World Environment Day is the perfect opportunity to make people aware of the issues we are facing and how one can contribute to saving it. Thus, it is quite important in its own way.

Importance of World Environment Day

World Environment Day reminds us to strengthen the world and ensure that nature is preserved at all costs. It throws light on the causes which are causing serious harm to our environment. For instance, industries and factories are contributing largely to pollution. They are deteriorating the quality of air that we breathe and the water we consume.

Thus, this day serves as an eye-opener for many citizens who aren’t aware of all this. In other words, it spreads awareness amongst the common people which the environment is facing right now. Moreover, it also encourages the public from different societies and communities to take active participation in celebrating the day.

Every Little Deed Matters

On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. No matter how small a step you are taking to lead a greener lifestyle, it does make a difference. Because, if everyone starts doing little deeds one by one, it will turn into something big. As the saying goes every drop makes an ocean, it is true in this case as well.

As there are a lot of diseases that originate due to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water, we must begin there. For instance, when water remains stagnant or unclean for long, various insects and bacteria start growing there. This results in deadly diseases like Malaria, Dengue and more. So, we must make sure to cover the tanks, pots, coolers and more which may become a breeding ground for such insects and diseases.

Similarly, we have to talk about the issues of garbage disposal. Especially in our country, people litter around everywhere. It is essential to firstly dispose of waste properly and also segregate the wet and dry waste accordingly.

These little deeds will make you realize how wholesome your life will become. It is not always about the money and luxury, the little fulfilling things and change in habits can also prove to be very effective.

Thus, we have the World Environment Day which serves as a reminder to protect the environment at all costs. All the resources of nature from forests to oceans and soil to air, we must conserve.

Our land. Our future.

All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point.

According to the  UN Convention to Combat Desertification , up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of  droughts  has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

Land restoration is a key pillar of the  UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration  (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the  Sustainable Development Goals .

This is why  World Environment Day  2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from 2 to 13 December 2024.

#OnlyOneEarth Practical Guide

UNEP has published a practical guide outlining some of the collective, transformative actions that governments, cities, businesses, organizations and individuals can take to protect and restore our planet.

What is World Environment Day?

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2024, it is hosted by Saudi Arabia.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

A moment of truth for climate action

As climate records are shattered, and emissions continue to rise, the UN Secretary-General will set out some hard-hitting truths about the state of the climate, the grotesque risks leaders are taking, and what companies and countries – particularly the G7 and the G20 – need to do over the next eighteen months to salvage humanity’s chances of a livable future.

Let's beat plastic pollution for World Environment Day 2023

The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.

The world is being inundated by plastic. More than  400 million tonnes of plastic  is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated  19-23 million tonnes  end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Today, plastic clogs our landfills, leaches into the ocean and is combusted into toxic smoke, making it one of the gravest threats to the planet.

Not only that, what is less known is that microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Many plastic products contain hazardous additives, which may pose a threat to our health.

The good news is that we have science and solutions to tackle the problem –and a lot is already happening. What is needed most now is a surge of public and political pressure to scale up and speed actions from governments, companies and other stakeholders to solve this crisis. This underscores the importance of this World Environment Day mobilising action from every corner of the world.

Individual and community actions underpin the systemic change required to transition to a less plastic-dependent economy, meaning everyone, you included, can play a role!

English rendering of PM's video message on the occasion of World Environment Day 2023

I extend my heartfelt wishes to all of you, our country, and the world on World Environment Day. The theme for this year's Environment Day is the campaign to get rid of single-use plastic. I am pleased that India has been consistently working on this issue for the past 4-5 years, much before the global initiative. As early as 2018, India initiated action on two levels to get rid of single-use plastic. On one hand, we imposed a ban on single-use plastic, and on the other hand, we made plastic waste processing mandatory. As a result, approximately 30 lakh tons of plastic packaging in India are now being compulsorily recycled. This accounts for 75 per cent of the total annual plastic waste generated in India. Today, around 10,000 producers, importers, and brand owners are actively participating in this endeavour.

In the 21st century, India is marching forward with a clear roadmap for climate change and environmental conservation. India has struck a balance between present requirements and future vision. On one hand, we have provided necessary assistance to the poorest of the poor, making earnest efforts to fulfil their needs; on the other hand, we have also taken significant steps in addressing future energy requirements.

