• Essay on How to Plan a Party

For some people, planning a party can be a hassle. It can be expensive, time consuming, and frustrating when it doesn’t turn out as planned. I have always had a love for planning parties. I just recently planned one for my gender reveal. The steps I take are pretty simple, but overall gave me an amazing turn out at my party. To plan a successful party, you must set a date and time, buy your supplies that are needed, and invite your friends and family.

The first and perhaps most important step in planning a successful party is setting a date and a time. This may be the first step but it is certainly not the easiest. Setting a date can take weeks, even months to do. You never know when everyone is free or if there is an event coming up that you have to attend. Avoid planning the party in the months with holidays or months where there is a big event coming up. Ask around to your friends and family to see if they have anything planned and are free to come. You most definitely want the people closest to you to come to your event. If you see a day where there are no events scheduled go ahead and snag that day for your party. You also need to set a designated time. For instance, say that your party is going to be from 3:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m. People want to know this stuff so they can plan things around your party. Remember do not stress yourself out over this considering it is the first step.

The next and most expensive step is buying your materials that are needed for the party like ingredients for the food, party favors, table cloths, napkins, plates, etc. If you have a theme it is best to go to a party store and check to see if they have packages that you can buy. That can save you a few dollars. If you cannot find those packages anywhere, go to your local Walmart and buy the supplies you can find. Getting the basic stuff as in napkins, plates, forks, spoons, and party favors first can save you some time. Now far as the food, you need to buy those ingredients a few days prior to the party so the stuff you need will not rot or go bad. Say you are making chicken salad sandwiches, you don’t want to buy the chicken and bread months before the party because the bread will get hard or mold and the chicken will go bad in the fridge. Other things like party favors can be bought months before the party because they will not mold or rot. Make sure to buy enough of everything. Do not buy for fifty people when you invited a hundred. Trust me you will run out eventually.

The last step in successful party planning is sending out invitations. It is important to send out invitations way before the party. There are several ways to send out an invitation to a party. You can print them out, buy pre-printed ones and mail them, use an evite program that will email your invite to everyone specifically, hand deliver it to the person’s mail box to show how important it is, or personally call and invite them. After deciding on the type of invitations, you need to get them out pretty quickly so make your guest list and get to sending them. People need time to clear their schedule to come to this party and to buy gifts if they need too. I would prefer sending them out around three or four weeks prior to the event. In the invitations give the time, place, date, and RSVP number. Tell the people to call and make reservations so you can buy enough supplies. If you feel like it is necessary, remind the people two or three times before the event.

As demonstrated planning a party can be a hassle. It consists of setting a date and time, buying the needed supplies, and sending out the invitations. These steps can be revised a little if you find a problem with them but I found that these steps work very well. Benefits of taking these steps are having a good turnout of people there, having enough food for everyone, and it generally boosts your self-esteem when it turns out well.

7 Steps for Writing an Essay Plan

Have you ever started writing an essay then realized you have run out of ideas to talk about?

This can make you feel deflated and you start to hate your essay!

How to write an Essay Plan

The best way to avoid this mid-essay disaster is to plan ahead: you need to write an Essay Plan!

Essay planning is one of the most important skills I teach my students. When I have one-to-one tutorials with my students, I always send them off with an essay plan and clear goals about what to write.

Essay Planning isn’t as dull as you think. In fact, it really does only take a short amount of time and can make you feel oh so relieved that you know what you’re doing!

Here’s my 7-Step method that I encourage you to use for your next essay:

The 7-Step Guide on How to write an Essay Plan

  • Figure out your Essay Topic (5 minutes)
  • Gather your Sources and take Quick Notes (20 minutes)
  • Brainstorm using a Mind-Map (10 minutes)
  • Arrange your Topics (2 minutes)
  • Write your topic Sentences (5 minutes)
  • Write a No-Pressure Draft in 3 Hours (3 hours)
  • Edit your Draft Once every Few Days until Submission (30 minutes)

I’ve been using this 7-Step essay planning strategy since I was in my undergraduate degree. Now, I’ve completed a PhD and written over 20 academic journal articles and dozens of blog posts using this method – and it still works!

Let’s go through my 7 steps for how to write an essay plan.

Prefer to Watch than Read? Here’s our video on writing an Essay Plan.

how to write an essay plan

1. figure out your essay topic. here’s how..

Where did your teacher provide you with your assessment details?

Find it. This is where you begin.

Now, far, far, far too many students end up writing essays that aren’t relevant to the essay question given to you by your teacher. So print out your essay question and any other advice or guidelines provided by your teacher.

Here’s some things that your assessment details page might include:

  • The essay question;
  • The marking criteria;
  • Suggested sources to read;
  • Some background information on the topic

The essay question is really important. Once you’ve printed it I want you to do one thing:

Highlight the key phrases in the essay question.

Here’s some essay questions and the key phrases you’d want to highlight:

This strategy helps you to hone in on exactly what you want to talk about. These are the key phrases you’re going to use frequently in your writing and use when you look for sources to cite in your essay!

The other top thing to look at is the marking criteria. Some teachers don’t provide this, but if they do then make sure you pay attention to the marking criteria !

Here’s an example of a marking criteria sheet:

Sample Essay Topic: Is Climate Change the Greatest Moral Challenge of our Generation?

