“మీరు అలా అడక్కుండా ఉండాల్సింది గాయత్రీ !ఇక్కడి పరిస్థితులు వేరు. ఇండియా లో లా కాదు. ఇప్పుడు చూడండి వాళ్ళు తెగ ఫీలయిపోతున్నారు.” అంది కరీనా కాస్త బాధ మేళవించిన స్వరంతో. “తప్పేంటి?ఇది నా బాధ్యత. అయినా నేను తెలుసుకోవాలి కదా!” అంది గాయత్రి తగ్గకుండా. “అదే నేను చెప్పేది. ఇండియా కి మా దేశానికి చాలా వ్యత్యాసం.ఇక్కడ విద్యార్థులు పూర్తిగా స్వతంత్రులు. తమ వ్యక్తిగత విషయాల్లో ఎవరు కల్పించుకున్నా వాళ్ళకి నచ్చదు.” “వ్యక్తిగతమా? కాలేజ్ ఫీజులు కట్టి, వారానికి ఒకరోజు క్లాస్ కి కూడా రాకపోతే ఎలా? పరీక్షలు ఎలా వ్రాస్తారు?ఇది చూస్తే విదేశీ భాష. స్వంతంగా చదువుకోవడానికి కూడా అవదాయే. అడగనా మరి?” అంది కాస్త కోపంగానే. “అయ్యో !మీకు అర్ధం కావడం లేదు.ఇక్కడ ఇండియా లో లా కాదు. యూనివర్సిటీ యే రూల్ పెట్టింది. పరీక్షలు వ్రాయడానికి అటెండెన్స్ తో పని లేదని.వాళ్ళకి క్లాసులు వినాలని ఉంటే వస్తారు. మనం అడక్కూడదు. అంతెందుకు వాళ్ళ పేరెంట్సే అడగరు! ఫస్టియర్ స్టూడెంట్స్ అనుకుంటుంటే విన్నాను. మీరు వాళ్ళని స్కూల్ పిల్లల్లాగా ట్రీట్ చేస్తున్నారట. ప్రొఫసర్స్ క్లాస్ కి వస్తే నిలబడి విష్ చేయమంటున్నారట. మేం కొంతకాలం ఇండియా లో ఉండి చదువు కుని వచ్చాం కాబట్టి మాకు తెల్సు. కానీ వీళ్ళకి ఇవన్నీ పూర్తిగా కొత్త. ఇంట్లో కూడా ఎవరూ చెప్పరు. పాఠం వరకు చెప్పుకొని వచ్చేయండి గాయత్రీ. ఇలా చెప్పానని ఏమీ అనుకోకండి. వస్తా నాకు క్లాస్ ఉంది” అని వాచ్ చూసుకుంటూ గబ గబా వెళ్లిపోయింది కరీనా. స్టాఫ్ రూమ్ లో ఒంటరిగా కూచున్న గాయత్రికి దుఖం పొంగుకొచ్చింది. ఎక్కడ నా దేశం? ఎక్కడి ఈ యూరోప్?నా ఊరు , నా కాలేజ్ వదిలి రెండేళ్లపాటు విజిటింగ్ ప్రోఫసర్ గా విదేశీ విశ్వవిద్యాలయం లో వచ్చి పడిన నాకు ఇక్కడి వాతావరణం, మనుషుల వైఖరి అసలు అంతుబట్టడం లేదు. చదువుని సీరియస్ గా ఎందుకు తీస్కోరు వీళ్ళు?చదువే కాదు అసలు దేన్నీ సీరియస్ గా తీస్కోరు. అదేంటో? ఒక్కసారి గా తన కాలేజ్ జ్ఞాపకానికొచ్చింది గాయత్రికి. వెయ్యిమంది విద్యార్ధినులతో, విశాలమైన ప్రాంగణం లో రంగు రంగుల పూల మొక్కల, పచ్చని చెట్ల మధ్య అందమైన భవంతులతో ఎంత ఆహ్లాదమైన వాతావరణం? ఉదయాన్నే విద్యార్ధినులు కల్మషం లేని తాజా చిరునవ్వులతో “మేడమ్ నమస్తే” అనో , “గుడ్మానింగ్ “అనో ప్రేమగా హృదయాన్ని తాకేలా పలకరించడం, క్లాస్ కి లేట్ అయితే గుమ్మం దగ్గర టెన్షన్ పడుతూ నించోవడం, కేంటీన్ లో లెక్చరర్స్ ఉంటే బ్రేక్ టైమ్ అయినా లోపలికి రావడానికి మొహమాటపడ్డం , చదువై కాలేజ్ వదిలేసిన కొన్ని సంవత్సరాల తర్వాత కూడా టీచర్లు కన్పిస్తే ఇష్టంగా పలకరించడం.... ఏవి ఇవన్నీ? పూర్తిగా విభిన్నమైన వాతావరణం.. టీచర్లని పేరు పెట్టి సంబోధించడమే కాకుండా విష్ చేయక పోవడం, క్లాస్ అవుతున్నప్పుడు సీనియర్ టీచర్స్ ఏదైనా పని ఉండి వస్తే ఇండియా లో అయితే పిల్లలే కాకుండా జూనియర్ టీచర్లు కూడా మర్యాదగా నిలబడతారు ఇక్కడ డీన్, వీసీ వచ్చినా కనీసం నిలబడక పోవడం, పాఠం