Quick resume cannot be disabled at this time.

Phil Spencer did say he would ask the team to explore it

Be aware that it may not be possible, as it is at the core of the system, and likely also is not a high priority over more critical features

Following Georges’s steps will only remove the current Quick resume. It does not turn it off, and a new one will be made the next time you start the game

You need to hit start on the game and go to quit when you finish playing. This will delete the QR. automatically

This doesnt disable quick resume. It just ends the existing in-suspension simulation. Starting the game again causes another quick resume to start. Your answer is functionally pointless and factually misguiding.

This is a incredibly inconvenient and frustrating feature, it would have been as simple as giving us one button to push in options somewhere. Many games these days have glitches, glitches that most times can be quickly fixed with a reboot of the game, having to hop through all these hoops when you guys could have just given us a button is a little silly, not a major problem, but it is pretty annoying, especially since it's something new you just forced on us.

i would really like to be able to turn off quick resume its awful it will bog your system down and would just be nice to turn off if i want to. but i cant find anything anywhere to figure out how to do that...

Quick resume does not bog your system down. The entire console is designed around it which is why it is hard to turn off. It just keeps RAM active or does a dump to dedicated hard drive space.

There is no way to turn it off at this time

It is a very frustrating feature, it breaks almost every game that I play. To the point that I am in the habit of removing the quick resume session before starting any game. I can't think of anything I have played in the last 6 months that quick resume doesn't break online functionality leaving the game unusable until forcibly closed.

It is such a cool idea, and it would be amazing if it worked. In it's current state having to remember to quit the game before starting a game is a pretty bad user experience.

Having a setting to disable quick resume would be awesome. Although I think 95% of my problems with quick resume would be resolved by removing them when the console powers off or expires them after 20-30 minutes. Online sessions aren't going to remain valid for any longer than that anyways.

I also haven't had a single useful use for Quick Resume. Either my Forza session is completely screwed when i start because of quick Resume, or, if it's a singleplayer, i start where i left off several days ago, no idea what i was doing at the time, i always have to close all quick Resume entries whenever i start a gaming session, it's only an annoyance and has no value for me at all.

What is Xbox Quick Resume and how does it work

Use Xbox Quick Resume to switch instantly between games and apps

Xbox Series X and S

With Xbox Quick Resume you can suspend several games at once to keep them running in the background, even when the console is turned off. That means when you turn your console back on, or switch to a game you were playing earlier, you can pick up exactly where you left off with no loading or rebooting the game. It's a very convenient Xbox Series X feature if you need to suddenly stop playing to do something else, and is the result of the powerful Xbox Velocity Architecture. If you've picked up a solid Xbox Series X deal and now have a few new games on the go that you might be quickly switching between, here's what you need to know about the Xbox Quick Resume feature.

How to set up and use Xbox Quick Resume

Xbox Series X Quick Resume

Handily, Xbox Quick Resume is automatically enabled by default , so you don't need to do anything to set it up as it's already quietly working away in the background. To use this feature, simply hit the Xbox button then select a new game to play, which will place your current game into a suspended state. When you want to return to a previous game, select it from your library and you'll almost instantly resume from where you left off.

This feature will work seamlessly across multiple games, but if you want to bypass Xbox Quick Resume for whatever reason then you can press the Xbox button and highlight the game from the guide, before pressing the Menu button and choosing the Quit option. This will fully shut the game down and remove it from your current Xbox Quick Resume line-up, so the next time you start it, you'll need to wait for it to load up again.

Does Xbox Quick Resume work with online games

Call of Duty Warzone

Due to the nature of online games, the way the Xbox Quick Resume function works with them will depending on the game. Some games may allow you to jump back into the same game mode you were playing before, perhaps even the same match if you're fast enough, while others may kick you back to the lobby or out of the multiplayer mode entirely. As there are many more variables involved compared to using Xbox Quick Resume for single player games, your experience will depend on how the developers have set up their online system to deal with suspending and resuming.

How to Use Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S

Get right back into the action using the excellent Quick Resume feature on Series X and S... no more boring waiting around for you!

Tired of waiting for your favorite Xbox games to load? Microsoft's Xbox Quick Resume feature eliminates the need to revisit the title screen on supported games, instantly throwing you back into the action.

Next-gen consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S have the ability to boot games up ultra-fast. Aside from graphical and performance enhancements, it's one of the main selling points people look for in the latest line-up of consoles.

However, the Xbox Series X|S gains the upper hand by allowing you to switch between multiple games, right where you left off.

What Is Xbox Series X|S Quick Resume?

Leveraging Microsoft's Xbox Velocity Architecture, players can easily switch from one game to another quickly , leaving their current game saved in the state it was left in.

While it's important to save your games regularly, Xbox Quick Resume means you can return to the game at the same point, as if your game was frozen in time. Your gameplay won't change, and you can instantly pick up the game bypassing any launch or menu screens.

Full-memory Xbox Series X|S titles can use up to three save states, meaning you can quickly resume multiple titles that you're currently playing. Although, according to Microsoft's Quick Resume support page , you can resume more titles depending on the console:

Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox console titles use less memory, so the consoles can store more than three when these titles are saved.

