He takes institution and a fast thinker. Ralph also likes to dothinges his way. Ralph wants to get things together so they don’t have to be without shelter.Ralph really wants to get off if the Island. He doesn’t want anyone to do things till he tells them there jobs.

Ralph is kid caring and brave (pg-80-81) Ralph knew that getting off of the island was the key to leaving the island and to go home and in addition Ralo made the fire was kept going so someone or something would see them. Hardworking is the main key for Ralph because he knew half of the kids on the island wanted to go home to see there mom and dad. Because Ralph blowed the conch for a meeting so he can help talk about what is going to happen. Ralph wants to use the rocks to keep the fire going so someone can see it and help them. we’ve all got to use the rocks again this place is getting dirty . Ralph doesn’t nun of the Boys let the fire go out because the last time he fire went out there was a ship in the area. But right when the ship was coming through fire went out and Ralph got really mad and made the boys do fire watch for a long time and the all of the boys would take turns.

Ralph has a ability to work/maintain order at the same time. Ralph wants to get things done so they would have somewhere to live well they are stuck on the island. Ralph is the only one who takes control in the group. Ralph wants to give the all if the boys jobs to do so they can stay busy throughout the day so they can be safe and good environment to stay in well they are on the island. We’ve got to make a fire to keep us safe through the night do nun if the boys will get hurt. None of their parents knows where their kids are and none of the boys want to die well they are on the island.

Ralph is the only by out of the whole group to stay what’s on there mind. someone who directs or guides a group. However, good ability to set priorities and accomplish what needs to be done with the feelings of the group in mind. However Ralph is really the the only one who cares about other people’s feelings half of the time. Some of the boys are younger than the other boys so Ralph I more overprotective them then the older boys. When all of the boys were still asleep Ralph went to the lagoon to wash up, after the he washed up he went to go make more shelters for more of the boy because there was not a lot of them. Ralph is like the adult of the group.

Ralph has this idea, and stuck with it for the safety of himself, and the others on the island. Ralph is always on the lookout for opportunities and ideas to help the group get rescued. Ever since there go stuck on the island he always made it feel like safe when all of the boys were asleep.The theme of chaos is demonstrated through the loss of control, power-struggle, and the fight for on the island. As a leader, Ralph possesses the quality of responsibility to make the island as safe as possible for little luns. Ralph should recognize his contribution to the island, and how he made a great impact. Without Ralph, the children on the island may have not been rescued. Ralph made a decision to keep the little luns safe no matter what happens to them and Ralph wants to make all of the kids happy when ever they are feeling down.

Leadership is that they encourage people to do things they want to do. In Lord Of The Flies,Jack and Ralph are very different leader. Jack is out minded because he likes to do things that will get him in trouble, but Ralph is responsible, caring,and brave. It is evident that Ralph is the stronger leader in the novel.

Ralph is a Better Leader than Jack

To be a good leader, one must cater to the people while still being responsible and taking charge. In the story of, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, a group of boys get stuck on an island without adults from a plane crash. Two of the main characters, Ralph and Jack, wish to be leader, but eventually end up splitting into two groups that result in a bit of a rivalry. Between the two, Ralph is a much better leader.

Ralph cares more for the boys than Jack. When mentioned, Ralph shut down the idea of the beast in attempt for the boys not to worry, “But I tell you there isn’t a beast!” (Golding, pg. 36) Jack let them believe in the beast, “but if there was a snake we’d hunt it and kill it.” (pg. 36) This shows that Ralph doesn’t want the others to think it is possible so they don’t fear and only focus on the beast, while Jack let’s then believe in the beast and fear it. Ralph accepted and listened to everyone, including Piggy, but Jack always shut Piggy down for no good reason and punished anyone that wouldn’t listen to him, trying to take complete control of them like they were his puppets. For example, when Piggy wanted to speak, “’I got the conch-‘Jack turned fiercely. ‘You shut up!’” (pg. 42) Jack shut him down, but Ralph at the beginning of the book said this: “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking.” Proving that he would let people have a say, or express certain matters and that he had a way for people to listen to the person speaking without being interrupted. Of course, one may say that Ralph also picked on Piggy and didn’t care about him, but he definitely let him and the others speak more that Jack ever let them, and he didn’t shut them down or punish them.

Ralph cares about being rescued. He always wants the signal fire going, while Jack doesn’t seem to care. Ralph, on page 37, said this: “So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” He made the idea of the signal fire, and he cares about being rescued. Ralph wanted to make sure that the fire was always going. On page 42, Ralph also said this: “We’ve got to have special people for looking after the fire.” He was the one to make sure there was a way to keep the fire going. One may say that Jack wanted to be rescued too, but eventually he didn’t seem to care much about being rescued, and made up a life of his own so he didn’t need to be rescued.

