Dhaka Residential Model College: A Legacy of Excellence

Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) is one of the most prestigious and historic public residential schools in Bangladesh. Established in 1960 by Pakistani President Field Marshal Ayub Khan, the college has a rich legacy of producing some of the finest scholars, leaders and professionals in the country. In this blog post, we will explore the history, achievements and facilities of this remarkable institution.

DRMC was founded on May 5, 1960 on an area of about 52 acres beside Mirpur Road near Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka. The initial purpose of establishing DRMC was to provide education for the sons of elite military officers and high-ranking government officials in East Pakistan. The school, and later the college, were modeled after public schools in the United Kingdom (according to the British Public Schools Act 1868), particularly Eton College. The house system was designed to resemble Eton’s.

In 1962, the administration of DRMC was assumed by the provincial government of then East Pakistan. In 1965, the government converted the institution into an autonomous body, and its administration was relegated to a board of governors with the Chief Secretary as its chairman. In 1967, the government again took control of the school. At that time, a new board of governors was constituted with the Education Secretary as its chairman.

After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, a board of governors was appointed with the Education Secretary as its chairman. Since its inception, the school has been funded through government grants and minimal student fees. The Board of Governors has been empowered to “frame rules as it deems necessary for the proper functioning of the school”.

The school began with only one study session, known as the Morning shift which operates from 07:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. In March 1993, another session known as the Day shift was added, according to the education expansion policy of the government, to cope with the growing number of students. The day shift session operates from 12:30 p.m. to 05:10 p.m.

Achievements

DRMC has a reputation for academic excellence and co-curricular activities. The college follows the national curriculum prescribed by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) and prepares students for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations under Dhaka Education Board.

The college has consistently achieved outstanding results in both SSC and HSC examinations over the years. In 2019, DRMC secured 100% pass rate in both SSC and HSC examinations with 95% and 93% students obtaining GPA-5 (the highest grade point average) respectively.

The college also participates in various national and international competitions and events such as Olympiads, Model United Nations (MUN), debates, quizzes, sports, cultural programs and social service projects. The college has won numerous awards and accolades for its performance in these fields.

Campus: The thing that will attract you the most to this college is its campus. In the capital city, where there is no place like sesame. The 52-acre completely non-political campus seems to be a completely different picture. To all the Remians it is known as the 52-acre paradise.

House: Admission to a college in Dhaka is easy but not adapting to the environment. Where to live? How is the environment? What is the quality of food? many more questions arise. In that case, I don’t think the students in DRMC have to worry about this. There are a total of 6 (Morning-3, Day-3) houses for residential students. Those who are in charge of the houses (Housemasters, House Tutors, and Staffs) handle the responsibilities very well. As a result of their friendly behavior, the inertia between them will disappear in a few days. When it comes to remembering one of the best times of life, House Life must be at the forefront.

Quality of education: DRMC is a well-known name in all of Bangladesh including the Dhaka Board. the teachers here are very quality and digital technology is used in teaching. A genuine bond is formed between students and teachers. So every year achieves unimaginable success towards results.

Dhaka Residential Model College

Dhaka Residential Model College started its activities in 1960 when the Government of Pakistan founded it as a Residential Model School on an area of about 50 of land acres at Mohammadpur following the model of famous Public School of England. Initially the management of the institution was under the direct control of the central government. In 1962, the central government of Pakistan handed over the responsibility to the provincial government of East Pakistan. A board was constituted to look after the management and since then it is being run as an autonomous body. In 1967, the central government again took over the control of the school and it was elevated a higher secondary level institution with the new name Dhaka Residential Model College. After the liberation of Bangladesh, it was placed under the control of a high power Board of Governors headed by the secretary of Ministry of Education. The Board is presently managing the affairs of the College.