The Quick Resume feature also applies to online games. However, if the game is server-based, you may find you get pushed back to the game's menu if the online match or game has finished, timed out, or disconnected.

Which Xbox Games Support Quick Resume?

Most Xbox Series X|S titles support Xbox Quick Resume. But, if you're not sure, you can easily check by launching a game.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide; in the top right-hand corner, there will be a Quick Resume banner. This indicates the game uses the feature and will save the game's current state when you switch to another game and return to it later on.

How to Use the Quick Resume Feature on Xbox Series X|S

Using Quick Resume on an Xbox Series X|S is simple; you don't need to activate or install anything for it to work. Here's how to use it:

  • Launch an Xbox Quick Resume-compatible game.
  • Once in a game, press the Xbox button and use the guide to launch another game.
  • Press the Xbox button once you're in another game, then select the previous game you were playing.

Quick Resume will work even after the Xbox has been in sleep mode, has been turned off, or unplugged.

How to Remove Games From Quick Resume Memory

There may be occasions where you don't want to use Quick Resume, or you want to replace your existing set of Quick Resume games with other titles.

To do this, press the Xbox button to launch the guide. Navigate to the game you want to remove, then press the Options button on your Xbox controller. From here, you can select Quit to shut the game down entirely.

When you launch the game again, it will boot from scratch, allowing you to continue or load your previous saves.

Resume Games in an Instant

Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S consoles is a welcome feature from Microsoft. With future Xbox updates, players can enjoy more performance enhancements and changes to Quick Resume.

For now, though, save your games regularly, and marvel at how the Series X and S still holds the edge over the PS5 by saving game states without taking up additional storage space.

How The Xbox Series X’s 'Quick Resume' Feature Works (And Doesn’t Work)

forza horizon 4 tony hawk pro skater and gears 5 using the xbox series x quick resume feature

Among all of the next-gen features touted for the Xbox Series X (and S), few are more promising than Quick Resume. On paper, Quick Resume grants you the ability to juggle several games in a suspended state at a system level, at which point you can load them in seconds, picking up exactly where you left off. It is—and I sincerely apologize if you’ve heard this pun before—a potential game-changer.

Related Content

The idea of a flawlessly functional Quick Resume sure sounds utopian. In reality, while not quite utopian, Quick Resume is pretty cool. There are just some wrinkles to be mindful of.

You can juggle five games with Quick Resume.

A round of previews from earlier in the fall revealed that Quick Resume could sustain five or so game states at any given time. I’ve largely found that to be the case. Switching between five games— Assassin’s Creed , Tell Me Why , Halo: The Master Chief Collection , Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater , and Wizard of Legend —all in one session has proved no issue. There seems to be a time limit, though. When I tried to jump back into Tell Me Why days after I last played it, I had to reopen the game from scratch. Thank the coding gods for autosave!

That said, don’t count on Quick Resume to balance your entire library at once. Juggling six games or more seems to cause the feature to sputter out, though not in any notable way. It’s more that, without warning or a heads up of any sort, some games just need to go through the entire startup phase the next time you open them up. (I’ve found that larger games tend to get dropped first.)

There’s another caveat. As noted in our review of Microsoft’s new machines , Quick Resume is still a work in progress and has been partially deactivated as launch day looms. Microsoft informed us on Wednesday that they’d discovered an issue with some games that are receiving next-gen upgrades; as a result, Quick Resume support has been temporarily turned off for those games. Sure enough, we’re now seeing it work with fewer games. Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totilo has been testing it out on the Series S. It works just fine for some games ( Batman Arkham Knight , the new Assassin’s Creed , the awesome Tony Hawk remasters) but not at all for others ( Gears 5 , Forza Horizon 4 ). Oddly, just last night, I was able to use Quick Resume to swap to both of those games on my Series X—but earlier in the week, I wasn’t able to do so with Forza Horizon 4 . Things are clearly in flux. Microsoft PR tells us that a system update timed to launch day should address some of this, but that games will also need individual updates, and it sounds like those updates will be coming after launch. We don’t know the timeframe.

Quick Resume doesn’t work for every game.

Quick Resume functions automatically in the background. You don’t have to toggle it on in the settings or otherwise dig through an arcane web of menus to activate it. It just sort of happens—or doesn’t happen.

Microsoft has not bothered to make it obvious if a game supports Quick Resume, perhaps because they just assumed it’d be available for the vast majority of games. From what we can tell, you’ll figure out which ones work by simply trying to use Quick Resume with them. After you’ve started a game and try switching to it with Quick Resume, you’ll see a badge on the upper right as the game loads in (takes maybe nine seconds). The badge even has a neat little “play” symbol, to really drive the point home:

Image for article titled How The Xbox Series X’s 'Quick Resume' Feature Works (And Doesn’t Work)

You sort of have to play a memory game in your head about which games do and don’t support the feature. (You’ll pick it up quickly.) As far as I can tell, there’s no tidy menu on the Xbox UI that shows you which games your system is currently juggling with Quick Resume. You can still switch between games on the fly by using the universal Xbox menu—just like you can with the Xbox One—but you’ll get taken back to the title screen of any game that doesn’t work with Quick Resume. Remember that before trying to bounce between games with abandon. And make sure to manually save often!

