As the classes are held online, students don’t need to be physically present in the school. This gives them the freedom to move cities, visit their families or travel for necessary activities without missing their classes. In these classes, the study material is also shared in a digital manner which reduces the need for physical books and copies which in turn saves trees.

Working digitally can also help students improve their technical skills which would definitely help them in future. For older students who want to pursue higher education, online education is a boon. It helps them easily manage their jobs and/or families while studying. 

Online education has a few disadvantages as it doesn’t allow students to experience the joy of sitting in a physical classroom with their friends, but its advantages are far greater in number.

We are currently living in a digital world which is becoming more and more technologically advanced as days go by. Today, we can order groceries, food and clothing items online instead of visiting traditional markets or shops. We can book cabs, buses, trains and flights from the comfort of our homes.

Our homes have also become smarter with the use of smart appliances. Even when it comes to education, especially since the time the coronavirus pandemic began, schools, colleges as well as private coaching institutes have moved their classes from physical classrooms to digital ones. And although this step was mostly taken because it was the need of the hour, people have now realised that online education does indeed come with its own set of benefits. 

As the classes are held online, students don’t need to be physically present in the school. This gives students as well as their parents the opportunity to move places, visit families and travel for necessary activities without the fear of missing their important classes. Since many of these classes are also recorded, a student has the flexibility to watch them when he has the time and space to do so.

This also gives students who are weaker, a chance to go through the lessons slowly or multiple times until they understand them completely. Online education also cuts down the additional expenses as the schools don’t need to manage huge buildings and the teachers, as well as students, don’t need to spend money on bus or rickshaw fares. 

In online classrooms, the study materials, books, copies as well as test papers and assignments are all digital. This reduces the use of physical books and copies and thus, saves our valuable trees which are cut down to produce paper. Online classes also give teachers the opportunity to present videos and other supporting materials which help the students learn better. This wouldn’t have been possible for most teachers in physical classrooms as most schools are not equipped with the necessary equipment needed for the purpose. 

Working digitally on their assignments and projects gives students the opportunity to improve their technical skills. And in this digital world, technical skills as always needed. These skills would definitely help the students in the long run. Online education is also a boon for people who want to restart their education after a pause or want to pursue higher studies while managing their jobs and/or families.

In earlier times, many married women as well as women with young kids had to drop out of their college to take care of their households and children. Now, with online education, such people can restart and complete their education without having to compromise their family life. 

Although online education is highly beneficial, it also has a few disadvantages. Schools used to be a place where young children met, made friends and played together. Kids often looked forward to going to school to meet their friends and have fun. Online education doesn’t allow students to experience the fun of school life in the same way.

The students also need to practice self-discipline and focus on their studies as they don’t have a teacher to scold them if they slack off. But despite these few disadvantages, online education has indeed helped students a lot and is highly beneficial.

Even without considering the general informational exposure that the internet delivers, online academic courses and learning initiatives are becoming more aware of the needs of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and this means that people from such backgrounds are in a much better position to learn and progress than they used to be.

The biggest argument that raises doubt over online learning is the quality of online courses in comparison to conventional courses. Are such online courses good enough for employers to take notice? The second biggest argument is the current reality that faces many people from disadvantaged backgrounds, despite the improvements made in this area in recent years – they do not have the level of basic access needed to benefit from online learning. In fact, there are numerous sources of evidence that claim disadvantaged students are not receiving anywhere near the sort of benefits that online learning institutions and promoters are trying to instigate. Currently there are many organisations, campaigns and initiatives that are working to expand access to higher education. With such high participation, it can be argued that it is only a matter of time before the benefits are truly realised, but what about the global online infrastructure?

There is another argument that is very difficult to dispel, and that is the response of different types of students to the online learning paradigm. Evidence shows that there are certain groups of students that benefit from college distance learning much more than other groups. One advantage of the traditional classes over online classes is that students who are not disciplined enough may not be able to sail through successfully because there is nobody to push them around. With traditional classes however, there are rules to put them in check. As such, students attending traditional classes are more likely to be committed to their education (Donovan et al 286).

Another advantage of the traditional classes is all the doubts that students might be having regarding a given course content can be cleared by the instructor on the spot, unlike online learning whereby such explanations might not be as coherent as the student would have wished.

With the traditional classes, students are rarely provided with the course materials by their instructors, and they are therefore expected to take their own notes. This is important because they are likely to preserve such note and use them later on in their studies. In contrast, online students are provided with course materials in the form of video or audio texts (Sorenson and Johnson 116).