Over the past nine years, India has placed unprecedented focus on green and clean energy. Solar power has gained significant momentum, and LED bulbs have reached a larger number of households, saving money for our people, especially the poor and middle class, while also protecting the environment. Electricity bills have consistently reduced. India's leadership has been recognized globally even during this global pandemic. Amidst this global pandemic, India has initiated the Mission Green Hydrogen. Additionally, India has taken significant steps towards natural farming and organic agriculture to protect soil and water from chemical fertilizers.

Brothers and sisters,

Continuing the campaign for a green future and a green economy, today marks the beginning of two more initiatives. Over the past nine years, the number of wetlands and Ramsar sites in India has increased by nearly threefold compared to earlier. Today, the ‘Amrit Dharohar Yojana’ has been launched. This scheme will ensure the conservation of these Ramsar sites through community participation. These Ramsar sites will become centers of eco-tourism and serve as a source of green jobs for thousands of people in the future. The second initiative is related to the long coastline of the country and the population residing there. Through the "Mishti Yojana," the country's mangrove ecosystem will be revived and protected. This will help restore mangrove cover in nine states of the country. It will also contribute to raising the sea level and reducing the impact of coastal areas from disasters like cyclones, thus improving livelihoods and lives in these coastal regions.

It is crucial for every nation in the world to rise above self-interests and think about the protection of the world climate. The model of development in major and modern countries for a long time is highly contentious. In this development model, the focus was largely on first developing our own countries and then considering the environment later. As a result, while these countries have achieved their development goals, the entire world has had to bear the cost of their progress. Even today, developing and underdeveloped countries are suffering the consequences of the wrong policies of some developed nations. For decades, no one, no country questioned or stopped this approach of certain developed countries. I am pleased that today India has raised the question of climate justice in front of every such nation.

India's ancient culture encompasses both nature and progress. Inspired by this ideology, India today focuses on ecology as much as it emphasizes the economy. While India is investing unprecedentedly in its infrastructure, it continues to maintain a strong focus on the environment. On the one hand, while India has expanded its 4G and 5G connectivity, on the other hand, it has simultaneously increased its forest cover. On the one hand, while India has constructed four crore homes for the poor, on the other hand, India has also recorded significant growth in wildlife and wildlife sanctuaries. On the one hand, India is running the Jal Jeevan Mission, while on the other hand, it has also created over 50,000 Amrit Sarovars (water bodies) for water security. On the one hand, while India has become the world's fifth-largest economy, on the other hand, India is also among the top five countries in renewable energy. On the one hand, while India is stepping up agricultural exports, on the other hand, India is simultaneously promoting a campaign for 20% ethanol blending in petrol. On the one hand, while India has established organizations like the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), on the other hand, it has also announced the International Big Cat Alliance. It is a significant step towards the conservation of big cats.

I am personally very pleased that Mission LiFE, which stands for Lifestyle for the Environment, is becoming a global public movement, a people's movement. When I launched Mission LiFE last year in Kevadia-Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, there was a curiosity among the people. Today, this mission is spreading awareness about adopting a lifestyle change to tackle climate change. Just a month ago, a campaign was launched for Mission LiFE. I am told that nearly two crore people have joined it in less than 30 days. With the spirit of ‘Giving Life to My City’, rallies have been organized and quiz competitions have taken place. Lakhs of schoolchildren and their teachers have become part of this campaign through eco-clubs. Lakhs of colleagues have embraced the mantra of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in their daily lives. Changing habits is the fundamental principle of Mission LiFE, which aims to bring about a transformation in the world. Mission LiFE is crucial for the future generations and the bright future of humanity.

This awareness is not limited to just our country, but support for India's initiative is growing worldwide. I made another appeal to the global community last year on World Environment Day. The appeal was to share innovative solutions for bringing climate-friendly behavioural change among individuals and communities. The solutions that should be measurable and scalable! It is a matter of great satisfaction that colleagues from nearly 70 countries around the world have shared their thoughts. Among them are students, researchers, experts from various domains, professionals, NGOs, and ordinary citizens. Some of the participants have been rewarded today for their exceptional ideas. I congratulate all the award winners wholeheartedly.

Every step taken towards Mission LiFE will become a strong shield for the environment across the globe in the times to come. The collection of thought leadership for LiFE has also been released today. I believe that our commitment to green growth will become even more powerful and sustainable with such efforts. Once again, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to everyone on World Environment Day.

Good morning!

Please allow me to extend my good wishes to you all on behalf of the UNDP Country Office team and my most sincere appreciation to the Ministry [of Land, Water, and Environment] for conveying us all here today.

