘Next’ button in the top right corner.

tik tok video length 4

Once you cut the video time, you can add special effects and other filters before you post, just like you would for a normal video.

Can I Make a Video Longer than 60 Seconds?

The first two methods can only make TikToks up to 60 seconds long.

If you record your video using the TikTok app then you will only be able to record for 60 seconds.

However, if you upload a video from another source, then the video can be longer than 60 seconds long.

Technically, there is no time limit to how long an uploaded video can be, as long as it does not exceed the allotted file size for TikTok videos.

You can also make ‘videos’ longer than 60 seconds by creating multiple TikToks that follow after one another.

Technically, this is not a single video but multiple posts placed consecutively.

However, if you watch them in order all in one go, it’s kind of like watching a single longer video.

TikTok Video Limits

As we said earlier, you can upload a video of whatever length you want, provided it does not exceed the maximum file limit.

Here are some quick specs for TikTok video limitations :

  • File Size:  Videos can be up to 287 MB for iOS devices and 72 MB for Android. Ads can be up to 500 MB.
  • Orientation:  TikTok is designed for showcasing vertical video, but you can change it to horizontal if you want.
  • Dimensions : TikTok can handle up to standard HD dimensions (1080 x 1920)
  • Aspect Ratio : TikTok videos are normally formatted in standard smartphone aspect ratio (9:16). You can also make 1:1 videos but these are less common and won’t fir the entire screen.
  • File type:  User can upload .mp4 and .mov file types. Ads support .avi and .gif files

Is There a Minimum TikTok Video Length?

Yes, there is a minimum length for TikTok videos. TikTok videos can be as short as 3 seconds long .

If you try to record and upload a video for less than 3 seconds, you will get a message asking you to record a longer video.

tik tok video length 6

Music Limitations

One of the more unique features of TikTok is that it allows you to set your videos to music directly in the app.

There is one problem here though: Most of the time, you can only choose a clip of the song, not the entire thing.

Generally, the longest music clips you can find are 60 seconds long or less.

That means if you want to make a video 60 seconds or longer, then you won’t be able to add music to the whole thing using the TikTok app.

Can I Use a Third-Party App to Make TikTok Videos?

Yes, you can make a video with a third-party app and put it on TikTok .

First, create and edit the video in whatever app you want.

Next, all you have to do is upload the video to your TikTok page (see method #3).

You can then set the time of the video and post it as normal.

Since the uploaded video is from another app, it will have all your edits and effects.

Here is a nifty list of some of the best video editing apps for TikTok .

What Is the Ideal TikTok Length?

So you are probably wondering:  What is the perfect length for a TikTok?

That is a tough question to answer.

TikTok does not publish official video stats so there is little to no hard data on video lengths and views.

We did find some sources though.

According to this website , based on data from the top 100 videos of 2019, here are some interesting stats about TikTok video lengths:

  • The average length of the top 100 videos was a comfortable 15.6 seconds
  • 80% of all the videos were between 11-20 seconds
  • 60% of the top videos were under 20 seconds
  • Only 2% of the top videos were a full 60 seconds
  • Only about 8% of the most popular videos were between 0-10 seconds.

So if we are just going by the data here, it seems that 15-16 seconds is the perfect length for a TikTok.

This actually fits what we know about human attention spans.

According to marketing research , the average adult attention span on the internet is about 8-12 seconds.

In fact, videos longer than 60 seconds have a nearly 50% abandon rate.

That means 1 out of 2 viewers won’t make it through a full 60-second video.

Now in full transparency, these stats were observed specifically for marketing videos, not necessarily just random videos on TikTok.

The actual stats for non-marketing videos could be different.

It could also be true that different  kinds  of videos have different optimal lengths.

For example, it’s plausible to think that dance videos can be a bit longer than sketch or comedy videos.

Let’s recap what we covered really quickly.

There are 3 major methods to make a TikTok 60 seconds or longer.

  • You can swipe near the bottom of the screen and change the default timer from 15 to 60 seconds
  • If you press the stopwatch icon on the right-hand side you can set the exact video length you want using the slider
  • You can upload a video longer than 60 seconds that you recorded with another app

So there you have it: a comprehensive guide on how to make TikTok videos 60 seconds or longer.

To be honest, most people on the app do not use the entire 60-second allotment as people’s attention span is just too short.

