There are numerous ways that we can support our nation’s youth in realising their full potential. To ensure that they can flourish without interference, the government must implement programmes that will aid in combating problems like unemployment, subpar educational institutions, and more.

In a similar vein, it is the responsibility of citizens to push our children to excel in all areas. Our favourite people will lose their spark if we don’t believe in them and discourage them all the time. We should ensure that they have the wind beneath their wings to soar far, rather than pulling them down by guarding the links to their wings.

Regardless of a person’s gender, caste, religion, colour, or any other attribute, they must all be granted equal opportunity. The nation’s true talent is being eroded by several nepotistic and favouritism problems. This needs to be eliminated right away. Every young person needs to have the opportunity to demonstrate their worth, and that opportunity needs to be extended equally to all of them.

In other words, we have to give our youth the chance to build our country. They possess a perspective that the older generations do not, as they are the future. Their enthusiasm and passion need to be directed in the right direction to guarantee that a nation grows and prospers.

One cannot overstate the significance of youth in the process of building a nation. They actively promote change and advancement in addition to being the recipients of development benefits. Understanding the potential of youth can contribute to the growth of more creative, prosperous, cohesive societies. Governments, corporations, and communities must all make major investments in youth empowerment. They also need to create an atmosphere that supports their involvement by providing them with leadership, jobs, and educational opportunities. The only way for nations to prosper in the twenty-first century is to harness the energy, creativity, and idealism of youth.

Youth in Politics: Challenges, Importance, Role (Essay and Debate)

Political participation: overview and faced challenges

“Where few take part in decisions there is little democracy; the more participation there is in decisions, the more democracy there is” (Verba & Nie, 1972). The present statement proves that the political presence of different individuals has a huge impact on democracy and policy. Hence, the present article will attempt to tackle the political participation of youth in the field of politics.

Meaningful political participation

So, what is the role of youth in politics after all.

Youth in Politics

Political participation refers to “those voluntary activities by which members of a society share in the selection of rulers and, directly or indirectly, in the formation of public policy” (McClosky, 1968). In other words, it encompasses citizens’ activities that affect politics in general. These participatory activities include voting, demonstrating, contacting public officials, boycotting, attending party rallies, guerrilla gardening, posting blogs, volunteering, joining flash mobs, signing petitions, buying fair-trade products, and even suicide protests (Jan W. van, 2021). According to Weiss (2020), even though “existing definitions of political participation are adequate to capture youth participation; the current literature is inconsistent in the inclusion of new modes of participation that are increasingly common among young adults.” In the same vein, Dan Maxon believes that in the youth field, political participation is used loosely to indicate activities, phenomena, and practices. He also points out that some forms of participation have a limited impact on policy-making such as youth activism and youth social action; the alternative use of public spaces; and political memes and online political debates. The latter forms of participation can take place away from political institutions, which makes political participation a challenging term to define.  Apparently, almost every activity by some citizens somehow can be understood sometimes as a form of political participation (van Deth, 2001).

Youth constitute a large portion of the population in every community. Consequently, it is imperative to give them a voice and include them in political decision-making. Not only is inclusiveness “a fundamental political and democratic right” but it is also “crucial to building stable and peaceful societies and developing policies that respond to the specific needs of younger generations.”(Goudie et al, 2018).

According to the OECD’s guide, many benefits can come from “putting youth at the heart of the government’s strategies and initiatives”:

  • Taking advantage of the demographic transition : the youth represent a large portion of the population, which means that their participation can have a great impact on the balance of power. As a result, empowering the youth to take action socially, economically, and politically is of great importance.
  • Encouraging innovation and economic development : youth is a great source of innovative and original ideas. Hence, engaging them and encouraging their active participation can boost the development of societies.
  • Building active citizenship : only through taking on the duty to make important decisions will the youth understand how crucial their role is. When policymakers address their needs and demands, civic behaviour is strengthened and trust and transparency are promoted between the government and the citizens.
  • Encouraging an online debate: living in a digital age, and understanding how technology works are useful to improve youth interaction and engagement.

Bárta (2021) points out that there are four main aims of youth political participation:

  • Right-based aims: youth actually have access to mechanisms that enable them to participate effectively.
  • Empowerment aims : youth speak their minds and express themselves freely regarding decision-making and political processes.
  • Efficiency aims : allow the youth to develop informed processes and regulations.
  • Developmental aims : enable the youth to acquire the necessary skills and competencies to become efficient actors.

It is safe to conclude that supporting the acquisition of commitment and participation from an early age through the reinforcement of civic education and citizenship as well as community involvement is very important.

Obstacles to youth in politics

According to The ACE Electoral Knowledge Network website, youth political engagement occurs at several levels and in various contexts, namely on structural, individual, and organizational levels:

On the structural level, the following elements are included: age requirements to vote or run for office, age restriction in campaigning in some countries, lack of political finance, Social and cultural traditions, and women’s discrimination based on their age and gender.

