Thesis life: finishing touch.

wur thesis report

By Yurike Inrumitha

After more than half a year dealing with my thesis, finally, I got to get it finished. It was one of the most relieving moments in my life like I have made one more milestone. Reading hundreds of journals, doing experiments with trials and errors, and writing report overnight on Christmas holidays were paid off.

I will share with you things to do after experiments/data collection. These are based on my own experience in doing a thesis at HAP department.

1. Go to thesis ring and get your report reviewed by fellow colleagues

It was an advantage for me to have “Thesis ring” for my thesis report. For those who are not familiar with this term, “thesis ring” is a short discussion where your colleagues in the department you are in will review your report. You just have to send them your copy and they will help you with your report. Usually, they will review your grammar, diction, and syntax. It is very useful because it will not only improve your English grammar skills but also academic writing skills. A Ph.D. student or other thesis supervisor will moderate the discussion and give useful inputs in addition to the inputs from other participants.

It is not an obligation to come to thesis ring, nevertheless, they strongly advise you to come. I always attended thesis ring because besides getting help, I also would like to help others. It is a good kind of symbiosis mutualism, in my opinion. Even though we seem like trying to look for mistakes from others, we never took it personally because we know that it is for the best of the report 🙂 For me personally, it made me appreciate my friends’ reports more and I learned a lot from them.

2. Follow the academic writing guide

Usually, your supervisor will provide you with a guide on how to write an academic report. It is quite different with conversation language we use every day. I personally still have to struggle when it comes to academic writing. A writing guide will always help you to understand more about an academic report. Or, if you want to go an extra mile to enhance your writing skills, you can go to academic writing class. WUR provides academic writing course (with a special price for students) which you can follow.

3. Print your report

Make sure to check all your writings before you print the report. Because once you hand it in, there is no way back! You should print it at least three copies. One for you, one for your first supervisor, and one for your second supervisor. Do not forget to keep the soft-file version with you for further usage (or just to remind you of your hard work). You also have to send the soft-file to your department for their archive.

4. Prepare for your colloquium and oral examination

Colloquium! It is one of the most haunting words in the thesis period. but don’t worry to much, colloquium only takes 5% of your overall final grade. however, it is still very important to ace it. Students have to prepare a good and eye-catching PowerPoint presentation, in addition to a fruitful discussion. When choosing the words you’ll use for discussion, do not put too many words yet not too little that it’s not informative. You will do your colloquium in front of all staff and students of your department. If you’re lucky, the Professor / Chair of the department will come as well. Preparing for possible questions is always needed. Besides, it will also be useful for oral examination.

For me, the real challenge is an oral examination. There will be three people grading your oral exam, first supervisor, second supervisor, and the examiner. It is important to have an in-depth knowledge of the whole research because they will ask you fundamental questions about your thesis. If you are not a native English speaker, you don’t need to worry. They are very understanding and will help you to get your points across. Be confident, prepared, and focused on this examination and you will make it.

I hope my tips are insightful for you and I wish you the best for your thesis. Let me know how it goes in the comments so that we can share our once-in-a-lifetime experience to WUR students! 🙂

wur thesis report

Towards a future-proof urban water cycle

wur thesis report

Cities all over the world face enormous challenges due to climate change impacts. More frequent and intense periods of drought or heavy rainfall directly affect urban water use (e.g., peak consumption during heat waves), water availability (shortages or floods), and water quality (e.g., salinization of freshwater bodies in coastal areas). To accommodate for these increasingly pressing challenges, urban water systems need to become climate-resilient by embracing more circular and sustainable approaches. To this end, the EU-financed Interreg North Sea ‘Anthropocene Nutrient and water Control for Holistic resilience and Recovery’ (ANCHOR) project aims to gather normative and system knowledge to further upscale and fuel the transition to water-wise cities. To this end, project partners from research institutes and local government agencies teamed up to explore pilot projects on the neighborhood scale in Flanders, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.

Within this project, we are looking for a MSc student who would like to write a thesis that contributes to Work Package 3: Governance. Within this work package, we aim to explore mechanisms of how the identified pilots remain transformative or become even more ambitious as well as how involved actors contribute to broadening the projects’ innovative approaches and to spreading their experiences to other contexts. These analyses are conceptually based on recent extensions of the ‘small wins’ governance framework ( Schagen et al., 2023 ; Termeer & Metze, 2019 ) and will be integrated with an ‘agents of change’ framework developed at KWR. As an MSc student, you can position your thesis in this context by coming up with a relevant and original research question, developing a feasible research approach, conducting your set out analysis, and synthesizing your findings in form of a thesis. Upon completion, we invite you to contribute to the project report with a summary of your thesis.

You will be supervised by Jan Starke ( KWR Water Research Institute ) and Dr. Wieke Pot (PAP). If needed, you can use the institute’s facilities in Nieuwegein to write your thesis. This provides you the opportunity to get to know an applied research institute and to make a direct impact in the transition towards future-proof urban water cycles with your thesis research.

Do you have a background in social sciences, economics, or law? Have you worked with qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis methods before? Do you have previous experience in gathering empirical data by means of interviews, focus groups, surveys, or (social) media analysis? Are you confident that you can work in a project with a fixed time schedule? And are you fluent (minimum C1) in either Dutch, German, or Swedish in addition to excellent English language communication skills (verbally and written)? Then you are the candidate we are looking for!

If you are interested, please send a short motivation letter, also entailing your envisioned start and end date as well as initial ideas on the research design (max. 500 words) to [email protected] and [email protected] . We aim to start the thesis trajectory in September 2024.

ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR PRELIMINARY DESIGN (PERFORMANCE ENVELOPE)

Car design is a complex task because of how highly integrated system of systems it is. Fine?designed car models take years of design and optimization and are usually done by specialty teams who are dedicated to each sub-system. This thesis delves into designing a simplified electric race car from scratch with focus on the performance envelope of it. First, a 3D CAD model was done using SolidWorks. That section deals with spatial engineering and strategic placement of major car components for best performance. Having most of the parts in place gives a rough estimate of CoG (Center of Gravity) location, which is needed for vehicle dynamics analysis, which are discussed later in the report. The target for this project car is to have innovative aerodynamics features which might not have been used before because of bulky internal combustion engines restricting available space. One of them is an airfoil-like fascia which makes the center part of the car act as a one big wing. That is believed to give a significant reduction in drag loads on the car. The approach for aerodynamics design and analysis started with a model representing the car’s OML (Outer Mold line) which was simulated separately using Siemens StarCCM+. After understanding the car’s body aero behavior, a rear wing was added to provide extra rear downforce for better handling and stability. The rear wing design was explained in detail. Unfortunately, due to time restrictions as well as software access issues, the aerodynamic analysis of the full car with rear wing is left for future work. After having an estimate about aero loads acting on the car, vehicle dynamics analysis could start. The first subject studied in vehicle dynamics was front-view suspension geometry analysis. Taking the available packaging and geometry into consideration, a 2D model was done in SolidWorks to optimize camber gain. This analysis gave the motion ratio of the front and rear pushrod suspension system which was needed to analyze the performance of the one-eighth car model, ½ car pitch model, and ½ car roll model. These models gave insights into the decision-making process for spring and damping rates to reach a good balance between performance and comfort. This project acts as a hub for further development and studies related to car design.