However, TikTok gives some good options if you want to try your hand at a longer video.

Prove you're human, which is bigger, 2 or 8?

TikTok is testing 60-minute videos, which could be a big threat to YouTube

  • TikTok is testing 60-minute videos, challenging YouTube's long-form content domain.
  • TikTok has gradually increased its maximum video length to 10 minutes for all users.
  • Longer videos may shift viewership from streaming services such as YouTube.

Insider Today

TikTok is giving some users the option to upload 60-minute videos to the platform. That could spell trouble for YouTube and other streaming giants.

The pilot was first publicly spotted by the social-media analyst Matt Navarra . TikTok confirmed the feature to TechCrunch on Thursday.

It's unclear which regions the update is available in and whether it will be accessible to more users. The company told TechCrunch it didn't have immediate plans to make the function widely available.

Related stories

The update is the latest effort by the Chinese-owned social-media platform to expand its product offerings as user growth slows . When it first launched, the platform allowed creators to post only 60-second videos. The limit is now 10 minutes for all users and 15 for some creators. The TikTok competitors Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts offer similar upload lengths.

The test would put TikTok in the same weight class as YouTube. It would let content creators upload videos that require longer durations, such as in-depth tutorials or family and college vlogs , which are popular on YouTube.

YouTube beats TikTok in terms of overall users in the US. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted last year, 83% of the US adults surveyed said they used YouTube, while 33% said they used TikTok. Among respondents ages 18 to 29, 62% told Pew they used TikTok, but 93% said they used YouTube.

But TikTok is ahead of YouTube by minutes watched: Last year, Business Insider's sister company, eMarketer , predicted that in 2024, adult TikTok users would average 55 minutes a day on the platform — five minutes more than YouTube's average.

"Because of TikTok's shorter content, the platform risks users discovering clipped content and leaving the platform to watch the full version on YouTube," the eMarketer analyst Sara Lebow wrote in December. "Increasing video length could prevent a user from watching half of a video essay on TikTok and finishing the content on YouTube."

Last week, BI reported that Google leaders were encouraging employees who sold ads to capitalize on the possibility of a US TikTok ban by engaging in "thoughtful conversation" with clients about the ban.

TikTok didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

The longer video feature may also threaten other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. TikTok has a vast library of unofficially uploaded short clips from popular television shows and movies, which users binge-watch to see the show in full. Access to longer videos of shows may make this activity more commonplace.

Television networks are tapping into TikTok, too. Last year, the streaming platform Peacock uploaded a pilot episode of its comedy show "Killing It" to TikTok. The episode, which was uploaded in five parts, received millions of views. A longer video duration would mean episodes can be uploaded in one go, and viewership may shift from streaming services to TikTok.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.

How to Make Longer TikToks: 6 Tips to Nail the New Max Video Length

Two women look at phone screen with orange sunglasses on

@noriharewood

TikTok played an undeniably colossal role in the rise in popularity of short form videos, and forcing Creators to stick to a short time limit really drove creativity. But now, TikTok has changed its maximum video length from 3 minutes to a whopping 10 whole minutes.

Some people have pushed back against the change, arguing that 10-minute videos belong on YouTube, but we think it’s a great opportunity for Creators to mix up their content on TikTok and start branching out from short, snappy videos to longer, more thought out content.

How to make longer TikToks

Make sure you have access to the new feature.

• Open the TikTok app on your phone

• Click the + sign at the bottom of the screen to open the camera

• Above the record button, you should be able to swipe across the different time limits to see if you have the 10-minute option.

If you don’t see it, update your app via the App Store to make sure you’ve got the latest version. Still not there? Don’t worry! The feature is being rolled out in phases, so not everyone has access just yet — but it’ll hit your account soon.

how-to-make-longer-tiktoks-1

Start putting together your video

It works just like the shorter video length you’re used to, but you’ve obviously got more time to work with. You can record a total length of 10 minutes directly in the app, starting and stopping as needed. Or upload multiple video clips and images from your camera roll if you’ve pre-recorded your content.

Find inspo: Here’s 6 ideas for making long-form TikTok content

Yes, 10 minutes may seem like a long time for a TikTok video. Some of you might even remember when TikToks were limited to 15 seconds! But the social platform is all about creativity and experimentation, and some Creators are really using this new 10-minute length to their advantage. Here’s how:

Everyone loves a good storytime video. In the past, TikTok storytimes had to be condensed into a quick 60 seconds or split into multiple parts.

