முதல் பார்வை | தி லெஜண்ட் - மக்களை காக்க போராடுகிறார்... பார்வையாளர்கள் பிழைத்தனரா?

நிரிழிவு நோய்க்கு மருந்து கண்டுபிடித்து நாட்டுமையாக்க போராடும் நாயகனின் கதைதான் படத்தின் ஒன்லைன். புகழ் பெற்ற விஞ்ஞானி சரவணன் (அருள் சரவணன்) தனக்கு வரும் பல உயரிய பதவிகளை புறந்தள்ளிவிட்டு, தன் நாட்டுக்கும், மக்களுக்கும் சேவை செய்ய வேண்டும் என எண்ணி சொந்த ஊர் திரும்புகிறார். அங்கு நிகழும் அவருக்கு நெருக்கமான ஒருவரின் இழப்பு, சரவணனை நீரிழிவு நோய்க்கான நிரந்தர மருந்தை கண்டுபிடிக்கத் தூண்டுகிறது. அதற்கான முயற்சியில் அவர் இறங்க, இறுதியில் அந்த மருந்தை அவர் கண்டுபிடித்தாரா? அதற்கு தடையாக இருக்கும் மருந்து மாஃபியா கும்பல் அவரை என்ன செய்தது? இதையெல்லாம் சமாளித்த டாக்டர் சரவணன் எப்படி 'தி லெஜண்ட்' சரவணன் ஆனார் என்பது தான் படத்தின் திரைகதை.

நாயகன் அருள் சரவணனை நம்பியே முழு திரைக்கதையும் நகரும் நிலையில் படத்திற்கு அவரது நடிப்பு நாடித்துடிப்பு போல. ஆனால், அதற்கு அவரது நடிப்பு ஒத்துழைக்கவில்லை. கண்ணீர் சிந்தி அழும் காட்சிகளிலும், எதிராளியிடம் கோபமாக வசனங்களை பேசும் காட்சியிலும், ரொமான்ஸ், காமெடி நடனம் என எல்லா இடங்களிலும் உணர்ச்சிகளின் வறட்சி தொக்கி நிற்பதை உணர முடிகிறது. எல்லா தருணங்களுக்கும் ஒரே மாதிரியான ரியாக்ஷன்கள் ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அயற்சியை கொடுக்கிறது.

நாயகிகள் ஊர்வசி ரவுடேலா, கீதிகா திவாரி இருவரும் 'ஓகே' வான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர். காமெடியனாக வரும் நடிகர் விவேக் (அவரது இறுதிப்படம்) வழக்கமான தனது நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்த தவறவில்லை. அவருக்கு மட்டும் லைவ் ஆடியோ கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தவிர, யோகிபாபு, ரோபோ சங்கர், பிரபு, விஜயகுமார், லிவிங்க்ஸ்டன், சுமன், மன்சூர் அலிகான், திவ்ய தர்ஷினி, முனிஷ்காந்த், அனைவரும் கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு தகுந்த நடிப்பை பதிவு செய்துள்ளனர்.

ஜேடி - ஜெர்ரி இருவரும் இணைந்து படத்தை இயக்கியுள்ளனர். 'தி லெஜண்ட்' படத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய பிரச்சினை கோர்வையில்லாமல் நகரும் அதன் காட்சியமைப்புதான். படம் பார்க்கும் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு முழுப் படமாக நகராமல், தனிதனி சீன்களாக நகர்கிறது. ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று தொடர்பில்லாத காட்சிகள், திடீரென ஜம்ப் ஆகும் கதை என படத்தின் முதல் பாதி எதை நோக்கி செல்கிறது என புரியவில்லை. வெறும் சீன்களை மட்டும் எழுதிவிட்டு பின்னர் அதை ஒட்டி திரைக்கதையாக்கிருப்பார்களோ என தோன்றுகிறது.

