All matter is conserved in an ecosystem, but energy flows through an ecosystem. This energy moves from one organism to the next in what is known as a food chain .

All living things need nutrients to survive, and food chains show these feeding relationships. Every ecosystem on Earth has many food chains that include a variety of organisms.

Definition of Food Chain

A food chain shows energy pathways in ecosystems. Each ecosystem on the planet has food chains of organisms ranging from producers to consumers . The producers are on the lowest level of the food chain, while the consumers that eat those producers are called primary consumers. Higher-level consumers who eat those organisms are called secondary and tertiary consumers.

You can think of a food chain as a long line that extends from producers to each consumer. Energy and nutrients move along this line in one direction.

Food Chains and Food Webs

Food chains differ from food webs in that they are showing a single line of feeding relationships. Food webs actually consist of many food chains together. A food chain is a linear display of energy movement and consumption.

On the other hand, a food web shows interrelated relationships and multiple food chains in one. Webs are a better representation of what actually happens in the real world because consumers may eat different types of producers, and more than one consumer may eat a producer.

Food webs are not linear because they show relationships among multiple trophic levels for organisms all at once. They summarize all of the food chains and relationships in an ecosystem or community . A food web reveals the different ways that plants and animals stay connected.

Definition of Trophic Levels

A trophic level is a step in the food chain that each organism occupies. In a simple food chain, it is easy to see the trophic pyramid. At the base of the food chain are the producers, and at the top of the food chain are the consumers. Each organism in a food chain represents one trophic level.

It is important to note that 90 percent of the energy is lost between each trophic level, so only 10 percent of the energy from one step is transferred to the next one. Since the energy transfer is not efficient, the size of the food chain has a limit on it. At each level, a large amount of energy is lost to heat.

General Food Chain Types

Most food chains consist of at least producers and primary consumers. Some chains are more complex and have secondary consumers and tertiary consumers. The first trophic level or first organism in a food chain usually consists of producers called autotrophs . These organisms make their own food by using light energy and turning it into chemical energy.

The second trophic level has primary consumers called heterotrophs . These organisms have to consume producers to incorporate their energy into their own biomass. They cannot make their own energy from light or chemicals.

The third trophic level has secondary consumers, which are heterotrophs that eat other consumers. The fourth trophic level has tertiary consumers or apex predators . They are high-level consumers and predators. An example of a top predator is a human who can eat both producers and other consumers.

Decomposers have their own separate trophic level and are in a different part of the food chain. They are sometimes called the last trophic level because they recycle the matter back into the soil or atmosphere. Decomposers allow producers to begin the chain again by moving nutrients and energy through an ecosystem.

Importance of Food Chains

Each organism fills a specific niche in an ecosystem that can be seen in food chains. Do they create initial energy through photosynthesis? Can they eat one group to keep the population in control? Do they decompose other organisms? Are they acting as a predator or prey?

Food chains are important because they show the intricate relationships in ecosystems. They can reveal how each organism depends on someone else for survival. Food chains also display what happens when a problem occurs and a producer or consumer is lost. Entire communities can collapse. Food chains can help scientists learn more about ecosystems and how to help them stay balanced.

Depending on the food chain you are examining, the same organism can be considered to be at more than one trophic level . For example, seals could be considered apex predators at the highest trophic level in certain environments where they eat fish that are primary or secondary consumers.

An example of a simple food chain starts with grass, which is a producer. The next level is the grasshopper or primary consumer and herbivore that eats the grass. Then, the secondary consumer is the frog that eats the grasshopper. Finally, the tertiary consumer is the hawk that eats the frog.

Another example of a food chain starts with a tree that has delicious leaves. Insects are the primary consumers that eat the leaves. Then, woodpeckers are the secondary consumers that eat the insects. Finally, a feral cat acts as the tertiary consumer and eats the woodpeckers.

Food Chain Problems

Many things can upset a food chain in an ecosystem. From natural disasters to poaching, it is possible for the careful balance of the relationships among organisms to be disturbed. If you look at the food chains that have humans at the top, pests and diseases often create problems in the food supply. This is why studying food chains is important for everyone on Earth.