With some games, Quick Resume straight-up doesn’t work. For example: Whenever I’ve tried to switch to Cake Bash —an awesome free-for-all party game that’s more or less a Mario Party mini-game compendium on a sugar rush—I’ve had to go through all of the startup screens each time. At the moment, the same thing is true for Destiny 2 and The Outer Worlds .

Keep in mind that all of this testing was conducted during a pre-release window. Microsoft says some games that don’t support Quick Resume will add functionality for the feature after launch. (We’ve reached out for a full list of games that currently do not and will not work with Quick Resume but, at press time, Microsoft did not provide one.)

You’ll get booted from multiplayer or other online-connected games.

Trying to make use of Quick Resume during a multiplayer game might be a little weird. How many people are really planning on dipping out of a round of Halo to, say, repaint a car in Forza Horizon 4 before jumping back in the fray? Still, the point remains: If you try to switch games during a Halo 4 match, expect a one-way trip to the lobby.

Destiny 2 , a multiplayer game that requires constant connectivity but is often enjoyed as a single-player, player-vs.-environment experience, is even more strict. Even when I’ve just been hovering in orbit—and not standing on any shared world alongside other players—I’ve been sent right back to the title screen. Solo Guardians, take note.

Your game stays suspended even if you unplug your console.

When Microsoft first made the Series X available to press, during those early fall previews, you might have heard word that Quick Resume works even if the console is cut off from power. In my experience, I’ve found that to be the case—to a point.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve left my Series X unplugged for a half an hour (or more) on multiple occasions. Each time I’ve returned to a once-dormant Xbox Series X, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has had to start up fresh. With other games, though, it’s seamless—and doesn’t even spur longer load times. One of the games I was testing took about 8.1 seconds to switch to with Quick Resume. Following a period of total power-off, that actually dipped to 7.5 seconds. For Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 , those figures were 8.4 and 8.2. With Wizard of Legend , the best cooperative roguelike, they were 5.2 and 4.9.

As with the multiplayer thing, the use case here isn’t enormous. But as a failsafe against unpredictable circumstances—say, power outages, chew-happy pets, or children who have a penchant for unplugging random cables—it’s nice to have.

That, at the end of the day, is the selling point of Quick Resume. It won’t change your life in some immediately obvious way. But then you’ll pivot from busting heads in Assassin’s Creed to busting heads in Gears 5 . You’ll realize how little time you spent sitting there, waiting for your game to load. And then it’ll become apparent that Quick Resume is one of those features you never knew you wanted, and one that, when it works, works exactly as intended: a small thing that allows you to spend your entire time playing games actually playing games. Unless you try to bounce between seven games at once.

How to use Quick Resume on Xbox Series X and Series S

You can jump seamlessly between applications and games with the new feature for the Xbox Series X and Series S.

Anyone who’s been lucky enough to snatch up an Xbox Series X or a Series S may have heard of Quick Resume, the new feature that allows you to jump between games without restarting them.

Keep reading to find out what Quick Resume is and how you can use it to make the most out of the latest Xbox console.

What is Quick Resume?

Quick Resume is a feature that takes advantage of the Xbox Velocity Architecture in the next-gen Xbox console, allowing you to easily switch between games without needing to reload the application.

So if you wanted to switch from one game to another, the consoles will keep the save of the current game, so when you return you can pick up right where you left off.

You can do this with a maximum of three store saves at once, meaning you can have three games opened at once to flip through if you wanted.

Also keep in mind that while Quick Resume does work for online games, you might not pick up exactly where you left off in some titles, and some may push you to the menu instead of loading the game up straight away.

Microsoft does recommend that you do save your game each time you do something else on your console, as losing a save for Quick Resume will result in all unsaved data being lost.

The Xbox Series X / S’s handy Quick Resume feature, which suspends supported games so that they boot up more quickly when you come back to them later, is getting some nice improvements in the May Xbox update.

Once the update is installed on your console, you’ll be able to see which games are kept in Quick Resume with a new tag, and you’ll also be able to make a group of games in Quick Resume so you have access to all of them in a single spot. Microsoft is also promising that Quick Resume will have “improved reliability and faster load times,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Hildebrandt said in a blog post .

The new update also adds passthrough audio for media apps like Disney Plus and Apple TV, meaning that audio from those apps can be sent directly to a compatible HDMI device. There are also new parental settings that let parents unblock multiplayer mode for individual games and a new dynamic background.

The May update should be rolling out now, and it might already be available for you. While writing this story, I booted up my Series X and it installed.

Microsoft also announced that it will be sunsetting the Xbox One SmartGlass app for PC starting in June. “This means the SmartGlass app will be removed from the Windows Store and there will be no further updates for those who have the app already downloaded to their devices,” Microsoft said.

How to Switch Between Games With Quick Resume on Xbox Series X/S

The xbox series x and series s allow you to quickly suspend and switch games without needing to relaunch or reload. here's how to play multiple games at one time..

Whitson Gordon

If you like to bounce between a few games at a time, Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S have a treat for you. A feature called Quick Resume lets you start playing one game, then switch over to another, picking up right where you left off in seconds—without having to close out of one game and reload the other from scratch.