சூர்ய வம்சம் படத்தின் வாத்து சீன் வரும்போதே சற்று சந்தேகமாக இருந்தது. காரணம் இயக்குநர்கள் 19 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பிறகு இயக்கும் படம் தி லெஜண்ட். துன்புறுத்தும் காமெடி காட்சிகள், 'அவன் சாதாரண ஆள் இல்ல' என்ற பில்டப் வசனங்கள், தேவையில்லாத பாடல்கள் என படம் முழுக்க சோதனைகளை எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. இடையிடையே, நாசர் வேறு திரையில் தோன்று, 'வெல்டன் மை டீயர் பாய்' என 'பூஸ்ட் இஸ் தி சீக்ரெட் ஆஃப் மை எனர்ஜி' என்பதைப்போல நாயகனுக்கு அவ்வப்போது எனர்ஜி கொடுத்து செல்கிறார்.

ஒரு காட்சியில் நடந்து வரும் நாயகன் அதை கட் செய்தால் ஓடும் டிரைனில் இருக்கிறார். மணாலியில் இருப்பவர் திடீரென அவர் சொந்த கிராமத்தில் இருக்கிறார். இதையெல்லாம் பார்க்கும்போது ஒருவேளை படம் சூப்பர் ஹீரோ படமா என்ற சந்தேகமும் எழாமல் இல்லை. எம்.ஜி.ஆரைப் போல சாட்டை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு தோன்றுவதும், ப்ரேமுக்கு ஒரு காஸ்டியூம் மாற்றுவதும், முழுக்க முழுக்க ஹீரோயிசத்தை மையப்படுத்திய ஓவர் டோஸ் திரைக்கதை முழுக்க செலுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஹாரீஸ் ஜெயராஜின் கம்பேக் சண்டைக் காட்சிகளின் பின்னணி இசையில் ஆறுதலைக்கொடுத்தாலும், சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகளில், 'ஆஆஆ...' என நீளும் குரல் சீரியலுக்கான உணர்வைக்கொடுக்கிறது. 'வாடிவாசல்' 'மஸலோ மசலு' பாடல் சுமார் ரகம். வேல்ராஜ் ஒளிப்பதிவும், ரூபன் எடிட்டிங்கும் படத்திற்கு பலம். இருந்தாலும் ரூபன் தொடர்பில்லாத காட்சிகள் குறித்து இயக்குநரிடம் கேள்வி எழுப்பியிருக்கலாம்!

மொத்தத்தில் மருந்தை கண்டிபிடித்து மக்களை காப்பாற்ற நாயகன் போராடுகிறார். ஆனால் பார்வையாளர்களை காப்பாற்றுவது குறித்து அவர் சிந்திக்காதது வருத்தமே. இதன் மூலம் பார்வையாளர்களை 'தி லெஜண்ட்' ஆக்கியிருக்கும் விதத்தில் டைட்டிலுக்கு நியாயம் சேர்க்கிறது படம்.

The Legend Movie Review: Saravanan's vanity project is more a vibe than a film

At one point in The Legend , which is essentially about a world-renowned scientist discovering a cure for diabetes, a newspaper headline reads, “Yes Cure Diabetes Possible.” Now, this could just be brushed away as plain ignorance, but in a film that revels in its own absurdity, it leaves us with a big question — Is Team The Legend aware of the kind of responses the film will elicit? While the jury might still be divided on this front, this gaffe was one of the many humorous sequences in The Legend , which is both a rehash of multiple plot points from blockbuster films and an extremely unique one-of-a-kind project.

The first time we see Saravanan on screen, he is sending goons flying into the air, even as his well-gelled hair remains intact, and he is dressed straight out of a Khader Nawaz Khan Road Fashion Week. While not much can be said of his perennial poker face, his costumes are exemplary. This keenness on Saravanan’s looks, styling, and wardrobe is the most focus the makers have in the film, which otherwise exists to just fill in the gaps between elaborate action set-pieces and colourful song sequences. To give credit where it's due, the makers do get the basic plot right. The ‘Medical Mafia’ is afraid that Saravanan’s discovery would put them out of business, and they use their entire might to put a stop to it. In between all the paraphernalia, including grating intentional comedy, and hilarious unintended ones, The Legend offers us a 160-minute joyride like no other.