For instance, as its name implies, the Colorado potato beetle eats potatoes. They can completely destroy a potato plant by consuming all the leaves and killing it. Colorado potato beetles are pests that cause serious damage to crops. In addition to attacking potatoes, they can eat tomatoes, peppers and other plants. As humans have tried to control the beetle, it has become resistant to insecticides.

The loss of producers such as potato plants is not the only problem that an ecosystem can face. The disappearance of an important consumer can also affect it. At Yellowstone National Park in the United States, the loss of wolves had a strong effect on elk populations, which exploded without the predators. The elk destroyed vegetation, including willow stands. This reduced the population of beavers that depended on the willow stands.

After the wolves were reintroduced, scientists noticed the ecosystem returning to normal at Yellowstone. Elk populations declined, vegetation increased and beavers had a food source again. This example shows how organisms depend on each other and their environments, and how a small change can upset the entire food chain or web. Sometimes the loss of a predator is as devastating as the loss of a producer.

In nature, we generally distinguish two general types of food chains: of razing food chain and detritus food chain. The Grazing food chain starts from the living green plants, goes to grazing herbivores (that feed on living plant materials with their predators), and on to carnivores (animal eaters).

Ecosystems with such type of food chain are directly dependent on an influx of solar radiation. This type of chain thus depends on autotrophic energy capture and the movement of this captured energy to herbivores.

Most of the ecosystems in nature follow this type of food chain. From energy standpoint, these chains are very important. The phytoplankton’s – zooplanktons – fish sequence or the grasses – rabbit- fox sequence are the examples of grazing food chain.

The Detritus Food chain goes from dead organic matter into microorganisms and then to organisms feeding on detritus (detritivores) and their predators. Such ecosystems are thus less dependent on direct solar energy. These depend chiefly on the influx of organic matter produced in another system. A good example of a detritus food chain is based on mangrove leaves.

All the animals are detritus consumers. These detritivores are the key group of small animals, comprising only a few species but very large number of individuals. They ingest large amounts of the vascular plant detritus. These animals are in turn eaten by some minnows and small game fish etc. that is the small carnivores, which in turn serve as the main food for larger game fish and fish eating birds which are the large (top) carnivores.

The mangroves considered generally as of less economic value make a substantial contribution to the food chain that supports the fisheries, an important economy in that region. Similarly detritus from sea grasses, salt marsh grasses and seaweeds support fisheries in many estuarine areas.

Thus the detritus food chain ends up in a manner similar to the grazing food chain (big fish eat little fish), but the way in which the two chains begin is quite different. In detritus chain, the detritus consumers, in contrast to grazing herbivores, are a mixed group in terms of trophic levels.

These include herbivores, omnivores and primary carnivores. As a group, the detritus feeders obtain some of their energy directly from plant material, most of it secondarily from microorganisms, and some territorially through carnivores (for example by eating protozoa or other small invertebrates that have fed or bacteria that have digested plant material).

But under natural situations, system must always be self sufficient. In fact this type of food chain (detritus type) is simply a sub-component of another ecosystem. And, the above said two types of food chain in nature are indeed linked together belonging to the same ecosystem.

Here, herbivores are known as primary consumers and carnivores are secondary consumers. The second trophic level includes organisms that eat producers. Therefore, primary consumers or herbivores are organisms in the second trophic level.

  • Decomposers: Decomposers are organisms that get energy from dead or waste organic material. This is the last stage in a food chain. Decomposers are an integral part of a food chain, as they convert organic waste materials into inorganic materials, which enriches the soil or land with nutrients.

Decomposers complete a life cycle. They help in recycling the nutrients as they provide nutrients to soil or oceans, that can be utilised by autotrophs or producers. Thus, starting a whole new food chain.

Several interconnected food chains form a food web. A food web is similar to a food chain but the food web is comparatively larger than a food chain. Occasionally, a single organism is consumed by many predators or it consumes several other organisms. Due to this, many trophic levels get interconnected. The food chain fails to showcase the flow of energy in the right way. But, the food web is able to show the proper representation of energy flow, as it displays the interactions between different organisms.

