Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science and related research areas.

In the United States, Canada, and Europe, accredited PhD granting institutions in Computer Science or related fields may nominate up to four eligible students during the application period. The fellowship offers:

• 2 year Fellowship with opportunity to extend to 3rd year
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• Google Research Mentor

The university will nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Full-time graduate students pursuing a PhD and enrolled in an institution in the U.S.
• Completed graduate coursework by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.

The application will ask for the following materials.  Upload them to the application form as PDFs and be mindful of the word counts.

• Cover sheet  signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements.

• Short ( 1-page ) CV of the student’s primary advisor
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor).
• Research / dissertation proposal ( maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response ( 350-word limit ) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response ( 350-word limit ) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records

Note:  The review committee advises that proposals are more successful in the review process when the advisor takes an active role in reviewing and editing the proposal.

The  Google PhD Fellowship programme  nominations process for 2024/25 is now open, please find further information here . UCL is able to nominate 3 candidates and, if you wish to be considered, please complete this form by Sunday, 21 st  April:  https://form.jotform.com/240864312392051

Please note , the deadline on the Google website is later because UCL needs to run their own internal selection process. 

You will need to provide the following materials in the form of one single PDF (not multiple PDFs – this is a requirement from Google).

Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. 

Universities may nominate up to four eligible students.  An internal selection committee will determine the University's 4 nominees.  Students may apply by submitting all application materials  including at least two letters of reference  by the internal deadline of Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

Application Materials

• Student is a full-time graduate student pursuing a PhD at the submitter's institution.
• Student has completed graduate coursework by the Fall of the award year (Fall 2024).
• Student is not already supported by a comparable industry award (Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt).
• Student is not a Google employee and does not have any members of this student's household that is a Google employee (spouse, parent, children).
• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) CV of the student's primary advisor
• 2-3 Letters of Recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (At least one from the thesis advisor).  Letters must be submitted in the application portal by letter writers by the May 1 deadline.
• Research/dissertation proposa l (Max 3 pages excluding references)
• Research Impact student essay (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Leadership student essay (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Students should prompt their letter writers as soon as possible so they may upload their letters in the application portal by May 1.  

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing. In the United States, Canada, and Europe, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

Nominations

Doctoral students are eligible to request their advisors to submit a nomination on their behalf by August 10, 2022 using the form located here (password has been sent to advisors in a separate email). Self-nominations are not accepted.

Nominated students will receive request to provide additional information by August 24, 2022 :

• Self-identification as member of an underrepresented minority (if applicable)
• Confirmation that they will be full time students during the upcoming academic year
• Expected graduation term
• Remaining coursework
• Other sources of funding

• Names and emails of two references

An internal evaluation committee will select four students to be nominated by Northeastern University to the Google PhD Fellowship. Selected students, once approved for nomination to the Google PhD Fellowship, please work with your college Research Admin team and NU-RES Pre-award support to complete the nomination process.

Google phd fellowship.

The limited competition (up to four nominees from UIC) closed May 1st

The competition is open! The campus deadline is May 1st. Should there be more than four applications, the Dean of the Graduate College will determine the university's final slate of nominees.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to apply. We currently offer Fellowships in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, India, the United States and Canada.

The information below pertains to applications from US institutions. There does not seem to be a citizenship requirement.

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. The funds are given as an unrestricted gift, and it is Google’s policy not to pay for overhead [F&A]. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor who we hope will become a valuable resource to the student. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. Fellowship recipients serving an internship are subject to the same intellectual property and other contractual obligations as any other Google intern. If a Fellowship student is interested, an internship at Google is encouraged, but not guaranteed or required. Awardees will be notified in August.

Since UIC can nominate only a finite number of students, the Graduate College is running a limited competition. If UIC nominates more than two individuals, Google encourages the nomination of students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability

Eligibility

Students must:

• Be enrolled full-time and pursuing a PhD in computer science or related program*;
• have completed graduate coursework by the Fall of the award year, when the Fellowship begins. This is usually the 3rd year for US and Canadian students;
• remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award;
• Not be Google employees, and their spouses, children, and or members of a Google employee household;
• Not be already supported by a comparable industry award.
• Conduct research that aligns with Google AI Principles .

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In the United States, Canada, and Europe, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee’s status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Nomination Procedures

Applications

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single PDF file. Thus, it is the student’s and their program’s responsibility to furnish the following as a single PDF:

• Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair/Head confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. This paragraph should include the student’s UIN, semester of PhD matriculation, anticipated graduation term, when coursework was completed, current funding, and Google employment.  (See FAQ “What are the eligibility requirements for students?”); [no form is provided]
• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) CV of the student’s primary advisor
• Two to three (2-3) letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
• Research / dissertation proposal including references (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records

Submissions

Given that the application includes confidential letters of recommendation, the head/chair, DGS, mentor, or a grad staff member is expected to submit the nomination file. Nominations must be sent as an email attachment (with all the materials in a single file) to the Graduate College’s Limited Competition folder in Box (a FERPA-compliant cloud storage service): [email protected]

The PDF files should be saved using the following naming convention: Google2024_ DepartmentName_NomineeLastNameFirstInitial.pdf

• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.

• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

• Up to 4 year Fellowship
• US $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

How do I apply for the PhD Fellowship Program? Who should submit the applications? Can students apply directly for a Fellowship?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia: students may apply directly during the application period.

Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States : students cannot apply directly to the program; they must be nominated by an eligible university during the application period.

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

Australia and New Zealand : universities may nominate up to two eligible students.

Canada and the United States : Universities may nominate up to four eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability.

Africa, East Asia and Europe : Universities may nominate up to three eligible students. How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

Google Public Policy Fellowship

Program overview.

The Google Public Policy Fellowship program is held in markets across the United States, Europe, and the Emerging Markets. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend a semester contributing to the public dialogue on these issues, and exploring future academic and professional interests. We’ve designed our program to expose historically underrepresented students in this field to career opportunities in the industry. Fellows will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on tech policy issues or public affairs consultancies with expertise in the policy strategy space.

Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. They currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.

Research Areas

Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.
• Up to 4 year Fellowship
• US $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Latin America

• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Eligibility

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa:  Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia:  students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe:  Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

Peterson Fellowship offers O’Neill students pipeline to opportunity

One of the O’Neill School’s defining characteristics is providing high-quality, hands-on learning experiences to its students. From research opportunities to community-based projects to its many internship opportunities, one fellowship stands out for its ability to connect students with experiences and even careers after they earn their degrees.

The Peterson Fellowship is a three-semester fellowship providing financial support for talented O’Neill graduate students to gain experience with the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office, IndyGo, and Indianapolis International Airport.

Ted Field received the Peterson Fellowship while completing his MPA at the O’Neill School in Indianapolis. He started his journey as a Peterson Fellow with the Indianapolis Airport Authority, the body overseeing the airport, then moved to the mayor’s office. In the summer of 2023, he finished his time at IndyGo, the public transportation authority in Indianapolis.

“It has been really phenomenal for me to try my hand at a bunch of different things,” said Field. “Right now, I’m spearheading a customer perception survey IndyGo hopes to roll out sometime next year. So far, I’ve been responsible for creating the scope of work and developing a pilot program so that we can test it and make sure that it’s going to work.”

In his stops across the Circle City, his hands-on experience went beyond what was offered in the classroom, all in complementary ways.

Field dipped his hands in photography and videography while with the airport authority, producing work that would end up in their “decade of excellence” video project.

At the mayor’s office, he worked primarily with the education team, reviewing applications for new charter schools in the city. He conducted research and analysis and was a part of the interview process these schools require.

Field’s fellowship allowed him to diversify his education with distinct learning opportunities unique to the fellowship, which have taken him beyond what he could learn in the classroom.

“To be able to take the concepts that I was learning in class, use my experiences at these places to talk about how things worked in my class to bring that experience there, it was really neat,” said Field.

His fellowship experience paid off in the classroom, too, when it came time for his cohort’s capstone project.

“Instead of writing a paper, our capstone group decided to do a video,” Field said. “We worked with the organization Indiana Vote by Mail. Because I was able to gather some of the experience doing videography at the airport, the group was on board with trying to do something a little bit outside the box and different, and something that honestly scared us a little bit going into it because it wasn’t the security blanket of writing a paper, but we were able to pull that off and feel pretty good about it.”

While he isn’t sure what’s next, Ted knows he wants to help improve his community. If anything, the Peterson Fellowship opened so many doors he will have a tough time choosing which one to walk through.

“The goal with going back to grad school and doing this program in general was to cast a wide net and allow me the opportunity to say yes to multiple opportunities, which is what the Peterson fellowship has allowed me to do in tandem with that,” Field said. “If the Peterson fellowship has shown me anything it is that there are so many different possibilities that most people don’t even know exist.”

Current Fellowship Recipients

The Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to recruit outstanding students who have demonstrated an interest in the advancement of the Mexican American or Latino community.

Preference shall be given to students who plan to conduct research in the area of Mexican American and/or Latino Studies. Students who are pursuing an M.A., M.F.A., or Ph.D. at the University of Houston are eligible to apply. Priority consideration will be given to students who bring a unique quantitative or qualitative research toolkit that would enhance CMALS’s research activities. Fellowships of up to $19,435 per academic year, renewable for a second year, are awarded to students on a competitive basis. Upon funds availability selected fellows may be provided tuition (see Awards section below for specifics). 

Application

Applications should include the following:

• A cover letter containing, name, contact information (email and phone number), student ID number, college, academic department, advisor’s name,  and contact information.  
• Resume with a listing of awards, publications, and/or samples of work where appropriate.
• A two-page description of the candidate’s research goals, including reference to the area of study in the M.A., M.F.A., or Ph.D. program.
• A letter of nomination from the chair or director of graduate studies in the UH department that has admitted the student.
• Two letters of reference, one of which must be from a faculty member that is familiar with the student’s current research record and work.

Students will be awarded fellowships of up to $19,435 per academic year in addition to any other scholarships they may receive from their departments or colleges. Recipients of the fellowships must be enrolled as full-time students and will work for the Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies as research assistants. The fellowships are renewable for a second year, provided that the recipient is in good academic standing, making satisfactory progress towards the degree, and has fulfilled her/his obligations with CMALS, and upon funds availability. For selected fellows, a decision to cover tuition will be made based on current and future funds available to CMALS.