This is neither a spoof nor a parody, and the earnestness of the established names in the film, especially Prabhu, Latha, Thambi Ramaiah, Vijayakumar, Yogi Babu, Robo Shankar, Devadarshini, and Suman lends a layer of seriousness and much-needed gravitas to The Legend . The same holds good for the brilliant technical team of the film. Harris Jayaraj is the soul of the film, and his electrifying background score reminds us of how music plays a paramount role in our acceptance of any scene. Full points to cinematographer Velraj for the finery we see unfold on screen. In some projects, it is important that the audience understands that money hasn’t been a limiting factor; The Legend is one such film. 

The Rajinikanth template is a tried-and-tested one for any new actor trying to break into superstardom, and Saravanan is no different. The love for Rajinikanth is so much that the vital plot points, song sequences, and action set-pieces of The Legend are more like watching a watered-down version of the Superstar’s highlights reel. While the Sivaji hangover is most prevalent, we also get slight doses of Ejamaan and Muthu . But make no mistake, there is just one star in The Legend , and it is Saravanan.

The Legend exists for the sole reason of Saravanan living his dream and being the star of a mass masala entertainer. He is a brilliant assembler and gets together the best possible team to make this dream into a reality. His role in The Legend is actually a relic of the past. While there are scenes where Saravanan sounds a clarion call for feminism, it is interspersed with overwhelming inanity and saccharine goodness that one of my eyes rolled so much to the back of my head, and seems to have lost its way. Who calls diabetes “A sweet suicide?” Also, if you are a person in power in a college, what would you to do a bunch of hooligan students who sexually harass a woman, burn her house down, stomp her father to the ground, and constantly say a sing-song ‘Ooh laa’ at every opportune moment of depravity? Rusticate them? File a police complaint? At the very least, suspend them? But our Saravanan, who randomly appears with a whip (why does he carry one in the first place), and pulls off an Ungal Veettu Pillai MGR, lets them go scot-free because… and wait for it… “ thirundharathukku oru vaaipu ”. Come on!!! They aren’t kids caught trying to copy in an exam. In fact, every dialogue uttered by Saravanan is either punchy or preachy. Even in the romantic portions involving two heroines — Urvashi Rautela and Geethika Mantri who make assured debuts with their lipsyncing game mostly on point — the dialogues are so outdated and cliched. In fact, there is hardly a scene where he just has a conversation with someone. His lines are always addressed to the gallery, who might not really buy into the concept of Saravanan as a messiah, but wouldn’t really mind seeing him as a wannabe whose earnestness is infectious. Also, he gives off the vibe of being a rather nice man. In fact, in The Legend , there is a nice touch in the way they have employed sync sound to bring to life the role of the legendary Vivekh, who passed away before the film could be completed. Although his comic scenes don’t really have the punch, it was nice to see him onscreen one last time. 

The Legend is mounted on a concept that expects the audience to root for the protagonist. However,  here there is a sense of rooting, not for the character but for the textile giant Saravanan himself. It is evident that he didn’t do all the stunts, especially some of the jumps because the VFX is as clear as the green screen used. But still, we clap. The lack of histrionic ability is just overwhelming. But still, we whistle. The audaciousness of the plot is laughable. But still, we hoot. The song and dance routines feel so out of place in The Legend. But still, we groove along. We have done it for innumerable star vehicles before. We have let our better senses be sidelined to allow our basest feelings to come to the fore and enjoy a film. For the uninitiated, the film might be just one big joke, but honestly, Saravanan and team clearly know what they wanted to do with The Legend . They are all in on the joke, and so are we.

The Legend Movie Review Tamil: சரவணா ஸ்டோர்ஸ் உரிமையாளரான சரவணன் அருள் நடிப்பில் இயக்குநர்கள் ஜேடி - ஜெர்ரி இயக்கத்தில் இன்று வெளியாகியிருக்கும் திரைப்படம்  ‘தி லெஜண்ட்’. ஹாரிஸ் ஜெயராஜ் இசையமைத்திருக்கும் இந்தப்படத்திற்கு வேல்ராஜ் ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார்.