On the individual level, there exists Distrust in political institutions, a sack of confidence and trust in EMBs, lack of access to/knowledge about political processes, and social and economic exclusion/marginalization.

On the organizational level, there is limited data on youth political participation and a lack of an exclusive EMB youth policy and sustainable funding.

Also referred to as ‘effective practice or participation’, meaningful political participation is a concept with many definitions across the literature. However, the following aspects are common in most definitions according to Bárta et al (2021):

Information and communication : in order to achieve favourable results, young people should have access to the latest information at all times. This fosters their knowledge and hones their awareness about different matters. The implementation of youth-focused conferences, workshops and other capacity-building formats can also facilitate a great deal achieve meaningful political participation.

Authority and voice: giving young people the authority to express their ideas and thoughts publicly is not enough. Other stakeholders in political involvement procedures must also hear and respect their voices.

Power sharing : young people should also have the opportunity where they can actively participate in decision-making processes alongside stakeholders. This obviously should be executed in a transparent environment to attain efficiency.

Transparency and accountability: these elements are imperative to achieve meaningful participation. Young people should be fully briefed on the procedures and mechanisms that are taking place and affecting them. They should be aware of the roles they play, as well as the other players that are engaged and in what capacity.

Material and non-material support : no matter what their background, status, gender, or identity, young people should be able to participate freely and safely. They should also feel welcomed and appreciated during their political activities. Stakeholders should also recognise their efforts and engage them.

According to the Palestinian News and Info Agency ( Wafa ), conforming to democratic standards, young people are to fulfil their role in politics as follows:

  • Strengthening the collective spirit between the youth to value the teamwork experience.
  • Selecting experienced youth with qualified competencies, such as modern management methods.
  • Enhancing a sense of belonging in young people to render them conscious of regulations and laws.
  • Encouraging initiatives among young people by unleashing their energies to get creative and innovative results. Awarding them can be a great incentive too.
  • Pushing young people to open up to other cultures through meetings with youth organizations in different countries, will promote relations of solidarity and cooperation between nations as an alternative to war and aggression tendencies.
  • Enhancing the role of youth in public service through volunteering in different sectors to have a better understanding of their communities.
  • Discovering and adopting the different talents and potentials of young people by giving them opportunities to give, innovate and develop in various practical, scientific, artistic and other fields. Investing in their capacities would have many benefits in the future
  • Promoting the values of tolerance, goodwill, and acceptance of the “other” from a position of difference and acknowledging their existence.
  • Supporting the plurality of ideas and convictions in society as part of the values and principles of democracy creates a safety valve for the promotion of the general community and the official political environment.

To conclude, creating a legitimate, accountable, democratic system requires parity of the political presence of its members. The more all parties in society are involved in the political aspects, the more the country will strive. Young people, who make up an important party usually in countries, play a huge role in the future of politics. Not only do they come up with innovative solutions, but also one can notice a number of positive outcomes such as enhanced social skills, better conduct, higher academic performance, higher self-esteem, and higher self-efficacy. As a result, it is time for decision-makers to act in order to involve the youth in policy-making, enabling them to participate meaningfully.

The Role of Youth in India

Essay No. 01

Youth  is  the  backbone  of  a  country.  Youth  can  play  an  important role  in  building  a   strong  and  united  India.  Unfortunately, for decades, since independence, youth  have  felt  neglected, disillusioned  and  rudderless.  They need  a  sense  of  direction, involvement  and  responsibility.  The  youth  power  should  be harnessed  to  tackle  the  age-old  social  evils  and  other  problems facing  the  country.  Now  that  the  voting  age  has  been  lowered to  18,  youth  can  play  a  critical  role  in  the  coming  years  to transform  the  hopes  and  aspirations  of  the  nation  into  a  reality. They  should  act  judiciously.  They  should  not  become  pawns  in the  hands  of  politicians.  Thus  in   India  of  tomorrow,  youth  is assured  of  a  decisive  role  in  the  task  of  nation-building  even though  indirectly.

Youth  in  any  country  form  its  backbone.  It  is  on  youths  shoulders  that the  responsibility  for  change,  progress  and  innovations  lies.  Youth  are  starry eyed,  full  of  idealism  and  bubbling  with  energy  to  honestly  fight  for  a cause.  Every  age  suffers  from  the  conservation  of  its  elders.  It  is  the  youth only  who  have  the  necessary  courage  and  initiative  to  break  out  the  taboos and  crippling  practices.  Mao-tse  Tung  of  China  realised  this  latent  power and  dedication  of  the  youth  of  his  country.  He,  therefore,  entrusted  them with  the  Cultural  Revolution—a  movement  intended   to  weed  out  the deadwood  in  the  party,  who  stood  for  status  quo.  Again  in  our  own. country,  our  youth  played  a  significant  role  in  the  freedom   struggle  and made  considerable  sacrifices.