చెప్తోంటే క్లాస్ లో కాఫీలు, టీలు, డ్రింకులు తాగడం, బ్రేక్ టైమ్ లో కేంటిన్ దగ్గర స్మోక్ చేయడం, పాఠం వింటూ సెల్లో మెసేజ్ లు చూస్కుంటూ, పంపుకుంటూ ఉండడం, మధ్యలో ఫోన్ మాట్లాడుకోవడానికి తలుపు చప్పుడు చేస్తూ క్లాస్ బైటకి వెళ్ళడం, రావడం చాలా అసహనం గా అన్పిస్తోంది గాయత్రికి. క్లాస్ కి రెగ్యులర్ గా రావాలని, కష్టపడి కమిటెడ్ గా చదువుకోవాలని, జీవితం లో ఏదైనా లక్ష్యం పెట్టుకొని అది సాధించడానికి కృషి చేయాలని.. ఇలా తను చేస్తున్న హిత బోధల్లో వాళ్ళు తప్పు పట్టే లేదా నొచ్చుకునే అంశమేంటో అర్ధం కాలేదు. అయినా తన కర్తవ్యం తను నిర్వర్తించాల్సిందే అనుకుంది గాయత్రి. జాకీ అనే ఒక స్టూడెంట్ తనతో చాలా అభిమానం గా ఉంటుంది. భారతదేశ చరిత్ర, సంస్కృతి,మానవీయ విలువల గురించి తను చెప్తున్న ప్రతి అంశాన్నీ చాలా జాగ్రత్తగా వింటూ ఆరాధనగా చూస్తుంది. జాకీ తో మాట్లాడాలి ఒకసారి అనుకున్నాక కాస్త తేలిక పడింది మనసు. మర్నాడు ఆదివారం కావడంతో జాకీ ని లంచ్ కి రమ్మంది. ఇండియన్ ఫుడ్ అంటే పడి చచ్చే జాకీ సరదాపడుతూ “పులిహోర, బొబ్బట్లు ఉంటాయి కదా” అంది. తను వచ్చాక భోజనాలు కానిచ్చి ఆ మాట ఈ మాట అయ్యాక విషయం లోకి వచ్చింది. “ఏంటి మీ క్లాస్ వాళ్ళ కి నాతో ప్రాబ్లం? నేనేమైనా తప్పు గా మాట్లాడుతున్నానా? ఎందుకు నా గురించి ఆక్షేపణలు వస్తున్నాయి?నువ్వు చెప్పు జాకీ!” అని వేదనగా అడిగింది గాయత్రి. జాకీకి జరుగుతున్న పరిణామాలు తెలుసు కాబట్టి కాస్త ఆలోచించి “లేదు గాయత్రీజీ! కానీ మీకు ఇక్కడి సంస్కృతి తెలియదు కాబట్టి బాధ పడ్తున్నారు.ఇండియా కి మాకు ఎక్కడ సామ్యం లేదు. నేను ఇండియా వెళ్లకపోయినా నాకున్న ఇంట్రెస్ట్ కొద్దీ నెట్ ద్వారా చాలా తెల్సుకున్నాను. మీరు చెప్తున్న పాఠాలు, చక్కని కథలు, పురాణాలు నాలో ఆసక్తిని మరింత పెంచాయి. యూ ఆర్ ఏ గుడ్ టీచర్. నో డౌట్.” “మరి ఎందుకు నీ క్లాస్ మేట్స్ నన్ను తప్పు గా అనుకుంటున్నారు?” అనుమానం వ్యక్తపరిచింది గాయత్రి. “అంటే ఇక్కడవాళ్ళ యాటిట్యూడ్ మీకు తెలియాలి ముందు. ఇండియా లో స్టూడెంట్లని తమ పిల్లల్లా భావిస్తారు టీచర్లు. విద్యార్ధుల జీవితం లో తల్లిదండ్రుల తర్వాత గురువుల దే ప్రముఖ స్థానం.మానవీయ విలువలు,నైతికత, ధార్మికత మొదలైనవన్నీ ముందు ఇంట్లో తర్వాత గురువుల దగ్గరే నేర్చుకుంటారు.మరి ఇక్కడో? పెళ్లి, కుటుంబం ... ఇవి చాలాతక్కువగా కనబడే అంశాలు. మాకు వ్యక్తి ప్రధానం.. కుటుంబం కాదు. అందులోనూ ఇగో ప్రాబ్లం. దాంతో ఎక్కువ మంది పిల్లలకి సింగిల్ పేరెంట్సే. సో కుటుంబానికి విలువ లేదనే చెప్పాలి. వీళ్ళకి మంచి చెడు, నీతి బోధలు ఎవరు చెప్తారు?చిన్నప్పుడే తెలియ చెప్పాల్సిన విషయాలు పెద్దయ్యాక కూడా తెల్సుకోలేకపోవడం వాళ్ళ దురదృష్టం. స్వేచ్చా జీవనానికి అలవాటు పడిపోయిన వాళ్ళకి మీరు మంచి విషయాలు చెప్తున్నా కొరుకుడు పడ్డం లేదు..మీ క్లాస్ కే కాదు మిగిలిన మా యూరోపియన్ టీచర్ల క్లాసులకీ సరిగ్గా రారు. ఎందుకంటే వీళ్లు చదువుకుంటూ రక రకాల జాబ్స్ చేస్తూఉంటారు.