Essentially, Quick Resume takes the content of the Xbox's RAM and dumps it to the hard drive—not unlike when your computer goes into hibernation. This preserves the exact moment in time you exited the game, with your character standing in the exact same spot.

Then, when you switch back to that title later on, you are brought right back to where you stopped, as if no time has passed. And thanks to the insanely fast SSD in the Xbox, it all happens in a few seconds; No relaunching, loading, or waiting. Here's how the feature works.

How Many Games Can Be Suspended at Once?

xbox quick resume feature

Quick Resume can store up to three Series X/S games at a time. However, If you have any backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox games running, you can get a few additional titles running at the same time. In a post-launch update, Microsoft showed that the feature can hold five (recent) games at one time.

What Games Are Supported?

While there is no official list of supported titles, Microsoft says it is available across "most" of its most-played games. However, Quick Resume does not work with all games. More games are being made compatible all the time, so it's unlikely you will run into any issues unless you're playing something very obscure.

Also, for obvious reasons, online multiplayer games are not supported. This means that you can't log into an online match, then suspend the game and play something else mid-match.

How to Switch Between Games

xbox quick resume

You don't have to do anything special to use Quick Resume—there are no settings to change, no requirements to remember, or any combination of buttons to press. Instead, it just works: Press the Xbox button on your controller and launch another game from the Guide Menu.

From the Guide Menu, you will see your most recent games and apps in a list, but you can also click My Games & Apps , then choose See All to view other games you have installed but opened less recently. Alternatively, you can go directly to the home screen and select a new game from there.

How to Manage Your Quick Resume Games

quick resume group

In a post-launch update, Xbox introduced a Quick Resume Group that will list all the games you currently have suspended in one place. For easy access, make sure this group is added to your home screen. Click the View button on your controller when on the home screen, then click Add More to Home and make sure the Quick Resume Group is added.

You can open your suspended game if you hover over its icon and click the Menu button on the controller. You can choose Pin to Quick Resume to pin the title in the Quick Resume Group menu.

You can also remove a game from Quick Resume and exit out of it completely by navigating to it in the Guide menu or on the home screen. Press the Menu button, then select Quit (when in a game) or Remove From Quick Resume (when

Remember to Save Your Game

It should be noted that Quick Resume is not a replacement for saving your game. While the feature saves your place in the game, it does not actually create new recoverable save data. The same golden gaming rule applies as it always has—save manually and save often.

Suspended games should remain even if you shut down and unplug your console, but glitches have been known to happen. In other words, don't expect Quick Resume to work flawlessly every time you hop from one game to another. Keep saving regularly, and consider it a nice bonus that you can instantly jump back into your Forza Horizon 5 race after your kid's done playing Minecraft.

How To Turn Off Quick Resume On Xbox Series X|S

A quick and easy guide

  • by Fraser Gilbert Fri 8th Sep 2023

Did you know that you can turn off Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S ? It's a great feature, but it also sometimes comes with issues in certain games (particularly multiplayer ones), and therefore it can be wise to turn it off entirely.

To turn off Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S, you'll need to use the following instructions:

  • During a game, press the Xbox Guide button (the one with the bright Xbox logo)
  • Go down to "My Games & Apps"
  • Hit this, and you'll see "Quick Resume" with one or more games underneath it
  • Go to the game(s) you want to turn off Quick Resume for, and hit the Menu button (with three lines on it)
  • Now select "Remove From Quick Resume"

An even quicker way to turn off Quick Resume for the game you're currently playing is as follows:

  • During a game, press the Xbox Guide button
  • You should see the game listed underneath "My Games & Apps"
  • Press the Menu button on that game, and you'll be able to select "Quit"

By choosing the "Quit" option, you'll instantly turn off Quick Resume for that game.

So there you go! That's how to turn off Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S, which can be really useful if you're struggling with bugs or server crashes when trying to get back into a game. Even Starfield has struggled with issues surrounding Quick Resume since launch , so it can definitely be wise to turn off the feature entirely in some situations.

How often do you use Quick Resume? Tell us down in the comments section below.

Is this method permanent? Or do i have to do this process everytime i turn on my xbox? (im on energy saving mode for my console)

@LonelyMuthaShutYo If you've followed the methods above then the game(s) you've removed from Quick Resume will remain that way until you start playing them again.

My suggestion is that if you want to avoid Quick Resume entirely, use the second method to manually "Quit" games every time you're finished with them.

New here. I think the quick resume is affecting my Cyberpunk game. I got through the first three steps above, but I don’t see a menu button on the screen. I wish there was a way to to turn it off globally.

Turn Off And Disable Quick Resume On Xbox Series X|S

Quick Resume can sometimes cause more trouble than it's worth.

xbox series x

Published: 26 Jan 2022 12:57 PM +00:00 Updated: 12 Dec 2023 9:51 PM +00:00

Thanks to the wonders of Xbox Quick Resume, switching between games has never been quicker or easier. However, certain scenarios arise in which players may wish to disable Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S .

While the futuristic feature is far better than the old days of closing a game before opening a new one, there are still issues. So, we'll explain exactly what those scenarios might be, and how you can go about it, if you want to.