They can also download such course materials online. Such learning materials can be deleted or lost easily compared with handwritten class notes, and this is a risk. Although the basic requirements for a student attending online classes are comparatively les in comparison to students attending traditional classes, nonetheless, it is important to note that online students are also expected to be internet savvy because all learning takes place online.

This would be a disadvantage for the regular student; only that internet savvy is not a requirement. Students undertaking online learning are likely to be withdrawn because they hardly interact one-on-one with their fellow online students or even their instructors. The only form of interaction is online. As such, it becomes hard for them to develop a special bond with other students and instructors. With traditional learning however, students have the freedom to interact freely and this helps to strengthen their existing bond.

Online learning is convenient and has less basic requirements compared with traditional learning. It also allows learners who would have ordinarily not gone back to school to access an education. However, online students do not benefit from a close interaction with their peers and instructors as do their regular counterparts. Also, regular students can engage their instructors more easily and relatively faster in case they want to have certain sections of the course explained, unlike online students.

Just 2 years back, the idea of online education was almost incomprehensible to common minds. But now Online classes and the concept of Online Education have taken an important part in a lot of areas. Ever since the pandemic in 2020, the governments forced people to stay in their homes for almost half a year. All these wastes of months took a lot of toll on people’s livelihoods and children’s education. The educational institutes had to find a solution. So they moved towards online classes or online sessions. This opened a whole new form of education which the world never had hoped for. Students had more access to attend these online classes without traveling to a faraway place or spending a lot of time getting ready to go to universities or college. Even after the pandemic ended and the world is going back to the way it was. Online education has become a normal practice now for a lot of college institutions. Even after all these advantages, some students still prefer the offline or face-to-face form of education. Let’s discuss the main differences between online and offline education in great detail

Online Education

Online education is also called distance learning. It’s a format of education that can be done from a far distance. Online education is done mainly through the internet. Students can use either portable devices like Mobile Phones and Laptops or stick to traditional desktop PCs. The Most used application for online learning is Zoom, a Chinese app. There are also some pretty good alternatives like Discord etc. All these apps are free to use which makes them far more accessible for students of all backgrounds. The only challenging part of online education is getting a digital device. You can buy laptops and mobile phones from the market at a huge variety of prices. There are always some mobile phone or laptop options available in your budget.

Online education-providing institutes also provide learning material in soft forms i.e. PDFs and Docs. These can be used at any time and unlike books, you do not need to carry heavy books all the time. Online education also allows you to take classes/lectures from all over the world. This saves both time and expenses as some students are forced to relocate to a whole new region away from their families. This makes it hard for students to live leisurely and focus on their studies.

Offline Education

Offline Education or previously known as traditional and face-to-face education is the most common method of giving out education. Online classes are great for lower expenses and are easier to get but Offline classes are far more beneficial as a whole. Students can ask about problems the teacher during the lecture or ask other students about the problem. This helps in understanding the topics more easily. Offline education also gives a chance for students to make friends and get social. This enables them to develop every day talking skills and to be able to hold conversations in all types of scenarios. Offline education also gives a chance for students to get punctual and wake early and clean themselves. All of these habits help us in becoming more accepted into society.

No one can claim either online or offline as a better form of education. It depends on the preferences of every student independently. Some may prefer going to college physically and experience studying physically some may prefer staying home and do studying on their laptops.

Harvard Should Say Less. Maybe All Schools Should.

Last fall, Harvard University’s leadership found itself at the center of a highly public, highly charged fight about taking an official institutional position in connection with the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the war in Gaza.

First, critics denounced the school for being too slow to issue a statement on the matter. Then, after a statement was released by Harvard’s president, Claudine Gay, and 17 other senior Harvard officials, some critics attacked it for being insufficiently forceful in condemning the Hamas attack, while others criticized it for being insufficiently forceful in condemning Israel’s retaliation.

One of the many sources of confusion at the time was that Harvard, like many other universities, did not have a formal policy on when and whether to issue official statements. In the absence of a policy, Harvard not only had to figure out what to say or not say; it also had to deal with the perception that not issuing a statement, or not issuing one fast enough, would in effect be a statement, too.