ఇండియా లో లాగా అవసరమైతే అప్పు చేసి మరీ చదివించే పేరెంట్స్ ఉండరిక్కడ. ఎవరి కాళ్ళ మీద వాళ్ళు నిలబడాల్సిందే. ఉద్యోగం లేకపోతే చదువు మాట దేవుడెరుగు, తిండి, గూడు కూడా దొరకవు. అందుకని క్లాసులకి సరిగ్గా రారు. కొన్నాళ్ళకి వాళ్ళే తెల్సుకుంటారు. మీరేమీ పర్సనల్ గా తీస్కోకండి గాయత్రీజీ” అంటూ జాకీ చాలా అనునయింపుగా చెప్పింది. కొన్నాళ్లు గడిచాయి. గాయత్రి స్టూడెంట్స్ అటెండెన్స్ మీద దృష్టి తగ్గించింది. ఎందరొస్తే అందరికే చెప్పడం అలవాటు చేస్కుంది. అప్పుడప్పుడూ తమ వంటకాలని రుచి చూపించడం, చీర కట్టు నేర్పించడం, పండగల, పూజల వైశిష్ట్యాన్ని వివరించడం, కుటుంబం గొప్పతనాన్ని వర్ణించడం, కళలని పరిచయం చేయడం ద్వారా రానురానూ పిల్లల యాటిట్యూడ్స్ లో మార్పు తీసుకురాగలిగింది. గాయత్రి బోధనా నైపుణ్యమో, భారతీయ సంస్కృతి గొప్పతనమో లేక జాకీ ప్రోద్బలమో.. ఏమైతేనేం పరీక్షల్లో ముగ్గురు తప్ప అంతా పాస్ అయ్యారు. అసలెప్పుడూ క్లాస్ కి రానివాళ్లు ఆ ముగ్గురూనూ. కరీనా చెప్పినట్టు ఇక్కడ స్వానుభవమే గురువు. క్లాసులకి రాకపోవడం వల్ల ఫెయిల్ అయ్యామని బుద్ధి తెచ్చుకొని ఇప్పుడు రెగ్యులర్ గా వస్తున్నారు. ఏదైనా ఎవరికి వాళ్ళకే తెలియాలి తప్పఒకళ్లు చెప్తే ఎవరూ వినరు, వాళ్ళ మనసుకి నచ్చాలి.. అంతే! భారతీయత ని అలవాటు చేసిన గాయత్రి ఇప్పుడు వాళ్ళ ఫేవరెట్ టీచర్. స్మోకింగ్ మానేశారు ఇద్దరమ్మాయిలు. ఇండియా వెళ్లడానికి కొందరు దరఖాస్తులు రెడీ చేస్కున్నారు. అమ్మాయిలంతా ముఖ్యమైన భారతీయ వంటల్లో ఆరితేరారు గాయత్రి శిక్షణ లో. ఒక రోజు పాఠం చెప్తూ మధ్యలో “భారతీయ సంస్కృతి మీకు నచ్చుతుందా” అని గాయత్రి అడిగిన ప్రశ్నకి అందరూ తలలు అడ్డంగా తిప్పారు కాఫీలు తాగుతూ..””అంటే నేను మీకు బలవంతంగా రుద్దుతున్నానా? అని అడగ్గానే నిలువుగా తలలాడించారు. “పోనీ నేనిచ్చిన హోమ్ వర్క్అయినా చేశారా?” అన్నదానికి మళ్ళీ అడ్డంగా తిప్పారు. గాయత్రి జేవురించిన మొహం తో స్టాఫ్ రూం లోకి వెళ్లిపోయింది ఒక్కసారిగా. “ఏంటి క్లాస్ మధ్య లో వచ్చారు?” అనడిగింది అక్కడే ఉన్న లిలి. “ఏంటో ఎంత ప్రేమగా ఉన్నా, ఎంత బాగా వాళ్ళకి అర్ధమయ్యేలా పాఠాలు చెప్తున్నా ఈ పిల్లలికి ఏ మాత్రం గౌరవ మర్యాదల్లేవు.”..అని జరిగింది చెప్పగానే పెద్దగా నవ్వేసింది లిలి. “ఓ గాయత్రీ.. ఎంత పొరపాటు పడ్డారు ?ఇక్కడ తల అడ్డంగా ఊపితే అవునని, నిలువుగా ఊపితే కాదని అర్ధం. ఇప్పుడొకసారి మళ్ళీ రివైండ్ చేసుకోండి ... కరెక్ట్ ఆన్సర్ వస్తుంది” అనగానే తన తప్పు తెల్సి నాలుక్కరుచుకొని ఏదో పుస్తకం కోసం స్టాఫ్ రూమ్ కి వెళ్ళినట్టు బిల్డప్ ఇస్తూ మళ్ళీ క్లాస్ లోకి వెళ్ళేసరికి ఒక అమ్మాయి బోర్డ్ మీద ఆచార్య దేవో భవ అని వ్రాస్తోంటే మిగిలిన పిల్లలు చప్పట్లు కొడుతున్న దృశ్యం కనబడింది. విద్యార్ధులు ఎక్కడైనా విద్యార్ధులే. దేశం తో పని లేదు. ఆప్యాయంగా చేరదీసి ఆదరణ చూపిస్తూ అభిమానంగా బోధిస్తే వాళ్ళూ ఆత్మీయంగా అల్లుకుపోక ఏం చేస్తారు?

