Globalization and growing supply chain interconnectivity have led to greater complexity, uncertainty, and vulnerability in supply chains. Concequently, supply chains must become smarter to confront these challenges. The smarter supply chain has shown great promise; however, the business, policy, and technical challenges must be addressed before changes can be made. A literature review was performed to synthesize the studies on smarter supply chain management. The proior literature has been categoried into four aspect, including information sharing and supply–demand forecasting, smarter supply chain process integration and smarter decision-making, smarter supply chain risk management, and smarter supply chain collaboration. The successful practices and existing solutions for smarter supply chain management are also presented, which could serve as references for enterprises. The review concludes with a discussion of several research topics for futher work on smarter supply chain management.

This paper aims to review logistics and supply chain management topics where theories have been applied to better understand the supply chain management (SCM) discipline identity. The purpose is threefold: to identify research topics in logistics and supply chain management where one or more theories have been examined; provide commentary on the theories that have been applied to the various logistics and SCM research topics; and to provide reference material and direction for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This structured literature review (SLR) examines research papers in logistics and SCM from 1991 to 2015 published in eight leading academic journals. Papers in the data set are grouped by topic and further analyzed in terms of research method, purpose, year and journal.

This research categorizes papers by the topics that were studied to understand important insights about how these topics have been examined by researchers. Within each topic area, theories that researchers have used to investigate the topics are identified. This method exposes insights such as: how topics have evolved over time, which topics have lost prominence, which topics may be particularly promising for future research and how topics are treated in the literature.

Originality/value

Despite multiple calls for clarification regarding how theory has been used in logistics and SCM, the logistics and SCM disciplines continue to grow without adequate research on how theory has been used to examine SCM topics. This SLR therefore provides a broad compilation of logistics and SCM research that uses named theories and that is organized by SCM topic to better understand the SCM discipline.

Can New Research Help Predict Supply Chain Disruptions?

At a conference at the Tobin Center for Economic Policy at Yale, academia and business experts gathered to discuss new ways in which research could help predict, avoid and manage supply chain disruptions. 

Yale economist Aleh Tsyvinski and Princeton economist Ernest Liu are developing a new platform that “offers highly detailed information on supply chain disruptions on in near-real-time across a range of product, industries, and localities, “according to an article in the Yale News.  

Part of their goal is to move economic theory closer to policies. “Typically, in economics, theory takes years, even decades to trickle down to policy,” explains Tsyvinski. “This is one of the very few examples where the distance between cutting-edge-theory, cutting-edge data analysis, and practical applications are very short."

In describing the platform, Tsyvinki said gave an example of how they analyzed 200 million datapoints of containers coming into the US. In an excerpt from the article, he explained how the data can be used.

  Analyzing this super-detailed data with state-of-the-art computer modeling allowed us to create a sweeping monthly index of supply-chain disruption — interruptions in the production, sale, or distribution of products. In close to real time and with an unprecedented level of granularity, we can measure disruptions across industries, products, and localities. We can identify whether magnets are more disrupted than toys. We can provide details on which kinds of toys are being disrupted. At the firm level, we can show whether an individual company, say American Airlines, faces more disruptions than another firm. We can also show whether it is American Airlines being disrupted or one of its subsidiaries. We can do this for every major company in the United States. We can also track the temporary breakdowns in the long-term supplier, manufacturer, and customer relationships. And, crucially, we can identify and measure disruptions to critical supplies .

Moving beyond the “one-size-fits-all” supply chain model

Constantly evaluating supply chain strategies and capabilities is imperative for any retailer. Keeping up with evolving dynamics in customer expectations, product characteristics, and the competitive landscape requires investment in analytics and infrastructure, as well as an openness to change.