கதையின் கரு:

பிரபல விஞ்ஞானியாக வலம் வரும் சரவணனின் உயிர் நண்பனின் குடும்பம், சர்க்கரை வியாதியால் அவதிப்பட்டு இன்சுலின் செலுத்திக்கொண்டு வாழ்க்கையை நடத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இந்த நிலையில் திடீரென்று நண்பன் உயிரிழந்து விட, அது சரவணனை பெரிதும் பாதிக்கிறது. இந்த பாதிப்பு அவரை சர்க்கரை வியாதியை குணப்படுத்துவதற்கான மருந்து கண்டுபிடிப்பில் ஈடுபட செய்கிறது. இந்த ஆராய்ச்சியில் அவர் சந்தித்த பிரச்னைகள், இறுதியில் அவர் அந்த மருந்தை அவர் கண்டுபிடித்தாரா இல்லையா..?  என்பதை விளக்குவதே தி லெஜண்ட். 

லெஜண்ட் சரவணன் நடிகராக அறிமுகமாகும் படம். சினிமா மீதுள்ள மோகத்தின் காரணமாக, முதல் படத்தையே கோடிகளை கொட்டி எடுத்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால் ஒரு விஷயம், நீங்கள் எல்லோரும் எதிர்பார்த்தது போல நிச்சயம் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் மோசமான அவர் நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தவில்லை. முடிந்த அளவு முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார். ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளில் மிடுக்கு முகத்துடன் அதகளம் செய்யும் சரவணன், காதல் காட்சிகளில் ரசிக்க வைப்பதற்கு பதிலாக சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார்.

சிரிப்பலையில் ஆழ்த்திய அண்ணாச்சி 

எமோஷனல் காட்சிகளில்  முற்றிலும் ஜீரோவாகி நிற்கிறார் என்பது, அது சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளில் தியேட்டரில் எழும் சிரிப்பலையில் இருந்து தெரிந்தது. பாடல் காட்சிகளில் முடிந்த அளவு ஆட அவர் முயற்சித்து இருந்தாலும், அங்கும் நம்மால் சிரிக்காமல் இருக்க முடியவில்லை.

கற்கவேண்டிய பாடம்

சரவணன் ஒன்றை நன்றாக புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும். நீங்கள் கலைஞர்களை விலை கொடுத்து வாங்கி விடலாம். ஆனால் கலையை விலைகொடுத்து வாங்க முடியாது. அந்தக் கலை கைவர, திட்டமிட்டலோடு கூடிய முயற்சியும், விடாமுயற்சியோடு இணைந்த பயிற்சியும் தேவை. வெறும் சினிமா மோகத்திற்காகவும், பிரபலத்திற்காகவும் ஏனோதானோ என்று சினிமாவை நீங்கள் அணுகினால், தானே பட்டம் கொடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் காமெடி ஸ்டார்களின் லைனில் நிற்பதுதான் ஒரே வழி. நினைவில் வைத்து நடியுங்கள்.

இவருக்கு ஜோடியாக வரும் கீதிகா திவாரி நடிப்பில் பெரிதாக தேறவில்லை என்றாலும், கிளாமரிலும், ஆடும் நடன அசைவுகளிலும் கட்டிப்போட்டு விடுகிறார். இவர்களுடன் பிரபு, ரோபா ஷங்கர், தேவதர்ஷினி, விஜயகுமார் உள்ளிட்ட பிரபல நட்சத்திரங்கள் தங்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு வழக்கம் போல நியாயம் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். யோகி பாபு பெருத்த ஏமாற்றம் 

சொதப்பிய திரைக்கதை

படத்தின் ப்ளாட் உண்மையில் என்கேஜிங்கான ப்ளாட்தான். சர்க்கரை வியாதி என்று சொல்லும் போதே, படம் மக்களுடன் கனக்ட் ஆகிறது. ஆனால் வைத்து மட்டுமே படத்தை ஓட்ட முடியாது. அதை சரிவர பார்வையாளனுக்கு கடத்த நேர்த்தியான திரைக்கதை அவசியம். அதில் அதரபழைய டெம்ப்ளேட் திரைக்கதையை சொருகி இருப்பதன் மூலம், முழுவதுமாக கோட்டை விட்டு இருக்கிறார்கள் இயக்குநர்கள் ஜேடி - ஜெர்ரி.