How To Turn Off And Disable Quick Resume On Xbox Series X|S

A key point to mention is that there is no universal setting that allows you to switch off Quick Resume. You will need to manually disable this feature for each game individually.

As tedious as this sounds, the process is still relatively simple. And you really only need to do this if you find Quick Resume is causing problems with a specific game. You can quickly identify if a game is running Quick Resume by pressing the Xbox button to open the guide. Then, in the top right corner of the screen, you will see Quick Resume . Or not, if it isn't running. If you want to turn it off, follow these steps:

  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  • Go to My games & apps .
  • Select Quick Resume . This will show you a list of games that are currently using the Quick Resume feature.
  • Highlight the game you wish to remove from Quick Resume.
  • Press the Menubutton .
  • Select Remove from Quick Resume .

This will close the game, and delete any unsaved data. Bear in mind as well, that when you next open the game, it will automatically reenable Quick Resume. Microsoft seems determined that players will use this feature. But why might you want to disable it in the first place?

What Is Quick Resume?

Quick Resume allows you to save the state of the current game when you want to switch from one game to another. So for example, maybe you are immersed in a solo run on Assassin's Creed: Valhalla when your friend pops round. You can suspend that game and quickly switch to a game of FIFA . Then, when they've gone home, go back to Assassin's Creed and, in just a few seconds, pick up exactly where you left off. On Xbox Series X|S, you can have up to three different titles in a Quick Resume state concurrently.

This means that instead of having to boot a game from scratch, which can take a bit of time, Quick Resume will resume your game in mere seconds, at the exact point you left it. This can even work after the system has been shut down and restarted.

But while this feature is wonderful in principle, the reality is that some games run into trouble when using Quick Resume. It has led to game crashes and other glitches that cost users more time than Quick Resume saves.

Even though the majority of Series X|S games are supported to use Quick Resume, they are still occasionally impacted by this. It is in these scenarios where you may want to disable Quick Resume, to ensure that your game isn't ruined. Follow the steps we outlined above, and you'll ensure that you avoid any Quick Resume problems.

Xbox Series X is getting a powerful Quick Resume upgrade

One of the Xbox Series X's best feature is getting an upgrade

a photo of an Xbox Series X console

Update: Microsoft just updated Quick Resume , letting you pin two games to Quick Resume, keeping them active no matter what happens in the interim

Xbox Series X’s Quick Resume feature is fantastic, letting you pick up exactly where you left off without load times getting in the way. But it looks like there’s an update on the way, which will make Quick Resume even better.

Microsoft is now testing a feature that will allow two games to be kept in a Quick Resume state permanently. That way you don’t have to pick between some of your favorite games, just because you want to beat all the pesky loading screens.

The feature was mentioned in the release notes for the latest Xbox Update Preview for the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. However, Xbox Insider had to clarify that this particular feature isn’t ready, and its inclusion in the release notes was an error.

Hey Alpha Skip-Ahead #XboxInsiders, sorry for the confusion but it looks like the new feature won't be available with today's update, but will be coming to you with a future update. Keep an eye out on the release notes for when the feature will be available. February 11, 2022

As a result the notes have been edited to remove any mention of the new Quick Resume. However, people were able to get a glimpse of what’s to come sometime in the near future (via The Gamer ).

"Users on Xbox Series X|S consoles can now keep up to two games in Quick Resume no matter what other games are launched. These games will only drop out of Quick Resume if the user manually removes it or if a game is updated," a brief description explained.

While the Xbox Series X allows you to have three games in their suspended state right now, this new update is still a big deal. Because two games will stay in their Quick Resume state no matter what other games you decide to play in the interim.

Quick Resume is one of the standout features on the Xbox Series X and Series S . Because, let’s face it, loading times are the worst — even if the internal SSD makes load times shorter than previous console generations.

It’s also something that Sony has failed to replicate on the PS5 so far, and in the past we’ve noted that Quick Resume is miles ahead of the PS5’s ‘Switcher’ feature. And Quick Resume is switched on by default, so you don’t have to go hunting through the settings to take advantage.

As great as Quick Resume has been so far, this is one of many updates Microsoft has pushed for the feature since the Xbox Series X and S consoles launched. The fact that more updates are coming can only be a good thing.

And if you want to experience it for yourself, be sure to check out our latest updates on Xbox Series X restocks .

Best External SSDs For Xbox Series X|S Of 2024

Ah, that extra storage upgrade for your Xbox . Something every serious gamer dabbles about at some point. If your console is constantly at capacity and you've found yourself needing to delete old games to make room for new ones, then an external SSD could be the perfect solution.

General capacity and faster load times isn't all there's to bank on since SSDs outdo traditional hard drives in many ways. But which are the best ones? As an Xbox gamer, you might be wondering which external SSD stands head and shoulders above the rest. Here's where our guide comes in handy. Check out our top picks below.

Seagate 2TB NVMe SSD For Xbox Series X|S

Western digital p40 game drive, silicon power bolt b75 pro, crucial x10 pro 2tb ssd, western digital 2tb my passport ssd, best external ssds for xbox series x|s.

If you got them big bucks.

