Step 5 -Empower other to act on the vision

Secondly it shouldn’t be too loosely defined that people at the execution level can take it away from the desired vision and objectives.

Finally organization management needs to create organizational structure, leadership, and performance plans consistent with the new approach.

IronPort-Cisco: A tech industry merger that makes sense?

When a company acquires another company or merges with one, managers, board members, stockholders and customers are all betting that synergies between the two companies’ products will make for a better, more profitable offering. Too often, that’s not what happens — remember the AOL-Time Warner or Mercedes-Chrysler mergers? — but sometimes the potential partners just fit.

An aura of that sort of happy couple characterized the acquisition of San Bruno, Calif.-based e-mail and Web security firm IronPort Systems Inc. by networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. when it was announced in January.

At that time, Richard Palmer, Cisco’s senior vice president of security technology, said, “We feel there is enormous potential for enhanced e-mail and message protection solutions to be integrated into the existing Cisco Self-Defending Network Framework.” As the acquisition closed last week, Scott Weiss, formerly the CEO of IronPort and now the general manager of Cisco’s IronPort business unit, spelled out more about how that potential for synergy will be fulfilled by the conjoined company.

“This deal is really a harbinger of true consolidation in the security space,” he said, explaining that while IronPort’s enterprise customers have been able to buy the company’s e-mail security appliances and Web security appliances, different security groups traditionally bought and managed them — often at different times. That lack of coordination may have made customers miss some important security threats, said Weiss. “Today we’re seeing blended threats where someone clicks on a URL in an e-mail message, and then here comes the malware, undetected as it is transported through the unprotected Web on Port 80,” he said.

Weiss said that the Cisco-IronPort answer to those complex blended threats, as well as the answer to future threats that will inevitably be even more sophisticated, is called Wide Traffic Inspection.

“This isn’t the same as deep packet inspection, because what this wide approach does is coordinate a blended defense across the entire enterprise network,” he said. “Just as the Web and e-mail gateways are more effective when they work together, this new approach can be even more effective because it will cover the entire network.”

According to Weiss, there are two major factors driving the potential for success of Wide Traffic Inspection, which will become an integral part of Cisco’s existing Self-Defending Network. One is that the IronPort SenderBase reputation database will be propagated to all devices in Cisco-equipped and -secured enterprise networks. SenderBase is a database that collects traffic information from more than 100,000 Internet service providers, universities and corporations around the world and uses it to determine the trustworthiness of the source of any e-mail or Web traffic.

The other key factor is the added penetration of IronPort security products that Cisco’s larger customer base will provide. “Cisco currently has about 40% of the enterprise firewall market, which roughly quadruples the IronPort data-acquisition opportunity,” said Weiss.

He explained that altogether this means that better instrumentation of all threats will be pushed out to every piece of the enterprise firewall. “For example, in the IronPort Web gateway, we track malware and spyware working through either Port 80 or 25,” Weiss said. “and now that data will be made into a software addition to Cisco ASA firewalls, and everyone that has a Cisco firewall will be able to see more and better instrumented threat data.”

Weiss noted that the IronPort technology will also pay off for Cisco customers trying to stop data leakage. “We’ll be able to block, notify or otherwise manage the leaks, to achieve whatever objective customers need,” he said.

The larger customer base will enhance the IronPort SenderBase data-acquisition opportunities, and Weiss said the IronPort technology will not have trouble processing the additional load. “We have been honed our ability to parse the data and become measurably more effective in identifying spam and other malware,” he said.

When asked if the additional customer volume will help IronPort’s virus-outbreak filters, Weiss said that the IronPort outbreak detectors currently identify almost all virus outbreaks now and that the improved performance would be marginal.

The focus of the combined company’s security efforts will continue to be those carried by the Web and through e-mail. Other threats will be addressed as they emerge. “Threats carried by VoIP, instant messaging and other technologies are not big enough just yet because they’re infants relative to the threat levels on the Web and in e-mail,” said Weiss, “but we’re definitely keeping an eye out on them, and especially on mobile phones.” He indicated that customers will put the pressure on the company where and when security systems are needed. “We’ll continue to buy and build better components in the security environment as we need to,” he said.

Cisco has finalized the acquisition of Web security firm IronPort Systems, which it originally said it would acquire in January.

The US$830 million deal , which was completed on Monday, will "add to Cisco's armory", according to Andy Buss, a senior analyst at Canalys. "This is Cisco's first real foray into content defense, acquiring a company that protects against Web threats by looking at content and sender," said Buss. "This will enhance its product offerings, but bring Cisco into conflict with its partner Trend Micro."

As Trend Micro has gateway antispam products, and is also launching products based on Web reputation, which assesses the trustworthiness of URLs, Cisco's acquisition could lead to friction between the partners, Buss said.

Trend Micro's software runs on Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA), while the company's antivirus uses Cisco's trust agent. Trend Micro aims its Web security products at small and midsize businesses and IronPort targets larger enterprises but, as Cisco adapts IronPort's technologies, it will bring it into conflict with Trend Micro. "In the future there will be a level of tension between the two," Buss said.

Nigel Seddon, Trend Micro's European business development director, said that Trend Micro would continue to be the sole software provider for Cisco ASA devices. "We are not aware of [Cisco] plans to use IronPort technologies [to the exclusion of Trend Micro]," Seddon told ZDNet UK.

Seddon added that Trend Micro would shortly be announcing more partnerships "utilizing non-antivirus threat content software bundled with Cisco products. On the ASA 500 we're broadening content," he said. "This acquisition will not affect our relationship [with Cisco] at all."