அவர்கள் என்ன சொல்ல போகிறீர்கள் என்பதை உங்களுக்கு முன்னரே ஆடியன்ஸ் சொல்லி விடுகிறார்கள். அங்கேயே படம் கைநழுவி சென்று விட்டது  சரி கதையை கவனிப்போம் என்று கொஞ்சம் கஷ்டப்பட்டு உட்காரும் வேளையில், படக் படக் என்று பாடலையும், ஃபைட்டையும் வைத்து சோதிக்கிறார்கள். உங்களுக்கு பாவமா இல்லையா சார்? வி எஃப் எக்ஸில் அண்ணாச்சியின் முகம் தனியாக கழன்று ஆடுவதையெல்லாம் மன்னிக்கவே முடியாது. 

லோகேஷன்கள் அனைத்தும் சூப்பர்.

லோகேஷன்கள் அனைத்தும் சூப்பர். பாடல்களில் ஹாரிஸூக்கான முத்திரை இல்லாவிட்டாலும், படத்தோட இணைந்து பார்க்கும் போது பாடல்கள் நன்றாகவே இருக்கிறது. பின்னணி இசையில் பல இடங்களில், ஒரு இடத்தில் பயன்படுத்திய இசையை அப்படியே காப்பி பேஸ்ட் அடித்திருக்கிறார். இவ்வளவு சிக்கல்களிலும் படத்தை தாங்கி நிற்பது அனல் அரசின் சண்டை இயக்கமும், வேல் ராஜின் ஒளிப்பதிவும்தான். திரைக்கதையில்  சுவாரஸ்யம் அல்லாமை, தேவையில்லாத பஞ்ச் வசனங்கள், பாடல்களை வலிந்து திணிந்திருப்பது உள்ளிட்டவற்றை தவிர்த்திருந்தால் அண்ணாச்சி திட்டு வாங்காமலாவது தப்பித்திருக்கலாம். குட் லக் நெக்ஸ்ட் டைம்.. விட்றா வண்டிய..

ஜேடி - ஜெரி இணைந்து இயக்கி சரவணன் அருள் நடிப்பில் இன்று வெளிவந்துள்ள திரைப்படம் தி லெஜண்ட். சரவணன் அருள் ஹீரோவாக அறிமுகமாகியுள்ள இப்படத்தில் பிரபு, விஜயகுமார், விவேக், Urvashi Rautela, சுமன், நாசர், யோகி பாபு, மயில்சாமி என பல நட்சத்திரங்கள் நடித்துள்ளனர். சரவணன் அருள் தயாரித்து, நடித்துள்ள இப்படத்தின் மீது ரசிகர்கள் மத்தியில் எதிர்பார்ப்பு இருந்தது. அப்படி படத்தின் மேல் ரசிகர்கள் வைத்திருந்த முழு எதிர்பார்ப்பையும் தி லெஜெண்ட் பூர்த்தி செய்ததா? வாங்க பார்க்கலாம்..

உலகப்புகழ் பெற்ற விஞ்ஞானியாக இருக்கும் சரவணன், பல சாதனைகளை செய்து உலகநாடுகளை அசரவைக்கிறார். இதன்பின், தனது சொந்த ஊருக்கு சென்று தன்னுடைய மக்களுக்கு பயன்படும் வகையில் இருக்கக்கூடிய விஷயங்களை செய்யவேண்டும் என்று முடிவு செய்து சொந்த ஊருக்கு செல்லும் சரவணன், அங்கு தனது தாத்தா உருவாக்கிய கல்லூரியை எடுத்து நடத்துகிறார்.