Ralph knew what was important for a functioning society. Jack didn’t care much about the rules, while Ralph made rules. There was a point when Jack said, “Bollocks to the rules!’ (pg. 99) This shows how Jack didn’t care, which can have things spiral out of control. Ralph wanted to build huts to make sure everyone had shelter and somewhere like a home for a while. There’s a part of the book that Jack and Ralph address this, and Jack says he cares more about meat; ‘“We want meat” “Well, we haven’t got any yet, and we want shelters.”’ (pg. 51) All Jack cares about is hunting and having fun, while Ralph actually wants to build shelter to keep them from things that may harm them and to create a sense of security. One could argue that Jack’s community did fine, but only because they were scared of what would happen if they didn’t listen to Jack and because Jack had complete control over the boys in his “tribe.”

Ralph is a much better leader than Jack. He cares more about the boys and it’s shown that he listens to them more than Jack, while Jack only controls them and punishes them if the boys don’t listen to him. Ralph cared about being rescued. He made the idea of the fire and wanted to make sure it was always going. Ralph also knew what was important for a proper, functioning society. He wanted to build shelters, he made sure everyone already had access to food, and he made sure there were rules. In conclusion, Ralph was the better leader within Golding’s charming, yet dark book.

LOTF by William Golding was published in 1954, which was very shortly after the Second World War. In the story it’s almost as though we see a mini war breakout amongst the boys. Where Ralph is the equivalent of Churchill who represents democracy and stands for peace and wellbeing. Then there’s Jack who is the equivalent of Hitler; the antithesis of democracy and peace.

Golding shows us that Ralph and jack are opposites right from the beginning when he describes their physical appearance. Jack is described as ‘skinny’ and ‘bony’ with red hair wearing black. It sounds as though Golding is describing the grim reaper who as we all know is associated with death and evil. And also Black and red are colours that are normally associated with evil or villainy whereas Ralph is described as tall for his age and handsome with fair hair and this sounds as though Golding is describing a hero for example someone like Hercules.

At the beginning Jack seems to be the one that society or civilisation has had the greatest effect on. He immediately assumes it was an adult that blew the conch and is first to suggest that they should figure out a way to get off the island. Ironically later on in the story he’s the one that sabotages their chance of getting off of the island when he goes off hunting instead of watching the fire.

Ralph behaves childish when he first meets piggy. We see this when piggy tells him what they called him at school. He mocks him and is roaring with laughter with no consideration for piggy’s feelings - just like any other child.  

Although he behaves this way Ralph has natural leadership qualities that are recognised by the rest of the group when they vote him chief. He presides over the boys with a natural sense of authority and agrees to a vote for chief. This emphasises the relationship with Churchill and democracy whereas Jack begins to boast about how he  ought to assume the role of chief automatically because he’s chapter chorister and head boy. And he can sing a c sharp. When obviously none of those things are going to help them get off the island.

Ralph becomes chief by vote and this establishes a conflict between the different leadership qualities offered by jack and Ralph.

Jack demonstrates a military mindset, like Hitler; strict and authoritarian. He orders his choir about as if they were troops. He doesn’t seem to even care when one of them falls flat on their face and simply says.

‘He’s always throwing a faint…’  

Interestingly the role that Golding first chooses for the choir is as hunters. He chooses the task that is most associated with death and violence and, in this society, most related to military values.

Jack represents a traditional villainy, he exemplifies a physical manifestation of evil: with his dark cloak and wild red hair, he gives a slightly satanic impression. He is cruel and sadistic, preoccupied with hunting and killing pigs, but his sadism extends as the book progresses to include cruelty towards the other boys. Some may say that jack would be the best leader because he has the ability to make others obey him. Although this may be true jack seems to forget their main objective, which is to get off the island. He sabotages their best opportunity to be rescued, to fulfil his bloodlust, which he claims was a priority. He comes to represent anarchy and dictatorship as leader.

It may be argued that Ralph’s only strengths are that he looks like a leader and he found the conch. Personally I disagree with this statement as it totally ignores the fact that Ralph is the one character who remains the most civilized throughout the entire novel, he unlike anyone else including piggy, is able to acknowledge that what they did to Simon was murder- The unlawful killing of another human being.

Although Ralph lacks Piggy's overt intellect, he is calm and rational, with sound judgement and a strong moral sensibility. He is susceptible to the same instinctual influences that affect the other boys, for example Ralph's role in Simon's death. But With his attention to justice and equality Ralph represents liberation and democracy as a leader.

So who is a better leader? I suppose ultimately this begs the question would you rather live in an anarchic society based on dictatorship and evil such as that of Jack and Hitler? Or in a democracy based upon peace such as that of Ralph and Churchill?