When there are more cross-interactions between different food chains, the food web gets more complex. This complexity in a food web leads to a more sustainable ecosystem.

Types of Food Chain

There are two types of food chains, namely the detritus food chain and the grazing food chain. Let’s look at them more closely:

  • Detritus food chain: The detritus food chain includes different species of organisms and plants like algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, mites, insects, worms and so on. The detritus food chain begins with dead organic material. The food energy passes into decomposers and detritivores, which are further eaten by smaller organisms like carnivores. Carnivores, like maggots, become a meal for bigger carnivores like frogs, snakes and so on. Primary consumers like fungi, bacteria, protozoans, and so on are detritivores which feed on detritus.
  • Grazing food chain: The grazing food chain is a type of food chain that starts with green plants, passes through herbivores and then to carnivores. In a grazing food chain, energy in the lowest trophic level is acquired from photosynthesis.

In this type of food chain, the first energy transfer is from plants to herbivores. This type of food chain depends on the flow of energy from autotrophs to herbivores. As autotrophs are the base for all ecosystems on Earth, the majority of ecosystems in the environment follow this kind of food chain.

Understanding food chains is vital, as they explain the intimate relationships in an ecosystem. A food chain shows us how every living organism is dependent on other organisms for survival. The food chain explains the path of energy flow inside an ecosystem.

When you are assigned a descriptive essay, you’ll normally be given a specific prompt or choice of prompts. They will often ask you to describe something from your own experience.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The animal brain contributes immensely to the normal functioning of an individual. Any impairment with its normal actions lead to drop of the expected goals due to halt of conductions of nerve impulses involved in the management of the organism system. The body coordination in an organism are carried out in the central nervous system that depends entirely on the neurons conducted from the receptor sites to the effectors’ sites in the body. For instance, surprise leads to production of a large amount of adrenaline in humans enhancing an individual to have the potential of flight or fight in case of an approach of danger. A surprised individual tends to have an impairment in the normal functioning of the body (Bardin, 1); this is due concentration of a lot of blood to the brain, muscles, and limbs paralyzing other body functions.

According to the knowledge gathered from various academic fields, including biology, free animals are more productive compared to enclosed animals. This phenomenon reflects back to what used to happen during slavery in early 18 th and 19 th century. The slaves under imposition hard labor were less productive irrespective of their high numbers. This was due to the stressful conditions they lived in imposed by their cruel masters. The majority of the colonialist believed in having more than enough slaves as the only way of expounding their economic demands only to end up with low products.

Animals living under any kind of stress lose weight so quickly. This is due to the lack of enough ability to withstand the stressing conditions and at the same time gaining weight. Research carried out shows that too much straining leads to over utilization of the stored proteins in the body in the form of tissues, resulting to deterioration of the healthy conditions of an organism. In order for an individual to produce more energy for the maintenance of the body, huge lumps of proteins have to be broken down. On the other hand, organisms in the soil depend entirely on the protein products and by-products for their survival. In utilization of the protein products, the organisms break down amino acids into various nitrogen nutrients that are easily absorbed and utilized by plants in manufacturing of the foods. This is because ecology balance depends entirely on the fluency of the ecosystem that is made up microorganisms that are in the lowest rank to scavengers that are tertiary consumers.

In addition, the organism body is mainly made up of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (Phelan, 72). These elements are held together by a diversity of bonds that are easily broken if they encounter strenuous conditions. The body experiences a lot of self-degradation during stressful periods. This is because the body utilizes more than enough oxygen in the breaking down of proteins in order to produce enough energy required by the body resulting to immense loss in weight of an organism.

The stressful conditions imposed by fear contribute immensely to the break of the bonds within the protein tissues resulting to loss of essential components that supports growth and advancement of the organisms in the soil. In sum, lack of enough food material and nutrients to the microorganisms in the soil, due to the protein breakdown lead to their death resulting in low productivity of plants. Plants depend entirely on the microorganisms in the breaking down of organic materials that contain the nutrients required by the plants for their growth and productivity.