It is with great honor that I join you, and millions worldwide, in celebrating World Environment Day 2023, especially on the occasion of its 50 th Anniversary this year. Every year, this Day is a powerful reminder of the urgency of promoting and raising awareness about the environment and reflecting upon the consequences of our actions.

This year’s theme focuses on the “Solutions to Plastic Pollutions” under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution shedding light on one of the most significant challenges of our time, a global crisis that has a detrimental impact on human health, the ecosystem, wildlife, and ultimately the economy. While it must be admitted that the world has greatly benefited from the use of plastic, the adverse effects on the environment and our health cannot now be overlooked. 

Plastic is an element that remains in the environment for a long time and cannot decompose, and it only breaks down into smaller pieces while releasing toxic chemicals. It is estimated that globally more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced yearly. Most of it is designed for single use; less than 10 percent is recycled, and about 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers, and seas every year.

Plastic pollution  has increasinglytransformed   our  habitats and   reduc ed the ability  of ecosystems  to adapt to climate change,  heavily affecting  the livelihood of  millions of people and  food production  systems .   On average, it is estimated that every   one of us consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year as microplastics end up in the food we eat, the water we use, and the air we breathe.

Also, about 22% of the causes of diseases are directly linked to environmental factors. This number increases to more than 30% in the case of children. In the world, today, about 854.000 people die prematurely every year because of unhealthy environments.

With available science and solutions to tackle the problem, governments, companies, and other stakeholders must scale up and speed up actions to solve this crisis. Time is running out; nature is in emergency mode and the world has yet to find effective and global solutions. 

But we are also here today to testify on the many transformative and sustainable alternatives Eritrea has successfully implemented over the years. Initiatives that must be celebrated and replicated elsewhere!

Excellencies, ladies, and gentlemen

As Eritrea’s partners, it is a duty and honor to celebrate all the progressive efforts the country has embarked on. In the early days of environmental consciousness, Eritrea decisively took the lead by prohibiting the use of plastic bags in 2005. 

Many steps have also been taken to improve the legislative and policy framework, contribute to environmental conservation efforts, and control air and water pollution. Among others let me recall:  

The efforts to increase the use of alternative energy have also  reduc ed the pressure on the resources  while securing the  population’s health, particularly women and children .

Above all, Eritrea must be commended for working on its environmental policy framework while consistently placing the people at the center of the development agenda. It included and allowed communities, individuals, grassroots, and civil society organizations to lead the way in finding real, inclusive, and sustainable solutions in the conservatio n and protection   of the environment. 

In conclusion, Honorable Minister, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to applaud the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment and the Government of Eritrea for all its initiatives in designing action plans that are responsive to climate impacts, reduce emissions, contribute to biodiversity conservation, and protect the livelihoods of society.

Let me express my immense appreciation for being part of this journey with you all. I take the opportunity to assure you of UNDP’s commitment and readiness to continue strengthening our partnership!

End Relentless Wars on Nature, Protect Our Common Home, Secretary-General Stresses in Message for International Mother Earth Day

Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message on International Mother Earth Day, observed on 22 April:

On International Mother Earth Day, we reflect on humanity’s most important relationship — our relationship with the natural world.

From the air we breathe to the water we drink to the soil that grows our food, humanity’s health depends on the health of Mother Earth.

Yet we seem hellbent on destruction.  Our actions are laying waste to forests, jungles, farmland, wetlands, oceans, coral reefs, rivers, seas and lakes.  Biodiversity is collapsing as   million species teeter on the brink of extinction.

We must end these relentless and senseless wars on nature. We have the tools, the knowledge and the solutions.  But, we must pick up the pace.  We need accelerated climate action with deeper, faster emissions cuts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°Cs.  We also need massively scaled-up investments in adaptation and resilience, particularly for the most vulnerable countries and communities who have done the least to cause the crisis.

Healthy ecosystems — from oceans and rivers to forests and prairies — are also critical in our fight against climate change.  Let’s get to work to implement the historic United Nations biodiversity agreement to ensure that 30 per cent of Earth’s land and water is protected by 2030. At every step, Governments must lead the way.  But, corporations, institutions and civil society also have a vital role.

Finally, we must learn from the time-won wisdom, knowledge and leadership of Indigenous Peoples, whose environmental stewardship stretches back millennia, and who hold many of the solutions to the world’s climate and biodiversity crises.

This Earth Day, I urge people everywhere to raise your voices — in your schools, workplaces and faith communities, and on social media platforms — and demand leaders make peace with nature.  Let us all do our part to protect our common home for the sake of people and planet right now, and for the generations to come.

