5. Before I go all emotional, I just want to say thank you to all of you who made it here to our wedding. Kenny and I are overwhelmed with love and support in the best way possible.

Growing up, I’ve always had an idea of what my wedding will look like and to whom I will be married. My parents, even after 30 years of marriage, are still deeply in love, and this is just one of the reasons why I look up to them and their relationship. Since my teenage years, I’ve known that this is the kind of love I want.

When I first met Kenny in high school, I was this shy and introverted girl. I knew I had a crush on him right then, and my best friends — shout-out to Maria, Gemma, and Coraline, now my bridesmaids — would always encourage me to ask him out. We were all surprised when Kenny approached us during lunch to ask me out first; I still remember screaming to my besties about it for days on the phone.

Meeting my in-laws for the first time was honestly a bit intimidating. Of course I was intimidated — it was my first relationship! I wanted to impress them. Over time, as I got to know them more and more, I came to admire them because, like my parents, they love each other so deeply it shines through in everything they do.

Standing here in front of all of you today, I promise to cultivate and nurture that same kind of love. The kind of love that lasts and endures a lifetime.

Thank you to Anna and Stu, my parents, and Bella and Neil, my in-laws, for all the love and support over the years. Huge thanks to my bridesmaids for always being there for me, especially during the times I stressed over which shade of white would be best for my dress. General Outline of Wedding Thank You Speeches

Before proceeding to make a draft of your speech, it will be helpful to have an outline to follow. This outline will give you an idea of what to include in your speech. Here are the parts of a wedding thank you speech:

  • Introduction . The simplest and best way to start your speech is to thank your guests for attending your wedding. You do not need to introduce yourself, as everyone there already knows you.
  • Express what you are feeling . Does it feel surreal? What are you grateful for? Has this day been perfect? Is this your dream wedding? Let your guests know what you are feeling, and what everything means to you.
  • Mention certain people . This part of your thank you speech is an opportunity to give a shout-out to everyone who has helped you in one way or another. Some examples include bridesmaids who helped with planning everything, relatives who financed parts of the event, friends who provided support, and anyone that you think deserves credit. You can also include vendors, such as photographers and caterers. If you think this part will be too long, be more inclusive — instead of dropping names, lump them in categories, such as friends, relatives, and members of the wedding party.
  • Encourage your guests to enjoy the rest of the night . Tell them about the delicious dinner they are about to have, the open bar, or the photo booth. Get them excited to party and celebrate your union.
  • Conclusion . Simply thank your guests again for their attendance or raise your glass in a toast. Keep your conclusion short.

How Long Should the Speech Be?

On average, wedding thank you speeches last anywhere between 30 seconds to two minutes. The longest you can go would be five minutes. Keep this in mind as you start to draft your speech. Conciseness is important, as other people will also be making a speech as well. This includes your maid of honor , best man, sister , and other loved ones.

Who Gives the Speech?

Both you and your partner can deliver the speech if you want. You can either write one speech and divide it between the two of you, or you can each come up with a speech you will give.

An important aspect of revising your speech is to practice saying it out loud. Doing this will help you catch subtler errors, as well as give you an idea of the flow and rhythm of your speech. Pay attention to natural pauses, breathing spaces, and the pace of your delivery. Practice with your partner and other trusted people and ask them for constructive criticism and areas for improvement.

It is best to use informal, audience-friendly, and accessible language. You do not have to try to impress your guests with a deep vocabulary; what matters more is the sentiment and emotions you are genuinely expressing.

Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking

Depending on the size of your guest list, you may or may not have a problem with delivering a wedding thank you speech. Regardless, here are a few tips to keep in mind so that you will feel a little less anxious about giving a speech:

  • Do not look your guests in the eye . Knowing that everyone is staring at you can be intimidating and overwhelming. One way to alleviate this is to look at their foreheads instead of making direct eye contact. Your guests will still think that you are looking at them, but you will not see their facial expressions.
  • Do not memorize your speech . You are bound to forget a specific detail, certain names, or dedications you want to make. Writing your thank you speech can be intimidating. It’s something you’ll often think about at the very beginning and then totally forget about as you get swept into picking flowers, colours cakes and of course the dress.

It can also be a really hard thing to put together as emotions get high (you are planning one of the biggest days of your life after all) so we put this post together to help you get started and to break it down in bite-size pieces:

Make sure you write something out in advance so you at least have an idea of what you plan to say. Plus, it never hurts to read it out loud a few times, especially in front of someone to help get any stage fright butterflies out of the way.