Stress has also been associated with the hiking of the body temperature of an individual. Increase in body temperatures above the optimum level results to denaturing of proteins. Therefore, much straining may result in the loss of some of the proteins in the body leading to decline of the amount of amino acids required by the microorganisms. Microorganisms also require nutrients from the proteins from dead organisms in their normal functioning. Without normal functioning of the microorganisms, enough nitrogen products required in the manufacture of proteins and other essential elements required by the plants will not be produced. High temperatures also affect the shape of the proteins in the body; change in shape of the proteins contributes greatly to the misunderstanding with the body of an individual.

All the biological functions in the body of microorganisms and organisms depend entirely on the enzymatic actions. On the other hand, enzymes are made up of proteins (Phelan, 73). The loss of proteins in the body due to its breakdown in the production of energy leads to the decline in the enzymatic actions of the microorganisms.

With our activated flight system, we perceive everything around us as enemies; the flight conditions lead us into an attack mode. Due to over concentration on the straining elements, we may end up inputting much of our effort in searching for the potential enemies leading to sustain of the produced chemicals in our system that are harmful. Overwhelming excessive stress conditions results to organisms’ lives being a series of short-term tragedies.

Some animals such as the toad due to stress imposed by their predators produce some toxic chemicals to keep away predators (Bardin, 1). Such chemicals are so poisonous, and in cases where the predators end up eating the poisonous prey, the ecosystem is affected immensely resulting in the death of microorganisms that are facultative to the poison produced by the toad. Some plants just as toads also protect themselves from predators by producing harmful chemicals, the touch by the predating animal to the plant results to reflex action of the plant that produces many harmful chemicals resulting in the control of the animal population.

In conclusion, the body conditions of an organism contribute immensely to its well-being. Organisms entitled to stressful conditions produce poorly in terms of by products and maintenance of ecological niche. This is because the stressful conditions hampers with the normal functioning of body cells resulting to underproduction of essential elements in the body. Over concentration of blood in the muscles and the brain hampers the functions of other essential organs in the body resulting to paralyzing of the development of an organism. Stressful conditions also results to an organism inputting much effort and force towards management of any causes of threat denying the organism the chance of expounding. Microorganisms are the ones that end up incurring the consequences of the stress imposed on their source of food after death. Such situations that have resulted to low nutrients in the soil contribute to the low productivity in plants.

Your answer would probably go something like this: I’m wearing a red and white striped shirt 👕, blue jeans 👖, and a pair of brown leather shoes 👞

Now, this is not about what you’re actually wearing. But what you’re basing your description on. You are describing to me what you see .

Simply describing what you see can help elevate your food writing.

As you can see, the writers of these paragraphs did not use bombastic vocabulary to wow your tastebuds. All they did was describe what they saw . 

This helps readers visualise the dishes and immerses them in the writing.

3) Avoid using disrespectful adjectives to describe food

Food has a very strong cultural and historical significance . 

It is incredibly disrespectful to undermine and disregard how much the dishes of various cuisines mean to different groups of people. Doing so will have severe consequences 😱

A White-owned “clean Chinese food” restaurant in the US had shut its doors after referring to Chinese dishes as “icky” and that they will make you “bloated”. Talk about being disrespectful.

Here are some words that you should never use in your food content writing ❌❌❌

  • Oriental and Occidental
  • Generic location-based adjectives like Asian, Western, Arabic, African (be specific)

Best words and phrases to describe food

  • Sumptuous meal
  • Spread of delectable dishes
  • A meal fit for the gods
  • It was a lavish dining experience
  • A gastronomical experience like no other
  • Roasted/cooked/steamed/fried to perfection
  • Added a whole other dimension
  • A delight to eat
  • The steak was an absolute winner for me
  • Grilled to medium rare perfection
  • This dish hit the spot for me

2) Words and phrases to describe taste or flavour

  • Symphony of flavours in my mouth
  • Left a delicate sweet aftertaste
  • Holy trinity of aromatics
  • Flavour that packs a punch
  • Savoury with hints of citrus and spice 

3) Words and phrases to describe texture

  • Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside
  • Melts in your mouth
  • I could see the chocolate filling slowly oozing out as I cut through the layers of crispy, flaky pastry
  • The cake was moist, yet was somehow able to avoid becoming soggy
  • Fluffy as a pillow

Start describing food like a pro!