World Environment Day 2023: Every year, World Environment Day is observed globally on June 5 . It is celebrated to mark the importance of nature and the environment and it also gives out a message to the global population that nature should not be undervalued and it should not be taken for granted at any cost.

World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) , and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

The theme for World Environment Day 2023 is focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.' Ecosystem Restoration'. It is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters. The steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action. World Environment Day 2023 is hosted by Côte d'Ivoire and supported by the Netherlands.

World Environment Day 2023: History & Significance

One of the biggest and most celebrated events organised by the United Nations is World Environment Day. The United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972 after discussions on environment-related issues during the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The day was first observed two years later in 1974 in the US.

In 1794, Congress passed the Neutrality Act, which prohibited Americans from taking part in any military action against a country that was at peace with the United States.

As per the UN, World Environment Day gives an opportunity to prove oneself as a responsible citizen by showing eagerness and willingness to help in enhancing and preserving mother nature.

Importance of World Environment Day 2023

2023 is a historic milestone as it marks 51 years since the 1972 Stockholm Conference. With Côte d'Ivoire and supported by the Netherlands, the slogan for World Environment Day 2023 is “Beat Plastic Pollution” , which focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign.

On World Environment Day, pledges offer hope for future

There is only one Earth – and it needs to be protected, now.

That was the message from scientists, policymakers, and everyday people on Sunday as millions observed World Environment Day 2022 . The event featured several major policy announcements, including a pledge from Sweden to limit the extraction of coal, oil, and natural gas.

But it also came with a warning that human-induced climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste were pushing the planet to the breaking point. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his World Environment Day message , called for a unified global effort to halt environmental degradation.

“We know what to do. And, increasingly, we have the tools to do it,” he said. “But we still lack leadership and cooperation. So today, I appeal to leaders in all sectors: lead us out of this mess.”

This was echoed by Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), speaking at a World Environment Day event in Stockholm, Sweden. “The science has told us we have to end fossil fuels. We have to restore nature to its full glory. We have to transform our food systems. We have to make our cities green.”

Today, I appeal to leaders in all sectors: lead us out of this mess.

Andersen was in Sweden as the country hosted this year’s World Environment Day observance. It followed the Stockholm+50  international meeting, which wrapped up on Friday. Both events came 50 years after the Swedish capital hosted the UN Conference on the Human Environment , widely considered the first environmental summit.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day – which has been held annually since 1973 – was “Only One Earth.”

The day saw a host of environment-related pledges from governments, businesses and community groups. Sweden announced a ban on issuing new licenses for the extraction of coal, oil, and natural gas from 1 July this year.

“Our message to the global community is clear. The winners in the global race will be the ones that speed up the transition, not the ones that lag behind and cling to a dependency on fossil fuels,” said Sweden’s Minister for Climate and the Environment, Annika Strandhäll.

In addition to the activities in Stockholm, events were held in more than 150 countries, both on and offline. Thousands shared their efforts to safeguard nature and the Only One Earth Practical Guide , which outlines some of the transformative actions that organizations and people can take, was downloaded over 50,000 times. Meanwhile, religious leaders came together to sign a landmark appeal on climate-responsible finance. The World Council of Churches, the Muslim Council of Elders and the New York Board of Rabbis pledged to only engage with financial institutions that are aligned with the Paris Agreement objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. 

One of the largest retailers in Australia, Woolworths, announced it will stop selling 15-cent reusable plastic bags across the country in a gradual phase out over the next year.

India’s largest online supermarket, bigbasket, announced it will eliminate plastic packaging from its fruit and vegetable delivery services.

Chile ratified the Escazú Agreement , which guarantees the public access to environmental information and justice.

In the Nigerian capital, Abuja, the city’s Environmental Protection Board announced it will reduce waste by 30 per cent .

Other events ranged from an electric vehicle rally in Cairo to a beach clean-up in Peru to a massive cyclathon in Mumbai  to an  e-waste drive in Bucharest .

Tens of millions of people demanded urgent action on social media to restore and conserve the environment, with #WorldEnvironmentDay trending on Twitter. Everyone from UN Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Pope Francis tweeted in support of environmental action.

Whatever the medium, or the event, the message was the same: time is running out and much more action is needed to stave off disaster. “The triple planetary crisis is accelerating, and why? Because we consume 1.7 planets a year,” Andersen said in Stockholm. “We have only one Earth. We have to accept that we're not doing enough to protect it.”