Now, if you have a marking criteria you really need to pay attention to this. You have to make sure you’ve ticked off all the key criteria that you will be marked on. For the example above, your essay is going to have to make sure it:

  • Takes a position about whether climate change is a serious challenge for human kind;
  • Discusses multiple different people’s views on the topic;
  • Explores examples and case studies (‘practical situations’);
  • Uses referencing to back up your points.

The reason you need to be really careful to pay attention to this marking criteria is because it is your cheat sheet: it tells you what to talk about!

Step 1 only takes you five minutes and helps you to clearly clarify what you’re going to be talking about! Now your mind is tuned in and you can start doing some preliminary research.

2. Gather your Sources and take Quick Notes. Here’s how.

Now that you know what your focus is, you can start finding some information to discuss. You don’t want to just write things from the top of your head. If you want top marks, you want some deep, detailed and specific pieces of information.

Fortunately, your teacher has probably made this easy for you.

The top source for finding information will be the resources your teacher provided. These resources were hand picked by your teacher because they believed these were the best sources available our there on the topic. Here are the most common resources teachers provide:

  • Lecture Slides;
  • Assigned Readings.

The lecture slides are one of the best resources for you to access. Lecture slides are usually provided online for you. Download them, save them on your computer, and dig them up when it’s time to write the essay plan.

Find the lecture slides most relevant to your topic. To take the example of our climate change essay, maybe climate change is only discussed in three of the weeks in your course. Those are the three weeks’ lecture slides you want to hone-in on.

Flick through those lecture slides and take quick notes on a piece of paper – what are the most important topics and statistics that are relevant to your essay question?

Now, move on to the assigned readings . Your teacher will have selected some readings for you to do for homework through the semester. They may be eBooks, Textbooks or Journal Articles.

These assigned readings were assigned for a reason: because they have very important information to read ! Scan through them and see if there’s any more points you can add to your list of statistics and key ideas to discuss.

Next, try to find a few more sources using Google Scholar. This is a great resource for finding more academic articles that you can read to find even more details and ideas to add to your essay.

Here’s my notes that I researched for the essay question “Is Climate Change the Greatest Moral Challenge of our Generation?” As you can see, it doesn’t have to be beautiful #Studygram notes! It’s just rough notes to get all the important information down:

sample of rough notes scrawled on paper

Once you’ve read the assigned lecture slides and readings, you should have a good preliminary list of ideas, topics, statistics and even quotes that you can use in step 3.

3. Brainstorm using a Mind-Map. Here’s how.

Do your initial notes look a little disorganized?

That’s okay. The point of Step 2 was to gather information. Now it’s time to start sorting these ideas in your mind.

The best way to organize thoughts is to create a Mind-Map. Here’s how Mind-Maps often look:

sample blank mind-map

For your essay plan Mind-Map, write the essay question in the middle of the page and draw a circle around it.

mind-map with essay question written in center

Then, select the biggest and most important key ideas that you think are worth discussing in the essay. To decide on these, you might want to look back at the notes you took in Step 2.

Each key idea will take up around about 200 – 350 words (1 to 2 sentences).

Here’s a rough guide for how many key ideas you’ll want depending on your essay length:

  • 1000-word essay: 3 to 4 key ideas
  • 1500-word essay: 5 to 7 key ideas
  • 2000-word essay: 6 to 8 key ideas
  • 3000-word essay: 9 to 12 key ideas

Once you’ve selected your key ideas you can list them in a circle around the essay question, just like this:

mind map with essay question and key ideas filled-in

Last, we need to add detail and depth to each key idea. So, draw more lines out from each key ideas and list:

  • Two sources that you will cite for each key idea;
  • A statistic or example that you will provide for each key idea;
  • Any additional interesting facts for each key idea

Here’s how it might look once you’re done:

completed mind-map

4. Arrange your Topics. Here’s how.

You’re well and truly on your way to getting your essay down on paper now.

There’s one last thing to do before you start getting words down on the manuscript that you will submit. You need to arrange your topics to decide which to write first, second, third, fourth, and last!

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Start and end with your strongest points;
  • Ensure the points logically flow.

To ensure your points logically flow, think about how you’re going to transition from one idea to the next . Does one key point need to be made first so that the other ones make sense?

Do two key points seem to fit next to one another? If so, make sure you list them side-by-side.

Have a play around with the order you want to discuss the ideas until you’re comfortable. Then, list them in order. Here’s my order for my Climate Change essay:

Each of these key ideas is going to turn into a paragraph or two (probably two) in the essay.

5. Write your topic Sentences in just 5 minutes. Here’s how.

All good essays have clear paragraphs that start with a topic sentence . To turn these brainstormed key points into an essay, you need to get that list you wrote in Step 5 and turn each point into a topic sentence for a paragraph.

It’s important that the first sentence of each paragraph clearly states the paragraph’s topic. Your marker is going to want to know exactly what your paragraph is about immediately. You don’t want your marker to wait until the 3 rd , 4 th or 5 th line of a paragraph before they figure out what you’re talking about in the paragraph.

So, you need to state what your key idea is in the first sentence of the paragraph.

Let’s have a go at turning each of our key ideas into a topic sentence:

6. Write a No-Pressure Essay Draft in just 3 Hours. Here’s how.

Okay, now the rubber hits the road. Let’s get writing!