The ability to upload a single 10-minute video is revolutionising the storytime format, especially for Creators who aim to engage. Rather than rushing through a story or editing in lots of cuts, Creators can now tell their stories in a format we’re more used to seeing on YouTube. We’re talking dramatic pauses, lots of backstories, and building suspense. The key is to make sure that the entire 10 minutes is engaging. Give viewers a reason to keep watching until the end.

@jessicavanel I gotta say... Making Magic is a lot of fun! #wholesome #disney #disneyworld ♬ original sound - Jessica V.

Q&A videos are an excellent way for your followers to get to know you a bit better. It’s quite common to see Q&A’s on Instagram, usually with the Question sticker on a Story. This access to 10-minute TikTok videos will allow Creators to do in-depth Q&A videos on TikTok too!

Tell your followers to submit questions in the comment section of another video, then pick the ones you want to answer, settle in, and start filming! Though some Creators love using the Live feature on TikTok to do Q&A sessions, everyone can see the comments as they come in — making it harder to dodge anything you don’t want to answer.

Daily vlogs have always been en vogue. You can't go wrong with a daily vlog — from 20-minute long YouTube videos to 15-second montages on Reels.

TikTok’s 10-minute feature is the perfect mid-way point between Reels and a YouTube video. Your TikToks can be less polished than YouTube, while you can definitely get a bit deeper than you could with a Reel.

Film your day as you go along, edit it together in the evening, and post it to TikTok that night. It’s a great way to show more of the behind-the-scenes of your life (an already huge trend on TikTok).

DIY videos have been big on TikTok since the app’s inception, and they really boomed in popularity during COVID lockdowns. From tie-dye shirts and punch needle rugs to furniture upholstery and room makeovers, the DIY opportunities are endless. And having 10 minutes of video means you can go into more detail about each step of the DIY process.

Mukbangs — where Creators eat a meal while talking directly to the camera — had a real heyday a few years back. Though the trend was solely found on YouTube, Creators now have a chance to bring it back with 10-minute TikTok videos.

It’s a great way to update your followers on anything going on in your life — relationship breakups, career wins, travel stories — in a more casual way than a Q&A.

Morning routine

We seem to be fascinated with watching other peoples’ morning routines. YouTube, Insta, and TikTok are all full of videos montaging Creators’ skincare, breakfast, gym routine, makeup, and more.

A 10-minute morning routine video is a great way to go more in-depth into what you’re doing, whether it’s sharing a pancake recipe, explaining your favourite skincare products, or even responding to some journal prompts. Seeing an entire morning routine in real-time is an innovative way to engage your followers.

Remember: you don't have to make a 10-minute video just because you can

Don’t get caught up in the excitement and churn out mediocre content for the sake of it. Make sure you’re creating something worthwhile, that you’re proud of and that your audience will want to see.

Don’t be afraid to experiment, but remember that your 10-minute videos need to work in tandem with the rest of your content, and most of all match your style.

Ready to up your TikTok game?

TikTok tests 60-minute video uploads as it continues to take on YouTube

TikTok is testing the ability for users to upload 60-minute videos, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Thursday. The feature is available to a limited group of users in select markets, and TikTok says it doesn’t have any immediate plans to make the feature available widely.

The feature, which was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra , marks a shift from TikTok’s original format. The app allowed users to upload 15-second videos at launch, but TikTok has been increasing that limit over the past few years. While the company rose to popularity for its short-form video format, it has slowly been embracing long-form content to take on one of its biggest competitors: YouTube.

TikTok says that while creators can weave multipart stories together by telling viewers to go to part two or more of a story, it often hears from creators who want more time for things like cooking demos, beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, comedic sketches and more.

The purpose of the increased time limit is to give creators the opportunity to experiment with new or expanded types of content with more flexibility, the company says. Of course, this puts TikTok in even more direct competition with YouTube. By giving creators the ability to upload 60-minute videos on TikTok, the company is likely hoping that creators who normally post their content on YouTube will also post their videos on its platform.

The expanded time limit could also allow for a new type of content to be posted on TikTok, which is full episodes of TV shows.

