Significance of World Environment Day

World Environment day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year. More than 100 countries Worldwide join in the celebration of the World Environment day. It was started by the United Nations Environmental Program in the year 1973 and has been continuing till now. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about the Environment.

What is Environment?

Scientifically speaking, everything around us constitutes our Environment. Both living and non-Types of the Equation of the Motion living things make up our Environment. The living or biotic components include plants, animals and microbes, while the non-living or abiotic components include air, water, soil and so on.

Why is the Environment in Danger?

The Environment is in danger because of the high levels of pollution. All the major components of the Environment such as the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the biosphere, all are trapped with pollutants. The rising level of pollutants is destroying the normal Environmental conditions.

This type of pollutants can be natural (for example volcanic eruptions, forest fires etc) or manmade (pollutants released from industries, emissions from cars). It is mainly man made pollution that has caused rapid destruction of the Environment. The major forms of pollution are air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution.

Why is it Necessary to Save the Environment?

The Environment is one of the most important tools for our survival on planet Earth. The Environment nurtures us and helps us survive. We cannot imagine life without air, water and soil. The biotic components like plants and animals are also important survival tools. Plants help purify the air around us. We get food from plants and animals.

All the components of the Environment are dependent on each other in a web of relations known as the ecological web. It is necessary to maintain this web in balance because if one component collapses then the entire web will crumble destroying all life forms. This is why we must choose to work towards preserving the Environment and undoing the damage we did.

What do we do on World Environment Day?

The main purpose of the World Environment day is to spread awareness about the current conditions of the Environment. On this day people come together to join in efforts to improve our life. Every year there is one theme or Environmental problem which is focused upon and a pledge to combat that problem is taken that year. For example for the year 2019, the theme was air pollution.

Organizations all around the World come together on this day, to take small steps to improve our future. Schools and offices encourage workers and students to plant trees or clean up some local land. These small efforts can leave a big impact on the Environment.

To improve the Environmental conditions the government and the international organizations must come together to fight the problems and save our Environment. Introducing stricter laws, condemning the use of plastics and planting more trees can help to curb pollution and help save the Environment. This can help spread awareness and help people lower the gravity of the pollution levels around them.

World Environment Day reminds us to consolidate our planet and ensure that the Environment is conserved at all costs. It illuminates the causes that cause the most damage in our Environment. For example, industries and industries play a major role in polluting. They reduce the amount of air we breathe and the water we consume.

Therefore, this Day serves as an eye-opener for many citizens who are unaware of all this. In other words , it spreads awareness to ordinary people about the current situation. In addition, it also encourages the community from different communities and communities to play an active role in celebrating this Day.

In addition, it also encourages them to be active in developing Environmental protection measures. Not only that, but it also encourages everyone to keep their Environment safe and clean so that everyone has a clean, green and prosperous future.

Eight Simple Things that can help to Protect the Earth

Reduce, reuse, and recycle - Reduce is the waste that you throw away. Follow the three "Rs" to conserve natural resources and a landfill.

Volunteers - Volunteer to clean up your community. You can take part in protecting your water Environment, too.

Education - As you further your education, you can help others understand the value and importance of our natural resources.

Save water - The water you use is low, decreases the flow and polluted water eventually seeps into the sea.

Shop wisely - Buy a small plastic bag and carry a reusable shopping bag.

Use durable lights - Energy-efficient lamps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And turn off the light when you leave the room!

Plant a tree - Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help fight climate change.

Do not send chemicals into our water - Choose non-toxic chemicals at home and in the office.

2-Minute Speech on World Environment Day

Good morning teachers and my dear friends. Today, I stand before you to present my World Environment Day speech. World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. Our environment is our home, and it is our responsibility to safeguard its health from every challenge standing against it.

Today, we hear news like the loss of biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest, the rise in global temperature, water pollution, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches, climate change, etc. All of these challenges are the result of our careless and selfish attitude towards the environment. This planet is sustained on a limited amount of resources and degrading these resources can lead to a threatening situation for the whole planet.

In 2022, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The 1972 Stockholm Convention was the first major environmental summit, which was named the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. All the participating countries were encouraged to work to meet environmental challenges in all spheres of life. A total of 26 principle issues were put on the table.

After this, several environmental summits were conducted to raise awareness about global environmental conservation to meet sustainable development goals. Some of them were the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, the Kyoto Protocol of 1992, the Paris Peace Agreement in 2015, etc.

The objectives of World Environment Day address every issue related to our environmental concerns.

  • Environment Day aims to increase public awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
  • Encourages everyone to take sustainable steps towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Essay On Earth Day

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is observed worldwide. This day was established to promote environmental safety and awareness. Earth Day was first observed by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. Nelson sparked multiple large-scale movements, protested, and mobilised the American public to begin caring for the environment. Here are a few sample essays on Earth Day.

Essay On Earth Day

100 Words Essay On Earth Day

World Earth Day is observed every year on April 22. The aim is to bring attention to the effects of ever-increasing global warming, openly debate about how it affects our daily lives and spread knowledge on the ways to prevent further harm from occurring, as well as undoing what has already been done. On this day, a number of important issues are discussed publicly, including climate change, increasing sea levels, ozone layer thinning, and indiscriminate deforestation. Numerous conferences, awareness campaigns, etc., are organised to commemorate this day. Some volunteers choose to plant trees on neighbouring property, while others prefer to clean the adjacent roads or rivers.

200 Words Essay On Earth Day

Several nations across the world celebrate World Earth Day. It's a day set aside to spread awareness and show appreciation for the Earth, our home planet.