அந்த சமையத்தில் தனது பள்ளி பருவ நண்பரான ரோபோ ஷங்கரை சந்திக்கும் சரவணனுக்கு தனது நண்பனின் மனைவி மட்டுமல்லாமல், அவர்களுக்கு பிறந்த இரு பிள்ளைகளுக்கும் பிறப்பில் இருந்தே சக்கரை வியாதி இருப்பது தெரிய வருகிறது. சக்கரை வியாதியால் தினம்தினம் அவதிப்பட்டு வரும் ரோபோ ஷங்கர், தீடீரென ஒரு நாள் மரணமடைய, இதனால், அதிர்ச்சியடைகிறார் சரவணன்.

இந்த நோய்க்கான தீர்வை கண்டுபிடித்து இனி பிறக்கும் எந்த உயிருக்கும் சக்கரை வியாதி இருக்க கூடாது என்று முடிவெடுத்து தீவீர முயற்சியில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. இந்த முயற்சியில் சரவணன் வெற்றி கண்டாரா? இல்லையா? அவருக்கு வந்த தடைகளை தகர்த்தெறிந்து முன்னேறி சென்றாரா? இல்லையா? என்பதே படத்தின் மீதி கதை..  

படத்தை பற்றிய அலசல்  

அறிமுக படத்திலேயே மக்களை கவரும் வண்ணம் நடித்துள்ளார் சரவணன் அருள். ஆக்ஷன், ரொமான்ஸ், செண்டிமெண்ட் என அனைத்திலும் தனது முயற்சியை நூறு சதவீதம் கொடுத்துள்ளார். கதாநாயகியாக வரும் கீத்திகா திவாரி நடிப்பு ஓகே. நகைச்சுவையால் மக்களை கவருகிறார் மறைந்த நடிகர் விவேக்.

பாலிவுட் நடிகை Urvashi Rautela-வின் நடிப்பு சொல்லும் அளவிற்கு இல்லை. வில்லனாக வரும் சுமன் வழக்கம் போல் கமெர்ஷியல் கதைக்கு ஏற்ப வில்லத்தனத்தை காட்டியுள்ளார். ரோபோ ஷங்கர் தனித்துநிற்கிறார். சரவணனின் அண்ணனாக வரும் நடிகர் பிரபு அனுபவ நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இடைவேளைக்கு பின் வந்தாலும் கவனத்தை பெற்றுவிட்டார் யோகி பாபு. மற்றபடி விஜயகுமார், நாசர், சிங்கம்புலி, அஸ்வத், லதா என அனைவரின் நடிப்பும் ஓகே.

இயக்குனர்கள் ஜெடி - ஜெரியின் இயக்கம் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ஏமாற்றத்தை கொடுத்துள்ளது. நன்றாக நகரும் திரைக்கதையில் தேவையில்லாத பாடல்கள், சலிப்பு ஏற்படுத்தும் காட்சிகள் என பல சொதப்பல்கள். ஹாரிஸ் ஜெயராஜின் ஒரு சில பாடல்கள் மனதை தொடுகிறது. பின்னணி இசை பக்கா. ரூபனின் எடிட்டிங் ஒர்கவுட் ஆகவில்லை. ஆர். வேல்ராஜின் ஒளிப்பதிவு மற்றும் அனல் அரசின் சண்டை படத்திற்கு பலம்..