Last year, Peacock made episode one of “Killing It” available to watch for free on TikTok, but it was broken up into five parts. If TikTok launches the 60-minute upload limit videos, networks would no longer have to break up an episode into multiple parts.

Many networks already upload the first episode of a TV show on YouTube to attract new viewers, and with this expanded time limit, they could do the same on TikTok. Networks are already using TikTok to reach viewers, and the expanded upload time limit could entice them to share more content on TikTok.

While not everyone would be interested in watching longer content on TikTok, the company has been seeking to enhance the viewing experience for users who are watching long-form content. For instance, the company has been testing a horizontal full-screen mode and video-scrubbing thumbnails. It also rolled out a feature last year that lets you fast-forward videos by holding down the right side of a video.

As with any test feature, it’s unknown when or if TikTok plans to launch the 60-minute video upload option widely.

Turn Your Old Smartphone Into a Home Security Camera for Free: Here's How

It doesn't take long to give your old iPhone or Android phone a new lease on life as a security camera.

ways to make your essay longer tiktok

It won't rival the features of modern security cameras, but it will get the basic job done.

Upgraded to a new  iPhone 15 ,  Google Pixel 8  or Galaxy S24  recently? You can always recycle, resell or donate your old phone, but you could also turn it into a free baby cam.

One of the coolest ways to repurpose an old phone is to convert it into a  home security camera . It's an excellent cost-effective trick to  keeping an eye on your home  when you're not there. It's also a free (or very cheap, if you need to buy a phone stand) way to keep an eye on elder relatives, anxious pets or parts of your business that you can't always watch over directly.

Read more: Best Home Security Cameras Without a Subscription

Making this phone-to-home-cam conversion isn't difficult at all. In fact, you can start using that time-worn phone to keep your home safe in just three steps. For more home tips, check out why your internet router is probably in the wrong spot  and six places to put home security cameras on your property .

ways to make your essay longer tiktok

Step 1: Install a security camera app on your old smartphone

To begin, you will need to choose a security camera app. Most apps offer many of the same features, such as local streaming, cloud streaming, recording and storing footage locally or remotely, and motion detection and alerts. Once you're set up, you will be able to monitor your living space and control your security camera from anywhere, straight from your new phone.

One of the best app options for setting up your phone as a security camera is Alfred . It's cross-platform, so it doesn't matter if your old phone was an Android phone or iPhone . And the same goes for your new phone.

Alfred is free to use and gives you a remote view of your live feed, motion detection with alerts, free cloud storage, a two-way audio feed and use of both the front and rear cameras. To unlock additional features, like higher-resolution viewing and recording, zoom capabilities, ad removal and 30-day cloud storage, you can upgrade to Alfred Premium .

1.  Download Alfred ( Android , iOS ) on both your old and new phones. You don't have to use a phone as a monitoring tool -- you can also download Alfred to your tablet or PC if you prefer to keep watch from there. Just make sure the app is on both devices.

2.  On the new phone, swipe through the introduction and tap Start . Select Viewer and tap Next .

3.  Once you get to the sign-in page, click Sign in with Google (a Google account is required) and sign in with your Google account credentials.

4.  On the old phone, repeat the same steps, but instead of selecting Viewer , select Camera . And make sure to sign in to the same Google account.

The Alfred app showing a night vision image of a cat on a bed.

Alfred's app support night vision, people recognition and more.

Once both phones are signed in to Alfred, you're pretty much done with the setup. Alfred has simplified the camera options to include only a few settings. On iOS, you can only enable motion detection, choose between the front and rear cameras, and enable or disable audio. If you're using an Android device, you have those options and can also enable continuous focus, have Alfred automatically reopen if the phone reboots, set a resolution and enable a passcode lock.

From your new phone, you can change a few more settings, such as turning notifications on or off, setting a camera or viewer name, adding other people to your Trust Circle (granting other people access to your video feeds), removing a camera, checking how many times a camera has disconnected, setting motion detection sensitivity and enabling a low-light filter on cameras.

Feel like exploring more options? That's always a good idea. Other apps that can give your old phone a security cam upgrade include:

Faceter : Faceter is a surveillance app that offers quick setup and cloud storage for Apple and Android phones.

Epoccam : EpocCam is a very speedy cam app that's made for content creators but can serve a wide variety of purposes. It's currently made only for iPhones.

iVCam from E2ESoft : iVCam is a more open-source cam solution that's best for those who really want to tinker with camera settings and customize them, although like EpocCam it's focused a bit more on webcam-related activities than security.