Make a list and check it twice

Remember to thank those who have helped you along the way and made your special day possible. If you think you might forget anyone, write yourself a small note to keep on hand.

If they’ve welcomed you to the family with open arms or have done anything that has really warmed your heart say so. This is a beautiful time to share these sorts of things.

This is also a great time in your speech to thank any out of town guests or family that have travelled from afar.

Take your time

Speak slowly and take your time, also make sure those in the back can hear you. Practice a few times in front of a mirror and time yourself. You’ll be surprised at how fast you might be when you look at the end time. 

But also make sure your speech does not carry on and on. Keep it to the point and stick to your notes. It is your wedding but your guests will thank you if you don’t go on for 20 minutes. 

Keep it light and fun, feel free to add in a joke to help keep your guests attention.

It is often best to keep the language ‘family-friendly’ and keep the stories equally appropriate. Some things are best kept as an inside joke.

A little thanks goes a long way

Thank your vendors that helped make your day extra special. No need to go into much detail, unless you want to, but vendors always feel touched when they’ve been thanked by name (their company or personal one).

And always, always, thank your guests for attending your special day! Make sure they know their love, support, gifts and attendance does not go unappreciated.

I am not really good with public speaking so I would like to begin this speech with a story. When I was little, I would always plan the perfect wedding. I would pick up little flowers from our garden, arrange them into the most beautiful bouquet I have ever seen, and run up to my room. I would then grab my blanket and wrap it around my body pretending to be a dress. Put little clips on my hair and tie it with a bow. Oh! Of course, a perfect wedding would not be complete without a partner, right? I’ll pick my favorite stuffed toy and spray it with the sweetest scent I have. Then, I would start the ceremony, giggling throughout what I thought was the most romantic thing I would ever experience once I get older.

Then I got a little older. A lot of things have changed. I have matured but I am still that same little girl who once dreamed of the perfect wedding. Although I have stopped to pretend to kiss my stuffed toys, I still dream of the sweetest and most romantic kiss of my life. I have watched tons of romantic comedies to try to tweak my perfect wedding plan. I just want everything to be perfect and to my liking, because I believe that this should be the best moment of my life. I believe I had everything all planned out except for the man I will share this perfect moment with. Oh how I have prayed and wished so hard to all of the gods, saints, and whatever people believe in to help me find my perfect man. Each day I wake up and whisper to the heavens, “please help me find him today.” I just could not wait any longer to celebrate this joyous event.

Days, months, seasons, and years passed. I am now standing here in front of that man I prayed and wished so hard for. This man turned my world. I believed everything I watched in romcom movies was what would happen to me. But boy was I so wrong. I thought that the hardest part of a wedding was choosing your gown. Spoiler alert: it was writing the vows. I have not prepared for this. In all those silly weddings I had when I was little, the vows were not there. I mean, how could I even put into words everything this man had done for me? Much more to fit into a short speech. So I have been stressing a lot with the vows and I guess I have delivered successfully. I sure hope I did.

My childhood dream of sorts would not be possible without the help of a team of people. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude first to my dear wedding guests who have willingly shared their time with us today to celebrate another milestone in life, thank you. I know you all have busy schedules and whatever things you have planned. This time that you shared with us means so much to me and is more than any gift we could ask for. We hope you still continue to support and pray for us as we embark on this other journey as husband and wife. I also hope you have enjoyed the food we just served.

Second, to our amazing wedding team. The servers, caterers, wedding planners and coordinators, florists, singers, designers, and photographers. We would really like to thank you a lot for helping us make this the perfect wedding. You have really relieved us from a chunk of the stress by lending us your helping hand and making sure this event would run smoothly. You have made this seemingly small and regular event look so grand and beautiful. You guys were the real backbone of this event. You made it so much easier for us. For that, we will always be thankful to you. Thank you also to our presider for making this event a solemn one and sharing with us the grace from the heavens.

Next of course would be our loyal and tireless bridesmaids and groomsmen. You have been with us from the beginning of this wild journey and you have also helped in making this a memorable one. You have always got our backs. You have been extra cooperative in whatever ideas we throw to make this more personalized for us. From picking the right dress to picking the right flowers and to photoshoots and all you guys never complained. Well, you guys are our friends so I think I should add picking the right partner? Kidding aside, I sincerely thank you all for everything you have done for us. You guys are the realest!