When you write your first draft, don’t put pressure on yourself. Remind yourself that this is the first of several attempts at creating a great essay, so it doesn’t need to be perfect right away. The important thing is that you get words down on paper.

To write the draft, have a go at adding to each of your topic sentences to turn them into full paragraphs. Follow the information you wrote down in your notes and Mind-Map to get some great details down on paper.

Forget about the introduction and conclusion for now. You can write them last.

Let’s have a go at one together. I’m going to choose the paragraph on my key idea “Is climate change caused by humans?”

I’ve already got my first sentence and my brainstormed ideas. Let’s build on them to write a draft paragraph:

screenshot of a section of a mind map displaying key ideas for the essay

  • “Most scientists believe climate change is caused by humans. In fact, according to the IPCC, over 98% of climate change scientists accept the scientific data that climate change is caused by humans (IPCC, 2018). This figure is very high, signalling overwhelming expert consensus. This consensus holds that the emission of carbon from burning of fossil fuels in the 20 th Century is trapping heat into the atmosphere. However, a minority of dissenting scientists continue to claim that this carbon build-up is mostly the fault of natural forces such as volcanoes which emit enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere (Bier, 2013).”

Your turn – have a go at your own draft paragraphs based on your Mind-Map for your essay topic! If you hit a rut or have some trouble, don’t forget to check out our article on how to write perfect paragraphs .

Once you’ve written all your paragraphs, make sure you write an introduction and conclusion .

7. Edit your Draft Once every Few Days until Submission. Check out this simple approach:

Okay, hopefully after your three hour essay drafting session you’ve got all your words down on paper. Congratulations!

However, we’re not done yet.

The best students finish their drafts early on so they have a good three or four weeks to come back and re-read their draft and edit it every few days.

When coming back to edit your draft , here’s a few things to look out for:

  • Make sure all the paragraph and sentence structure makes sense. Feel free to change words around until things sound right. You might find that the first time you edit something it sounds great, but next time you realize it’s not as good as you thought. That’s why we do multiple rounds of edits over the course of a few weeks;
  • Check for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors;
  • Print out your draft and read it on paper. You notice more mistakes when you read a printed-out version;
  • Work on adding any more details and academic sources from online sources like Google Scholar to increase your chance of getting a top grade. Here’s our ultimate guide on finding scholarly sources online – it might be helpful for this step!

Before you go – Here’s the Actionable Essay Plan Tips Summed up for you

Phew! That essay was tough. But with this essay plan, you can get through any essay and do a stellar job! Essay planning is a great way to ensure your essays make sense, have a clear and compelling argument, and don’t go off-topic.

I never write an essay without one.

  • Plan ahead : Start planning your party at least a month in advance to ensure you have enough time to organize everything.
  • Budget wisely : Determine your budget early on and allocate funds for different aspects of the party, such as food, decorations, and entertainment.
  • Delegate tasks : Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Delegate tasks to friends or family members to lighten your workload and ensure everything gets done.
  • Consider dietary restrictions : Take into account any dietary restrictions or allergies your guests may have when planning the menu.
  • Have a backup plan : Prepare for unexpected situations by having a backup plan in case of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Planning a party has been a part of human culture for centuries. From ancient celebrations to modern-day gatherings, parties bring people together to celebrate special occasions, create lasting memories, and have a great time. Whether it’s a small intimate gathering or a large-scale event, the key to a successful party lies in careful planning and attention to detail.

One of the first steps in planning a party is choosing the right theme. The theme sets the tone for the entire event and helps guide your decisions regarding decorations, food, and activities. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect theme:

  • Consider the occasion : Tailor the theme to the occasion you’re celebrating. For example, a birthday party could have a specific theme like “Superheroes” or “Under the Sea.”
  • Think about your audience : Consider the preferences and interests of your guests. Choose a theme that will resonate with them and make the party more enjoyable.
  • Get creative : Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with unique and original themes. This will make your party stand out and create a memorable experience for everyone.

Once you have chosen a theme, it’s time to create a guest list. The number of guests will depend on the type of party you’re planning and the capacity of the venue. Here are some tips for creating a guest list:

  • Consider the venue : Make sure the venue can accommodate the number of guests you plan to invite. Avoid overcrowding to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience.
  • Prioritize close friends and family : Start by inviting your closest friends and family members. Then, consider extending the invitation to other acquaintances or colleagues if space allows.
  • Send out save-the-date cards : If you’re planning a large event or a party that requires travel, consider sending out save-the-date cards well in advance to give your guests enough time to plan and RSVP.

Once you have finalized your guest list, it’s time to send out invitations. Invitations can be sent digitally or through traditional mail, depending on your preference and the formality of the event. Here are some tips for sending invitations:

  • Include all relevant details : Make sure to include the date, time, location, and any special instructions or requests in the invitation.
  • Request RSVP : Ask your guests to RSVP by a specific date so you can plan accordingly. Provide multiple ways for them to respond, such as email or phone.
  • Consider themed invitations : If you have chosen a specific theme for your party, consider designing invitations that reflect the theme. This will create excitement and anticipation among your guests.

The menu is an essential aspect of any party. It’s important to consider your guests’ preferences, dietary restrictions, and the overall theme of the event when planning the menu. Here are some tips for planning the perfect party menu:

  • Offer a variety of options : Include a mix of appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and desserts to cater to different tastes and dietary needs.
  • Consider hiring a caterer : If you’re hosting a large event or don’t have the time or expertise to prepare the food yourself, consider hiring a professional caterer. They can help you create a delicious and memorable menu.
  • Don’t forget about drinks : Provide a variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages to cater to all your guests. Consider creating a signature cocktail that matches the theme of your party.