Legend Saravanan's vanity project is commercial cinema at its dullest

The one thing that JD-Jery get right is in glossing their product to hide its two major shortcomings - writing and lead performances. The film is mounted on a scale that reminds us of big-star movies from the 2000s, and even the plastic visual tone (R Velraj is the cinematographer), and grand but empty score (by Harris Jayaraj) are from that time. Alas, if only had they spent some of the money that they have splashed on the needless songs and stunts for the writing! Forget a wannabe star like Saravanan, even a bona fide superstar like Rajinikanth wouldn't have managed to save this vanity project. (more)

Saravanan's vanity project is more a vibe than a film

The Legend is mounted on a concept that expects the audience to root for the protagonist. However, here there is a sense of rooting, not for the character but for the textile giant Saravanan himself. It is evident that he didn�t do all the stunts, especially some of the jumps because the VFX is as clear as the green screen used. But still, we clap. The lack of histrionic ability is just overwhelming. But still, we whistle. The audaciousness of the plot is laughable. But still, we hoot. The song and dance routines feel so out of place in The Legend. But still, we groove along. We have done it for innumerable star vehicles before. We have let our better senses be sidelined to allow our basest feelings to come to the fore and enjoy a film. For the uninitiated, the film might be just one big joke, but honestly, Saravanan and team clearly know what they wanted to do with The Legend. They are all in on the joke, and so are we. (more)

An absurd, campy Saravana Stores advertisement

The experience of watching The Legend on a packed screen is a rather enjoyable one. You read that right. For instance, when Saravanan suffers a terrible loss and cries his heart out, the audience bursts into laughter. This happens every time the actor is forced into an intense situation that requires him to emote much. Perhaps the ghosts of his popular trolls have followed him to the big screen, and like his previous attempts, this might end up working in his favour given how bizarre it is to watch a campy film as such with no care in the world. An elaborate advertisement of a bloated ego

JD and Jerry have made much better ad films, and The Legend ends up as an elaborate and expensive addition to their stable. The pseudo movie aims to sell Saravanan Arul as a star. Unfortunately, the attempt is in vain since stars � both cinematic and celestial � cannot be designed. (more)

An absolute boring drama

The Legend is an epic snore-fest. The film is quite disappointing with a lackluster screenplay and many boring elements. The director tries hard to give a proper masala entertainer but he fails to do so. The amazing production values and the lovely heroines are the saving grace in this routine drama. You can skip it and wait for another good film this weekend. (more)

Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.

Vandiyadevan soon falls in with a religious man, Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram), another spy who also provides some comic relief. Together, they discover a plot to take the crown from the ailing king Sundara Chola and give it to his nephew, who had been passed over. Among those trying to use Vandiyadevan is the beautiful Nandini ( Aishwariya Rai Bachchan ), who uses her looks to get her husband, commander Chinna Pazhuvettariyar (R. Parthiban).

Things get more involved as the film goes along, of course, but Ratnam keeps the different strands moving at a fast enough pace so that you don’t notice the nearly three-hour running time. Nor does it matter that the titular Ponniyan Selvan doesn’t make an appearance until nearly the intermission.

DP Ravi Varman does justice to the sweep of the story, while CG battle scenes are staged like set-pieces from the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, a comparison underscored by Rahman’s soaring music. The below-the-line work is top-notch throughout — not just with camera and music, but also in the production design (Thotta Tharani). The Cholas were famous for the temples they built, with the Thanjavur temple standing even now as a testament to their artistry.

Augmented with excellent visual effects, sets representing the city of Thanjavur, the new city of Kanchi and Sri Lanka, bring to life Kalki’s prose that enchanted so many readers. Similarly fine attention to detail went into the costume design, hair and makeup, as well as the jewelry (pieces of which are now offered on sale) for not only the princes and other nobles but also the ladies from Nandini to the princess Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan).

Ratnam has always had a knack for drawing out the best performances from Rai Bachchan (with whom he collaborated on “Iruvar,” “Guru” and “Raavanan”), doing so once again in the star’s first screen role since 2018, even if her dialogue is spoken by Deepa Venkat. In the role of Vandiyadevan, Karthi brings exuberant action to the film; Ravi charms as Arunmozhi; and Vikram and Parthiban exhibit dangerous intent. Rai Bachchan is suitably scheming, as is Krishnan as the princess who only cares about the Chola kingdom and is jealous (with reason) of Nandini’s beauty and ability to beguile.

The film ends on a cliffhanger. While not yet shot, Part Two has been announced and is expected to be released in 2023.