The Seagate 2TB Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S is a plug-and-play SSD that seamlessly integrates with the console's Velocity Architecture. It offers fast load times, Quick Resume support, and ample storage for your gaming library at a slightly premium price, of course.

  • Integration with Xbox Velocity Architecture for better performance.
  • Supports Quick Resume for switching between games.
  • Designed in partnership with Xbox.
  • Price tag can be a little off-putting.

This SSD from Seagate has actually been designed with the Xbox X|S series in mind. It comes with a proprietary connection and gets along really well with Xbox's Velocity Architecture to give you a better level of integration and performance across all generations of Xbox games.

Now, the model we picked out for you comes with 2TB of storage capacity, and there's also a 1TB option available if that's your jam. Coming to the size, we're working with a rather compact form factor, which works well for people with larger storage requirements. The installation is pretty simple as well and doesn't really need any additional setup.

The card also comes with a Quick Resume feature which lets you switch between different games and pick up right where you left off when you come back. However, it can only come so close to matching the speed of the out-of-the-box SSD you get with your Xbox , which is a little disappointing considering the price tag. But as far as compatibility and premium-ness go, this one is a definite blind buy.

A slightly more reasonable pick.

The WD_Black P40 Game Drive SSD delivers blistering 2,000 MB/s speeds in a rugged, portable design. With up to 2TB capacity, customizable RGB, and wide compatibility (PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S), it's a pretty cool storage solution in the mid-range market.

  • Customizable RGB lighting via WD_BLACK Dashboard.
  • Compact, portable, and durable design with shock resistance.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface with up to 2,000MB/s speeds.
  • RGB customization not available on macOS.

Moving on to the mid-range segment, we have the P40, which is an efficient and robust solution at a reasonable price point. Again, we picked out the 2TB to offer some stability to this listing. Coming to the specs, we have the typical 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface which gives you up to 2000 MB/s.

Design-wise, it's a pretty good break from your typical SSDs in the market, with a compact and sleek form factor with a rugged aluminum casing, which by the way, can actually withstand drops up to two meters. So that's a win on both portability and durability. But that's not it. We also have some customizable RGB lighting, and that throws in a lot of aesthetic value. The lighting can also be controlled from the WD dashboard.

Now, here's the thing: you can only customize your lighting if you have a Windows rig. Mac users... so sorry, but you're going to have to sit this one out. Outside of this, the drive does have another limitation. While it performs exceptionally well with read-heavy tasks, we do see a few hints of inconsistency in write performance when handling large data like entire Steam libraries, which might not suit all high-performance users.

Best Budget Stream Setup For Xbox Series X|S In 2024

If you don't wanna spend too much.

The Silicon Power Bolt B75 Pro is a durable, high-speed 1TB external SSD featuring USB 3.2. Its rugged design, compact size, and included USB-C and USB-A cables make it versatile choice on a surprisingly low budget.

  • Compact and lightweight.
  • Includes both USB-C to USB-C and USB-A cables.
  • Durable and shockproof.

Ever thought about an SSD that's super low on the wallet yet tough as nails? The B75 Pro is exactly that. It has an incredibly slim profile, yet it comfortably passes the US military-grade shockproof drop test. What's more, it has an aluminum casing that protects your data like a champ. It also comes with a special groove surface treatment, making it resistant to scratches, friction, and even those pesky fingerprints.

The B75 Pro's aesthetic appeal lies in its modern, sophisticated, grooved design, finished in an eye-catching shiny silver. Just to add to its appeal, we also have a helpful LED indicator that keeps you in the loop about connection and transfer status.

Let's talk about size, where the B75 Pro truly wins brownie points. It's unbelievably slim at just 0.48 inches in depth. This means you get a drive that's not just super portable but can also efficiently manage your memory expansion. Now, couple this with its Type-C port and USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, and you've got some pretty decent data transfers and backups. Not bad at all for an under $100 pick.

For working around with a smaller space.

The Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable SSD is a high-performance, durable storage solution featuring USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface for fast data transfers up to 1050 MB/s. Its anodized aluminum unibody core and rubberized exterior offer added protection, while its compact size ensures easy portability.

  • Fast data transfer speeds up to 1050 MB/s.
  • Compact and portable design.
  • Durable anodized aluminum unibody core.
  • No hardware encryption or password protection.
  • No IP rating for water or dust resistance.

All the great things in life come in small packages. The X10 is no different. Utilizing the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, this tiny beast can achieve staggering read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds that reach around 1000 MB/s.

That being said, we're going to take a look at the inside. The X10 Pro is crafted with an anodized aluminum unibody core for that extra bit of toughness. This not only gives the drive a classy feel and look but also adds sturdiness against those unintended knocks and drops. Plus, the rubbery exterior further ups its game on shock resistance, providing another line of defense against those accidental mishaps. However, bear in mind that it doesn't come with an IP rating. That means this drive isn't officially certified to resist water and dust—possibly a downside if you're someone who needs a device that's gonna work in tough environments.

The Crucial X10 Pro falls a bit short in one particular area, though - data security. Despite having some seriously impressive performance features, it doesn't provide hardware encryption or password protection. So, if you're someone who needs to store sensitive information, this might be a bit of a concern.

For keeping your data safe from the gremlins.