Decorations play a crucial role in creating the right atmosphere for your party. They help set the mood, enhance the theme, and create a visually appealing space for your guests. Here are some tips for decorating your party venue:

  • Stick to the theme : Choose decorations that align with the theme of your party. Use colors, props, and signage that reflect the chosen theme.
  • Create focal points : Designate specific areas of the venue as focal points and decorate them accordingly. This could be a dessert table, a photo booth, or a dance floor.
  • Consider lighting : Lighting can greatly impact the ambiance of your party. Use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create the desired atmosphere.

To keep your guests engaged and entertained throughout the party, it’s important to plan activities and entertainment. This will ensure that there are no dull moments and that everyone has a great time. Here are some ideas for organizing activities and entertainment:

  • Games and competitions : Plan interactive games and competitions that match the theme of your party. This could be a trivia game, a scavenger hunt, or a dance-off.
  • Live entertainment : Consider hiring live entertainment such as a band, a DJ, or a magician to keep your guests entertained. Make sure their performance aligns with the overall theme of the party.
  • Photo booth : Set up a photo booth with props and backdrops where your guests can take fun and memorable pictures. This will not only provide entertainment but also serve as a keepsake for your guests.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day of the party, it’s important to create a party timeline. This will help you stay organized and ensure that all tasks are completed on time. Here are some tips for setting up a party timeline:

  • Work backward : Start by determining the time you want the party to end and then work backward to allocate time for each activity, such as food service, games, and entertainment.
  • Include setup and cleanup time : Don’t forget to allocate time for setting up the venue before the party starts and cleaning up afterward. This will help you stay on schedule and ensure a smooth transition between activities.
  • Delegate responsibilities : Assign specific tasks to trusted friends or family members to help you with setup, food service, and cleanup. This will help you manage your time more efficiently and enjoy the party without feeling overwhelmed.

Planning birthday parties is both fun and stressful. There are many elements of a good party to take into consideration, and the responsibility of the party being a blast falls on you. There are some fail-safe steps to take in order to plan a fantastic birthday party that will have everyone involved and having fun. Make sure that you have fun along the way!

Deciding When and Where to Have the Birthday Party

Step 1 Choose a date for the birthday party.

  • Consult with the person whose birthday it is to determine a good day for the party. Check their schedule and take note of any holidays around that time. Keep in mind that many people travel for different holidays.
  • It is advisable to host the party on a weekend. More people will be willing and able to come if it is on a weekend, because many people do not have to work on the weekends. [1] X Research source

Step 2 Select a time for the party.

  • If you are throwing a birthday party for a child, host it in the late morning or early afternoon. This is most convenient for families.
  • If you are throwing a party for an adult, then an evening party is appropriate.

Step 3 Decide on a budget for the party.

  • Come up with an overall budget, meaning a total amount that you want to spend on the birthday party. Most people believe that a budget up to £200-300 is reasonable, and many feel keeping party costs under £150 is completely doable. [3] X Research source
  • Break down each element of the party (e.g. invitations, food, drink, decorations, venue) and decide how much should be spent in each area.

Step 4 Create a guest list for the party.

  • A guest list will help you ensure that no one is forgotten when sending out invitations.
  • It will aid you in deciding where to hold the party. A guest list of 12 people means you could host the party in someone's home, if you wanted to do so, but a guest list of 50 people will likely need to be held somewhere else.
  • This will eliminate the risk of people the birthday person does not want attending showing up to the party.
  • Having a number of guests in mind enables you to determine how much food and drink will need to be provided, if you are doing that yourself or having it catered.

Step 5 Consider where to have the party.

  • Take into consideration what the birthday person wants. If he/she wants a more elaborate party, then work to plan the party in a venue that enables that. If he/she is into small gatherings with close friends, then aim for that instead.
  • You will need to decide if you want to have the party in your home or someone else's home in order to keep the venue cost-free.
  • Think about making a reservation at a restaurant if your party is of a reasonable size. Most restaurants can accommodate up to about 25 people without too much issue.
  • Another idea is to host the party at a party or banquet hall. This will be a more expensive option, but it can easily accommodate more people.
  • Think about the guest list and keep in mind if any guests need accommodations. Be sure that wherever you choose caters to people who need certain accommodations, like wheelchairs.

Choose a time and location that work well together. An outdoor party in the woods at 5 pm can get cold fast and require heat lamps while a 1 pm party in a clubhouse might get warm and need a coat check room. Make sure you have the right amenities for your time and location and that they complement each other.

Planning Out the Party Details

Step 1 Decide if the party should have a theme.

  • Weigh the pros and cons of having a themed party based on the person whose birthday it is. Would they like a themed birthday party?
  • Consider whether it is a kid's party or an adult's party. Choose a theme that is age-appropriate, if you decide to go this route. For example, appropriate themes for children would be based on kid-friendly television shows or movies, circus, movie theater, a children's book, or carnival. On the other hand, appropriate themes for adults might be a black-and-white affair, casino, a decade theme, or an adult movie or television show.

Step 2 Purchase and send out invitations.

