UGC NET Syllabus 2024 is prescribed by the University Grants Commission along with the notification. Aspirants who are planning to fill out the UGC NET Application Form for the June 2024 session must be conversant with the detailed syllabus. The exam is divided into two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. While Paper 1 is compulsory for all candidates, Paper 2 depends on the subject chosen by the candidates. There are a total of 83 UGC NET subjects from which the candidates have to choose.

In this article, we have discussed the complete UGC NET Syllabus 2024 for all the subjects included in Paper 1 and Paper 2. To effectively prepare for the exam, candidates should become familiar with the revised syllabus and exam pattern before beginning their preparation.

UGC NET Syllabus 2024

The UGC NET exam is held twice a year to ascertain candidates' eligibility for Assistant Professor positions or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor roles in Indian universities and colleges. Lakhs of candidates appear for the exam; however, only a few are able to crack it. For the December 2023 session, 9.45 lakh candidates registered for the exam, but only 6.55 lakh candidates appeared for it.

To excel in the exam, having the updated knowledge of the latest syllabus and exam pattern is crucial. With the exam scheduled for June 16, we have provided the detailed UGC NET Syllabus for Paper 1 and Paper 2.

UGC NET Syllabus 2024 for Paper 1

UGC NET Paper 1 encompasses topics related to General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and are mandaotry for all the candidates. Each question carries a value of two marks, resulting in a total weightage of 100 marks. It includes 10 subjects which we have tabulated below.

UGC NET Paper 1 Syllabus 2024 Subject-wise

Paper 1 is mandatory for all candidates and carries a weightage of 100 marks. This exam allows the board to assess candidates' teaching and research skills, cognitive aptitude, and their general understanding of teaching and learning methodologies within higher education systems. A total of 10 units are included in UGC NET Paper 1 Syllabus which futher comprises sub-topics. Here, we have mentioned the UGC NET Paper 1 Syllabus for all the units.

Unit-I: Teaching Aptitude Syllabus

• Teaching: Concept, Objectives, Levels of teaching (Memory, Understanding and Reflection), Characteristics and basic requirements.
• Learner’s characteristics: Characteristics of adolescent and adult learners (Academic, Social, Emotional and Cognitive), Individual differences.
• Factors affecting teaching related to Teacher, Learner, Support material, Instructional facilities, Learning environment and Institution.
• Methods of teaching in Institutions of higher learning: Teacher centred vs. Learner-centred methods; offline vs. Online methods (Swayam, Swayamprabha, MOOCs etc.).
• Teaching Support System: Traditional, Modern and ICT based.
• Evaluation Systems: Elements and Types of evaluation, Evaluation in Choice Based Credit System in Higher education, Computer-based testing, Innovations in evaluation systems.

Unit-II: Research Aptitude Syllabus

• Research: Meaning, Types, and Characteristics, Positivism and Postpositivistic approach to research.
• Methods of Research: ExperimeUGCl, Descriptive, Historical, Qualitative and Quantitative Methods, Steps of Research.
• Thesis and Article writing: Format and styles of referencing.
• Application of ICT in research.
• Research ethics.

Unit-III Comprehension Syllabus

A passage of text is given. Questions are asked from the passage to be answered.

Unit-IV: Communication

• Communication: Meaning, types and characteristics of communication.
• Effective communication: Verbal and Non-verbal, Inter-Cultural and group communications, Classroom communication.
• Barriers to effective communication.
• Mass-Media and Society.

Unit-V: Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude Syllabus

• Types of reasoning.
• Number series, Letter series, Codes and Relationships.
• Mathematical Aptitude (Fraction, Time & Distance, Ratio, Proportion and PerceUGCge, Profit and Loss, Interest and Discounting, Averages etc.).

Unit-VI: Logical Reasoning Syllabus

• Understanding the structure of arguments: argument forms, the structure of categorical propositions, Mood and Figure, Formal and Informal fallacies, Uses of language, Connotations and denotations of terms, Classical square of opposition.
• Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning.
• Venn diagram: Simple and multiple uses for establishing the validity of arguments.
• Indian Logic: Means of knowledge.
• Pramanas: Pratyaksha (Perception), Anumana (Inference), Upamana (Comparison), Shabda (Verbal testimony), Arthapatti (Implication) and Anupalabddhi (Non-apprehension).
• Structure and kinds of Anumana (inference), Vyapti (invariable relation), Hetvabhasas (fallacies of inference).

Unit-VII: Data Interpretation Syllabus

• Sources, acquisition and classification of Data.
• Quantitative and Qualitative Data.
• Graphical representation (Bar-chart, Histograms, Pie-chart, Table-chart and Line-chart) and mapping of Data.
• Data Interpretation.
• Data and Governance.
• Unit-VIII: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Syllabus
• ICT: General abbreviations and terminology.
• Basics of the Internet, Intranet, E-mail, Audio and Video-conferencing.
• Digital initiatives in higher education.
• ICT and Governance.

Unit-IX: People, Development and Environment Syllabus

• Development and environment: Millennium development and Sustainable development goals.
• Human and environment interaction: Anthropogenic activities and their impacts on the environment.
• EnvironmeUGCl issues: Local, Regional and Global; Air pollution, Water pollution, Soil pollution, Noise pollution, Waste (solid, liquid, biomedical, hazardous, electronic), Climate change and its Socio-Economic and Political dimensions.
• Impacts of pollutants on human health.
• Natural and energy resources: Solar, Wind, Soil, Hydro, Geothermal, Biomass, Nuclear and Forests.
• Natural hazards and disasters: Mitigation strategies.
• EnvironmeUGCl Protection Act (1986), National Action Plan on Climate Change, International agreements/efforts -Montreal Protocol, Rio Summit, Convention on Biodiversity, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, International Solar Alliance.

Unit-X: Higher Education System Syllabus

• Institutions of higher learning and education in ancient India.