Fourth would be for my family, mommy and daddy. My parents who have birthed me into this world. Hey, partner! You should also thank my parents because, without them, you would not be standing here with the most beautiful person you have ever met who also happens to be the one you're going to spend your future with. Going back to my parents who have nothing but love for me. Who has always been so supportive of me. The people who I run to first. The two people who have provided every single need that I have. Thank you. I may not have said this often to you guys but I really do thank you for everything. You have taught me a lot of valuable lessons that I will surely bring with me for life. You raised me to be the best version of myself. Yes, I have made mistakes but you were the first ones to correct me without feeling that that mistake would forever define me. Thank you for guiding me.

To my new parents, the parents of my loving partner. I am really excited to join your family. I am looking forward to the new memories I would create with you. I am positive that these will be happy ones. Just like my partner, I would really like to thank you for raising this person to be a good one. Thank you for blessing us with this wonderful person. Of course, I would also like to thank you for being very supportive of our love. I know I can always count on you for whatever things I would need. Thank you for welcoming me with warm and open arms to your family.

Lastly, to my dear husband. I have been dreaming of this day since I was a child and here I am today in front of you, my perfect man. Thank you for being so patient with me. Yes, the wifezilla thing at weddings is real and yes this man had held my hand all throughout and remained calm. The effect of the stress of wedding planning on me did not even bother you. God, I’m so thankful that you are a patient man. I hope you stay that way for a long time. We have been through a lot of challenges and I am sure we would encounter more so I thank you for still choosing to be with me. I have said a lot during our vows and I still have a lot more to say but those will never be enough to describe how thankful I am that you are the one I am marrying.

So, to everyone invited here today as our wedding guests to celebrate this next chapter of our lives, cheers! Thank you for coming and enjoy the wedding reception and let’s all use the dance floor. May you all find your perfect partners.

When we achieve, we usually do so because others have helped. Your speech of appreciation is the gift or acknowledgment you give in return for what was given you.

When is a thank you speech appropriate?

Any time is good to say thank you! However, a more formal speech of thanks could fit any of these occasions.

  • for coming to my graduation, farewell, birthday, or retirement party
  • for the promotion
  • for the award
  • for coming to our wedding and your gifts, our engagement party, our 50th wedding anniversary
  • for coming to the opening of my new business...

Be prepared! Best practice guidelines

Generally the decision to leap to your feet and give a thank you speech is not spontaneous. You will likely have some forewarning and time to consider exactly what you want to say and who you want to mention.

Deciding on the content

Cover these three content areas and you'll be fine.

  • WHO are you thanking? Note their names in ranking order- the most important first.
  • WHAT are you thanking them for? Be specific rather than general. Naming what you are grateful for gives your thanks more meaning.
  • WHAT did their gift of time, expertise, encouragement, money... mean to you? Again, be specific. This is your chance to publicly give credit where it's due, to compliment, to praise. Take it.

Writing your speech

When you've sorted out who you wish to mention and what for, you are ready to begin writing.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

1. Introduction/opening

In your introduction or opening give the reason for the occasion and why it is you're going to thank everyone. What you say, and how you say it, will set the tone for the remainder of the speech.

Depending on the number of people on your 'thank you/appreciation' list and the amount of time you have, consider including a small story about the lead-up making this event possible. A well-chosen personal anecdote will always go down well because it lets those listening share your experience more deeply.

In the body of your speech, start at the top of your list of people to thank and work your way through it. Take care to give the most important people the most time.

For those whom you want to mention but don't have enough time to make individual acknowledgments consider grouping them according to function.

Example: "To Alex, Mary, Judy and Sam, thank you for making me remember to laugh. You helped me keep my sanity and perspective when the going was tough."

3. Conclusion

In the conclusion, summarize your main points and finish.

A short thank you speech sample 

Here's a short example thank you speech for you to see how it could be done. There are many ways covering the required content. This is just one.

The person giving this speech is thanking an organization for giving him an award. 

It is 374 words long. When spoken it will take approximately 2 minutes + to deliver. That's about the right length. It's brief and covers everything needed.

As you read it through imagine hearing it out loud.

"Who's considered the incredible power and range of meaning in 'thank you'?  Those two words express gratitude, humility, understanding, as well as acknowledgement.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues because I need to say all of that, and then some more.

Thank you for coming to share my being given the Fred Smith Award for Community Service. It's very humbling.

There's a phrase I'm sure you know: it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it's not a child that's been raised but awareness and a long-needed community resource - the  Parksville Community Literacy Center.  The village behind it and me, is you.

In particular, thank you to my wife Marlene who has always understood and shared my conviction that communities are healthiest when its resources are equally shared, and that the ability to read underpins long term social and economic wellbeing.

I know the hours I spent after work helping to establish our new Center tested her, especially when I was home late, again.