  • It is best to send out the invitations about 3-4 weeks in advance of the party in order to give people enough time to plan for it. Be sure to include RSVP information on the invitation.
  • Sending out the invitations after you have decided on the earlier details ensures that you have the guest list secured and that you have decided on whether to have a themed party, making you more organized.
  • Be sure to reach out to some of the invited guests for help. They can help set up, clean up, provide food, decorate, and more. It is not necessary to do it all by yourself! [5] X Research source

Step 3 Create a plan for the food and beverages.

  • Decide what type of food will be best for the party. If you chose a theme, then make sure the food flows with that theme. For example, a camo cake would work great for an army-themed party, but it would seem out of place for a princess-themed party.
  • Know whether any of your guests have food allergies. If so, be sure to provide options that are safe for them to eat or let them know that they are welcome to bring their own food.
  • Be realistic about how much food and drink to provide based on the length of the party. A party that is planned to be an hour or two might only require refreshments and birthday desserts, while a party that is meant to last for several hours will need more of a meal. [6] X Research source
  • Make sure that you plan for enough food and drink to cater to all of the guests. Remember, get too much food rather than too little.

Step 4 Know your obligations for providing the food and drinks.

  • If you are throwing the party in your home or someone else's, decide if you will make all of the food yourself. If not, then reach out to others and ask for their assistance in providing the food and drinks. A potluck is a great idea!
  • If the party is going to be held at a restaurant, then no real planning needs to be done in this area, as the restaurant will take care of that for you!
  • If the party is going to be at a party or banquet hall, then you need to check with their staff about catering options. Find out if you can bring the food, if they will cater the food, or if they have particular vendors they use to cater food for parties.
  • Decide whether alcohol should be provided, if it is an adult birthday party. For example, if the birthday person does not drink and has many friends and family who do not drink, then alcohol would be unnecessary. [7] X Research source

Step 5 Gather decorations for the party.

  • If you decided on a theme for the party, then this will be easy, as you will simply buy decorations to match the theme.
  • If you did not decide on a theme, then think about what the birthday person would want. Does he/she like a lot of decorations, like balloons, streamers, and confetti? Or is he/she more of a laid-back person who is not interested in decorations? Purchase decorations accordingly.
  • Decorations are not as important for an adult's birthday party, but they are quite important for a child's birthday party. Kids are imaginative, so even household items can contribute to the decorations if you want to save money in this area.<refhttps://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/how-to-plan-a-birthday-party</ref>

Step 6 Choose entertainment options for the birthday party.

  • For a child's birthday party, there are many options. Games are great, but they often require supplies, so keep that in mind. You could have a story time, if it goes with the theme. Another idea is to have music playing. You could also hire an entertainer, such as a clown, a magician, or a scientist, if it is in your budget. [8] X Research source
  • An adult's party can just as easily include games. It would also be helpful to have music playing in the background, either via a disc jockey or via a homemade setup with a computer or smartphone and speakers. If the party is going to be out on the town, then the entertainment could come in the form of a live band or an activity, such as a comedy show.

Step 7 Choose what dessert will be.

  • Most of the time, the birthday person will want a cake, especially if it is a child. Decide whether you are going to make the cake yourself or purchase one from a bakery.
  • Know what kind of cake the birthday person likes, and take into consideration any food allergies of the guests. Have an alternative dessert ready if they cannot have the cake.
  • If the birthday person does not want a cake, then provide what they do want! Cupcakes, brownies, pies, cookies, and ice cream are all perfectly acceptable substitutions for birthday cake.

Step 8 Create a back-up plan in case of weather, especially if the party is outside.

Getting Ready for the Party

Step 1 Arrange your organized help to assist you in setting up the party on the day of.

  • Set up the decorations and food, if necessary.
  • If you are providing the food to the party venue, then be sure to get it to the venue on time.
  • Give yourself enough time to set everything up. Rushing will result in mistakes.
  • Have everything you need in one place, or have dedicated helpers be in charge of what supplies they are helping to provide. Know where everything is to streamline the process.

Step 2 Have a plan for keeping the food hot or cold, depending on what it needs.

  • If the food is being catered or provided by the restaurant, then that will be taken care of by that business.
  • If you are providing the food in your home or someone else's, then be wary of putting the food out too early. Food can spoil if it is not kept hot or cold.

Step 3 Notify your guests if you have to move the party to the back-up location.

  • Have a dedicated cool-down area if a child gets upset during the party. It is best if it is away from the rest of the guests.
  • Have a first aid kit and anything else that you think might be necessary in case someone gets injured during the party.
  • If you have pets, keep them secured away from the guests for the duration of the party. Unless your pets are very well behaved and trained, an issue could arise there, from someone being afraid of them to the pets getting loose.

Birthday Party Essay

Birthdays are among the most significant days in a person's life because they not only state their age but its also about celebrating an individual's life experiences. Birthday celebrations are essential for all of us, but they are particularly significant for children. Here are a few sample essays on ‘Birthday Party’ that students can refer to for their classwork and projects.

Birthday Party Essay

For my birthday party this year, my family and I decided to celebrate it at the new bowling alley that opened in our town. I was amazed with the cool and comfortable ambience. There were 9 majestic rows for bowling. We booked one for ourselves and wore the bowling shoes they gave us. I did not play that well since it was my first time. My parents, however, were frequent bowlers and played very well. They taught me how to hold the ball properly and how to correctly aim for the pins. I was not able to get a strike but did hit many spares. We cut my birthday cake there and my parents sang the birthday song for me. I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday with my parents.