But,  unfortunately,  since  the  attainment  of  Independence,  the  youth  in  the country  have  been going  adrift. They have  not  been  associated  with the contemporary  national  problems.  They have  not  been  assimilated  in  the mainstream  of  national  life.  The  youth   feel  alienated  and,  therefore to  a certain  extent,  frustrated.  Unless  there  are  worthy  causes  or  challenging problems  to  give  our  youth  a  chance  to  show  their  mettle,  there   is  bound to  be  a  sense  of  directionlessness  and  dissatisfaction.  And  the  youth India  for  decades  has  felt  neglected.  Consequently  their  energies  and  stamina are  getting  misdirected  into  negative  thinking  and  destructive  activities. Partly  the  leadership  of  the  country  is  responsible  for  this  state  of  affairs vis-a-vis  the  youth.

If  one  surveys  the  national  scene  today  and  studies  the  structure—social, economic  and  religious—of  Indian  society,  one  can  easily  earmark  the fields  and  problems  which  need  youths  dynamism  and  dedication. Mahatma  Gandhi  and  Jawaharlal  Nehru  dreamt  of  a  beautiful,  united and  strong  India.  The  youth  of  today.  can  play   a  sterling  role  in  the realization  of  this  dream.  Not  only  will  the  youth  lend  a  helping  hand  in tackling  the  ills  affecting  the  country,  but  also  they  will  not  feel  bitter and  alienated,

We  are  well  aware  of  the  extensive  damage  that  is  being  done  to  the fabric  of  our  national  structure  by  parochial  thinking  along  caste  and communal  lines.  It  is  time,  we  shed  our  partisan  prejudices  and  worked jointly  for  the  progress  of  the  county.  It  is  time  a  concerted  effort  was made  to  rid  our  national  life  of  caste  and  communal  strife,  so  that  there could  be  a  homogeneous,  peaceful  and  progressive India.  And  no  other section  of  society  is  more  suited  for  this  onerous  task  than  the  youth. ,They  can,  with  their  liberal  outlook,  decide  to shed  casteism  and  communal  bias  and  propagate  this  thinking  among.  others  also.  They  can  go  in  for inter-caste  and  inter-community  marriages  and  thus  create  fellow-feeling among  different  sets  of  people.  They  can  also  decide  to  drop  their  caste-reflecting  surnames.  This  will  enable  them  to  carve  out  their  own  individual identities  rather  than  falling  hack  upon  the  goodwill  of  the  caste.

Another  important  task  that  the  youth  can  successfully  undertake  is  to eliminate  the  curse  of  dowry.  Dowry  is  responsible  for  a  large  number  of  deaths  of  innocent  married  girls  and  harassment  of  the  parents  of  the marriageable  daughters.  The  birth  of  a  daughter  in  Indian  society  is  an unwelcome  event.  It  generates  gloom  and  despair  among  the  parents  simply because  of  the  large  dowry  which  will  be required  for   marrying  the  girl. The  youth—both  boys  and  girls—can  take  a  pledge  not  to  give  and  accept dowry.  Also  they  can  force  their  parents  to  stop  this  desirable  practice.  This  problem  directly  concerns  the  youth  themselves.  Therefore,  they  can easily  tight  it  and  save  lives  from  being  lost.  The  youth  in  the  cities  can get  in  touch  with  the  youth  in  the  rural,  areas  and  educate them with a view  to  creating  a  mass  movement  for the  abolition  of  dowry. Where legal  sanctions  against  dowry   have  nearly  failed,  this  social  movement  by the  youth  will  prove  effective.

Another  nagging  problem  that  India  faces  today  is  that of population explosion. According to the 1991  census,  India’s  population  was 84.63 crores.  In  a  country,  where  every  minute  a  child  is  born,  all planning  is bound  to  come  to  nought.  All  economic  progress  is  certain  to  be  nullified by  the  increase  in  the population.  With  ever  increasing  mouths  to  feed, the  government’s  efforts  to  strengthen  the  economic  situation  have  yielded poor  results.  Inflation has become  a  chrome  feature.  The  masses  of  pool people  have  been  reeling  under  the  impact  of  rising  prices.  Government has  no  doubt  initiated  several  measures  to  curb  population.  However,  this again  is  a:problem  which  requires  mass-education  about  the.  ill-effects  of large  families  on  the  nation,  on  the  family  as  a  unit,  and  even  on  the health  of  the  mother  and  on  the  future  of  children.  It  is  again  the  youth  of the  country  who  can  be  of  tremendous  help  in  solving  this  nearly unsurmountabl  problem.  First,  they  themselves  should  resolve  to  limit their  own  families  when  they  get  married.  The  youth  can  organise  camps in  the  rural  areas  with  a  view  to  educating  them  about  the  benefits  of small  families.  The  village  folk  are  generally  suspicious  of  government officials,  nurses  and  doctors.  If  a  ground  has  been  prepared,  then  the  family planning  officials  will  meet  with  better  success,  as  they  will  get  the villagers  Cooperation.