Putting together a descriptive piece of writing about food shouldn’t give you a headache 😵

Instead, it should stimulate the taste buds.

As the legendary Coldplay once said, “nobody said it was easy”. It takes time and practice to get to a level of finesse where you can easily pull these words and phrases right off the tip of your tongue.

An Essay on My Favorite Food Pizza [PDF]

Yummy! Is not it? Today I’ll show you the example of an essay on Pizza.

Pizza is an Italian dish with a round in shape made with a base of wheat dough on which, the toppings of tomato, onion, capsicum, corn, cheese, and chicken is put with contents of spices then baked in the oven at high-temperature and lastly served with chili flakes and oregano or seasonings.

It has a soft crust after it is baked with cheese and has mouth-watering taste savoring your tongue with spongy and different toppings on it. Pizzas are the best to have for lunch or dinner. It is easily available at affordable rates in many of the restaurants and cafes too. 

The Italian dish, Pizza became my favorite when for the first time I had a margarita cheese pizza with extra cheese on it. It was a medium-sized pizza with servings for six people each or three people if they ate in pairs. The Pizza was hot and spongy to touch.

Its top layer was swollen and round shaped. I sprinkled chili flakes and oregano for great taste, and after this when I took a slice of pizza, the cheese was melting and gave yummy taste my tongue. With packed Pizza, inside it also had sachets of tomato sauce that I also tried on another slice of Pizza that I took. 

Pizza is an easy dish to make at homes too. I had seen many videos on YouTube telling different ways to make Pizza, in which they had toppings of vegetables and corn too. People who are not having oven for baking, use a pressure cooker or a pan for baking their Pizza using various seasonings.

It could be easily ordered in any size like large for a group of friends or family, medium-sized for a small group and small-sized for an individual. They are made either in fresh pan or hand-tossed, whichever way we want we can have it.

There are up to more than 15 varieties of Pizza’s made to serve. There are three variations of Pizza that are Stromboli, panzerotti, and calzone.

Dominos and Pizza hut are the two main largest selling pizza restaurants with multiple varieties for vegetarians and non-vegetarians too. They are available in pizza mania with four slices. Side beverages are also available that could be ordered with pizza-like garlic bread, cold drinks or chocolate brownie.

Portions of pasta are also available in both the restaurants. However, they both have variations in price range’s as in Dominos you could get Pizza at reasonable rates but Pizza Hut might be a little bit costly for you to have your favorite Pizza or try new ones.

In today’s time being in every city, we have both these restaurants in every city or every area. With the commencement of these restaurants, they were not having online orderings before but with the advancement of technology they had made available online orderings and delivery services at your doorstep in just 30 minutes. 

Not only these both restaurants but also various other restaurants are also opened servings different varieties of Pizza at affordable rates or sometimes high rates too.

Since Pizza is one of my favorite dishes that I love to eat so I must also keep in mind the contents and other fats present in it to prevent myself from harming my body as it could also lead to negative health effects causing digestive tract cancer or cardiovascular problems.

However, lycopene content is present in Pizza that provides a shield or protection from both these critical issues. 

Pizzas are made with mouth-savoring taste and soft crush but could cause harm to your health if consumed excessively. Eating Pizza every day could damage your internal organs’ liver or could cause you digestive problems like stomach pain too.

It could create serious health problems and easily to children it could deteriorate their health, and to women, it could cause pregnancy issues creating too many hectic problems regarding their health status.

Pizza contains a high quantity of calories, and so it could cause severe damage to your body. So, a person should consume a pizza once or twice a month, only to remain healthy. It would save him or her from a high amount of fat and salt ingredient present in it.

  • Uncertainty about food access. This group of people is food secure but may experience mild food insecurity.
  • Compromise on food variety and food quality. This group of people lacks the ability to choose their food and faces moderate food insecurity.
  • Skipping meals and reducing the quality of food eaten. This group of people experience moderate food insecurity, and
  • No food for a day or more than one day. These are people who face acute food insecurity.