First Earth Day Celebrations | Earth Day was first observed in the USA, and eventually it came to be celebrated worldwide. It is observed by more than 193 nations with a strong commitment to educating the populace. The inaugural Earth Day was commemorated on April 22, 1970. American Senator Gaylord Nelson recognised the necessity for this day in 1990, the first World Earth Day was officially recognised on a global level.

Meaning | Legend has it that the Sant Barbara oil leak in 1969 killed off zillions of aquatic species, including flora, and as a result, Earth Day was instituted. Earth Day is meant to remind people of the need to be more aware and appreciative of the planet's resources.

Activities Undertaken | Everyone is urged to switch off all unnecessary lights. Some volunteers go to neighbouring properties on this day to plant trees, while others clean the nearby waterways or roads. To promote open mindfulness, a number of experts team up to create banners, origami creations, or artistic pieces. It is our responsibility to restore the environmental harm we have wrought.

500 Words Essay On Earth Day

April 22 is recognised as World Earth Day to show support for the planet's health and promote public awareness of the problem. Over 190 nations have celebrated it since 1970. The signing of the Paris Agreement this year has increased the importance of World Earth Day. This agreement has been signed by about 120 countries, including the US and China, who promise to enact regulations that will reduce the release of ozone-depleting compounds into the atmosphere.

Issues Of Concern

World Earth Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the constantly growing global threat, freely discuss the catastrophic effects it has on our daily lives, and instruct everyone about how to prevent further damage and repair that has already been done. Environmental change, steadily rising ocean level, the depletion of the ozone layer, and ruthless deforestation are some predominant issues of discussion.

Establishing Earth Day

The need for an Earth Day began to be seen in the 1970s. It was then when people started becoming sensitive towards the planet and making some effort to protect it. The inaugural Earth Day celebration took place in 1970. There were millions of people involved. People protested and urged the government to safeguard the environment.

Gaylord Nelson’s Contribution

The key driving force for the Earth Day celebration was US Senator Gaylord Nelson. He demanded action in support of the environment alongside activists, students, environmentalists, and the general public. Additionally, he put a lot of effort into bringing the issue to a political level.

Senator Nelson was successful in his aim, and both the government and the general public enthusiastically supported the first Earth Day. Everyone who participated in the event—rich, poor, athletes, farmers, businesspeople, and others—made a commitment to preserve the planet earth.

Importance Of Earth Day

The only planet where life exists is Earth. It's special and the only location we have. It will put our very existence in peril if we can't keep it safe.

Numerous factors are necessary for life on Earth. For life to exist on Earth, there must be land, water, soil, forests, and air. But unregulated resource consumption, deforestation, pollution, climatic shifts, and other factors have seriously harmed the Earth's environment.

Earth Day serves as a reminder that sustainable living is necessary for ecological balance now more than ever. It serves as a reminder about how crucial it is to preserve ecosystems, nature, and other forms of life.

On Earth Day, we are reminded to act right away to stop the harmful effects of climate change.

How We Celebrated Earth Day In School

Last year, my school enthusiastically celebrated Earth Day. A special assembly was held wherein students presented their views about how the Earth could be protected and sustainable development be facilitated. Each class planted a sapling a promised to nurture it. Children also made posters around the theme “Earth Day” which were put up on the multiple display boards across the school. The activities helped students understand the importance of conserving the planet and also the ways to do so.

World Environment Day 2024

Biodiversity Belgium - Landscapes

On 5 June, we celebrate World Environment Day. Established by the United Nations in 1972, it is the largest international environmental event with millions of people participating worldwide. It has evolved into a prominent global platform for promoting environmental awareness .

The EU has placed the environment at the forefront of its agenda with EU policies designed to protect the environment  and biodiversity , safeguard human health , and promote the transition to a circular economy . In 2019, the Commission introduced the European Green Deal, a comprehensive strategy aiming to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050.

Key actions:

  • Greenhouse gas emission reduction : establishing a framework to achieve at least 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels by the end of this decade
  • Decoupling economic growth from emissions : since 1990, greenhouse gas emissions have dropped by 32,5%, while our economy has grown by nearly 70%
  • Fostering the development of innovative technologies to reduce emissions : implementing the Net-Zero Industry Act to speed up permitting processes for clean-tech manufacturing and support European businesses in maintaining competitiveness while transitioning to greener practices
  • Reducing the environmental impact of production and consumption : with the Circular Economy Action Plan making sustainable products the norm, from electronics, textiles, vehicles, construction to food
  • Protecting biodiversity : building on Natura 2000, the world’s largest network of protected natural areas, to safeguard natural resources and stop the decline of endangered species and habitats
  • Addressing carbon leakage : with   the Carbon Border Adjustment ensuring that emissions are reduced wherever they are produced, even outside of EU borders
  • Protecting people from environmental hazards : with EU rules guaranteeing safe drinking water, clean bathing water, improved air quality, and reduced noise, as well as reducing or eliminating the effects of harmful chemicals
  • Supporting people and regions affected by extreme climate events : with the EU Solidarity Fund to support the affected areas
  • Protecting vulnerable workers and societies : establishing the Just Transition Fund and the Social Climate Fund to support vulnerable communities facing the biggest challenges to adapt to new environmental policies

The Commission remains fully committed to transforming the EU into a clean, resource-efficient, and competitive economy, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The European Green Deal is based on a clean and circular economy. It is pushing forward a clean transition that protects people and the planet and is economically sound and socially fair.