Our  is  a  developing  nation.  Our  resources  are  limited.  Crores  of  rupees  are being  spent  by  the government  on  literacy  programmes ,  like  adult  education. Still the literacy  rate  remains  pretty  low.  The  educated  youth,  particularly the  students,  should  come  forward  during  the  holidays,  and  visit  villages to  teach  the  villagers.  They  can  teach  them  elementary  reading  and  writing They  can  also  educate  them  about  the  laws  of  hygiene  and  need  for cleanliness,  and  harmful  effects  of  drinking  and  tobacco  chewing.

Widespread  corruption  is  another  problem  which  can  be  tackled  by  the youth.  They  should  organize  themselves  and  form  anti-corruption  cells (independent  of  government  control)  and  take  up  particular  cases. corruption  and  expose  the  guilty both  politicians  and  public  servants.  They, have  the  required  boldness .They  have  the  sincerity  of  purpose  to  unravel Corrupt  deals  and  officials  and  put  them  to  shame.  This  will  prevent  people from indulging  in  corrupt  practices.

Of  late,  the  government  has  become  conscious  of  the  need  to  tap  the youth-power  The  youth  are  being  associated  with  the  political  and  social, activities  more  actively.  It  is  essential  that  the  Young  and  dynamic  youth should  be  given  ample  -opportunities  to  participate  in  the  task  of  nation building. The  should  follow  the  footsteps  of  youth  leaders  like  late  Sanjay Gandhi  and  Rajiv  Gandhi  who  started  their  political  career  with  Indian Youth  Congress (IYC).

With  the  lowering  Of  the  voting  age  to  18,  the  young  have  suddenly  become political important.  The new voters can decisively tilt the political scales at a general election. Realising this, all the political parties are trying to involve more youth in their political agenda. It depends on the youth not to become pawn in the hands of politicians, but to be judicious. The youth should cast their vote after weighing all the pros and cons. Undoubtedly, in the India of tomorrow the young are going to play a decisive role in choosing their leaders. It is a big responsibility and it will involve the in the task of national reconstruction. Hence, the youth is going to play a crucial role in the coming years to translate the hopes and aspirations of the nations into reality.

Youth  is  the  most  vital  human  resource  of  the  nation  on  whom  the present  and  future  of  the  country  depend.  The  Department  of  Youth Affairs  and  Sports  is  implementing  a  number  of  schemes  of  youth development.  Several  initiatives  taken  in  the  past  have  given  a  new thrust  to  the  youth  programmes  for  channelising  the  abundant  energy of  the  youth  into  constructive  activities.  The  National  Youth  Policy also  seeks  to  provide  the  youth  with  new  opportunities  to  participate  in nation-building  activities.

Essay No. 02

Role of Youth

Youth are the valuable human resource of every country. They constitute about one-third. of the total population of India. During the freedom struggle, the youth of our country played a significant role. But after independence,’ they have become inactive. There is a generation gap between the old -and the young. Most of the youth are misdirected. They should be guided and their energies should be utilized for the progress of the nation. India today is burdened with many social, political and economic problems. The youth can-come forward and check them, and work for the betterment of the nation. The youth can also provide relief to afflicted persons during natural calamities. By performing a constructive role, the youth can make India preposterous in every field.

Youth constitute about 34% of the total population of India. The youth today have often been misunderstood by the elders. There has always been a struggle between tradition and modernity. The elders consider the youth to be immature and inexperienced. The widening generation gap has made them feel alienated. The growing population has complicated the problem of unemployment. Reservations and nepotism have further complicated the problems of unemployment. Schools and colleges do not groom them for a bright future. All these factors have frustrated the youth.

Students constitute majority of the youth. They indulge in acts of indiscipline in different schools, colleges and universities. Thus, their energies are being misused for destructive purposes. They hold rallies and resort to strikes, etc. They go to the extent of taking law into their own hands. They lack proper guidance and good leadership. They should be guided so that they use their energies for concrete purposes.

The students alone cannot be blamed for this. Political leaders exploit student power for their own political ends. If there is good leadership, students’ power can be utilized for bringing about social, economic and political reforms.

India today is facing many problems in the social and economic sphere. Corruptions, increasing population, illiteracy rate, social evils etc. are some of the burning problems. The youth should take an active part to solve these problems, which have delayed the progress of the country.

The population of India has crossed the one billion mark. This has hindered the progress of the country. Though various programmes and reforms have been implemented yet they didn’t bring any positive effects. Family planning programmes have not been totally accepted by the people. Youth organisations should take up the responsibility of educating the poor about the benefits of family planning. Illiteracy is another burning problem in our country. The youth should encourage the illiterate parents to send their children to school. They should initiate steps to teach the illiterate people. They could give them elementary education. They should also educate them about the need for cleanliness.

One of the worst social problems faced by India is the evil of dowry. The youth should come forward and fight against this practice. They should not come under the pressure of their parents to demand, give or accept dowry.

Services of youth can he taken for national integration. The youth should fight against communalism, casteism, linguism, regionalism, etc. The youth should play a responsible role for the betterment of the country. By performing a constructive role, the youth can bring prosperity in India.