The Samsung T7 offers 2TB of storage with USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds up to 1050 MB/s. Compact and durable, it's ideal for quick data transfers and secure on-the-go storage, featuring optional password protection and AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

  • AES 256-bit hardware encryption enhances security.
  • Heat management technology prevents overheating.
  • Lightweight, pocket-sized design for easy portability.
  • Higher price point compared to similar capacity SSDs.

Security is something the folks at Samsung took seriously when designing this SSD. Not only can you password protect your files, but it also offers AES 256-bit hardware encryption. The cherry on the top? The T7 Touch model comes equipped with a fingerprint scanner – a quick touch and your files are unlocked, safe from prying eyes.

Don't get us started on its sleek design - compact, lightweight, and perfect for your pocket or laptop bag. To ensure it keeps its cool during those long, heavy-duty sessions, it boasts dynamic thermal guard technology that keeps overheating at bay, so you can keep working at your maximum.

Of course, all these features make the T7 a bit pricier than its SSD counterparts. And, if you're someone who likes to work in the great outdoors, its lack of IP rating for water and dust resistance might dampen your spirits. But if you're after speed, storage, and security, this baby has got you covered.

A little on the nose.

The WD 2TB My Passport SSD combines fast NVMe technology with a shock-resistant metal casing, ensuring your data is both quickly accessible and well-protected. 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection add layers of security to this compact, travel-friendly storage solution.

  • Cross-platform compatibility with Windows, Mac, and consoles.
  • Durable construction withstands drops up to 6.5 feet.
  • Read speeds up to 1050 MB/s.
  • Performance may throttle under prolonged heavy use.

Looking for a travel-friendly external SSD for your Xbox? Why not consider the WD 2TB My Passport SSD? It's super lightweight, optimally compact, and offers a generous storage capacity of 2TB. You could easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack or even tuck it into your pocket without having to worry about extra weight or bulk.

What sets the WD 2TB My Passport SSD apart from the crowd is its incredible durability. We mean it: this simply-built yet rugged device can handle physical shocks, resisting impacts up to 6.5 feet! So, whether you travel light or heavy, frequently or occasionally, you'll appreciate its ability to protect your data from those unexpected shocks and drops that can happen anytime, anywhere.

In terms of security, the My Passport SSD has got you covered. It's designed with AES 256-bit hardware encryption, offering a robust layer of data protection. This makes it a top-tier choice for anyone handling sensitive information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do these external ssds compare to the xbox series x|s internal storage in terms of performance.

Eh, it's not comparable, really. While these external SSDs offer fast speeds, they can't possibly keep up with the quality and consistency of the performance of the internal storage you get on your Xbox. This is mainly due to the console's custom SSD and Velocity Architecture. However, they are still better than your traditional HDDs.

Can I use these external SSDs with other devices besides the Xbox Series X|S?

Yep, all the SSDs we talked about in this article are compatible with a wide range of devices, including PCs, Macs, and other gaming consoles.

What exactly is the difference between USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 2x2?

To put it simply, USB 3.2 Gen 1 supports speeds up to 5 Gbps, Gen 2 supports speeds up to 10 Gbps, and Gen 2x2 supports speeds up to 20 Gbps. The only thing you need to remember is that the higher the generation, the faster the data transfer speeds.

“Dune: Part 2,” Jennifer Lopez in the sci-fi action pic “Atlas” and a “South Park” episode skewering weight loss drugs are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : A spectacular documentary on the Blue Angels, Shay Mitchell explores drinks around the world and Lenny Kravitz is back with his first full-length album in six years, “Blue Electric Light.”

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— The spice will flow on Max starting Tuesday when Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” finally hits the streaming service. The film continues the saga of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he learns the ways of the desert-dwelling Fremen following the death of his father in “Part One.” It’s also a decidedly more action-packed spectacle than the first film, introducing a slew of new characters including the demonic Feyd Rautha played with scene-stealing menace by Austin Butler. In his review, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote that “Like its predecessor, ‘Dune: Part Two’ thrums with an intoxicating big-screen expressionism of monoliths and mosquitos, fevered visions and messianic fervor — more dystopian dream, or nightmare, than a straightforward narrative.”

— A different kind of eye-popping spectacle will also be available on Prime Video on Thursday in the documentary “The Blue Angels” about the daring U.S. Navy pilots who have thrilled air show audiences since 1946. Produced by J.J. Abrams and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Glen Powell, filmmaker Paul Crowder got unprecedented access to the pilots both on the ground and in the air to give audiences a front row seat to the show. They filmed the stunts using a helicopter with a mounted IMAX-certified camera – it was the first ever civilian aircraft that was allowed to fly in their performance airspace – and, unlike in “Top Gun: Maverick,” there was no staging or second takes.

— The ever-prolific Jennifer Lopez has another movie on the way already in the sci-fi action pic “Atlas,” debuting on Netflix on Friday, May 24. She plays the titular character, a data analyst who must learn to trust AI in order to save humanity, in a cast that includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong. Lopez has said that at its core, it’s a love story. “Atlas” was directed by “San Andreas” helmer Brad Peyton.