A birthday should be a joyful occasion. However, it looked like no one had thought of my birthday this year. Nobody showed up to wish me a happy birthday when I got up in the morning. I had no messages or calls from my friends wishing me a happy birthday. My parents didn't seem to understand how miserable it made me to be ignored. My mom gave me errands to run and I was complaining about it the entire time. But when I returned home, I got a huge surprise. All my friends and family had gathered to wish me. They had decorated the house with beautiful flowers, cards and gifts.

The vacant dining table was now covered with trays of spaghetti, fruit tarts, colourful jellies, and crispy chips and delicious pastries. Everyone started singing as my mother brought out a huge chocolate-vanilla cake. I was overjoyed with so much love and happiness. We ended up playing many birthday party games—musical chairs, pass the parcel, newspaper dance. My friend won 2 games and won chocolates. It was a lot of fun. That evening, while I was getting ready for bed, I reflected on how wonderful it was to have such a nice birthday celebration.

Birthdays are a significant part of everyone's life. It makes people feel special on that day and deepens their gratitude.

My Thirteenth Birthday Party

I will always cherish the memory of my thirteenth birthday party—we visited an amusement park. All of my close cousins and friends were invited to the celebration. My parents drove us and took us to the theme park. I was astounded by the sight of the big rides at the park as soon as we arrived. People dressed up as clowns and performed stunts that were quite amusing. We waited in line to get on the roller coaster, which is one of my favourite rides. The ride was incredible. It rose to such a great height before dropping suddenly—it was a thrilling experience. We also enjoyed other rides, including a merry-go-round. Before we went home, we had dinner at a nearby restaurant where we cut my favourite vanilla cake. It was one of my best birthday parties.

My Sixteenth Birthday Party

I celebrated my sixteenth birthday this year. In our family, turning 16 is a big deal for women. My parents went all out and booked a banquet hall for my birthday and invited all my friends and close family members. My mother and I went shopping for my birthday dress. I chose a lilac gown with flowers and glitter on it. When I reached the venue, I was astonished to see how beautiful everything looked. My friends and family had already arrived before me and started singing happy birthday when I entered. We clicked millions of pictures, danced to our favourite songs and played our childhood games. My friends made me open their presents and they were all so amazing. My parents and grandparents were so happy looking at me and enjoying my day. They gave me a beautiful necklace with my initials on it and I wear it everyday. I am grateful to have such thoughtful family and friends.

Ways To Celebrate Birthdays

There are many ideas children can come up with to celebrate their special day. But sometimes, we all get stuck and wonder how we can celebrate our birthday. So, here are some ideas that you can use—

Amusement Parks | No matter how old you get, rides and retro video games never fail to impress you. Plan a day at an amusement park, call the manager ahead of time and make the arrangements that suit your wants. You can get a private area booked for food and beverages.

Home It In | Celebrating at your home is one of the common ideas that always work. Decorate your living room with balloons, photos and banners and invite all your close friends and family. You can order food and cake from a caterer and they’ll take care of everything.

Cafes/Restaurants | Birthday celebrations at a cafe or a restaurant makes everything easy and breezy. You can book any local cafe for a few hours and ask them to decorate it for your birthday. They’ll take care of food, beverages, decor, and cleaning. You only have to show up with your friends and family and have a great time.

  • First, no barbeque would be complete without guests. Plan ahead of time, checking with your potential guest for scheduling conflicts and issues. Finding a date and time that is suitable for everyone should not be to far as long as you everyone enough advanced notice. Remember that not everyone will be able to come, no matter how much notice you give them, so do not get discouraged if you do not get as many RSVPs as your originally hoped for.
  • Be sure to check the weather for that type of year. If you live in a climate that cannot be predicted, then you may want to have a backup plan just incase unusual weather comes. You cannot predict things like rain and thunderstorms ahead of time, but you can make sure that you hold you barbeque during the time of year that will be pleasant to your guests. A barbeque in cold weather may hold more negative memories of trying to keep warm rather then good memories of family and friends.
  • Purchase the type of meat that you will be serving at your party. You will want to have a least a couple of different kinds of meats, as everyone attending may not like a certain kind. It is usually safe to go with pork, sausage, hamburgers, and chicken. If smaller children are going to be in attendance, you should consider child friendly foods such as smaller hamburgers and hot dogs.
  • Once you have the meat purchased, you will then want to consider what type of sides dished you will serve. If you want a completely tradition barbeque, you may want to stick with traditions sides. Traditional barbeque sides include potatoes, potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. Your traditional condiment bar should include pickles, relish, and onions. These foods are typically severed at barbeques because they are easy to prepare and store until the event happens. You may want to cook other items, but any barbeque is complete with just the items listed above. Once again, if children will be present, you may want to consider sides for them as well. The simplest approach to side dishes is chips and dip. Chips and dip do not require any cooking on your part, and will still be loved by the majority of your guests.
  • Depending on the theme of your party, you may or may not want to purchase decorations. Festive decorations can be found at any local party or general store. You may also consider purchasing decorations that can be stored and reused at a different time, such as reusable tablecloths and Tiki torches.
  • The day of the party, get up early and start preparing for it. You do not want your guest arriving while you are still cooking or hanging decorations. It should only take you a few hours at most to prepare the area in which you will be having the party, but the reactions from your guest will probably seem as if you have been planning this for weeks.