Essay No. 03

Indian Youth

India’s population is more than 100 crores, out of which 40% are in the age group of 15 and 30. They form a huge reservoir of energy and cream of the country. Wisdom and discretion are not the monopoly of the elders alone. The young men and women are also intelligent and wise and much of a nation’s progress and future depend upon them. According to Samuel Johnson, “Young men have more virtue than old men; they have more generous sentiments in every respect.” And in the words of Lord Byron:

The days of our youth are the days

of our glory;

And the myrtle and ivy of sweet

two and twenty

Are worth all our laurels, though

ever so plenty.

Young people are full of abundant energy, courage, spirit for adventure, imagination, hope and ambition. These can be very well used in constructive and developmental activities. These should not be allowed either to go waste or used for destructive purposes. The young men and women of India should be fully involved in the creative work of nation-building and reconstruction. The younger generation, which is more generous, flexible, sensitive and dynamic, can do wonders if properly guided and motivated. It is with the help of the young men and women of China that Mao Tsetung, the chairman of the People’s Republic of China (1949-59) and of the Chinese Communist Party, effected the great Cultural Revolution which transformed the whole of China into one of the great political and military powers of the world. Mao was well aware of the power, exuberance, spontaneity, ebullience and unlimited energy of the youth and used these to great advantage for himself and China. Besides China, there are many other countries like France and Indonesia, etc. where the youth has helped in changing the course of history in more ways than one.

It is easy to blame the youth of India for impatience, indiscipline, irreverence for the elders, authority and social customs. But all these reflect one-sidedness and lack of proper understanding on the part of the eiders and grown-ups. No doubt the youth of modern India has its own limitations and problems, etc. but these can be removed or decreased to a great extent by sympathy, understanding and appreciation. If the youth of India have any shortcomings and faults, the elders are to blame because the former mirror the latter.

Proper orientation and positive steps are needed to engage the youth of the country in nation-building activities. Their zeal, enthusiasm and energy need to be channelised in developmental activities and social reconstruction. The Indian youth, full of inexhaustible power, is always eager to do something positive, constructive and appreciable for the society and the nation.

In order to harness the youth-power of the country, a National Youth Policy has been framed to instill in the youth a deep awareness of national ideals of secularism, non-violence, integration and our ancient historical and cultural heritage. It also aims at developing qualities of discipline, self-reliance, leadership, justice, fair play, sporting spirit and scientific temper so as to enable them to combat superstitions, obscurantism and other numerous social ills and evils.

With the above objectives in view, adventure institutions, cultural centres, Yuvak Kendras, and sports centres, etc. have been established in various important cities and towns of the country. For example, Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi and National Adventure Foundation are two important institutions for promotion of adventure. These provide training facilities and financial assistance for undertaking mountaineering, biking, trekking, expeditions, explorations, cycle-tours, etc. to promote a feeling of oneness and unity. The young men and women from one part of the country exchange visits with their counterparts from other parts. It helps them to familiarize themselves with different environments, lifestyles and social customs.

Then there is the National Service Scheme (NSS). Its main objective is to involve the college and +2 level students on a voluntary and selective basis in the programme of social service and national development. Started in 1969, now it is being implemented in all the states and union territories and covers over 5,000 colleges. Under this scheme, rural and slum reconstruction, repair of roads and school-buildings, village ponds, tanks, tree plantation, conservation of environment, health and family welfare, and adult and women education, etc. are undertaken. NSS students also help local authorities in implementing various relief and rehabilitation programmes. At times of natural calamities, like floods, droughts, famines and earthquakes, NSS students and volunteers play a very important, positive and constructive role.

There are special schemes for the tribal youth to give them vocational training and to update their skills to help them in self-employment. There are youth hostels strewn all over the country to promote travel among young men and women, by providing cheap accommodation when on educational tours and excursions to historical and cultural places. The Nehru YuvakKendras, about 446 in number and spread all over the country, serve non-students and rural youth to improve their personality and employment capability. Under the international scouting and guiding movement, the Bharat Scouts and Guides and All India Boys Scouts Association are inculcating in the Indian youth a spirit of loyalty, patriotism and thoughtfulness for others.

But still more and vigorous efforts are needed to solve the problems of the youth. They are a frustrated lot for want of proper employment opportunities. Our education system does not take note of their requirements and, therefore, fails to prepare them well for life and career. The red-tapism, nepotism, caste considerations and favouritism further add to their problems and frustration. For want of proper leadership and ideals, they suffer from lack of direction, purpose and decisiveness. The task of tackling these and other problems of the youth is difficult and challenging but not impossible. It is the duty of the government, voluntary agencies, corporate world and the society to see that youth-power is properly harnessed, that young men and women are properly educated and trained and subsequently satisfactorily employed. The advanced and developed countries have been investing heavily for the last many decades in schemes and programmes related to the training, education, orientation and welfare of their youth.