Step 2: Pick a spot for your new smartphone security camera

After you have the stream up and running, you will need to set up and position the camera. You may want it focused on the main entry point to your home, your backyard, the place where you store valuables or a point you think might be particularly vulnerable. You can also set up an IP camera as a baby monitor .

If you have multiple old phones lying around, you can set up multiple cameras for fairly robust video coverage.

Step 3: Mount and power your security camera smartphone

To mount or position the camera, a small smartphone tripod or suction-cup car mount can work wonders and help you position the camera in an inconspicuous place. To broaden the field of view, consider buying a wide-angle lens for your phone , something that can be purchased for between $5 and $20 online.

ways to make your essay longer tiktok

Streaming video is very power-intensive, and the phone will be on 24/7. To keep the phone from dying in the first few hours, you will need to position it close to a power source. A 10-foot Micro-USB or  Lightning cable will give you more flexibility in where you put it.

And that's it! Now you can use the security cam app on your new phone to view the feed from your old phone's camera, and you've made your home more secure without spending much at all.

Finally, if we've got you excited about using your smartphone for home security purposes, don't forget that you can also download an app like Hidden Camera Detector to automatically search for telltale signs that there's a cam watching in the room. Airbnb may have outlawed indoor security cameras, but we don't blame you if you still want to check when you're traveling.

The new social media etiquette: Post your politics, not your kids

From Facebook to TikTok, social media norms are always shifting. These tips can help you post properly.

There are no official rules for how to conduct yourself online.

In some ways, that’s great. You do you and deal with the consequences, if any arise.

But sometimes the internet’s anything-goes atmosphere can lead you into a mess you could have avoided. We can help. Here are nine maxims to live by as you post and chat online. Got social media etiquette rules (or wishes) of your own? Drop us a line .

Don’t overshare your kids

Give the children in your life the same agency you’d afford an adult.

The norms around sharing kid-related content online have shifted. We now know that once something is on the internet, it can be impossible to remove it, and that oversharing kids can be a form of exploitation or expose them to predators.

If you’re going to share videos, photos or personal stories, get consent each time, starting at a young age. Default to posting privately instead of publicly, and use ephemeral options that are less likely to follow them around forever such as Instagram Stories, which disappear after 24 hours. If a child, teen or even young adult in your family asks you to remove content you’ve posted about them in the past, delete it without argument. Finally, if you do feel the need to post publicly, block or blur the child’s face so they have privacy.

Maintain a distinction between your child’s life and your own. They might look back with fondness at the slivers of their childhood you shared with your followers — or they could feel embarrassed or exploited. Some so-called child influencers are lobbying for stronger legal protection for minors whose families make money from social media. A New York Times investigation found that accounts showing young girls in bathing suits and leotards had large followings of adult men.

Only post what’s yours to share

Don’t post someone’s newborn baby, wedding photo or divorce news before they can. Private moments and conversations should stay private unless the other person is okay with you sharing — and yes, this includes texts and DMs. “May I post this?” is your new mantra, even if it’s your spouse, child or grandchild. When it comes to big life events, defer to the subject of your post. If you go to a wedding, ask the couple when and if they want photos posted online. If you take a picture where you look great and your friend less so, a quick “may I post?” goes a long way.

The same courtesy applies to strangers. A person existing in public doesn’t constitute permission to post them. Nobody wants to step out the door worrying someone they don’t know could blast their face to an online following. Sometimes when people behave badly, sharing some evidence can lead to consequences and accountability. That’s a tough situation, and it’s worth consulting someone you trust before you share a damning video or DM publicly.

Stay on topic in the comments

Public comments on social media posts are not the place to have a two-way conversation. Got a funny quip or compliment for the creator? Go for it. But don’t try to strike up a conversation, tell them to call you back or ask if they’re on Ozempic . Save it for a text, direct message or in-person interaction.

Post about your politics

We’re done with the “no politics at the dinner table” approach to social media. If people avoid every topic that could ruffle feathers — politics, religion, money, etc. — we consign social media to reflect only the easy, shallow parts of being human.

Let your friends and family know where you stand, not just on national politics, but on local and international issues as well. Do research and share your thoughts in a respectful manner. Welcome corrections and conflicting opinions. Over time, you’ll become better versed.