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

— Lenny Kravitz is back with his first full-length album in six years: “Blue Electric Light.” (The album follows 2018’s “Raise Vibration.”) It is a testament to his status as one of the last remaining true rock stars, evident from the moment he released the album’s lead single, “TK421.” (The title may very well be a “Star Wars” reference, so it’s best not to harken on it too much — and instead watch the very “not safe for work” music video that partners the funky track’s release instead. Seriously, wait until you’re home.) Last year, Kravitz described the album as “the album I didn’t make in my teens” to the Associated Press .

— You’ve seen nearly all eight hours of Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary “Get Back” on Disney+. Now, prepare yourself to watch a definitive documentary on America’s band, the Beach Boys, on the same platform starting Friday, May 24. (Let the spirited rivalry continue!) Appropriately titled “The Beach Boys,” this doc boasts of never-before-seen footage and all new interviews with members Brian Wilson , Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston.

— At the epicenter of Memphis’ music scene in the ’50s and ‘60s was Stax Records, home to Otis Redding , Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, and many others; a funk, R&B and soul label that celebrated interracial creative endeavors at a point in American history when doing so was life-threatening. Now, there’s a documentary that works to chronicle the legacy of the institution: “Stax: Soulsville, U.S.A.” starting Monday on HBO Max.

— “The Tuba Thieves,” which will become available to stream on the PBS app on Monday, is not about stealing tubas. Well, at least, not completely: From 2011 through 2013, tubas started disappearing from high schools in Los Angeles. Filmmaker Alison O’Daniel, who identifies as deaf/hard of hearing, used these thefts as a jumping off point in her experimental work that attempts to understand the role of sound in our lives. That’s music to anyone’s ears.

— Argentine and Spanish singer Nathy Peluso will release her third album and first in four years, “Grasa,” following 2020’s Latin Grammy award winning “Calambre.” She co-wrote and co-produced most of the album with Manuel Lara (known for his work with Kali Uchis and Bad Bunny ), and it shows. The album is an eclectic exploration of a variety of genres: salsa, ballads, hip-hop, R&B and beyond. It’s also stacked with collaborations, including a delightfully surprising one from Dev Hynes’ Blood Orange on “El Dia Que Perdí Mi Juventud.”

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— A six-part series from Poland called “Murderesses” streams on Viaplay beginning Tuesday. It’s based on a true crime novel by Katarzyna Bonda, about a rookie cop investigating the disappearance of her father who has been missing for one year. Her digging uncovers family secrets.

— Has chef Gordon Ramsay met his match in season two of “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars?” He faces-off against fellow Brit, restaurateur and reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump to find fresh talent in the food and beverage industry. They each lead teams of contestants who compete in various challenges and the winner gets $250,000 toward their brand. It’s like “Shark Tank” meets “The Voice” meets “The Apprentice.” Season two debuts Wednesday on Fox. The series also streams on Hulu, Tubi and Fox.com.

— Shay Mitchell, best-known from the original “Pretty Little Liars” series is serious about her love of travel. Mitchell hosts her own travel show on Max but with a twist. “Thirst with Shay Mitchell” is all about seeking out beverages unique to each area, soaking up local culture. Mitchell is game to try it all one sip at a time.

— Season four of “The Ms. Pat Show” comes to BET+ on Thursday. It stars comedian Patricia “Pat” Williams, known in showbiz as Ms. Patt, who draws from her life experience as a suburban mom who grew up in a rough neighborhood and has a history of drug-dealing. Jordan E. Cooper created the series with Ms. Pat and is also its showrunner. He wrote and starred in the play “Ain’t No Mo,’” which made him the youngest Black American playwright in Broadway history.

— “South Park” has never shied away from poking fun of hot-button topics. In a new special, weight loss drugs are all the rage in South Park. The kids get involved when Cartman is denied access. “South Park: The End of Obesity″ streams on Paramount+ on Friday, May 24.

— For a more family friendly animated option, “My Adventures with Superman” is back for a season two on Saturday, May 25 on Adult Swim. Jack Quaid voices Clark Kent/Superman as a young man who is roommates with his best friend, Jimmy Olson, played by Ishmel Sahid. Alice Lee voices Lois Lane. The lighthearted take on the DC Comics hero also streams on Max.

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice rattled unsuspecting gamers in 2017 with a story in which the scariest monsters may or may not have sprung from the protagonist’s own psychosis. Things haven’t gotten much easier for her as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II begins — it’s not like mental health care was a high priority among the Vikings in 10th century Iceland. Still, Senua is determined to rescue “those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny,” though the question remains: Can she do it without losing her mind? British developer Ninja Theory is promising a “brutal” follow-up to one of the most haunting and nerve-racking games in history, so consider yourself warned. The trials resume Tuesday on Xbox X/S and PC.

— Paper Trail also follows a young woman trying to make her way in the world, but it’s a much less stressful journey. Paige lives in a comfy home with loving parents, but it’s time to go to college. The road isn’t always straightforward, but Paige has a special talent: She can treat her environment like paper, folding it in order to reconnect broken pathways. The result, from British studio Newfangled Games, is a series of colorful, 2D mazes with charming graphics that look like they were handcrafted. Turn the Paige on Tuesday on PlayStation 5/4, Xbox X/S/One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android and PC.