With the passage of time, the number of young people in India is likely to increase and so it becomes imperative that more effective ways and means are found to use their vast energy in economic reconstruction and social regeneration activities. Perhaps, one of the best ways can be their greater involvement in welfare schemes, community development programmes and nation-building activities so as to generate in them a sense of purpose, pride, self-confidence and relevance. It is only by such means and efforts that the young people in India can be given the much needed self-confidence and a sense of fulfillment and belonging. They can be inspired to work in the slums, villages and hamlets in their spare time. They can be urged to adopt families, villages or clusters of houses to improve sanitation, education, social awareness, economic condition and skills of the people residing in them.

Marisa O Ensor, PhD, LLM

Course Description: This seminar examines the key concepts and theories underpinning both social studies of childhood and youth, and international development scholarship and practice. Beginning with the recognition that engaging young people in a constructive manner constitutes a development imperative, we will analyze the role of youth as significant actors in international and local community development as well as key players in civil society and peacebuilding. Topics to be discussed include young people’s education and health, their involvement in labor and contribution to livelihood strategies, environmental issues, the situation of youngsters living in especially difficult circumstances, and youth’s engagement in peacebuilding, social and economic justice and community organizing. We will also consider how youth’s potential for participation in development processes may be undermined by poverty, inadequate access to education and health facilities, exploitation, violence, insecurity, and displacement. Attention will be paid to the ways in which youth’s involvement in process of international development in shaped by globalization and growing international inequality, as well as more local conditions and cultural practices. The approach will be interdisciplinary, combining theoretical and practical dimensions, and acknowledging the contributions of social scientists, human rights advocates, and young people themselves to youth-inclusive development research, policy and practice. Discussions, lectures and assigned readings provide the bulk of the course materials, supplemented with occasional videos and guest speakers.

Young people become engaged in civic life for many different reasons, and via multiple paths. Much research on the reasons for youth civic engagement has been cross-sectional, searching for antecedents to a range of “pro-civic ” attitudes or behaviors. This research assumes a relatively stable lifeworld for young people. For example, it assumes that the meaning of volunteering or service is sufficiently similar across multiple contexts to remain a valid and stable indicator. By extension, it also assumes that the lifeworld of young people today is not undergoing a period of rapid, and perhaps even radical, change. Our research began with the assumption that it is possible that a series of structural and

If old and experienced people are eyes and ears of a nation, the youth is her limbs. A young man’s energy, enthusiasm, vigour and vitality make him one of the most important cogs in the wheel of development. India is a large nation—its population is approximately 1300 million. Of this, 65% is the population of people between 18 years and 35 years who can be technically called the youth. The young men of India come from various strata and are engaged in a variety of occupations but all of them have one thing in common—their energy and their idealism. It is their uncorrupted mind and unspent strength which can be of immense use in the nation building activities.

Nation building is a vast task consisting of varied jobs. All these jobs lead to one goal—a more prosperous, clean and safe nation. One of the prerequisites for using youth in the nation building activities is that they are gainfully employed. For this, it becomes important not only to have sufficient and varied employment opportunities but also proper training for them. Another necessary pre-requisite is that the youth is well educated, well fed and healthy and has a personality and individuality of his own. A young man with healthy mind and healthy body is virtually indispensable for the nation. However, all his energy, his idealism is of no use if it is not directed properly. Therefore, it is also important to have enlightened and honest leaders who can channel the energy of the youth in the nation building activities.

One of the biggest problems facing India today is illiteracy. Uneducated man is a liability and not an asset to the nation. So it becomes important to spread the light of learning everywhere. And who is more suitable for this stupendous task than the youth? Young men and women can not only spend their time and energy in teaching others but can act as a catalyst to start literacy mission as a mass movement. The experiences of Kerala, Burdwan and Kolhapur have shown that the school going teenagers and the college going young men and women could do in one year what all the government’s machinery could not do in 40 years.

Another great task that can be done by the youth is rural development. The spreading of the message of cleanliness, child care and healthy living can be done very well by the youth. Also, they can be used to spread the information about better agricultural techniques, better animal husbandry techniques etc. They can also be used to educate villagers about new avenues of employment open to them—like agro-based and forest-based industries. A young man has the knowledge and technical skills to understand intricacies of new developments and also has the enthusiasm to transmit his knowledge in simple words to the villagers. Youth can also be used in providing safe and clean drinking water, better dwellings and in other works of rural construction. A young man has the energy, it only needs to be tapped. This can be done by having special “Shram-Daan” classes in schools and colleges and using their vacation time fruitfully.

The youth can be very effective in checking crimes. Their idealism coupled with their courage can be used by the police to check petty crimes, eve-teasing and also drug-trafficking etc. Youth vigilance committees can keep a check on the doubtful characters of the locality, they can also be used to prevent a misguided youth from taking to crimes and drugs. At the time of disturbances and riots, these commit

ees can be very helpful. In fact, they can act as a very good source of information to the police in keeping rioteers in check. The youth can also be used to prevent hoarding and black-marketing by the merchants.