Remarkably she continues to support, and love me.  For that I will always be grateful.

Mary Hill, Catherine Beech and Matthew Fall from the Fred Smith Foundation – thank you for sharing the vision of an integrated community and for being so incredibly supportive. You understood what we were trying to achieve and helped make it possible. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and funds are deeply appreciated.

This award may have my name on it, but in truth it belongs to everybody who has worked to make the center a reality. Have you got a spare day or two? If I called out all those people we'd be here for quite some time! Instead, I'll simply say thank you. You know who you are.

The time and effort you've given ensures that the Parksville people who want it will have access to effective literacy programs and resources. That is a priceless gift.  As Nobel Peace Prize winner former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan said “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

Tips to help you get your thank you speech right

Many people make the assumption that once they've got the words of their speech sorted, they're set to go.

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

Giving yourself several  rehearsals, firstly by yourself and then in front of  friends or family, will help enormously. Click the link for detailed information about  how to rehearse effectively .

For the condensed and shortened version covering good rehearsal practice follow the points below.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues.  It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

  • to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
  • for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again. 

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few  more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone.  If it's too short, add more detail.  Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

Write the main points of your thank you speech on cue cards. Good notes will keep you on track while ensuring you cover everything you want to like, for instance, the name of every person you want to thank and why.

  • Read your speech out loud several times. While this isn’t necessary to memorize the speech, it will allow you to look at your guests instead of staring at the paper.

All American’s Spencer and Olivia are getting ready to say “I do” — but not before the vortex throws them an unforgettable Vegas-themed blowout.

In Us Weekly’s exclusive first look at the Monday, July 8, episode, it’s been five months since Spencer ( Daniel Ezra ) was named Super Bowl MVP as a New York Bobcat, and he and fiancée Olivia ( Samantha Logan ) are focused on one thing: pulling off the perfect wedding weekend. First, however, they’ll get to celebrate the impending nuptials with their besties as Coop ( Bre-Z ) and Asher ( Cody Christian ) plan a special joint bachelor/bachelorette party for the ages.

“I Do” — the first of the two-part season 6 finale — was directed by Jess Macallan and written by Micah Cyrus and Carrie Gutenberg . In addition to all the wedding festivities, the hour will also follow Jordan ( Michael Evans Behling ) as he considers a new job offer, while his and Layla’s ( Greta Onieogou ) search for a new home takes an unexpected turn. Elsewhere, Laura ( Monet Mazur ), and Grace ( Karimah Westbrook ) go head-to-head to see who can write the best wedding speech as their kids get ready to walk down the aisle.

Spencer and Olivia’s wedding weekend comes just one episode after their engagement proposal — and newlyweds Jordan and Layla’s own ceremony. It will also mark the first episode to air since news broke that Ezra, who has led the series since its 2018 premiere, will step down as a series regular for season 7.

According to Deadline , Ezra and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll made the decision before season 6 began filming.

“After making the difficult decision to leave All American , my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I’ve ever played in the manner he deserves,” Ezra told the outlet in a Monday, June 24, statement. “Thanks to Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish. Season six is ‘Spencer’s goodbye.’ I’ll miss him. I’ll miss our cast and crew. I hope it’s been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him.”

While opening could lead to other casting changes — including newer characters taking the reins — Ezra is still set to return in a guest star capacity.

“Partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer’s story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling, experience<“ Carroll sai in a separate statement.  “Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field. And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I’m grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of All American .”

As a parent, you’re likely eager to find ways to support your child throughout the wedding planning process. Whether you’re helping them select the perfect dress or suit, accompanying them to their cake tasting, or assisting them with the final guest list , planning a wedding is just as memorable of an experience for you as it is for your son or daughter. But before you break out your spreadsheets and start giving floral suggestions, there are a few things to know about a parent’s role in helping out with the big day. Our first piece of advice? Never overstep the boundaries put in place by your child.

Though you’ve probably helped guide your son or daughter through life’s ups and downs, wedding planning requires a different level of support—which is entirely based on the individual needs of the engaged couple. While the advice and knowledge you’re willing to share can be helpful, it’s best to let your child steer the ship and dictate where and when they need your assistance, if at all. Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman further echoes this sentiment, revealing that she’s had to come to terms with supporting her own engaged daughter from the sidelines. “She has been able to do it on her own because she knows what she wants,” Gottsman shares. “It’s important as a parent to honor that when it fits the budget and it’s their wishes.”

Meet the Expert

  • Diane Gottsman is an etiquette expert and owner of The Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, Texas. 
  • Victoria Lartey-Williams is the owner of and the lead event planner and designer behind Victorious Events NYC , a boutique wedding planning and design firm.