Fortunately, Harvard now does have official guidance for a policy on university statements, in the form of a report issued on Tuesday by a faculty working group on which we served together as chairs, and endorsed by the president, provost and deans. The report recommends a policy based on both principle and pragmatism, one that we hope can enable Harvard — and any other school that might consider adopting a similar policy — to flourish in our highly polarized political era.

In brief, the report says that university leaders can and should speak out publicly to promote and protect the core function of the university, which is to create an environment suitable for pursuing truth through research, scholarship and teaching. If, for example, Donald Trump presses forward with his announced plan to take “billions and billions of dollars” from large university endowments to create an “American Academy” — a free, online school that would provide an “alternative” to current institutions — Harvard’s leadership can and should express its objections to this terrible idea.

It makes sense for university leaders to speak out on matters concerning the core function of the institution: That is their area of expertise as presidents, provosts and deans. But they should not, the report says, take official stands on other matters. They should not, for instance, issue statements of solidarity with Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, no matter how morally attractive or even correct that sentiment might be.

In addition, the report says, university leaders should make it clear to the public that when students and faculty members exercise their academic freedom to speak, they aren’t speaking on behalf of the university as a whole. The president doesn’t have to repeat this point with regard to every utterance made by the thousands of members of the university. But the university should clarify repeatedly, for as long as it takes to establish the point, that only its leadership can speak officially on its behalf.

This policy might remind some readers of the Kalven Report , a prominent statement of the value of academic “institutional neutrality” issued in 1967 by a University of Chicago committee chaired by the First Amendment scholar Harry Kalven Jr. But while our policy has some important things in common with the Kalven Report, which insisted that the university remain silently neutral on political and social issues, ours rests on different principles and has some different implications.

The principle behind our policy isn’t neutrality. Rather, our policy commits the university to an important set of values that drive the intellectual pursuit of truth: open inquiry, reasoned debate, divergent viewpoints and expertise. An institution committed to these values isn’t neutral, and shouldn’t be. It has to fight for its values, particularly when they are under attack, as they are now. Speaking publicly is one of the tools a university can use in that fight.

Take the use of affirmative action to achieve diversity in higher education admissions. Harvard argued in defense of this idea in the Supreme Court on several occasions — starting in 1978, when the court’s controlling opinion allowing diversity in admissions relied extensively on a brief that Harvard filed, through 2023, when the court rejected the use of race in diversity-based admissions. Harvard’s advocacy all along was far from neutral and would arguably have violated the Kalven principles. On our principles, however, Harvard was justified in speaking out forcefully in support of the method it long used to admit students, because admissions is a core function of the university.

We recognize that some observers, on both the left and the right, may interpret the timing of our report as an attempt to support some point of view they don’t like. That said, our recommended policy is designed not as a response to immediate events but as a response to the changed reality in which the university operates: a world of social media and polarized politics. Both put intense pressure on universities. Both cry out for a policy where before, none was demanded.

On social media, it can sometimes appear that anyone with a claim to Harvard affiliation speaks for the institution, even as we in the university know otherwise. We’re not naïve enough to think that just announcing a policy will change what the internet thinks. It will take repetition, emphasis and consistency to make the policy widely understood.

In an age of polarized politics, we also need a policy that will spare university leaders from having to spend all their time deciding which global and national events deserve statements and which statements from the university community merit official repudiation. On many, maybe most, important issues, no official statement made by the university could satisfy the many different constituencies on campus.

In formulating its recommendation, our faculty working group struggled with some challenges that don’t have great solutions. For example, we didn’t address, much less solve, the hard problem of when the university should or shouldn’t divest its endowment funds from a given portfolio. The Kalven Report claimed that a decision to divest is a statement in itself and so the university shouldn’t do it. In contrast, we saw divestment as an action rather than a statement the university makes. We therefore treated it as outside our mandate, even though symbolic meaning can be attached to it, just as it can to other actions (including investing in the first place). Our report encourages the university to explain its actions and decisions on investment and divestment — much as Harvard’s President Larry Bacow did in 2021 when the university decided to reduce its investments in fossil fuels, and much as President Derek Bok did when the university didn’t divest from South Africa in the 1980s — but that’s all.

Our committee members represented a wide range of academic specialties and points of view. We disagreed, and still disagree, about a lot. At a university, that’s both normal and highly desirable. Ultimately, a university is a community unified by a commitment to trying to get it right, not by a single answer to what is right in every case. Where we converged was on the belief that the university must protect and defend its critically important role and that it undermines its core function if it speaks officially on matters outside it.