That said, remember that posting about a problem is not the same as doing something about it. Make sure your online opinions make their way to the real world, and put your time and money behind the causes you care about most.

Fact-check images and videos

If you do decide to share posts to back up your views, do it responsibly. Improvements to AI-generated images and video can make it tough to tell the real from the fake . Often, all it takes are a few seconds of critical thinking to figure out that the picture of a police dog clad in an American flag saving a baby from a rushing river isn’t bona fide.

There are a few tricks for spotting AI-generated content — a computerized sheen, too many fingers. Better questions, perhaps, are “Does this seem realistic?” or “Is this designed to provoke a strong reaction?”

If a photo or video seems too good, too cute or too horrible to be true, it could be fake or misinformation . Slow down, check the original source and seek out additional context.

Don’t overstep with influencers

Content creators choose to share their lives or work with the world, but they are not actually your friend (usually). They also aren’t receptacles for your emotions or opinions. These nouveau celebrities don’t owe you much of anything, so there’s no sense in getting mean or demanding. If a creator says or does something you dislike, you can respond respectfully, stop following or block them. Feel free to disagree with them about political or other issues if they choose to discuss them, but it’s rude to send comments or messages with unsolicited criticism or advice — say about parenting choices or that person’s appearance.

Opt for deletion and ephemerality

Even as we get used to leaving traces of our lives online, an unflattering “digital footprint” can still cause problems. Colleges and employers check social media accounts for whatever they consider to be red flags. You can save yourself a headache by paring down the digital breadcrumbs you leave behind. Gen Z has already started moving in this direction, with some keeping their grids on Instagram completely blank .

On Facebook, you can manually delete posts or limit their audience. Instagram lets you hide posts without deleting them by choosing “archive.” You can also post to stories instead of the main feed, as stories disappear after a day. For X, you can sign up for a service such as TweetDelete , which automatically deletes posts after a certain period of time. Threads head Adam Mosseri has said the app may introduce a built-in auto-delete feature.

Read the room

The internet has made us more aware of tragedies at home and across the globe, and the suffering can seem endless. You don’t need to turn your profiles into news channels, but get a sense of the temperature before you post. A celebratory photo in the midst of a major disaster, especially one that’s affecting your friends, can leave a bad taste. Also consider what’s going on in your inner circle when sharing news, like announcing a pregnancy when someone you’re close to is dealing with infertility.

Match your post to the platform

LinkedIn is for career updates. Facebook is for posting in groups, selling used bookshelves or sharing major life updates. Instagram is for beautiful scenery and vibes. X is for stream-of-consciousness commentary and arguing. TikTok is for strangers. Make sure your posts fit the platform you’re on. (The emotional essays on LinkedIn are weird, sorry .)

If you’re tired of sharing updates with your whole audience — including your grandma and that one guy you dated when you were 19 — you may benefit from a smaller platform. Instagram lets you build a “Close Friends” list and share directly with those users. A Discord chatroom, Substack newsletter or “finsta” (anonymous Instagram account) may be a better home for your musings and confessions than a public channel.

The Sunday Read: ‘Why Did This Guy Put a Song About Me on Spotify?’

The answer involves a remarkable — and lucrative, and ridiculous — scheme to game the way we find music today..

Have you heard the song “Brett Martin, You a Nice Man, Yes”?

Probably not. On Spotify, “Brett Martin, You a Nice Man, Yes” has not yet accumulated enough streams to even register a tally. Even Brett Martin, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and the titular Nice Man, didn’t hear the 1 minute 14 second song until last summer, a full 11 years after it was uploaded by an artist credited as Papa Razzi and the Photogs.

When Martin stumbled on “Brett Martin, You a Nice Man, Yes,” he naturally assumed it was about a different, more famous Brett Martin: perhaps Brett Martin, the left-handed reliever who until recently played for the Texas Rangers; or Brett Martin, the legendary Australian squash player; or even Clara Brett Martin, the Canadian who in 1897 became the British Empire’s first female lawyer. Only when the singer began referencing details of stories that he made for public radio’s “This American Life” almost 20 years ago did he realize the song was actually about him. The song ended, “I really like you/Will you be my friend?/Will you call me on the phone?” Then it gave a phone number, with a New Hampshire area code.

So, he called.