A number of irrational and obscurantist social customs and taboos can be broken by the youth power. Dowry, a big menace that it is, can be prevented only by the young men and women. If they refuse to give or take dowry themselves and form associations which help in bringing to book dowry seekers, the demise of this brutal custom cannot be far. Female infanticide, women’s educational deprivation and widow remarriage restrictions are other social evils, that can be prevented by youth. A young man’s mind always wants good reasons and rationale to accept any theory. Therefore, he can be most effective in fighting the evil of casteism and communalism. They can even be used to prevent electoral malpractices.

However, for all this work, it is a healthy and happy young man is what is required. So, his childhood should not be deprived of healthy upbringing and good education. Also, frustrated and unemployed youth are most easily exploited by selfish elements and they are most prone to incitement to violence and destruction. So, it is important that he is so trained that he is gainfully employed. The example of Germany is very clear. The same young men who fought against communism and won their freedom are becoming xenophobic and racist. The reason is their frustration with the system. Let us prevent our young men from going the same way. For this, our parents, teachers and leaders have a great responsibility.

As examples of Indonesia—where students overthrew Sukarno, Philippines—where they helped overthrow Marcos and usher in democracy, or E. Europe—where they were in forefront of movement for democracy, or Burma-where they were relentlessly fighting for democracy and freedom show that youth power is great. Even in our own struggle for freedom, students and young lawyers played an important role. Who can forget the selfless sacrifices of Bhagat Singh,, Chandra Shekhar, Rajguru and many others. Nehru and Bose were the representatives of the Indian youth in freedom struggle. Today the nation which got independence by youth’s efforts, needs them to become great once again. Youth should take up the challenge.

Happiness Crisis: Why Our Youth Are Struggling

Insights from the world happiness report and a psychologist for adolescents..

Posted May 7, 2024 | Reviewed by Monica Vilhauer

  • U.S. youth happiness is declining and it's up to the adults to do something about it.
  • Research shows a surge in youth mental health issues; social media is a culprit, but not the only one.
  • Meaningful connections are dwindling for today's teens and they're feeling lonelier than ever.

Did you see the recent World Happiness Report?

The World Happiness Report started in 2012 and is a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the WHR’s Editorial Board. The purpose is to increase attention on well-being and help guide governmental policies by evaluating the state of happiness in the world. They get their rankings by looking at data from the Gallup World Poll in which about 1,000 participants from each country respond to questions about their life satisfaction from the years 2021-2023. The report is based on a 3-year average (World Happiness Report, 2024).

In 2023, the U.S. ranked 15th but it dropped to 23rd this year. The reason? People under the age of 30.

People under 30 ranked 62nd out of 143 countries, while people over the age of 60 ranked 10th. And for those under 30, females reported lower happiness than males. The drop in youth happiness isn’t new—it started about 10 years ago but was exacerbated during the pandemic. It appears youth have not recovered from the drop and are now at “ midlife crisis” level of discontent, something we normally don’t see until people are in their late 30s or early 40s.

Reasons for Lower Happiness

Some of you might remember when the US Surgeon General declared a youth mental health crisis at the end of 2021. He brought attention to rising mental health issues in youth, including persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, as well as increases in suicidal thoughts and behaviors (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). We have amassed sufficient research demonstrating that social media significantly heightens anxiety and depression among teens and can confidently assert its role as one of the contributing factors to the crisis. But we can’t solely blame social media, especially when it helped get us through the pandemic.

I recently read the book The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness . My key takeaway was how important meaningful relationships are for longevity and overall life satisfaction. And my work with adolescents over the years has shown me how much has shifted in meaningful social interactions for them. Prior to the pandemic, teens and young adults hung out in person much more. They FaceTimed. They were involved in school groups. When things shut down and went virtual, they FaceTimed less and texted more. They stopped hanging out in person. They stopped attending school groups. And they haven’t bounced back.

Most of the teens and young adults I work with tell me they feel lonely or that they want to have a best friend or close friend group desperately. They crave it. But they just can’t seem to create these relationships. They’ll attempt to hang out in person only to be denied. They’ll try to call but get a text back instead. They find ways to hang out in person but their friend is on their phone the whole time. Youth culture has changed and it’s not for the best.

There are other factors as well, especially for young adults. Housing prices are high, there’s greater polarization among us, and increasing income disparities are apparent. But I honestly think those issues would be more manageable (at least from a mental wellness perspective) if we had quality social interactions on a regular basis.

What We’re Going to Do About It

Changing culture isn’t a one-person job. We have to do it together. And as a 47 (soon to be 48) year-old person, I’m enlisting every adult over the age of 30 to join me. It’s up to us. It’s not up to the people struggling to figure out how to be happier. We can’t expect people under 30 to figure this out and get over their crisis. We can’t tell teens to just be happier or ask young adults to improve their mental wellbeing. It’s not going to work.