Canada Re-Criminalizes Public Drug Use in British Columbia

A province that was a global pioneer in harm reduction took a step back after a political backlash.

A man in a red long-sleeve shirt is slumped over in an alley as another man in a black shirt stands next to him.

By Ian Austen

Reporting from Ottawa

The government of Canada on Tuesday walked back part of a program allowing people in British Columbia to possess small amounts of drugs, including heroin and cocaine, without fear of criminal charges. At the request of the province and after a public backlash, people in British Columbia are no longer permitted to use drugs in public places.

Under the changes, which went into effect immediately, adults will still be allowed to possess small amounts of drugs. But they will now have to use them in legal residences, at safe injection sites and at other harm-reduction centers established by the health authorities.

The re-criminalization of public drug use in British Columbia underscores the difficulties that governments face as they grapple with the opioid crisis. Even in a province that has been a global pioneer of the harm reduction movement, an approach that seeks to reduce risky behavior rather than to punish drug users, there are no easy answers.

The province’s coroner estimated that there were a record 2,511 toxic drug deaths last year. Drug overdoses from toxic substances kill more people ages 10 to 59 than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural diseases combined in British Columbia, according to the provincial coroner’s office.

The goals of decriminalizing possession were to enable police officers to focus their time on large drug distributors rather than users and encourage users to be open to treatment. But concerns about public drug use have quickly surfaced and raised repeatedly in the provincial legislature by members of opposition parties.

Eugenia Oviedo-Joekes, a professor in the medical school at the University of British Columbia who studies addiction and public health policy, said the decision amounted to “three steps back” in dealing with the opioid crisis.

Smoking and drinking in public, she noted, are both successfully restricted without resorting to criminal law, and she criticized the two levels of government for re-criminalizing public drug use without expanding the availability of safe drug-use sites or taking other measures.

“Instead of going after improvements, we go after restrictions,” Professor Oviedo-Joekes said. “That’s what is a bit frustrating here.”

“This is a health crisis, not a criminal one,” Ya’ara Saks, the federal minister of mental health and addictions, told reporters. “That being said, communities need to be safe. People need to have confidence of that in their own communities so they can move about freely and feel comfortable.”

The decriminalization of the possession of small amounts of drugs was a three-year exemption that started in January 2023, and was one of several measures by British Columbia to deal with its opioid crisis. The decriminalization plan was supported by police officials and the province’s chief coroner.

The use of drugs in public has long been a fact of life in parts of British Columbia, particularly Vancouver. Statistics from the city’s police force show that complaints about it have fallen since the start of the pilot program, but public use appears to have spread beyond the neighborhoods where it was most common before decriminalization.

“There have been several high-profile instances of problematic drug use at public locations including parks, beaches and around public transit,” Fiona Wilson, the deputy chief of the Vancouver Police Department , told a parliamentary committee last month. “In addition, there have been concerns from small businesses about problematic drug use.”

But, she added, police were unable to act on complaints after decriminalization: “If you have someone who is with their family at the beach and there’s a person next to them smoking crack cocaine, it’s not a police matter.”

In response, the provincial government first tried to ban public drug use last year in public places like parks, beaches, playgrounds and areas near workplaces. But a judge on British Columbia’s Supreme Court brought an injunction against the ban, and then ruled that it threatened to cause “irreparable harm” to drug users by pushing them to less safe areas.

David Eby, the province’s premier whose government faces an election this year, asked the federal government to again make public drug use a crime two weeks ago.

Garth Mullins, a member of the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users, said that the acute housing problems in the city mean that many of the province’s estimated 225,000 drug users do not have a private residence, and safe injection sites lack the capacity to deal with them.

“This is going to force people back into the alleys and into the shadows, and that’s not good,” he said. “It’s going to mean more people getting arrested, getting records and going to jail for simple possession.”

Mr. Mullins also disputed that public drug use had become a substantial problem in British Columbia since decriminalization.

“There is no data or evidence that there’s any actual danger to people,” he said. “So it’s all about feelings and these feelings are being whipped up by conservative politicians.”

Does Israel’s Netanyahu have a plan for a ‘day after’ the war on Gaza?

As Israel bombs and re-bombs the tiny enclave, questions abound about when it will stop and what it will do next.

A Palestinian holds the shrouded body of a relative Israel killed in attacks on Gaza City, on May 16, 2024 [Dawoud Abo Alkas/Anadolu]

The evidence appears to show that the Israel prime minister does not.

On Thursday, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant voiced his frustration and called on Benyamin Netanyahu to “make a decision” adding that he did not feel Israel’s involvement in Gaza should be open-ended.

Palestinian life under israeli occupation: an illustrated guide external link this article will be opened in a new browser window, ‘medicine in gaza’: a doctor’s guide to treating gaza’s sick and wounded, photos: israel’s war on gaza’s children, why do we need ‘an israeli plan’.

Because Israel controls every aspect of Palestinian life both in Gaza and in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which it occupies.

Every passing day, less and less of Gaza is left standing, raising increasingly pressing questions on how long the Israeli military can continue its vicious attacks. What does it plan to do once it tires of bombing and re-bombing the tiny, besieged enclave?