And our advice doesn’t stop there. Ahead, we asked Gottsman, in addition to wedding planner Victoria Lartey-Williams, to share five additional rules parents should follow to best support their child while they plan their wedding. Here’s everything you need to know. 

Listen to and Respect Your Child's Wishes

According to Lartey-Williams, listening to your child and respecting their wishes is the best way to provide optimal support when wedding planning. This simple act shows your son or daughter that you understand and acknowledge their boundaries and trust that they’re capable of making the right decisions—which, in turn, can relieve any wedding planning stress they may have. “As a parent, I want to know everything. Do they have a date? What are the colors? What season?” Gottsman adds. “But we also want to honor their space and not put pressure on them.” 

You don’t want to entirely ease off the gas, though, shares Lartey-Williams. “I feel like there's two different types of parents. There are the parents who are really involved, and there are the parents who take a back seat because they don't want to overstep,” she says. “Landing somewhere in the middle is the best way to be helpful to their children.” It may be hard to release the reins and let your child take the lead, but, ultimately, your role as a parent is to respect whatever your child needs and requests (within reason!) during the lead up to the big day.

Avoid Sharing Negative Opinions

Chances are you’re going to dislike a few decisions your son or daughter makes about their wedding. However, it’s best to keep things positive and avoid sharing any negative sentiments, especially if your child hasn’t requested anyone’s feedback. “One mistake parents make is trying to impose their views that may not align with the bride and groom,” Gottsman says. “You want to help them think through things without insisting that they follow your advice.” Lartey-Williams adds, “That can really overwhelm the couple and take away from their enjoyment of planning one of the best days of their life.” 

Remember, your child is an adult and is fully capable of making independent decisions, even if you disagree with them. “What's most important is prioritizing your relationship with your child, first and foremost,” advises Lartey-Williams, who further shares that parents should leave the details to the couple and wedding planner so that they're able to provide optimal care and love throughout the planning process. 

Set Clear Expectations About Your Financial Contributions

If you plan to provide financial support and contribute to your child’s wedding day budget, be sure to clearly communicate how much you’re able to give them as soon as possible. It’s also imperative that you stick to your budget and only promise an amount you can actually deliver. “If the parents are helping with the budget, then the parents have a right to set a budget,” Gottsman adds. “Everything should be determined and communicated in advance.” With that in mind, money doesn’t dictate your level of involvement during wedding planning, so if you choose to pay for your child’s nuptials, you still have to respect their boundaries and follow their lead. 

Stay in the Moment and Be Present

Wedding planning comes with many heartfelt junctures, and as the days inch closer to the main event, it's important that you enjoy each moment with your child to help cultivate a supportive space as nerves start to build up. Luckily, remaining present isn't a tall order: All you need to do is focus on the now and not put too much thought into how the wedding will turn out. Lartey-Williams also recommends scheduling time regularly to meet with your child and their partner (without discussing the wedding), in order to maintain a sense of normalcy as the final planning pieces come together. “Scheduling a lunch date or inviting them to dinner at [your] home will go a long way,” she adds. By staying grounded and level-headed, you'll be able to minimize any stress you may have otherwise transferred to your child unintentionally. 

Be an Advocate

One final tip? Always advocate for your child, notes Gottsman. This means having difficult conversations with other family members and guests so that your daughter or son doesn't have to deal with any drama. For example, if your child plans to have a kid-free celebration , offer to speak with guests who are requesting to bring their children. “You’re playing the cheerleader and the balancer," Gottsman says.  At the end of the day, you want to ensure your child has a stress-free experience, so being a buffer is a wonderful way to help cultivate a supportive space.

If you’re still unsure how to help your child, though, simply ask them, “How involved do you want me to be? I will do as much or as little as you would like. I just want you to know I'm here for you,” Gottsman recommends. “Although [wedding planning] is joyful, it's also stressful. To avoid any of that confusion, when in doubt, just ask.”

Consequently, I find myself feeling surprised and irritated when I’m the one extending the breadbasket to the requester and they take a roll — quite often without an expression of thanks — and happily begin buttering it while I am left holding the basket. I’m then responsible for finding a place to set it down before I can resume my meal.

Can you please advise the correct protocol in this situation?

The non-negotiable points, then, are: Do not leave grandparents — or anyone else — straining to lift something heavier than they are; do not leave anyone holding anything hot; if there is no way for people to serve themselves, offer to help — usually by holding the tray steady. Lastly, thanks are always welcome.