Here’s what we’re going to do instead:

  • We’re going to realign our lives so we’re living our values. Here's how to get started.
  • We’re going to stop trying to keep up with the Joneses. No offense to anyone with the last name Jones, but I want no part of what you’re doing (unless you’re living in the forest with a bunch of rescue animals, then I want every part of what you’re doing).
  • We’re going to create more meaningful connections in our own lives. We’ll model healthy behaviors and spend quality in-person time with people we genuinely enjoy. If we don’t have people like that, we’re going to go out and find them.
  • We’re going to spend less time on our devices and more time interacting with the world. Traveling, kayaking, going to museums, hiking, attending sporting events, eating out, cooking together, hosting board game nights…
  • We’re going to live within our means so we don’t have to bust our butts to pay off credit cards or to drive an expensive car we don’t need.
  • We’re going to focus on doing things we enjoy, like painting, writing, and making music simply because we enjoy it and not because it’ll make us money.

Notice how these are all things we, the adults over 30, are going to do and nothing about what those under 30 should do? I think we got them into this mess and it’s our job to get them out. We created a society of overconsumption, of trying to keep up with the random neighbor who we don’t really like anyways, of working jobs we hate to pay for things we don’t need, of spending time with people out of obligation rather than with those we truly enjoy. We did this and it’s up to us to undo it.

Are You With Me?

You don’t have to be a parent to care about future generations. We’re all going to be relying on them in one way or another and, personally, I’d rather have them grow up to be adults who are resilient , capable, and happy with meaningful relationships and interests. It’s good for them as individuals and it’s good for our society as a whole. Let’s get going.

Information and Awareness

Social media is a great source of news and updates. It helps raise awareness about social issues and events happening around the world.

Social media can be educational. Many educators and experts share knowledge and resources, aiding in learning.

While social media has its drawbacks, its role in connecting people, spreading information, and aiding education is undeniable.

250 Words Essay on Role of Social Media

The advent of social media.

Social media, a revolutionary tool of the 21st century, has transformed the way we communicate, share information, and perceive the world. It has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives, becoming an indispensable part of our society.

Communication and Information Dissemination

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have made global communication seamless. They allow for instantaneous sharing of ideas, news, and personal experiences. This has democratized information, making it accessible to all, but also poses challenges regarding the spread of misinformation.

Social Activism and Awareness

Social media has become a powerful tool for social activism. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo have utilized these platforms to raise awareness, mobilize people, and effect change. However, the risk of ‘slacktivism’ – passive activism without real-world action – is a concern.

Marketing and Business Strategies

Businesses have leveraged social media for marketing, customer engagement, and brand visibility. They can interact directly with consumers, gather feedback, and tailor their strategies accordingly. The rise of influencer marketing is a testament to this new era of digital commerce.

The Double-Edged Sword

While social media has numerous benefits, it also has its drawbacks. Issues such as privacy breaches, cyberbullying, and the detrimental effects on mental health cannot be overlooked.

In conclusion, the role of social media in our lives is multifaceted. It has the potential to be a force for good, fostering global connections, social change, and business innovation. Yet, we must also be mindful of its pitfalls and strive to use it responsibly.

500 Words Essay on Role of Social Media

In the contemporary world, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has transformed the way we communicate, interact, and perceive the world around us. This essay explores the role of social media, focusing on its impact on personal relationships, public discourse, and business.

Personal Relationships

Social media has drastically altered how we maintain and form relationships. It has enabled us to stay connected with loved ones, irrespective of geographical boundaries. We can share our experiences, milestones, and everyday moments, fostering a sense of closeness. However, this digital connection also has its pitfalls. It can lead to an over-reliance on virtual interactions, potentially undermining the value of face-to-face communication. Moreover, the constant comparison with others’ curated lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety.

Public Discourse

Social media has democratized information dissemination, changing the dynamics of public discourse. It has given a platform to voices that were previously marginalized, leading to greater inclusivity. Social movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo have been amplified through social media, leading to significant societal change. However, this freedom also comes with the risk of misinformation and fake news, which can polarize societies and disrupt democratic processes.

Business and Marketing

In the business world, social media has revolutionized marketing strategies. Businesses can now directly engage with their customers, understand their needs, and tailor their services accordingly. It also provides a cost-effective platform for advertising and brand promotion. However, the use of personal data for targeted advertising raises ethical concerns about privacy and consent.

Social media has also played a pivotal role in education, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has facilitated remote learning, enabling students and teachers to stay connected. It also provides a platform for collaborative learning and knowledge sharing. However, the digital divide and the risk of cyberbullying are significant challenges that need to be addressed.

In conclusion, social media, with its profound impact on personal relationships, public discourse, business, and education, has undeniably reshaped our world. Its role is multifaceted and complex, offering both opportunities and challenges. As digital citizens, it is incumbent upon us to navigate this landscape responsibly, leveraging its potential while being mindful of its pitfalls. The future of social media is dynamic and evolving, reflecting our collective aspirations and challenges as a society. As we move forward, it is crucial to foster a balanced and informed approach to social media use, ensuring it serves as a tool for positive change.