On Saturday, army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi lambasted Netanyahu for the dearth of political planning for a settlement after the war ended.

“As long as there’s no diplomatic process to develop a governing body in the Strip that isn’t [the Palestinian group] Hamas, we’ll have to launch campaigns again and again … to dismantle Hamas’s infrastructure.

“It will be a Sisyphean task,” he said, a reference to mythological tyrant Sisyphus, ruler of Ephyra, who was punished by the gods to spend eternity pushing a rock up a hill only for it to roll back down.

So… does Netanyahu have a plan?

On May 3, Netanyahu published some postwar plans for Gaza online, and they were pretty dramatic.

According to the plans, Palestinians in Gaza – more than 35,000 of whom Israel has killed in this war to date – would enjoy unparalleled prosperity.

A massive investment was outlined, free ports, solar energy, electric car manufacturing and the people benefitting from newly discovered Gaza gas fields.

It would happen over three stages, from an unspecified “victory date” to 2035.

Palestinians in Gaza would run the plan, supervised by a coalition of Arab states – named in the plan and in radio interviews with Netanyahu as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan and Morocco.

Politically, after Gaza is “deradicalised” and the trauma of war “forgotten”, it would join with the occupied West Bank, currently under the nominal administration of the Palestinian Authority, and recognise Israel through the Abraham Accords .

Israel would retain the right to react to whatever it saw as “security threats” coming from Gaza.

Once successful, the scheme – the PM’s office said – could be “rolled out across Syria, Yemen and Lebanon”.

Did anyone like it?

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan lambasted Netanyahu on Sunday on X, making it clear that Netanyahu had not consulted Abu Dhabi on his plans.

Translation: The United Arab Emirates denounces statements by Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, calling on the state [UAE] to participate in the civil administration of the Gaza Strip, which is under Israeli occupation. The UAE stresses that the Israeli Prime Minister does not have the legal capacity to take this step, and the state refuses to be drawn into any plan aimed at providing cover for Israeli presence in the Gaza Strip.  The UAE affirms that when a Palestinian government is formed that meets the hopes and aspirations of the brotherly Palestinian people and enjoys integrity, competence and independence, the state will be fully prepared to provide all forms of support to that government.

Other countries have yet to comment. However, news reports say Egypt, Morocco and the UAE are weighing US proposals to deploy some kind of peacekeeping force to Gaza, after Washington recognises a Palestinian state.

Domestically, neither Gallant nor fellow war cabinet member Benny Gantz has been impressed with Netanyahu’s plan or his statements thus far that discussing a “day after” could not begin until “a complete defeat of Hamas”.

Their statements reflect a frustration among Israel’s political leadership and may indicate some splintering.

Is Netanyahu’s plan even realistic?

On May 2, the United Nations estimated that rebuilding Gaza would be the largest post-war reconstruction effort since the end of World War II in 1945.

According to the UN Development Programme, some 70 percent of all housing has been destroyed and, beyond the trauma experienced by the enclave’s population, would require a minimum of $40-$50bn to rebuild.

No costings for Netanyahu’s plans have been found, making it difficult to evaluate.

Is this plan popular within Israel’s regular cabinet?

Not so much.

Netanyahu oversees an unruly coalition cabinet, racked with infighting and division, and they are not all pleased with their prime minister.

Some members are pushing for negotiations to guarantee the safety of the remaining captives in Gaza, while others are clamouring for the occupation and destruction of the southern city Rafah – which was the last city yet to be invaded by land – over all else, even the continuation of the government.

Is there another idea then?

On Tuesday, Netanyahu’s national security minister, far-right provocateur Itamar Ben-Gvir, attended a rally by ultranationalist groups in Sderot, near Gaza.

“To end the problem [of Gaza], so that the problem won’t come back, we need to do two things: One, return to Gaza now! Return home! Return to our holy land!

“And second, encourage … the voluntary departure of Gaza’s residents…It is ethical! It is rational! It is right! It is the truth! It is the Torah and it is the only way! And yes, it is humane,” he said.

Ben Gvir

According to organisers, some 50,000 Israeli settlers and ultranationalists had gathered to hear Ben-Gvir and various hardliners, including some from Netanyahu’s Likud party, speak of “voluntarily migrating” Gaza’s population for it to be settled by Israelis.

In January, Ben-Gvir along with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, again with several members of the Likud party, attended the Settlement Brings Security and Victory  far-right conference, also with calls for the rebuilding of illegal Israeli settlements in Gaza, withdrawn after 2005, and the “voluntary migration” of its people.

Regardless of what “plan” Israel puts forth for a “day after” scenario, none can be discussed or considered unless its government also clarifies what it considers a “victory” that would allow the killing to stop.

Until then the war, and Palestinian suffering, risks continuing without end.

Change of plan: Barron Trump will no longer be a delegate at the Republican convention

essay plan a party

WASHINGTON – Barron Trump won't be an at-large convention delegate for his father after all.

"While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments," said a statement Friday from the office of former First Lady Melania Trump.

No further details were given as to why the youngest son of presumptive 2024 GOP nominee Donald Trump is opting out of the event.

The announcement came a day after Trump expressed approval of his son's role at the Republican convention to be held July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

"He’s pretty young, I will say. He’s 17," Trump said in an interview with  Telemundo 51  Miami. "But if they can do that, I’m all for it."