To succeed in any career interest plays a very vital role. If being a teacher interests you, then you should go for it. As the Sanskrit hym goes, “Acharya Devo Bhava”, Indian tradition equates the teacher to God and has been the key note of Indian culture since ages.

My mother is a teacher and I have always admired her and the respect and love she gets from her students, I want to make a career in teaching but my parents say that it is the last resort of choosing a career option. Whether it is religious gurus , Dronacharya, Kripacharya or Vashisht, or whether it is preachers, Shankaracharya or Ramananda Paramhansa, or whether it is the 2oth century educationists like Dr.Radhakrishnan, Shri J.C. Bose, Dr. Amartya Sen (US resident and Nobel Laureate) and our most beloved Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, India has acclaimed and honoured these great personalities with regards.

Teachers are the catalyst for social changes in the society; who not only polishes the student’s intellect and aptitude but also shapes up their entire personality. A teacher’s occupation is a service to humanity and he/she bears the responsibility of creating a better future by nurturing and proper programming the minds of today’s children.

As quoted by Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad, “teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation.” Of late In India, teaching is considered a stagnant profession with few opportunities for career progression, as promotion in this sector is based on seniority and not performance.

It has been observed that teachers are underpaid and overlooked and the working hours are long when compared to the few obvious benefits. India currently faces a shortage of over 12 lakh (1.2 million) teachers, according to estimates by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. However, contrary to this popular perception, teaching in India is now a relatively well-paying profession.

Prior to the 6th Pay Commission, the ratio of average teacher salaries to the national per capita income was 3:1 (2006). This ratio is now 5:1. Lately, India is seeing a steep rise in the opening of many private and government schools and institutes and owing to this, the demand for best faculties is also on a rise. Therefore, it’s time for job seekers to rejoice including freshers.

Those who have organizing ability have a further scope to become a principal, vice-chancellor in the management level.

Thanks to the pay commission, teacher’s today get salaries that are pretty comparable to the industry standards. The pay packet is the best in government-owned schools and colleges. A teacher in central school teaching primary classes gets a starting salary of Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 depending on the class that he or she teaches.

The government schools offer perquisites such as quarters and commutation and medical allowances. Private schools usually offer a higher package of Rs 15,000+ depending on the class, education, and experience of the teacher. For teaching in colleges, you will earn about 40,000 and above depending on your education and experience.
